I've read every negative publication that is noteworthy, I've listened to people share their exit stories. The only reason that I am here is because it is true, The reason I know it is true is because of the experiences that I have had. I hope if someone is thinking about coming back, just do it. Your life will be better, your posterity will thank you for making it through the hard times. I believe all the Church's truth claims. Matt is on holiday this week, so we're releasing a recent interview he did on “The Greg Bennett Show,” hosted by former Olympian and professional triathlete, Greg Bennett. It was a perfect match as Matt and Greg share many of the same philosophies around high-performance sport and life. In this episode, Matt: Shares his journey from collegiate swimmer to pro triathlete. Discusses the key lessons he learned during that time to become the great coach he is. Describes how he takes a holistic view of an individual when working with them, understanding their work and family life, what stressors do they have, and other non-negotiable obligations. Summarizes the four pillars of performance - Endurance, Functional Strength, Nutrition &Fueling, and Recovery. Dissects how to use data from wearables and why some people will be more comfortable with more data than others. Frames why fueling immediately after working out with protein and carbohydrates is so important. Show Notes from The Greg Bennett Show About Greg Bennett Greg grew up in Sydney, Australia. With two competitive brothers and life spent outdoors, Triathlon was a natural fit for Greg. Although passionate about the sport it took almost a decade to reach the world stage.  By 25 years of age, Greg was winning international titles. By 30, Greg was winning the World series on multiple occasions and competing for Australia at the 2004 Olympics, where like Laura he also placed 4th. Growing up Greg had a strong desire to become better, better than he was yesterday. His family was all driven goal setters who would sit down at the start of each year and write and share their goals. At the time this was a chore for a kid who wanted to be outside, but it was the template for the discipline and dedication to reach the highest level in sport and sustain it for almost three decades.  Greg raced over 500 international races and won over 100. His story of having a winning rate of less than 10% for the first half of his career and converting that rate to over 50% for the second half of his career is entertaining and inspiring and incredibly informative. Greg went on to win multiple World titles, the worlds largest prize purse wins, be awarded the International Triathlon Unions President trophy, be named one of the “Top 15 Triathletes of all time” (Inside Triathlon, 2011), “Top 25 Triathletes of all time” (Triathlete magazine, 2014) and “Triathlete of the year” on multiple occasions (Triathlete magazine). Matt loves his students and recalls different youth and young adults who have influenced his life as a teacher. You don't want to miss this touching podcast interview. "We may not give the fanciest lesson, we may not be just terrifically skillful with audio visual aids…but we can share with every student the fire of our faith, and we can warm our hands by it. I've been painfully disappointed over the years…that wonderful lessons given by loyal gifted teachers who somehow at the end of a class will say, “Well, there's the bell. Brother Jones, will you give the prayer?” And it's over. No closing the books, no looking in the eye for just a minute. No settling down to just say, in effect, where have we been, where are we going, and what is the Lord trying to do?….In some cases not a single reference to what this was supposed to mean to the student or to the teacher that I am left to walk away saying, “I wonder how he felt about that? I wonder how he thought about it? Or what it was supposed to mean to him or to me?” So much effort to get some doctrine, some principle, some map, some video clip across to the students, but not a hint of personal testimony about what that doctrine or that principle meant to the teacher the one who was suppose to lead us and guide us and walk besides us. As President J. Reuben Clark once said, “never let your faith be difficult to detect.” Maybe I'll repeat that. “Never let your faith be difficult to detect.” Never sow seeds of doubt. Avoid self-serving performance and vanity. Don't try to dazzle everyone with how brilliant you are–dazzle them with how brilliant the gospel is. Don't worry about the location of the lost tribes or the three nephites; worry a little more about the location of your student–what's going on in his heart, what's going on in her soul–the hunger. Sometimes the near desperate spiritual needs of our people. Teach them and above all testify to them, love them, bear your witness from the depths of your soul. It will be the most important thing you say to them in the entire hour, and it may save someone's spiritual life. -Elder Jeffrey R. At the young age of 12, Matt Coulam found out he needed a Kidney Transplant. His father, Mike, was a match and gave one of his kidney's to his son. When you get a Kidney transplant you take medication for the rest of your life that tell your body not to attack the foreign Kidney, but those medications also weaken your immune system and a regular cold can cause you to get sick and stay sick for longer periods of time. Although Matt was not able to participate in many of the sports he wanted to participate in Matt had good health for the majority of his childhood. It wasn't until Matt was in his early 20's that he started to feel sick more often, sometimes requiring him to stay in the Hospital, and for longer periods of time. After a few short years of this, the Doctors informed Matt that the Kidney was failing and he would need another transplant. As a husband, and father of young kids Matt shares he and his wife's battle to save his life and the amazing lesson's they learned along the way.    Due to a Melanoma Skin Cancer diagnosis, Matt was unable to get a second Kidney transplant because so many people need Kidneys and a past Cancer "patient" offers no guarantee that the Kidney will be put to good use, even though the Cancer was successfully removed. A diagnosis of Cancer makes you wait 5 years of being Cancer free before you qualify for a transplant. Matt's had to go back on Dialysis and his health became so fragile that he and his wife had no choice other than to fight their health insurance to get around the Cancer "rule" to get approval for coverage. They met with Insurance and Matt's wife Kylee stepped up to the plate and hearing from her motivated the insurance company to help out.   Shortly after getting approval, heartbreakingly, Matt's sister called to let him know that she was not a match. After this devastating news, Matt was desperate to find a match so he could stay on earth to take care of his wife and kids, so he sent a text out to everyone he knew humbly inviting anyone who was willing to get tested and donate their Kidney. Shortly thereafter he received a phone call from a Hospital staff member who said "Matt, you have a lot of people who love you", and to Matt's surprise there were about 20 people who had submitted their information to donate their Kidney to Matt. It was incredible to feel Matt's deep and sincere gratitude and love as he talks about this part of his story. Those people will never be forgotten.    Matt talks about the effect on Self Esteem during such a difficult period, being unable to take care of his wife and kids the way he wanted too. He brings awareness to the difficulties that people on Dialysis go through and how important it is to the health of those people when others see them, recognize them and step up to help them in any way possible.   A young man, Nate Greenway, in Matt's church, whom he taught on Sunday's, stepped up and told his father he wanted to give his Kidney to Matt. Adam, the young man's father, was so touched by his son's desire to give his kidney that he himself decided that he would do it for his son and for Matt. You need to listen to Matt at the end of the podcast, as he shares he feelings about Nate and Adam Greenway who stepped up and saved his life. Incredibly powerful!! Adam Greenway, you are a hero, and so is your son Nate!   In a place of Hopelessness is where Matt found himself, truly wanting to give up... but rather then feel bad for himself and remain in anger... Matt reached out in hope and desperation for help. The answer came because Matt acted. When we act and try, that is all God needs to step in to help. Matt's story and witness of this is powerful. He learned in his moments of hopelessness that there is always positive and amazing things we can find that will lift us up. Focus on the good, focus on the positive, it is a choice and it makes all of the difference.   Matt you are a dear friend and one of my hero's. Thank you for sharing your miraculous and inspiring journey. Because of your experiences and the happiness you live with, you help many, including myself, to strive to recognize all the beauty surrounding us and in this world. Thank you my friend!

In this episode I speak with triathlete Matt Bach on topic of relative energy deficiency. Relative Energy Deficiency is a topic that had not much attention until recently. It goes by shorthand REDs, and it is more discussed in context of female athletes as female athlete triad. Relative energy deficiency is a state when athlete does not fuel their body properly, knowingly or not. It is especially common among endurance and aesthetic athletes, and while research on this topic is pretty scarce, it also affects male athletes! Here are some of the symptoms of REDs. increased fatigue, decreased recovery and performance, muscle loss and resistance to fat loss and even fat gain, loss of periods and libido and possibly infertility, and from the long-term perspective bone density loss. Matt and I discuss the red flags of Relative Energy Deficiency in male athletes as Matt Shares his story from finding out about it to how he overcame it. Matt Bach won Ironman Maryland in 2014 with a time of 8:51, was the top amateur and 6th overall at Eagleman 70.3 in 2015, then 72nd overall in Kona 2015. Matt has been using UCAN since 2014 – he had GI distress and bonking issues prior to that, but UCAN helped him transform his approach to triathlon nutrition. He is such a big believer that he now works for the company as their Director for their Endurance Business. Matt worked on Wall Street for 9 years prior to making this career change. He lives in Summit, NJ with his wife, two kids (2 and 3 years old), and two long-haired miniature dachshunds. He holds an MBA from Temple University and he loves a good cold beer. Each year, Matt and two friends meet-up for Coaster Nerd Con (CNC), their own little convention for nerdy coaster riding. This year, the trio headed west to California.  The parks and attractions they visited were: Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, Knott's Berry Farm, Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, California's Great America, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.   In this episode, Matt reveals which park had the best guest service, as well as his favorite coaster of the trip.  He also shares 5 major lessons that he took away from this experience. They are: It all starts with your attitude and a quote from Henry Ford, "whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." The waiting experience at your attraction could be having a bigger impact in the overall guest experience than you think. It's not enough for us to be employers, we must also be educators. Parks who started off as twins had very different journeys. It's probably time to re-think incentive programs and replace them with "inspiration programs."   Have a question for the mailbag or know of a guest we should feature?  Drop us a line! Josh - josh@amusementadvantage.com Matt - matt@performanceoptimist.com Twitter Facebook LinkedIn This episode is brought to you by FunRating.  If you work in any area of the attractions industry, you’re probably curious how guests at your attraction perceive critical areas of guest experience.  Which facility type provided the best service in 2018?  Who really needs to improve their food service?  And which attraction saw the highest increase in likelihood to return?  These questions, and more, can all be found in the FunRating Report, and this is information that only Amusement Advantage can provide.  The FunRating Report can be found at funrating.com, and we have an exclusive offering for AttractionPros listeners.  To save 10% off of the one-time purchase of $375, tune into the podcast!
