Timothy Walker is a folk musician and singer-songwriter originally from the Atlanta area, but currently residing in Davis as he works on his PhD in English literature. He performs and writes music under the stage name Threadbare, Brother. His first full-length record, When the War is Through, was released in 2011. The album explores the themes of spiritual transformation in the midst of personal grief and uncertainty. After a long hiatus from performing, he is working on a new set of songs that seek to portray the complexities of queer love, loss, and longing in the aftermath of religious trauma. We meet leading artist Jonathan Baldock who works across multiple platforms including sculpture, installation and performance. With work often taking on a biographical form, Jonathan Baldock addresses the trauma, stress, sensuality, mortality and spirituality around our relationship to the body and the space it inhabits.Baldock's work is saturated with humour and wit, as well as an uncanny, macabre quality that channels his longstanding interest in myth and folklore. He has an ongoing focus on the contrast between the material qualities of ceramic and fabric in his work. Concerned with removing the functional aspects of the materials he uses, Baldock instead works in a performative way through his sculptural assemblages, bringing the viewer, the object and the space they simultaneously occupy into question as a theatrical or ritualistic act.Jonathan Baldock was born in 1980 in Kent, UK. He lives and works in London. He graduated from Winchester School of Art with a BA in Painting (2000-2003), followed by the Royal College of Art, London with an MA in Painting (2003-2005).In 2021 Baldock had solo exhibitions at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, Spain and at Accelerator, Stockholm, Sweden. He participated in group shows in 2021 including ‘Threadbare' at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London; ‘Human Conditions of Clay' at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, Wales and ‘Right About Now' at No.9 Cork Street, London. Baldock's work was included in the inaugural Towner International biennial at Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, UK in October 2020. Baldock's first solo exhibition with Stephen Friedman Gallery opened in September 2019 and presented a series of ceramic masks featuring bright colours and outlandish expressions. This show coincided with the presentation of a large-scale, interactive sculpture by Baldock at Fitzrovia Chapel, London during Frieze week. In the spring of 2019, Baldock's solo exhibition ‘Facecrime' opened at Camden Arts Centre, London following a Freelands Lomax Ceramics Fellowship. Episode Summary: Lisa Appelo and I talk about how to hang onto threadbare hope when our circumstances are too hard to handle. Our guest today speaks from her own personal experience. When her husband died suddenly, Lisa was left alone to walk herself and her seven children through loss and grief. She shares what she learned. Quotables from the episode: When life felt incredibly bad, I needed to know life could be good again. Sometimes we have to let go of the life we wanted and take hold of the life in front of us. It's okay to feel our emotions, but they do a poor job telling us the truth. Utter dependence on God isn't what we want, but it's where God designed us to be. Loss revealed where I had misplaced my hope and I learned to hang onto Biblical hope when my emotions were screaming different. God does give us too much to handle so that we will learn to depend on him and relinquish the myths of self-control and self-sufficiency. When we become helplessly dependent on God we will see God is faithful and that He will come through. I've seen that being in a place of helpless dependence on God is the best place to be. Even in the unknown, we can thank God. God doesn't have a plan B! He already knows how He is going to see you through! The 3 best words you can say to someone going through a difficult time is “You're not alone.” And they aren't…even when it feels like they are alone, God is with them and will not forsake them. Even as life feels better now, as I'm used to the pace, weight and isolation of single parenting following loss, I never want to forget I'm utterly dependent on God for wisdom, guidance, provision and so much more. I might be facing a scary future, but I'd learned God's promises would hold there. We can daily anchor in God's Word to let Him refocus our perspective, renew our hope and exchange our emotions for His truth. We can remember God's past faithfulness and His character. We can tender our heart to God so that we don't waste the suffering. We can look for God's good hand all around us, which is such a boost to our faith that God is working even in painful circumstances. For the one who feels underwater in circumstances that are too much to handle, I'd tell them to look to God to do what we cannot. We can't fix a broken heart or force an outcome. But in that place, we can enter a trust relationship God designed for us. Hello and welcome back to Hustlers for a Cause Season 3!!! Starting us off this season is an incredibly inspirational story that will leave you determined to make your own impact. Social innovator, entrepreneur, and advocate for vulnerable children; Nicholas is a champion for future generations. While working in Tijuana, Mexico, Sandoval came to the realization that while the orphanages he was volunteering at provided shelter, safety, and sustenance for the children in its walls. The long term benefits were nonexistent for these children to be set up for healthy lives. Threadbare clothes, old plastic toys- loved one day and broken the next, and three processed meals a day were the reality for these children.    Nicholas wanted more.  He wanted to give these kids a hand up in life, not just another hand out.    He realized that these children, if given the opportunity, had the potential to flourish into productive individuals as adults. The opportunities though were lacking. Before long, Nicholas left his company to work full time for “Create Purpose.” An organization that focuses on being a positive and formative experience for orphaned children. His model completely breaks the mold of what people expect from a charity that works with orphans in other parts of the world. It starts with basic nutrition, learning how to garden, eat well and make healthier choices. If a child can move through this program successfully ( meeting certain criteria and milestones) they are invited to begin learning how to use computers.    Not just your basic on and off, typing as fast as possible and how to sign into your gmail account. This course also shows you how to program, and work that is commonplace nowadays like excel and outlook. The idea is to open more doors than ever before; and they're seeing results.
