In this raw and energising conversation, Katy Cowan is joined by Emma Barratt, global executive creative director at Wolff Olins, to talk about class in the creative industry, imposter syndrome, and the kind of diversity we don't discuss enough. With honesty, grit, and a huge amount of heart, Emma opens up about her working-class roots in Salford, the long road into the design world, and the resilience it took to get to the top. They explore why the industry still has a long way to go when it comes to genuine inclusivity—especially in terms of class and social mobility. Emma talks about how expensive cities like London continue to block access for many talented creatives and how the legacy of connections and privilege often dictates who gets a foot in the door. It's not just about ticking boxes on a diversity form—it's about meaningful, systemic change, and it needs to start at the top. Emma also shares her experience of imposter syndrome and learning to embrace her own voice, even when it didn't fit the mould. From overcoming dyslexia to navigating a male-dominated creative scene, she reflects on what it took to unlearn shame and reclaim pride in her background. We hear how she's now determined to be the mentor she never had—helping others who feel like outsiders realise their worth, whether they're neurodiverse, working class, or just don't see themselves represented. This episode touches on everything from unpaid internships and university barriers to the superpower of growing up without a safety net. Emma doesn't shy away from the difficult truths—but there's also humour, hope, and a rallying cry for change. If you've ever felt like you don't belong, this one's for you. This week on Let's Try This Again, I'm your host B Simone, and I'm sitting down with the hilarious and inspiring Zainab Johnson. From the moment I discovered Zainab on social media—rocking her Bantu knots and dropping truth with every punchline—I knew I had to have her on the show. In this episode, we get real about what it's like to break into stand-up comedy as a Black Muslim woman, and how sometimes the things that make us different become our superpowers.Zainab shares how she never saw women like herself represented in comedy or on TV growing up, and how that inspired her to become the role model she wished she'd had. She opens up about her first time on stage, admitting she thought she'd fail but wanted a good story to tell—only to discover she was actually good at it and wanted to try again the very next day. We laugh about the wild journey from open mics at hookah lounges to touring internationally, and how being brutally honest about her life—like growing up with 13 siblings, wearing a hijab as a kid, or experimenting with hair—became the heart of her comedy. We also dive into real talk about identity, faith, and self-acceptance. Zainab breaks down why she chose to stop wearing her hijab as a teen and how, as an entertainer, she's on a mission to affirm the existence of young girls who don't see themselves reflected in the media. We even get into the stigma around Black women and hair, and how owning your truth—whether it's a flip-over weave or a shaved head—can be freeing and funny. If you've ever felt like the odd one out, doubted your path, or needed a reminder that your story matters, this episode is for you. Tune in for laughter, wisdom, and a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep showing up and trying again, no matter what the world expects. What up, Beasts. This conversation with Shaté lit my soul on fire. From the moment we met, it felt like two introverted empaths met at a crossroads of “I love people” and “Please don't talk to me.” Shaté is this wildly wise, soft-spoken powerhouse who helps people build careers from the inside out. She shared how her own health, and we're talking mental, emotional, and spiritual here, was deeply impacted by learning to accept herself, own her nonlinear story, and stop people-pleasing her way through life. We unpacked the kind of self-awareness that only therapy, boundaries, and aging into your full damn self can teach you. She reminded me (and maybe you too?) that being “too sensitive” isn't a flaw. It's a freakin' superpower. We also dove deep into the wild idea that maybe becoming isn't about adding more; maybe it's about unbecoming all the noise we picked up along the way. The boxes. The masks. The “who do you want me to be” energy. Shaté dropped some truth bombs about how your career is part of your health, how loving your work actually improves your physical and financial well-being, and how self-expression might just be the path to everything you've ever wanted. This episode isn't just a pep talk. It's a permission slip to build a life that feels like home to you. Be your favorite person now. Don't wait.As always, I hope something lands with you today. Amy Liu's journey to redefining clean beauty started in her own skin. As someone with eczema, she knew firsthand the struggle of finding beauty products that were both safe and effective. The industry was full of promises, but few products delivered results without irritation. After years of working behind the scenes at Smashbox, Kate Somerville, and Josie Maran Cosmetics, Amy found herself at a crossroads. She had built brands for others, but what about a brand built for people like her? People who wanted beauty without compromise? At 40, she took the leap and launched Tower 28, the first and only beauty brand 100% compliant with the National Eczema Association's ingredient guidelines. In this episode, Nancy and Amy unpack the highs and lows of entrepreneurship—overcoming the fear of failure, scaling a business while staying true to her mission, and bringing her husband on board as CFO. Jean Ibañez Payne's journey is one of resilience, transformation, and reclaiming self-worth. From overcoming the trauma of military service to finding strength in vulnerability, she shares how she broke the silence, built a supportive community, and turned her pain into a mission to help others heal. This conversation is a reminder that healing is not a destination but a journey one where every small step forward is a victory. Key Takeaways: Keeping pain bottled up only strengthens it; opening up to the right people can be the first step toward healing. No matter how isolated you feel, there are people ready to support and uplift you—you just have to take the step to connect. Trauma does not define you. Reclaiming your power means owning your story on your own terms. Even the simplest habits, like movement, mindfulness, or self-affirmations, can lead to life-changing transformations. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone and choose to live for yourself, not just for others. About Jean Ibañez Payne: Jean Ibañez Payne is a trailblazer in workforce training, corporate leadership, and diversity, with a career spanning over two decades. Jean's journey has been defined by resilience, breaking barriers in male-dominated industries, and advocating for personal empowerment. As the author of Reclaim Your Worth: A Story of Abuse, Empowerment, and Building a Life on My Terms, Jean shares her deeply personal and courageous story of overcoming adversity. Her memoir details her experiences navigating harassment, discrimination, and personal trauma in both the military and corporate sectors—spaces where she often felt unseen yet refused to be silenced. He's back! Coach, author, podcast host and veteran, George Bryant rejoins on me this incredibly honest and raw episode. We touch on his life story, but also how he has hardened and retooled his mindset to find happiness. We discuss life lessons, being parents, negative self talk and finding gratitude in a life of chaos. George is a super successful and happy entrepreneur, but his life was most certainly not always that way. He was born in an abusive household where his mother was addicted to cocaine. George was also sexually abused and raped by two women as a teenager which led to his struggle with bulimia. George swung the pendulum the opposite way by joining the Marines for 13 years, where he pushed his body to the limits, nearly losing his legs to compartment syndrome. After being told he wouldn't run again, he ran a triathlon and tied the world record for the highest box jump in Afghanistan. After losing numerous friends to suicide and suffering PTSD, George found relief after visiting Costa Rica and trying ayahuasca. After that experience, he started to rebuild his life, writing and photographing for NYT Best Selling cookbook and becoming an entrepreneur. He started to work with some of the brightest minds in the world and has helped coached others tap into their potential, but personally and with their businesses. George is also a loving dad, which he describes as the day that truly changed his life forever, and the first time he's ever felt what love really was. Hey, it’s Tory Archbold, and I’m so excited to be back with you on the Powerful Stories podcast. You’re probably wondering, “Why the silence?” Well, in today’s episode, I’m sharing why I’ve been quiet - and it’s not because I’ve been doing nothing, far from it. I’ve been doing a lot of deep thinking, realigning, and stepping back to focus on what truly matters. And I wanted to share it all with you. I recorded this episode on my morning walk because I promised myself that I’d commit to walking between 10,000 and 20,000 steps a day - and this walk felt like the perfect moment to record and connect with you. I didn’t want to outsource this podcast episode to anyone else. I wanted to upload it myself. I felt that the energy of creating it myself, the rawness of it, was important. It’s a big part of why I stopped outsourcing the production and took control back. In the episode, I dive into why I made that choice and how it’s allowed me to refocus and re-energize. You’ll hear why I paused the podcast and the importance of listening to your intuition when you need to step away from something, even when you’re doing great work. Sometimes, silence is needed to recalibrate—and that’s exactly what I did. And I’ll be honest, there was also a shift in my family dynamics that required my presence and attention. But it wasn’t just about stepping away. It was about getting grounded. Right now, I’m juggling three countries—Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S.—and it’s been a huge learning curve, particularly in balancing it all while staying healthy and focused. I’ve had to be intentional with how I spend my time, and as a result, I’ve had some major breakthroughs that I want to share with you. I also talk about the PowerZone—my incredible community of women who’ve taken my Five-Point Story Framework and completely transformed their businesses and lives. It’s been mind-blowing to watch these women show up, own their stories, and make an impact. I’ll share a little bit about them, what they’ve accomplished, and how they’ve inspired me to keep going, even when it felt hard. And let’s talk about money and value. After spending a significant amount on podcast production, I made the choice to invest that money differently. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m all about aligning with the right people, the right energy, and saying “no” to what’s not working. As I reflect on my own journey, I’ve learned to trust my intuition in a whole new way—and I share how this trust has shaped my decisions in business and in life. I want you to trust your own gut, too, whether it’s in how you run your business or how you engage with your community. This episode is a personal, raw, and real look at where I’ve been and where I’m headed. It’s about aligning with your values, investing in the right people, and never being afraid to hit pause and recalibrate when you need to. So, here it is—no fluff, just me sharing my journey, recorded as I walked through my morning. I’m so glad you’re back here with me. Much love,Tory xoxoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The election clearly did not go the way many of us wanted. I was on the TV news once again on Election Night and the morning after. The outcome wasn't the shock it was in 2016, but it's profoundly disappointing. Join me and Diane Diaz for this conversation on our thoughts and how we're moving forward (recorded on Wednesday, November 6 at 11 am EST). We too are sad and frustrated but we also want to remind you of the power of your voice and your community. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that America won't elect a woman as president or that voters don't care about women's rights. Two things to keep in mind. First, in both Missouri and Arizona (as well as other states - both blue and red - since the Dobbs decision in 2022), amendments passed to counter very restrictive abortion laws. Unfortunately, in Florida where I live, a similar amendment did not pass because Florida requires 60% and the amendment got 57% (a similar percentage as in the other states). A healthy majority of voters, both men and women, agree that women's reproductive rights are essential. Second, it was a *very* close race. Kamala Harris only had 100 days to do what most presidential candidates have 2 years to do: introduce herself to the American people, talk about the issues she would focus on as president, and contrast herself not only with her opponent but also with the incumbent (Biden) in an era of anti-incumbency sentiment. Harris ran a nearly flawless campaign and I believe she simply ran out of time. Hang in there. Your voice matters and the work you do matters. The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago this week and many Americans will be re-introduced to V.P. Kamala Harris when she delivers her speech on Thursday night. I have a background in local Democratic politics and have always been a strong supporter of women running for office. Earlier this summer, we held in-person workshops for women who are running in the Central Florida area where we helped them with their public speaking and storytelling. It was a lot of fun and it showed me once again how powerful someone's personal story is! In this episode, I'm joined by two of those women, Jennifer Adams, who's running for U.S. Congress in Florida's District 7, and Sarah Henry, who's running for Florida State House in District 38. We talk about: Why they decided to run for office and the importance of asking women to run What it's like being a female candidate and having a public voice and presence Their stump speeches and how they tailor them based on the audience The surge of support and enthusiasm for V.P. Kamala Harris's campaign for President and what that tells us about the importance of authenticity The lessons they've learned about being themselves vs. trying to be someone they thought they should be What they learned about storytelling, taking up space, and messaging from the workshops we did with then The importance of donating to women candidates (find local women that you can donate to!)
