POPULARITY
The popular TV western series starred Nick Adams as an ex-Confederate and aspiring writer who travels the West, and was one of the few non-game shows produced by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman.
In Part 2 of Dennis's interview with Dick DeBartolo, the writer talks about what it was like to juggle two dream jobs; writing for Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! He also shares story after story of the good will he receives when a stranger finds out he's "Mad's maddest writer." He's gotten everything from airplane upgrades to house seats at a sold-out show. Dick also talks about his current work as a gadget expert on various TV shows as well as his own podcast The Giz Wiz. And on the subject of The Match Game, Dick shares stories about all the regulars; Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, Gene Reyburn and Richard Dawson. Other topics include: his secret to staying productive and creative, producer Mark Goodson's jaw-dropping art collection, Alfred E. Neuman's origin story, that really nice thing Betty White did for him, that time a Match Game producer informed him, "Standards and Practices are very unhappy" and why he thinks the fans who talk to him about Mad love it so so much. www.gizwiz.biz
Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his heroes, comedy writer Dick DeBartolo who worked for both Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! Dick talks about how he landed both jobs, how they actually complimented each other and what it was like to go back and forth between the two offices in Manhattan. Recalling Match Game, Dick describes how dry the questions were when he started and how it was his idea to make the questions silly, which basically saved the show. Dennis also has lots of questions for Dick about his beloved Mad magazine, like who exactly was it for? And how did they create parodies of movies that were still in theaters without VHS tapes to refer to? And what does one of Dick's Mad magazine features look like typed on a page? Dick also talks about his personal life and recalls how he met his now-husband Dennis at the gym back in 1980...because of Mad. Other topics include: Dick's hilariously tender relationship with Mad founder Bill Gaines, Dick and Bill's secret Statue of Liberty spy adventure, Gay Sundays at Studio 54, what game show producing legends Mark Goodson and Bill Todman were like behind the scenes, why celebrities like Michael J. Fox, June Lockhart and Viggo Mortenson loved being parodied in Mad and that time Dick pretended to be Alfred E. Neuman's campaign manager when Alfred was running for president. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we celebrate Halloween like only we can. First, while not spooky in any way, Child's Play shares its name with a well-known horror movie franchise from later in the 80s. Besides being Bill Cullen's last show with Mark Goodson, it may be better known for being replaced by the game which typified the 80s, Press Your Luck. Then, in 1984, the same year horror master Wes Craven gave us "A Nightmare on Elm Street" he directed this ABC TV Movie starring Robert Urich, Joanna Cassidy, and Erica Kane herself Susan Lucci. In this made-for, Susan plays a devilish dame who tries to tempt ol' Spenser for Hire with power if he can just join this hot country club that just about everyone at his company works for. We're two short weeks from the pinnacle of the spooky season, so we're pulling out Halloween-themed shows. First, while not spooky in any way, Child's Play shares its name with a well-known horror movie franchise from later in the 80s. Besides being Bill Cullen's last show with Mark Goodson, it may be better known for being replaced by the game which typified the 80s, Press Your Luck.
Bob Barker, Famed Game Show Host, Dies at 99. When he wasn't beating up Adam Sandler on a golf course, he was spending more than a half-century presiding over 'Truth or Consequences' and 'The Price Is Right.' Bob Barker, the energetic game show legend who for more than 50 years made every day entertaining as host of Truth or Consequences and The Price Is Right, has died. He was 99. Barker, who also was celebrated for his animal-rights activism and for one hilarious brawl with Adam Sandler in the 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore, died Saturday morning of natural causes in his longtime Hollywood Hills home, his representative, Roger Neal, told The Hollywood Reporter. Barker collected 15 Emmy Awards, including 12 for hosting. He was presented a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 and was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame five years later. The Guinness World Records named him TV's Most Durable Performer as well as the Most Generous Host in Television History, having doled out, by its estimation, more than $200 million worth of prizes. In 1987, Barker stopped coloring his gray hair because of the animal products used in dyes and chastised the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which he hosted, for their use of furs. While he was doing Truth for nighttime viewing, Barker accepted producer Mark Goodson's offer to host a daytime show, a new version of The Price Is Right. He said he would have asked for more money had he known that CBS daytime head Bud Grant would not have bought the show unless Barker was on board. Survivors include his half-brother, Kent; half-nephews Robert and Chip; and half-niece Vickie. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/van-silk/support

As children of the 80s and 90's, the TSHE hosts have all spent our fair share of time in front of the television (even those of us whose parents were determined to limit our screen time). To celebrate all those useless tv hours, Hillary, Meredith, and Ann have gathered to unearth our inner Vannas and discuss game shows – those we loved as children, watched as adults, or want to check out in the future. Which thinly veiled advertising bonanza fascinated us most? Are we best suited for physical or mental challenges (as if you couldn't tell)? Who would be on our Family Feud team? Is there a current primetime viewing event to rival Regis and his monochromatic wardrobe? Plus, Hillary has experienced podcast nirvana, Ann is a woman of substance, and Meredith just wants to watch people fall down.TSHE Recommends: Somebody Feed PhilQuiz ShowConnect with the show! This is your show, too. During her tenure there (as well as independently) she handled a variety of accounts for many major recording labels including projects for Concord Records, Atlantic, Sharp-Nine, GRP, Koch, Brownstone, DRG, RCA Victor/BMG, Nonesuch Records, Telarc, Columbia, and most of Warner Bros. jazz, covering both international CD promotions, tours and “live” performances. Marjorie Goodson is breaking physical and creative boundaries with her luxurious, avant-garde coffee table book simply titled, MG. She is the daughter of Mark Goodson, the most popular game show creator and producer in the history of TV (Family Feud, The Price is Right, Match Game, To Tell The Truth, Beat the Clock) Marjorie is a proud and active supporter of The Actors Fund's Career Transition for Dancers, and has been an avid dancer since childhood. For Marjorie, dancing is her need, her want, her strength, her desire, her pleasure, her energy and sometimes her pain. “It’s my purpose and my passion, and it feeds my soul,” said Marjorie. With the release of MG, her book of photographic essays three years in the making, Marjorie most definitely pushes the artistic envelope to the pinnacle of creative performance. The book includes 153 commanding and empowering images by noted Romanian born art and fashion photographer, Andreea Radutoiu. The life-long dancer is captured – in glorious color, dramatic black and white and stimulating sepia tones – the magnificent and glorious 55-year-old Goodson in multiple dance postures in her passionate pursuit of life that goes beyond age and into the stratosphere of the emotional and physical connection to one’s inner self. “I feel my time is now,” says Goodson. There’s always tomorrow – there’s always an opportunity,” she says. “It’s tapping into your youth and having the courage to be creative and to live in the body physical.” MG is an artistic and visual collaboration between Goodson (concept and creative content), Radutoiu, and hair and makeup stylist, Torsten Witte (LaLa Land, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), set against some of Southern California’s most dramatic and historic locations including, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Milk Studios, the Dunes at Pismo and Zuma Beach. Goodson has always loved using her body to express art and with this exquisite tome, she hopes to inspire other women by letting them know they, too, can find their passion and confidence at any age.
Mark Goodson is a very active member of our SHAIR Recovery group, and it's about time we had him on to tell us his wild story. His life of addiction started before he ever took his first drink and eventually triggered an episode of drug induced psychosis that led him to bizarre behavior, like stripping down naked in a Mexican church. Now Mark Goodson's a sober husband, dad, and writer at his website called The Miracle of the Mundane. Merriam-Webster defines the word ‘mundane' as dull, but Mark finds ordinary life to be a miracle, and his sobriety has unleashed creativity he never knew he had before. MG ~ Fabulous, Fit & Festive with Marjorie Goodson Marjorie Goodson, a classically trained ballet dancer, and the daughter of the late Mark Goodson, brings us a collection of dramatic and dynamic dance images in her book titled MG. Her use of gritty, raw, and often nude imagery reveals the dancer's sensual, provocative nature and her love of the "contemporary" through the architectural shapes she creates and molds with her sculpted body. With stunning textures, lighting, and composition (and a wild imagination), MG highlights the sheer physicality and drama of contemporary dance. Alternating between flamboyant and vulnerable, Goodson celebrates the body "physical" and the body "emotional”. At 54, Goodson proves that you can be beautiful and passionate at any age.
