Dive in to Triple M's latest gig review, featuring the iconic Beasts of Bourbon's unforgettable performance at the Metro Theatre in Sydney. Despite the dreary weather, the legendary band brought their unmistakable grunt to the stage, thrilling fans with a night of raw energy and timeless tracks. In this special episode, our host Row dives deep into the heart of the show, starting from the moment Tex Perkins, with his characteristic swagger, led the band through a set list that promised—and delivered—an exceptional rock experience. This episode isn't just a gig review; it's a tribute to the enduring spirit of The Beasts, who, against the backdrop of personal battles and the bittersweet realities of life, showcased their unparalleled talent and commitment to rock 'n' roll. With the original lineup of Tex Perkins, James Baker, Boris Sudjovic, Kim Salmon, and Charlie Owen taking the stage, the event marked a poignant moment in the band's history, celebrating their journey and the indelible mark they've left on the music world. Row captures the essence of the night, from the high-energy performances of "I Don't Care About Nothing Anymore" and "Saturated" to a bold cover of The Rolling Stones' "Cocksucker Blues," culminating in the rousing finale, "Ten Wheels for Jesus." The Beasts' reputation for raucous live shows and their notoriety for debaucherous tales were all on full display, proving once again that rock 'n' roll isn't just music—it's a lifestyle.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We were first smashed over the face by her incredible voice with 2019's debut ‘Salt' and today, we have a new album to get excited about! ‘Light, Dark, Light Again' was four years in the making. With a pandemic and a ‘work trip' to North Carolina in between. And it was worth the wait! Tim chats to Angie at Sydney's Metro Theatre in a little dungeon room while her band rehearses above. Hear her mantras, potty mouth and all around good vibe in this very fun chat, with name-drops like Bon Jovi & Katy Perry to look forward to. Enjoy!

This week's super long Declassify welcomes pianist, vocalist, music educator and feminist ethnomusicologist, Lolita Emmanuel. Lolita is an Assyrian and Armenian musician, born on Cabrogal land and navigating many worlds. Lolita’s experience as a performer spans across venues such as AGNSW and Sydney Opera House, to The Metro Theatre and North Byron Parklands for Splendour in the Grass festival. Her work is actively inspired by her experience as a young woman in stateless diaspora. Guided by the tutelage of Dr. Natalia Andreeva and masterclasses with Armenian pianist Anahit Nercessian, Lolita is particularly drawn to expressions of cultural identity and is strong advocate for the continued preservation and reconstruction of Assyrian, and more broadly, at-risk culture through music. This week’s conversation goes through everything from social justice in music, unpacking the notion of performative action and the progressive orchestra and the power of critical thinking. ---------------Selected Resources (full list available in transcript):Lolita Emmanuel: https://lolitaemmanuel.com/ Phillip Ewell’s talk and work on Schenker and the White Racial Frame:https://musictheoryswhiteracialframe.wordpress.com/2020/05/08/music-theorys-future/ National Arab Orchestra performance of Bayati Medley (Arranged by Michael Ibrahim)https://youtu.be/9uD6x-Q983gEdward Said, Orientalism. The Gareth Emery Podcast - Episode 294 (Live from the Metro Theatre, Sydney)
For most of us, singing doesn't feel natural.Unless you're hidden away in the comfort of your own car, or belting out 80s tunes in a karaoke bar, singing is very nerve wracking. And so, the fear of humiliation and embarrassment keeps our mouths shut. So, what shall we do about singing?Joining me this week is director of Pub Choir, Astrid Jorgensen. Pub Choir has become a monthly ritual for many in Brisbane - where Astrid teaches average singers like you and me a three-part harmony, which is sung before the end of the night with voices a thousand strong. It's a really cool idea that encourages everyone to sing loudly and proudly. Astrid shares the importance of using the instrument that we all have inside of us - our voices. You can find Astrid on Instagram and Twitter, and more information about Pub Choir is at pubchoir.com.au.Pub Choir is also coming to Sydney for a special show at the Metro Theatre on Monday 20th April. Warehouses, dive bars, boats... if there's a PA set up somewhere in New Zealand, there's a good chance Miss June have rocked it and then trashed the place. As one of the country's most sought-after live acts, the Auckland-based quartet have put in the hard yards on songs that are equal parts noisy, hooky and defiant - all before even so much as putting out their debut album. Today, that all changes - their debut album is finally here, and it's well worth the wait. Prior to all of that, however, lead vocalist Annabelle Lidell and guitarist Jun Park pulled up some stools prior to a gig in Canberra supporting Ruby Fields. Through fits of giggles and a half-dozen tangents, we spoke of the tight-knit NZ music community, the hotspots of the islands and how to handle a crowd that has no idea who you are. is out today via Frenchkiss Records.Bad Luck Party Catch Miss June live next week in Australia: September 11 - The Vanguard, Sydney w/ Georgia June and Good PashSeptember 12 - Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne w/ Dune Rats and West ThebartonSeptember 13 - Metro Theatre, Sydney w/ Dune Rats and West ThebartonSeptember 14 - The Triffid, Brisbane w/ Dune Rats and West Thebarton Special thanks to Rachel-Jones Williams, Sony Music Australia, Frenchkiss Records, the University of Canberra and Evan Birtwell. Whether you know every word to every song or you're still trying to figure out if it's double G or double S at the end, Skegss have been more or less inescapable in the last 18 months and change. Their cult fanbase has poured over into the mainstream, filling out venues across the country and scoring high rotation on triple j. One's a fearless frontman, at the helm of one of the liveliest and most exciting bands in post-hardcore, letlive. The other is a shredder of the highest order, having served as a sturdy sideman in Every Time I Die for nearly 20 years. Their respective bands teamed up for a co-headlining run in January of 2017 around the second annual Unify festival - and just before they played to a packed Metro Theatre in Sydney, Jason Aalon Butler and Andy Williams took Bar Bands on a dinner date; figuratively recording on the go in the back of a 12-seater. We talk wrestling (naturally), early bands, childhood performances and going crazy on stage. Low Teens and If I'm the Devil... by Every Time I Die and letlive., respectively, are out now via Epitaph. This week on TransCanada Music West (Friday at 8pm MT), we bring you the live synth-pop sounds of Rococode, recorded live at Rifflandia! The duo is made up of Laura Smith and Andrew Braun, a pair of Vancouver-based musicians who met while attending jazz college. Laura made her start in music backing up some of the biggest indie acts in the Vancouver scene, including Said the Whale, Prairie Cat, Language Arts and Hannah Georgas. Andrew, who hails from Manitoba, was a backing player on Laura’s solo debut ‘Sea of Stars’ in 2008. It wasn’t long before the creative relationship evolved, and the duo collaborate on their 2012 debut Guns, Sex, and Glory, produced by Mother Mother front-man Ryan Guildemond. On this episode of TransCanada Music West, you’ll get a live preview of songs set for release next week on the band’s sophomore LP, Don’t Worry It Will Be Dark Soon. The live concert recording features Jason Cook on drums, Robbie Driscoll on bass, Laura Smith on keys and vocals, and Andrew Braun on guitar, keys and vocals. This week on the podcast, we bring you live music from Calgary’s own Boreal Sons. You don’t often hear bands boast about people falling asleep at their shows, but Boreal Sons are masters as orchestrating dreamy sonic landscapes. We’ll hear songs from their most recent album Threadbare, and some brand new songs from a forthcoming record that is set for release in the fall of 2016. Recorded live at Metro Theatre at the Victoria Conservatory of Music during Breakout West, featuring Regan Mclean on bass and vocals, Zachary Schultz on percussion, and Evan Acheson on lead vocals and keys, enjoy this set of great live songs by a Calgary favourite.
This week on TransCanada Music West, we feature the instrumental styling of Victoria's Weird Party! The five piece group describes their sound as a “weird ambient melange” drawing on elements of funk, jazz, and soul to create a somewhat psychedelic sound. The band is made up of staples of the Victoria music scene, including Andrew Poirier, Chris Mackenzie, Piers Henwood, and William Farrant. In 2012, the band entered the studio with Ted Gowan of Tegan and Sara behind the board. The group would record their improvisational debut album live off-the-floor in just one weekend. They followed up that record in 2014 with their sophomore album Mellow Funk Vol. 1. This week's feature set includes live renditions of songs featured on that album, and a brand new, yet to be released track.
This week on the show: indie-rock melodies delivered live by Saskatoon’s own Close Talker. The band has only been a going concern for three years, but they’ve already captured national attention. Close Talker formed when lead singer Will Quiring met guitarist Matthew Kopperud at a B.C. bible college. In the spring of 2013, Close Talker became finalists in a cross-Canada music competition on the merits of their single, “By the Lake" from their debut 2013 debut Timbers. The album was release was written and recorded in just two weeks. But it so well received, it put Close Talker on radar of notable Canadian indie label, Nevado Music. In the summer of 2014, the band entered Montreal’s Breakglass Studios to record the follow-up record. It was produced by Besnard Lakes co-founder Jace Lasek (Wolf Parade, Stars, Mark Berube,Young Galaxy.) Unlike the quick outing that was their last recording, the group describes the approach to their sophomore effort, Flux, as a more “intentional” one. The band spent more than a year and a half on getting the songs on this record just right. This week on TransCanada Music West, you’ll hear more than a few of those songs. On a particularly spirited episode of “My Favorite Album” this week, 2-time ARIA winner, possible Eurovision contender and loose unit Megan Washington joins host Jeremy Dylan for a rave on Rufus Wainwright's 2001 sophomore album “Poses”. They break down classic track “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” and along the way talk about the musically abusive relationships within the Wainwright family, the uncanny parallels between “Poses” and Meg's new album “There There”, feeling old fashioned in contemporary music, the debauchery and cattiness of Rufus's lyrics, why time slows down on stage and why performing at Triple J's “Beat the Drum” has inspired Meg to make a disco album - plus Blacula! My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker and music industry exec from Sydney, Australia. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos.
