Episode 114 | Scaling Public Electric Vehicle Charging with Ford, A Conversation with Matt Stover

The Road to Autonomy

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2022 39:21

Matt Stover, Director of Charging & Energy Services, North America, Ford Motor Company joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss Ford's strategy for public electric vehicle charging. The conversation begins with Matt discussing the current state of public electric vehicle charging. When we look at public charging right now, the industry is in its infancy. It's been around for about 10 years, but the network growth I should say it's a toddler going to early teen ages. – Matt StoverOn a global basis less then 7% of vehicles on the road are electric vehicles, so we are still very early in the journey to an all-electric future. With the potential for electric vehicle adoption to grow, the charging infrastructure needs to grow to support the demand for EVs. As new charging infrastructure, it's vitally important that the charges are up and operating in a fashion similar to a gas-station, to ensure consumer satisfaction with the EV experience. When you look at charging we're early in the development of the infrastructure, the way that the infrastructure develops is going to be different than what we think about with gas right now. Right now with gas we have a typical venue for filling up your vehicle at a gas station. They all kind of look alike, there in similar types of places. Charging is going to be different from that. You are going to have charging on gasoline forecourts for sure. You are going to have charging in parking lots at your local retailer and you are going to have chargers at work. – Matt StoverWhen the EV charging infrastructure is up, running and reliable, range anxiety will begin to dissipate. Once a customer starts to understand that there is infrastructure out in the market and in their daily life, they can get over the idea of the fear of range anxiety. Because the technology that we are putting into these vehicles is giving them that confidence that the vehicles can go a long distance on a particular charge. – Matt StoverOne of key locations to deploying EV charging infrastructure are retail locations as consumers spend on average 30 to 60 minutes inside of a big-box retailer. During their time shopping, consumers will be able to charge their vehicles in a frictionless manner. The thing that we will be really surprised by is where you end up seeing chargers and how you engage with those chargers from a transaction standpoint. – Matt StoverAs builders develop new master-planned communities and multi-family residences, EV charging infrastructure will be built into the development from the initial planning stages. An example of a new community that was built from the ground-up for electric vehicles is Babcock Ranch in Punta Gorda, FL. While Babcock Ranch was built for EVs, a majority of pre-existing residential infrastructure currently does not support EV charging. With a growing demand for electric vehicles and one-third of American's currently living in a rental home in the United States, having access to EV charging at home will become a consumer differentiator. In the future renters could opt for a residence that has EV charging. When you buy a house, having a charger in the house will be seen as an asset. And when you go rent a property and if there is charging that is there for you, you will perceive that as an asset, therefore pay more for that asset. – Matt StoverSince a majority of renters currently do not have access to EV charging at their residence, they have to rely on public charging infrastructure which tends to be unreliable. To address this issue, Ford has introduced the Ford Charge Angels program. Charge Angles actively monitor charger performance, communications, and billing protocols to ensure that chargers in the Ford BlueOval Charging Network are operating properly. There needs to be an improvement in the reliability of the charging infrastructure. – Matt StoverThe Ford BlueOval Charging Network is a network of networks. What we have done is worked with our partners to create access for our Ford customers to the most AC and DC public chargers in North America. – Matt StoverIn the network there are currently 75,000 EV chargers that allow EV drivers to charge without having to download multiple apps and create new accounts as it all runs through the FordPass app.Wrapping up the conversation, Matt shares his thoughts on the future of EV charging. The Scoop
Institutional appetite for digital assets "has not slowed," according to PolySign and MG Stover CEOs

The Scoop

Back in April, digital asset infrastructure provider PolySign acquired top fund administration firm MG Stover as reported by CoinDesk. At the time of acquisition, MG Stover had more than $40 billion in digital assets under administration.  This move coincided with PolySign completing its Series C fundraise, which included new powerhouse investors such as Soros Fund Management, Brevan Howard and GSR, along with former investors including Cowen Digital, who led PolySign's $54 million Series B last year. In this episode of The Scoop, Jack McDonald, chair and CEO of Polysign, and Matt Stover, CEO of MG Stover, sit down with host Frank Chaparro to record their first-ever podcast together, and to discuss the unwavering demand for digital asset-related products they are seeing from their clients. As Stover explained, while crypto prices may be down, there is still plenty of private funding flowing toward building out digital asset infrastructure: “We get to see both the liquid and illiquid on the investment side and there's so much capital still flowing into the private companies building infrastructure around this new asset class.” Although the recent market downturn has many market participants on edge, McDonald says the long-term view institutions from traditional finance have when it comes to digital assets make short-term market movements irrelevant. As McDonald said during the interview: “The long-term view that these traditional asset managers make in investing in this sort of way is really unaffected by the recent market downturns. They're taking a long-term view and they've done the work to make these decisions.” Episode 54 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded remotely with The Block's Frank Chaparro, Jack McDonald, Chair & CEO of PolySign, and Matt Stover, CEO of MG Stover. TWENTY-year NFL veteran Matt Stover joins The Game Plan to share the story of his transition from two-time Super Bowl Champion to empowering athletes, entertainers, and other philanthropists to easily set up and administer their own charitable organizations. In this episode, we'll hear what it's like to move with an NFL franchise in the dark of the night (Cleveland Browns) to a new city (Baltimore Ravens). Matt also talks about how the role of a placekicker is often an isolated position, and how that independent sense of diligence and drive has carried him to success in the development of the Players Philanthropy Fund (“PPF”). He also discusses the impact Ray Lewis had on his approach to life on and off the field. In 2002, Stover and his wife formed the Matt Stover Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the Baltimore community and helping those in need through a variety of programs, outreach, and support. Hey Everyone, Today’s episode is one of my favorite conversations I had at Super Bowl and probably some of the best pragmatic advice I’ve received in a long time. And it came from the oldest player to ever play in the Super Bowl, Matt Stover. Matt created the Players Philanthropy Fund, his mission is to help athletes such as Ray Lewis and Ed Reed manage charities that are fiscally sound. Don’t forget to text me at (949) 298-2905 and let me know who you would love to hear next on The Playbook.

Nearly 20 Years strapping on an NFL helmet. Several NFL records. A right foot that accounted for over 2000 points in his career! But today’s guest on my #MakeYourMark podcast, Matt Stover, is just getting started. He’s taken his deep interest in philanthropy and is channeling it into his company, helping charities raise money for great causes with fewer challenges. And he was ready for all of this even during his rookie year!   “Right at the very beginning I understood that I needed to start thinking about the fact that my career will come to an end one day, and I will be a young man when that happens.”   Matt was never sure which season, much less game, would be his last, and he felt a strong sense of responsibility in being fully prepared for his next career. Winning a Super Bowl at the age of 42 was the perfect send off, and he did it on his own terms, which in football, happens all too rarely.    “As an athlete, if the financial piece is what motivates you to be great, it will let you down. It has to come from your heart and be a passion of yours for you to be the greatest for your team.”   You’ll hear about Matt’s transition, his company, outworking and outsmarting, and so much more! Score some points and give this a listen! “With the NFL you’re constantly evaluated, even in practice, and then you’re evaluated in public every time you go out on the field. But you take that on because we’re in the entertainment business.”   “When you look at how it turned out for me, it was based on the understanding of what my limitations were, and then refining what talents I did have, and then I just outworked everybody.”     “I always planned financially on what amount I would have to make if my career was over that year, and what did I have in the bank to replace the expenses that I had.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode:    2:00 - Introduction   3:56 - A short spark to a nearly 20-year career  5:37 - “Give me the ball, Coach” 6:59 - The punting technique   7:00 - Outworking & Outsmarting  8:00 - Injured reserve  9:40 - Developing a lot of grit  10:29 - Mistake by the Lake  11:00 - Browns Move to Baltimore  12:50 - Everyone thinks being in the NFL is so glamorous   14:30 - Never missed a game  17:29 - A deep snapper  19:00 - The athlete transition  19:40 - Why not me?  22:00 - Understanding your worth 24:00 - Doing what you love  25:00 - A revolutionary program  26:45 - The Player’s Philanthropy Fund  30:30 - The goal is to get more funds into the market   33:50 - Creating relationships in the market  35:43 - There to protect the individual, the athlete and the brand  37:00 - Utilize the funds  39:00 - Educating the athletes  41:00 - When the reality hits  43:00 - You’ve got to want it  44:35 - Hit Your Mark - the # 2004? 45:30 - 38 straight games with a field goal  How to get involved   Be sure to connect with me on Social Media @MarkMoyerCoach and go to my website, www.markmoyer.com to get access to the tips and strategies that my coaching clients get directly.   If you would like to be a guest on the Make Your Mark podcast and/or know someone else who has either been an athlete, in a role within the sports industry, or a military veteran, and have made a successful transition into a new role, I’d love to hear from you! They should be compensated by the universities in addition to their free education.· 36:45 Giving back effort and love to your fellow man tends to build a stronger community· 38:57 Brian Billick created the blueprint for a game manager quarterback. I allow failure to make me better and ensure that I have purpose in my life. · 52:10 What you need to know before kicking a game-winning field goal. Let's Do Lunch! returns to the King & Prince, in St. Simons Island, Georgia celebrating their 78 anniversary with a new executive dining staff. Executive Chef Jason Brumfiel, Chef Baker Sam Hepburn, and Food and Beverage Director Allen Lancaster join host Robin Milling for a weekend filled with superb meals fit for a king or queen, which can only be enhanced by their gorgeous southern hospitality. Chef Jason's love affair with cooking began in Indiana with his dad owning a variety of eateries from 'a little soda shop to an American style pizza place.' Giving up his dream to be a star football player and landscaping job swatting bees and dodging lightning bolts; he made his way to the kitchen as a painter for the Holiday Inn. When the dishwasher was MIA, Chef stepped in and his cooking career began. Since then he's prepared meals for NFL players like Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Stover which no doubt completed his boyhood fantasies. His southern influences from New Orleans are evident in his Georgia Low Country Shrimp & Grits with black-eyed peas, andouille sausage and chorizo flavored grits. Journeying across the pond to the U.K. to be with his wife Amanda, he brought back a taste of Thailand to enhance the King & Prince menu. Complimenting and accompanying Chef is the jovial Chef Baker Sam Hepburn who's Strata and New Orleans Smoky Bacon & Pecan Praline are to die for. Spirits were unleashed by food and beverage director Allen Lancaster who's served high tea to Hilary Clinton. His signature mint julep cocktails go down way too easy!
