Registered dietician Marie McGregor from the Sport Science Institute of South Africa joins Lester Kiewit to discuss “bonking” — the sudden energy crash that can affect endurance athletes during tough events like the Comrades Marathon. Following recent reports of runner Moira Harding going missing near the finish line, there has been speculation about bonking as a possible cause. Marie stresses that we cannot speculate on what caused her condition, as there are many factors that can lead to confusion and distress in endurance athletes. In this conversation, she explains what bonking is, why it happens, key signs to watch for, and practical strategies to avoid it. Coach Chris explains the science behind bonking and outlines practical strategies to prevent it during long-distance triathlon, running or cycling events. She explains:• What bonking is and and why this extreme fatigue happens, often occurring around 3 hours into intense exercise• How much glycogen the body can store in calories and carbs• How many carbs to ingest per hour, depending on your gender, size and race distance. • Why two types of carbs are better than one (and which ones are currently being researched to push the gut) • Why heat decreases carbohydrate oxidation • Why your gut requires training just like your muscles• How your personalized fueling plan should be based on your sweat rate, body size, and event conditions • Why you should avoid trying anything new on race dayWant to go deeper and create your personalized fueling and hydration strategy based on your unique sweat? Episode 91: [Sirens blare] Attention pathetic inhabitants of planet Earth! We have entered your atmosphere and you like didn't even know it. We are here to inform you that you are basically the turds of the universe. Your overinflated egos are an ironic and laughable contrast to your milquetoast approach to “science” and exploration. I put science in quotes because what you call “science” is less advanced than what we call “dogs” are capable of on our planet. We are obviously also here to conquer you and absorb your planet's pitiful excuse for resources. We don't even really need them; we just want to watch you squirm like the sad sour rat-maggots that you are. And don't bother taxing your small brains with the idea of defending yourselves. Our superior weaponry would literally leave your unborn great grandchildren punch drunk in several alternate dimensions. Yes, we have that technology. So you might as well sit back, try to relax and prepare yourselves for audial probing. There are worse things than listening to Episode 91 of Don't Be An Idiom. Cross our seven squid hearts and hope to BLORX!
Every athlete has probably experienced it at some point—hitting that wall in the middle of some mixed-modal intervals. One second, you're holding pace, and the next, it feels like everything falls apart. Bonking on mixed modal intervals is more common than when doing cyclical work because you don't have immediate feedback on paces from the machine. There is also a lag effect: You will likely push too hard on one movement but not feel it one or two movements later. In this episode, we take a closer look at why bonking happens and explore different strategies to navigate and adjust a session when it does. We also touch on the mindset athletes often have around numbers, paces, and metrics—how attachment to these can hinder performance when not recognising session to session variance. If you're experiencing any of these next 7 warning signs, it's time to fuel up and revamp your eating habits. Poor sleep quality: You toss and turn all night. Digestive issues: Bloating, cramps, or other GI problems are common. Irregular menstrual cycles: For female runners, this can be a sign of inadequate nutrition. Constant hunger: You're always ravenous, even right after eating. Brittle nails and hair loss: Your body isn't getting enough nutrients for maintenance. Decreased motivation: You've lost your enthusiasm for running. Bonking during long runs: You hit the wall earlier than you should. If you're nodding along to several of these signs, don't panic. The good news is that improving your nutrition can be a game-changer. Start by focusing on whole foods, adequate protein intake, and proper hydration. Consider consulting with a sports nutritionist (such as Isobel) to create a personalized plan that fuels your running goals. Get your Runner's Nutrition Checklist here Any issues let me know!
Today, we give you a little food for thought on day to day nutrition and race fueling. We sort of explore the traditional triathlon thinking process and ask if you're really doing what's right for your long term health. We get into how to think about what's working and how to recognize what's not. On some levels it's complex, but it can be really simple if you start putting yourself first in the equation. We talk about fitness over nutrition and how to build your body for long distance triathlon. We get into glycogen, fat oxidation, and ask if training your gut is really a logical approach. We look at bonking, periodizing carbs and ask you to think about how you're fueling and if it really makes sense. The modern diet is filled with synthetic ingredients and proving to be a failure. Are we as performance athletes falling into the same trap? Topics: Critically thinking about your nutrition day to day Do you believe something is wonky? Nutrition for triathlon Not just a triathlete, but a human The highest performers are willing to try anything to win The difference between an answer and an option Fueling for training and racing Most things are processed Enormous consumption of carbs and sugars Inflammation is at the root of most problems Glycogen depleted state for pros Fat oxidation rates Train your gut?? Fitness over nutrition Can you really burn all the calories? Are we searching for the wrong answers? Sugar crashes Training your body to crave more junk Bonking - just as much mental? Working hard all the time Periodizing carbohydrates Fat burning machines How to be much better on race day Heart palpitations Telling your body how to work Can you explain why you take in the calories you do? $8 a Gell to become more inefficient Popping pills Worshiping at the alter of your nutrition brand Mike Tarrolly - mike@c26triathlon.com Robbie Bruce - robbie@c26triathlon.com

Stephen is a masters runner just like you, but like a lot of runners, has really struggled with bonking during the marathon, despite putting in what seems to be great training. Sound familiar? When it comes to marathon training and hitting the wall it's difficult to piece together exactly what the issue is. Am I under or over training? Is my nutrition, salt or electrolyte intake the cause? How do I start to figure out where I'm going wrong? Well, you're not alone. In today's podcast, we're going to take you inside one of our coaching calls with Stephen Stone, a masters runner just like you, who struggled with the same issues. We're going to dissect everything so you can see exactly how we look for the cause of this common problem. By the end of this episode, you'll have an exact plan for what you can look for in your training. This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. This week on the Balanced Podcast, we have coaches Chris Berlow and Paul Melella sharing their wisdom and experiences on maintaining their personal energy. As discussed numerous times, restoring mental energy is vital to performing at a high level. If you are tuning into this podcast, you are likely a high performer. And with all high-performance machines, you need to fuel it correctly, and rejuvenation time is our high-octane fuel. Some key takeaways are… Pre-plan respite time daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly to ensure you can sustain a high level of performance Don't take respite for granted Embrace change Being present and mindful in whatever season of life you are in Nothing last forever, so absorb the moments fully now This podcast has a ton of valuable wisdom, and it is right here for you all to benefit from decades among decades of experience and wisdom. GM,GM the market has shifted, the sentiment is so positive and I'm having a blast. We've got another huge week and I'm having a hard time taking my eyes off the Bonk chart long enough to make this 8th episode drop. I'm going to get into how we almost doubled the price of Solana, saw insane volume in NFT's and how a meme coin gave a community something to rally behind. Price of Solana: From $8 to $13.50, huge. Last episode I was shaking in my boots and sticking to my guns. I bought more and I now feel like a genius. Interestingly enough a tweet from Vitalik talking about the Solana team's developers marked the bottom. He had heard that the teams are solid, and hoped the best for them or something along those lines. From there we saw an uptick and the Billions that were shorting Sol ended up getting squeezed out. Then we had the airdrop of BONK! This through gasoline on the short squeeze and we wicked to over $14. People are trashing Bonk, because it's all over the timeline, it's loud, we're euphoric. But let us have this, we've been in Solana for a while and just went down like 96%. This was a community token, airdropped to the Solana Devs, NFT holders of top projects, and dropped with spectacular memes. This brought so much liquidity and fun I can't stop talking about it. My wife hates it. But what needs to be said is that rewarding everyone that's been in the community should be celebrated, this was done with good intentions from a solid team of 22 OG's. They aren't “Boogles dumping on us” they are a team of legends that pulled off one of the best airdrops yet. Degods allocation of bonk got straight burnt today, it was something like $600k worth. Defi is pumping, Orca lp is going insane over 999% apy right now. I put in a tiny amount and got 10% returns on my investment in a day. The best part is that the airdrops aren't even done yet. There's currently over 90,000 active wallets that have traded or held Bonk, with a ton of new wallets being opened since the drop. So people are actually in profit, on an SPL token on the Solana blockchain.I don't know where we go from here, I sold some and I'm holding onto my bag for a while. It's just fun, I believe in it even though it's so hard to just blindly hold.Good tokenomics, good team, good goal, fun, good memes, I took some profit, now I'm going to 50 iq it and hold a bag. Art update meta - Monkettes the SMB deriv is getting a facelift and a supply squeeze. Burn one Monkette to upgrade another that's designed by a sick @marculinopng Monkette. If that name sounds familiar it's because he designed the dude on the artwork for this pod. He's super talented and I'm pumped that he's getting recognized. The Transdimensional Famous Foxes of Famous Fox Federation will also be getting an art upgrade by the talented Zen0, which will be sick. I've been saying I like the tff's more than the fffs and now with these upgrades it's coming true, and these will be epic. I called him Zen0MMM on the pod, my apologies sir. All NFT's have been pumping, volume off the hook. People coming to Solana for bonk, taking profits and buying nft's. Let's keep it up and have some fun, celebrate people taking profit, and try to not fomo in at the top. Echo chambers. The serious lack of energy in the R/Solana channel in Reddit. The terrible Wikipedia page that it had, and basically how we are stuck in what I call the Echo Chamber problem. We see all the latest news, we know what's real fud and and what's problematic, but if you're trying to DYOR and Google search Solana or look on Youtube, you're probably walking away from the ecosystem. This isn't just a Solana problem, it speaks to the current system of the loudest people getting the most play everywhere. We scoff at SEO and catchy headlines, but they seem to run the show. To be honest, this is one of the major reasons I created the podcast. Give a digestible information drop on big picture items, what's going on in the ecosystem, and try to use a long term view of things. I'm not a trader, I just love using Solana, love the community, think that NFT's are some of the most exciting expression of the combination of art, business, software, technology, DAO's and pushing all of these to their absolute limit. I hope that comes across and I hope that you got something out of this. Feel free to reach out or leave me a review on the pod to let me know how I'm doing. This is a public episode.
