For over 25 years, he has been helping leaders and their teams access breakthrough performance and results. James has worked with organizations such as Bank of America, IBM, Nespresso, Kellogg's, Dow Chemical, Athletes First, and 24-Hour Fitness to transform their cultures into ones of exceptional collaboration and achievement. Our conversation emphasizes the need for courage in leadership and the significance of fostering an environment where employees feel valued and understood. SHOW NOTES  SPONSORED BY: Power of You! Find out more at https://leader.blainebartlett.com/power-of-you Summary In this conversation, Blaine and James McPartland explore the themes of personal growth, leadership, and the importance of understanding one's own gifts. They discuss the concept of 'unopened gifts'—the potential within individuals that often goes untapped due to fear and societal expectations. McPartland shares his journey of self-discovery and the realization that true leadership involves connecting with others on a personal level. The discussion emphasizes the need for courage in leadership and the significance of fostering an environment where employees feel valued and understood. Takeaways The soul of business is the only true differentiator. Understanding what matters to employees is crucial for engagement. Courage in leadership often feels uncomfortable. People hear what they see; actions speak louder than words. Unopened gifts represent untapped potential within individuals. Leadership is about influencing others to co-create a worthy ideal. Personal growth often involves facing uncomfortable truths. The hardest relationship to navigate is often with oneself. True leadership requires vulnerability and humility. Creating a culture of openness can lead to greater organizational success. #business #leadershipdevelopment #personalgrowth #unopenedgifts #courage #organizationalculture #coaching #self-awareness #transformation #employeeengagement Learn more about your ad choices. This conversation offers an in-depth look at the evolving landscape of philanthropy, global health, and development funding, with a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. The discussion examines how current geopolitical and economic pressures are reshaping what effective partnership, sustainability, and impact look like for funders, governments, and civil society. The episode explores a wide range of thematic priorities including maternal, newborn, and child health; pediatric and adolescent HIV; early childhood development; human resources for health; and humanitarian response. It illuminates why deeply understanding country-level contexts—systems, supply chains, human capital, financing constraints, and government priorities—is central to strategic philanthropy. A significant portion of the conversation addresses how private philanthropy can play a constructive, catalytic role amid a period of unusually rapid change in global aid flows. Topics include the risks of backsliding on key health indicators, strategies for identifying truly local and embedded implementing partners, and the importance of moving from project-based funding toward general operating support to strengthen long-term institutional capacity. The episode also examines the realities and complexities of co-funding with other foundations, multilaterals, and bilaterals—what genuine partnership requires, how priorities are aligned, and how fragmentation can be reduced. A major highlight is the creation of the Beginnings Fund, a large-scale collaborative effort uniting several private funders to meaningfully advance maternal and newborn health across multiple countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Looking ahead, the conversation outlines both the challenges and opportunities that lie between now and 2030. It reflects on where renewed discipline, focus, and collaboration are most urgently needed, and why the current moment may also be a rare chance for long-overdue recalibration in global health and development. Being a part of a close-knit neighborhood is something that many people aspire to. Barbecues, football games, and community events can help neighbors feel a sense of connectedness and community. But neighborhoods can also be places of separation and division, with boundaries drawn between families and neighbors. Join us today for a discussion with a former graduate research associate who has written an article about one Kentucky community that was torn apart by violence shortly before the Civil War. Kevin McPartland is a visiting assistant professor in public history at the University of Missouri—Columbia. In 2022, he was a Graduate Research Associate at the Civil War Governors of Kentucky. His article “‘He Has Ever Been Considered, a Good and True Hearted Citizen': Neighborhood and Community in the Wadlington Case” appeared in the Summer 2022 edition of the Register. C., Druzgal, T. J., Pelphrey, K. A., Van Horn, J. D., For the GENDAAR Research Consortium Abstract: The neuronal differences contributing to the etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are still not well defined. Previous studies have suggested that myelin and axons are disrupted during development in ASD. By combining structural and diffusion MRI techniques, myelin and axons can be assessed using extracellular water, aggregate g-ratio, and a novel metric termed aggregate conduction velocity, which is related to the capacity of the axon to carry information. In this study, several innovative cellular microstructural methods, as measured from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are combined to characterize differences between ASD and typically developing adolescent participants in a large cohort. We first examine the relationship between each metric, including microstructural measurements of axonal and intracellular diffusion and the T1/T2 ratio. We then demonstrate the sensitivity of these metrics by characterizing differences between ASD and neurotypical participants, finding widespread increases in extracellular water in the cortex and decreases in aggregate g-ratio and aggregate conduction velocity throughout the cortex, subcortex, and white matter skeleton. This study is the first to reveal that ASD involves differences of myelin and axonal development with implications for neuronal function. We also introduce a novel neuroimaging metric, aggregate conduction velocity, that is highly sensitive to these changes. We conclude that ASD may be characterized by otherwise intact structural connectivity but that functional connectivity may be attenuated by network properties affecting neural transmission speed. This effect may explain the putative reliance on local connectivity in contrast to more distal connectivity observed in ASD. Copy rights belong to original authors. Last Friday, 6th Judicial District Judge Sean McPartland found Davis guilty of a lesser charge — second-degree murder. In his ruling, McPartland said Davis on Sept. 28, 2017, fatally stabbed girlfriend Carrie Davis, 29, of Marion, under diminished responsibility that didn't allow him to form specific intent necessary for a conviction of first-degree murder. An influx of federal funding awarded this week will aid in Linn County's recovery from the 2020 derecho, fueling a massive investment in the construction of 290 new housing units after much of the area's housing stock was damaged by the storm's ferocious winds. The city of Cedar Rapids received more than $24 million through the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funds — the vast majority of approximately $38 million awarded to Linn County, which bore the brunt of the derecho's devastation.Overall, the award supports 94 multifamily units and 76 for-sale single-family units within Cedar Rapids. In other parts of Linn County, the funds will support 92 rental units and 28 single-family units.Cedar Rapids Community Development Director Jennifer Pratt said the funds will help provide opportunities for infill development and create housing throughout the community.A mixed-use development with Scooter's Coffee, commercial space and residential units is coming to the northeast side of Iowa City. The Iowa City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the first consideration of rezoning 3.87 acres of vacant land on the corner of North Dodge Street and Scott Boulevard, across from Iowa City Fire Station 4. The rezoning still needs to be approved two more times.Mark Holtkamp of Solon is working with Axiom Consultants on the project. The land is owned by GreenState Credit Union. The proposed Scooter's Coffee would be located on the corner of North Dodge Street and Scott Boulevard. The mixed-use building will be separate from the coffee shop and is expected to have ground floor retail with upper story residential consisting of eight one-bedroom units. A restaurant is also proposed for this building.

Welcome to Labor Day Weekend! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4. Some cooler weather is arriving just in time for the long weekend. According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny with a slight chance for rain after 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Cedar Rapids area. The high temperature will be near 80 degrees. On Sunday it will be partly sunny with a high near 77 degrees. And on Labor Day Monday it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 82 degrees. After weeks of confusion and uncertainty, dog owners in the Benton County town of Keystone were served written notices to remove their “pitbulls” from town. The Benton County Sheriff's Office served written notices to dog owners on Friday before the holiday weekend. The county and the city of Keystone have breed-specific ordinances banning pitbulls. MaKinzie Brecht, a Keystone resident and pit bull owner, said she and a few other residents have received official notices from the City of Keystone and the Benton County Sheriff's office. The notice states that if the owner “fails to remove the dog as directed and within the prescribed time” of three days, “the City of Keystone will take such steps as necessary to remove said animal from the city limits.” The notice states that those served have two days to appeal after receiving the notice. The notices arrived on Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend. Brecht said the dog owners in Keystone have collectively hired a lawyer to deal with this situation moving forward. A Marion man, who had his conviction of killing his former girlfriend overturned in 2020, waived his right to a jury trial and will have a bench trial — meaning the judge will determine the verdict — later this month. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/retrial-for-marion-man-charged-with-killing-ex-girlfriend-will-be-delayed/ (Greg Davis, 30, charged with first-degree murder,) told 6th Judicial District Judge Sean McPartland that he knowingly and voluntarily waived a jury trial during a pretrial hearing Friday. He also will submit a written waiver to the court. Davis will again claim insanity or diminished capacity as his defense in the second trial, which starts Sept. 13 in Linn County District Court. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/marion-man-found-guilty-in-fatal-stabbing-of-ex-girlfriend-faces-life-in-prison/ (Davis was convicted of first-degree murder )by a Linn County jury in 2018 but the https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/murder-conviction-overturned-for-marion-man-who-stabbed-ex-girlfriend-26-times-and-hid-body-in-roll/ (Iowa Supreme Court overturned the verdict) in a 4-3 decision in 2020. The justices found the trial judge — McPartland — failed to instruct the jury regarding Davis' insanity or diminished capacity defense on the first-degree murder charge, which meant jurors couldn't consider it as part of their verdict. According to the Associated Press, NASA aimed for a Saturday launch of its new moon rocket, after fixing fuel leaks and working around a bad engine sensor that foiled the first try. The inaugural flight of the 322-foot rocket — the most powerful ever built by NASA — was delayed late in the countdown Monday. Atop the rocket is a crew capsule with three test dummies that will fly around the moon and back over the course of six weeks — NASA's first such attempt since the Apollo program 50 years ago. NASA wants to wring out the spacecraft before strapping in astronauts on the next planned flight in two years. There is also a local tie to the moon missions. https://www.collinsaerospace.com/news/news/2020/01/collins-signs-320m-contract-lockheed-martin-provide-critical-subsystems-nasa-orion-spacecraft (Collins Aerospace, Cedar Rapids' largest employer, signed a contract with Lockheed Martin in 2020) to provide systems to support NASA's Orion spacecraft fleet for Artemis missions III through VIII, the
