"I talked to my son a week ago. He was going to be home in one month. 30 days and he would be returning home from the Army. He was an honorable part of Operation Enduring Freedom stationed in Afghanistan and my baby is headed home. I can wait for a hug. I just can't wait." Michelle never got that hug. The next time she saw her son, he was in a casket. He died with glory serving his country, the United States of America. But all the glory in the world would not replace the pain of her broken heart. Her son was now a fallen soldier. Confusion. Depression. Moving forward. Cant move forward. Support. Gold Star Mom. As a military mom, I can't image the pain. Michelle later learned her son was not afraid to die. He was afraid to be forgotten! So today we honor him and the other soldier who died beside him. A news article read:Two soldiers with Fort Collins ties are being remembered today after they were killed fighting in Afghanistan.Sgt. Aaron B. Cruttenden, 25, and CPL. Dale J. Kridlo, 33, were killed in action Nov. 7 when their patrol, which was sweeping for explosives in Operation Enduring Freedom, came under small-arms fire in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. Michelle is now President of the American Gold Star Mothers in the state of FL. We are here to honor her son Dale and give recognition to all the gold star mothers out there. His newest company, Volley, was built upon that foundation. Volley helps teams communicate better and escape the problem of "Death by Meetings" by implementing asynchronous verbal conversations, which fill in the gap between text-based tools like Slack and video-chat apps like Zoom. Josh's work has been highlighted in TechCrunch, Mashable, Entrepreneur, Inc., and Forbes. Let me know what you think.... Welcome back to another episode of Monetization Nation with Michelle Dale. Previously, we discussed how Michelle began an online business while working from home, traveling abroad, meeting her husband, and becoming a mother. We also discussed her business model with the different services and consulting she provides, tips on how to build connections, and suggestions for those starting YouTube videos. Today we will be focusing on the way that Michelle's digital business has evolved since COVID and the 12 strategies that helped her business to grow from zero revenue to $20,000 in one day. So for those wanting to start an online business with the freedom to live anywhere you want, this episode is for you. From No Revenue to $20,000 in One Day When Michelle created her very first online course, she was earning around $20,000 per month just from services. After she launched this brand new program, she made $20,000 in one day! “I was spending the whole month with my team, working, and servicing clients to make $20,000. Then suddenly, I do this one product launch, and I make $20,000 in one day. It was a moment where I knew I had to evolve.” Many of Michelle's courses use different types of recurring revenue, beginning with payment plans. It's more important to her that she has someone sign up for £200 a month recurring for two years than to call it good with one payment. This is a great way to set up courses because first of all, there is stability in knowing how much money will come in every month. Second, it's convenient for students taking the course because they can spread their payments out. “I think it helps build trust because I know at any time if they feel like they're not getting a good investment in my business, then they can cancel their payment. But, many people end up completing a full year or two of payments because they're getting the value from it. So for me, recurring is better,” Michelle said. I agree with Michelle because this way we're not locking people into long-term contracts. They can get out any time they want! This forces us to keep the customers' best interest in mind and strive to keep them happy every month. It also forces us to elevate our services and not rely upon customers having to stay with us, but doing so because they choose to stay. Here are strategies Michelle has taken to monetize her business, and tips that helped her generate $20,000 in one product launch: Start with a “why.” She had a purpose to help, support, and walk others through starting or growing an online business. She did this by providing services to consult, mentor, and provide resources through the steps she took alone. Choose a niche & build an audience. Michelle chose to focus on services for clients involved with digital operations. This allowed her to build an audience of 500 email subscribers in 3 months by doing daily YouTube videos and creating blogs. Offer a course for individuals to test. With a specific number of individuals, Michelle gave her course for free to accumulate feedback and testimonials. It's all about value. If people feel they're getting the value out of what we're investing in, they will stay if it's possible for them. Charge more for courses. Michelle took Yaro Starak's advice. Instead of offering her course for free, she saw the value in her products, provided that value, and charged $1,000 for her course. Revise courses and create more. Michelle has since revised her courses and launched additional courses for others to choose from. Be impartial. Michelle is very impartial in terms of people who come to her. If individuals go to her, want to work with her, and feel happy with her services, then she of course wants her customers to stay. However, if they're not happy, she would rather they invest somewhere else. Don't build a business around fear. Many individuals can be afraid of losing clients or their competition. That is something we need to let go of. Michelle puts it like this: “If I believe in what I'm doing and I know it gets results for people, I don't want to cling on to people who don't feel they're getting results or a good investment from me.” Make sure to coach and train the right kind of people. We need to make sure we are best for our clients regarding the niche, style, etc. Understand that we can't please everybody. “You want to provide a lot of value for the people who are going to derive the most value from you,” Michelle said. Be our best every day. Show up and make sure that we're there for our customers. They need to be able to have access to us. Be present, be available, and provide good support so if customers need us, they have a place they can go to with questions or needs. Be open. Michelle encourages opening our hearts to people so they can trust us and buy more from us. She gets a lot of repeat customers because of the care she provides to others, and this helps in building connections with them. Go the extra mile. Sometimes Michelle likes to do “one-off workshops,” “one-off coaching sessions,” and more. She has a lot of faithful customers who join or buy her offers because they feel that she cares. “And it's true, I do. I think a lot of that is missing from the digital world these days,” she said. COVID: A Virtual Awakening The individuals Michelle is working with during COVID have had many different experiences working online. “Different people experiencing different situations have had very much to do with their mindset,” Michelle said. She has had virtual assistants who have seen this time as an opportunity, and they've been able to grow their business since. However, she's had other virtual assistants who saw this as the end of days, and their businesses had to shut down. This shows how much attitude actually does shape a business. Michelle has found that this time has allowed her more opportunities and success. “I specifically had a vision for growing the consulting and program side of my business, and COVID has allowed me to do that,” she said. Many individuals are wanting to learn how to work remotely, so Michelle has begun focusing more on the marketing of her digital products. She has had to take a step back from servicing her clients, which has meant more opportunities for some of her virtual assistants. She said, “For me, it's not so much how COVID has affected my business, it's more about how COVID has allowed me to put changes in place which I wanted to do anyway.” Because Michelle has focused on monetization and building a recurring revenue early on in her career, she can now focus on things that have more meaning in her life. Before she began this switch, many individuals were contacting her with questions such as: How can you do what you do from abroad? How is it working with kids? How are you able to move around? Michelle took so much time answering these questions when she had the realization: “I'll create a digital program. I'll create a product where I can answer all these questions without having to answer everyone individually,” Michelle said, and she did just that. Connect with Michelle If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about Michelle or connect with her, you can find her on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/virtualmissfriday/, email her at any time to support@virtualmissfriday.com, or check out her website www.virtualmissfriday.com. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Michelle for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Attitude can shape a business. COVID can allow for more opportunities that were not possible before. Evolving and innovating are okay. Recurring revenue is beneficial for two reasons: First, there is stability in knowing how much money comes in every month. Second, it's convenient for students taking the course because they can spread their payments out. They can also cancel anytime so they don't feel locked in. There are many different types of recurring revenue. Which ones will best work for your business and niche? Have a certain number of individuals test your course. This will help you make adjustments where needed, and receive feedback and testimonials. Be impartial. If you can't best help your clients, don't cling for them to stay. But if you can, do everything to go the extra mile for them such as providing them with unexpected things. Don't build a business around fear of losing clients or the competition. If we believe in what we're doing and know it will provide a good investment for clients, don't fear. Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? Did you like today's episode? What would it be like to make a great living while traveling the world? Michelle is a digital nomad who has unlocked the secrets of this lifestyle by balancing work from home and traveling abroad at the same time. She is the founder of Virtual Miss Friday (an online business consultancy), Academy (a built-in virtual assistant service), and the creator of 1inSourcing, which is a service specializing in serving six and seven-figure business owners. Michelle began her first business at the age of 24, after leaving England and feeling unfulfilled with the typical career ladder. She landed in Egypt and not only found great success working online, but met her husband, became a mother, and pursued dreams she had of experiencing real freedom. She provides online training programs for freelancers and virtual assistants, and she now supports men and women to reach their professional and personal aspirations with the freedom of a digital business. “I think the biggest thing for anyone if you really want to succeed, is to get very clear on why you must succeed. Build everything from there, and know that there is no such thing as failure unless you give up. So, keep going,” Michelle said. As I spoke with this successful woman, she shared with me her story, the services and programs she provides, how she connects with customers, and tips on how to create successful YouTube videos. The Start of a New Beginning Michelle was not happy working long hours, stuck in a typical work-life, and doing it all so young after leaving school at the age of sixteen. After returning home from work one night, she approached her front door that had been torn off the hinges, walked inside her home, and discovered that everything was gone including her birth certificate, utility bills, and more. As if a sign told Michelle that nothing was keeping her in England, she looked down at the ground to find her passport. “The only thing that I had left was something that would allow me to travel. The next day, I walked into work and told everybody at work what happened. I said, ‘I'm quitting my job!' I put my house on the market to sell it, and I went to the travel agent to book a one-way ticket to Egypt, which was exactly three months later. I arrived in Egypt and never looked back,” Michelle said. A Business Model of Services & Consulting After many changes and at the age of 24, Michelle began her own business. She wanted to provide services to help entrepreneurs, individuals who wanted to work from home, and those starting or growing their own businesses. She also wanted to advise and consult individuals with the same tools that she learned on her own. “I wanted to give others the support they need without the restrictions of having to hire employees. I know what it's like starting a business, and if you don't have someone there helping you, giving you advice, or someone to bounce ideas off of, it can be quite stressful. So, I wanted to be somebody that not only understood a client's business or what they needed, but I wanted to help them grow, evolve, and pivot if they needed to,” said Michelle. Her business model includes one person, either Michelle or someone she trains, which could be one of her 10-15 virtual assistants on her team, and they work to assist, support, take care of the details, or guide the client through their goals. This model provides the client with the personal service that they need. Michelle's services are focused entirely on digital operations, so she helps clients with different digital types of businesses or services, such as consulting or coaching, selling digital programs, and more. “I've worked completely online, so I know a lot about this kind of environment as well as the challenges that people face working online,” Michelle said. Digital Courses for Virtual Assistants, Freelancers, & Online Business Startups Michelle originally set up a free course to help others start their own online business. “It was what I basically did, from start to finish. It was how to put yourself online, start getting clients, working with clients, and getting recurring income,” she said. Initially, she wanted to offer her courses for free, but when she researched Yaro Starak's methods on his BlogMastermind program, she decided to trust him and take his advice, which has helped lead her to where she is today. She began with a blog and daily YouTube videos, and she received more than 500 subscribers in three months! Michelle contacted her email subscribers with an invitation to apply to be one of seven people who could receive her course for free. Thirty-five individuals filled out the application. She picked seven individuals to try the course for free. For those who weren't chosen, she offered the course for $1,000, and she was surprised at how many people purchased the course. That specific course, which was created in 2010, has evolved since then, and Michelle has since released several other courses. Her courses range from a small course for freelancers, 1nSourcing for those starting or growing their own business, workshops, help with marketing and coaching, and support for virtual assistants. Building Connections with Customers I asked Michelle if she could share some of her secrets and tips in building connections with customers. Here is what she suggested: Always over-deliver. We need to do what we say we're going to do, and then do a little bit more. Be honest. It is really important from the beginning that our courses, programs, and anything we offer are not just hyped up. Make sure that people are going to get what they pay for, what they see, and what they're looking to buy. Be there for customers. We need to give people avenues to us. It doesn't necessarily have to be to us as an individual, but it has to be something that we're responsible for, such as a customer support team, personal assistant, a community manager of a Facebook group, etc. People need someone they can rely on in order to get a response. Always do unexpected things for customers. Throw in unexpected things, specifically when it comes to customer support. For example, if a customer is struggling with something, and Michelle thinks she has a product that will help them, she will give her customer the product and say, “Go through this £47 product. If you feel it helps you and feel like paying for it, then go for it. If not, don't worry. It's yours.” Michelle likes to make sure that her customers feel very taken care of. It involves relationship building and a lot of listening. Using Social Media “Whenever a new social media platform came out, I would look at it as though it was going to change my business and make things easier for me to connect with more people,” Michelle said. Michelle was one of the first people on Twitter. She now has more than 50,000 followers. She loves the ease and quickness of getting her messages out there, and it's been one of the primary ways that she markets her business now. YouTube Videos Here are some tips that Michelle suggests when creating our own YouTube videos: Think about topics and become an expert on each. What do you want to work with? Draft out some topics. Know as much as you should as if a friend were going to ask you questions on the topic. Don't plan things out too much. Don't feel as though it's necessary to script things out. If so, we tend to come across as fake or false. It helps to create bullet points under each topic. Let things flow as though you're having lunch with those you're speaking with. Don't think: “Oh no! Millions of people are going to see this!” Michelle used to be very camera shy, but she knew what had to be done in creating YouTube videos. “Pretend the camera is your friend. I would look back at questions people sent me from emails, and then I would sit there and talk on video as if they had asked me that question,” Michelle said. Then she would pretend to sit in front of them, explain the answer back, and it became her best strategy. It doesn't matter how long the video should be. What matters is getting to the point where you've said all that you can say about the topic. Michelle doesn't like fluff, but she also doesn't like leaving out too many details. From a marketing perspective, she explained that shorter videos with more punch probably get the most followers and subscribers. People like quick takeaways because life is busy. “But, I think it depends on the topic and what you're talking about,” she said. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Michelle for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: It is possible to balance work and traveling by growing and monetizing a digital business. Be clear with why you must succeed, and then build everything from there. Understand that there is no such thing as failure. Don't give your courses away for free. Create value through products. Always over-deliver for customers. Do what you say you're going to do, and then do a little bit more. Be honest with customers and make sure that they get what they pay for. Always be available to customers in some way, whether that be through customer support, a Facebook group, a personal assistant, etc. Make sure that they always have a way to receive your help. When doing YouTube videos, become an expert on the topics you talk about. Don't plan things out too much, but come up with a list of bullet points and let things flow. Imagine talking to a friend and having a conversation with them. The length of each video depends on the topic, don't add fluff but provide enough detail. Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? The Business Generals Podcast | Helping You Maximize Your Entrepreneurial Dreams - Every Single Week
Michelle Dale is the founder of Virtual Miss Friday, an online business consultancy and academy with built-in virtual assistant services. She is also the creator of Insourcing, a service that helps 6 to 7 figure entrepreneurs to organize, monetize and cultivate their online businesses. Through the academy, she offers a range of training programmes and courses for virtual assistants and digital nomads. Michelle built her business while travelling through 6 countries and has expanded Virtual Miss Friday into multi-6 figure, multi-VA team supporting a global client base. Travelling the world Michelle has been on the road travelling globally since 2005. In 2005, Facebook and social media were not invented and there were very few people offering services online. She left the UK to travel the world and she thought to herself that there must be something she could do online to earn a living in such a way that she could keep travelling. Eventually, she discovered that she could provide VA services online which is what she did. Current base She is currently based in Greece, on the island of Crete, where she spends most of her time during the summer months after which she travels in the winter. She goes back to England on Christmas and then takes her kids off so they can travel for a few months after which they return during the summer. Corporate role She was in banking for a long time. She left school at 16, so she did any work she could do to make ends meet. At age 17, she landed a job in a bank and by the time she was leaving the UK at age 23, she was working as a para-planner and office manager in a mortgage and financial administration firm. Core revenue streams She makes money from services she provides to clients including consulting services, VA services, and online-oriented training courses. She also sells products, training programs and does a lot of coaching. She is currently trying to focus more on her programs and courses. She has a membership site as well, which generates income for her through membership fees. This is her primary income source. Starting out in business When she started out, her house in the UK was broken into and the thieves took everything except her passport. Michelle took that as a sign and so she decided to start travelling. She immediately quit her job, sold her house, booked a one way ticket and left. She then did some research online, came across virtual systems and started the business. She also contacted her friends to get people and resources that would enable her to test the services before she started getting paying clients. She then started taking paying clients for services like customer support, administrative support, and personal assistance. From there, she later branched out into website design, and when social media was created, she started offering social media marketing. Michelle didn't have any skills in website design but she self-taught herself HTML code and Dreamweaver so she could build her own site and it worked out so well that people started asking her to do websites for them. Identifying what to do She had a criterion of things that she absolutely had to have fit into her business and one was that it had to be a business she could do on the internet so she could work while travelling. She also wanted a business that wouldn't require her to commit to specific times. The criteria included many other things which she wanted in a business. She then researched online about working online and she came across many different online businesses including ecommerce. She had tried selling things on eBay but she wanted to use her skills in what she was doing, and enjoy it. That's how she settled on administrative and customer support, and personal assistance services. Knowing it would work She didn't know for sure but she had no other option but to make it work because it was all she had. Tip: You have to have enough pain or passion
