Mike Shapiro is the founder and CEO of TAPinto, a network of more than 85 online local news sites in New Jersey, New York and Florida. Shapiro launched TAPInto in 2008. Back then it was called TheAlternativePress.com and the goal was to build a network of hyperlocal news sites covering New Jersey towns. His core idea is relatively simple. Would-be editors and publishers are actually franchisees. They pay a fee to buy into a turnkey operation that gives them access to technology and marketing resources. Shapiro's team provides training and maintains the infrastructure, but these publishers are responsible for maintaining and growing their readership. Some have journalism backgrounds, but some join because they love their communities and want to become small business owners. There are now more than 90 franchises all over New Jersey, New York and Florida. The name was changed as the network grew: Shapiro no longer sees it as an alternative to just one newspaper, but as a way to TAPinto any community. Dan has a Quick Take on a new survey by the Medill school of journalism at Northwestern University that finds that readers in Chicago aren't willing to pay for local news, and Ellen nerds out on a recent NiemanLab report on the importance of local coverage of science.

We want to empower homeowners to build wealth through their homes. To help you achieve your personal financial dreams, we equip you with expert information and guidance—rooted in high-level data science, trusted sources, and independent research. All designed to give you the tools you need to boost your home value and maximize your equity potential. If you would like to learn how to Plunk your way to financial superstardom before our official app launch, sign up for our email newsletter, and get an early invitation to Plunk app access. Our Mission Statement may be quite ambitious, but it wasn't created overnight. The Plunk concept has been years in the making. As passionate homeowners and remodelers, Brian Lent and David Bluhm recognized the gap between the information that was available... versus what was needed by consumers. They then sought to create a way to help homeowners explore the possibilities of creating a dream home, navigate through remodeling projects, and analyze cost vs. value—real life, real-time ROI—by giving them access to better and smarter data. It's mind blowing how little transparency there currently is in the residential real estate market, considering that your home is your most valuable financial commitment. We're here to change that. County of Santa Clara Chief Privacy Officer, Mike Shapiro, discusses the importance of having dedicated privacy leadership in our cities. He offers insight on the strategic and operational value of a CPO and the importance of empowering all employees to become ‘privacy champions’.
If you’ve been working in local news over the past decade, chances are that your job hasn’t felt very secure. One study estimated that as many 1,800 local newspapers have shut down since 2004, and those that have survived have faced steep budget cuts and layoffs. Hedge funds have been purchasing newspapers, saddling them with debt, and bleeding them dry, while the Facebook/Google duopoly have diverted more and more local advertising toward their own services. Last year, Facebook launched a feature that would allow users to be shown more local news in their Newsfeed, but it recently admitted that one in three U.S. users lived in areas that didn’t produce enough local news for Facebook to curate. But not all local news operations have struggled. A New Jersey based media company called TAPinto has launched 81 local news sites and is still growing. While most of those sites are located in New Jersey, the company has recently branched out into Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Florida. I recently interviewed Mike Shapiro, TAPinto’s founder, and asked him about why his model seems to be working. We also discussed other failed local news projects and whether Facebook’s efforts to boost local news are actually working. To see my previous interview with Shapiro, go here: https://bit.ly/2Wdvhl4

The last decade hasn't been kind to local news. While the entire news industry has experienced hardship, local newspapers have been hit particularly hard. A recent article in the American Prospect detailed how newspaper chains have been bought up by private equity firms and then were systematically cut to the bone, the private equity firms wringing out every last cent of profit before closing the newspapers for good. Even tech companies have struggled to make local news profitable. AOL famously launched Patch, a network of hyperlocal news sites, only to sell it off a few years later. That's what makes Mike Shapiro's success so interesting. Shapiro was working as a lawyer when, in a bid to spend more time with his kids, he launched a news site for his New Jersey town. That site soon spawned two new sites, and then blossomed from there. The TAPInto network now boasts dozens of sites all across New Jersey. I recently interviewed Shapiro about how he has managed to find success in local news where so many other companies have failed.

Imagine starting a new professional sports team... from scratch. That's what my latest guest did. Mike Shapiro is the founding partner and current managing partner of the San Rafael Pacifics, an independent league professional baseball team in San Rafael, California. Many years ago, Mike had the idea for starting a professional baseball team to play at a local ballpark where his kids played baseball. Only unlike most people who come up with a crazy, hare-brained idea like that, he followed through. Mike shares how his new team ran into every barrier you can think of as they tried to get the new endeavor off the ground: raising the money to fund the initial startup costs (about $1 million) legal challenges - neighbors who filed a lawsuit to challenge required environmental impact reports prepared by the team a local community that had never heard of the new baseball team before the challenge of getting attention for an unknown, untested baseball team right in the backyard of the World Champion San Francisco Giants (who had won the World Series the year before the Pacifics began playing) Mike has a fascinating story to tell, and I think it illustrates the importance of nurturing strong relationships in business. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to start up a professional sports team, you're going to love this interview!
In this podcast interview, I speak with Mike Shapiro, the founder of a new professional sports team, the Pacifics baseball club in San Rafael, California. The Pacifics are like a minor league baseball club, only not affiliated with any Major League club. The post 035: Mike Shapiro | How to Start a New Professional Sports Team appeared first on Smart Business Revolution.
Aaaaand we're back! The Josh Logan (he insists on 'the') and a Mike Shapiro (he objects to the indefinite article) join Xander and Ben to review a fancy Californian IPA and discuss the intersection of microeconomic theory and cultural relativism...psych. They all talk nonsense. Eat it up while you can as there are only a few episodes left with damn fine Ozzie cohost Ben Russell (who has already returned to Australia from whence he came but we recorded several extra shows in advance). If you like huge heads on small bodies talking with an odd accent, listen up before it is too late.
