This episode is part ten in an ongoing series about brands and how they influence our identities and drive consumerism. In this episode, we are going to examine brands and their values: their true values and then their marketing values (yes, most big companies have both and you might be surprised by the lack of overlap between those two sets of values).  And specifically, we are going to use Everlane as a conduit for this discussion.  We will go all the way back to Everlane's origin to identify what the brand's values were from the beginning. We will get some additional context around SHEIN's purchase of Everlane. We will learn just how much private equity is controlling fashion at this point.Amanda will debunk that myth that Everlane's sale marks the “end” of sustainability in fashion. And we will explore how "Stickergate" involved emotional branding.Listen to Amanda on Creativity In The Time of Capitalism. Zac went viral after a hallway video of his daily high fives and fist bumps reached millions, but what's even more powerful is the culture behind it. We talk to Zac about how he's creating a school where students and staff want to be, not have to be. He shares how simple daily rituals like “Fist Bump Fridays” (every day), greeting at arrival and dismissal, quick classroom hellos, hallway presence, and cafeteria time, build trust, connection, and belonging. Zac also explains his “yellow light leadership” approach, how he organizes his day using green, yellow, and red zones, and why proactive visibility beats reactive follow up. He highlights a powerful ripple-effect story from a quick doorway interaction and a schoolwide win: 100% of students can name a trusted adult. His reminder? Jeannette is joined by Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling all the way from COP29 in Azerbaijan to discuss their journey from launching the Extreme Sports channel to evolving their business into a platform focused on adventure, sustainability, and community engagement. Alistair shares insights on the entrepreneurial spirit driving change in the environmental sector, while Amber highlights the importance of amplifying diverse voices at COP29. KEY TAKEAWAYS The current emphasis is on environmental sustainability, with a strong belief that everyone can contribute to positive change. The goal is to inspire a broad audience to take action, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the need for "8 billion imperfect environmentalists." At COP29, the primary focus is on finance and the need for substantial investment in sustainability initiatives. The discussions aim to encourage governments to make impactful decisions that will shape the future of environmental efforts. There is a growing trend of entrepreneurs and innovative companies stepping up to address environmental challenges. Examples include sustainable brands gaining traction and initiatives like the Earthshot Prize recognising impactful organisations. We should encourage individuals and organisations to embrace bravery, boldness, and brilliance in their efforts to create a sustainable future, while also recognising the need for balance in addressing both climate and technological advancements. BEST MOMENTS "We inspired a good few million people around the world to go and get active, drive health, fitness, well-being through getting into adventure and extreme sports." "We need 8 billion imperfect environmentalists in the world today. We don't need a handful of perfect ones." "What I'm loving seeing is the entrepreneurial spirit shining through where entrepreneurs are taking advantage and really drilling into opportunities to change the dial." "It's very clear. It's finance. It's all about finance this year... we can only hope that our governments come together and make the right decisions around that."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. He shares his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the performances and the significance of certain songs, including "The MoMA Dance" and "NICU," which have deep ties to Phish's history and fan culture. Larry provides a detailed history of Phish festivals, from the Clifford Ball in 1996 to the most recent Mondegreen Festival, noting memorable moments, attendance figures, and unique aspects of each event. The episode also includes a brief discussion on the 60th anniversary of The Beatles' performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado. Trey added a harmony to it on his electric guitar, and the “Hydrogen” we have come to know was born. Initially intended for Tom, Marc, and Trey's band Bivouac, “Hydrogen” ended up in the Phish lineup and made its debut, all alone, on 4/6/85.  After a few years, it became the connector between Mike's Song and Weekapaug Groove. Into Weekapaug GrooveBy:  Anastasio/Fishman/McConnell/GordonPlayed: 523 timesFirst: 7.23.1988 at Pete's Phabulous Phish Phest in Underhill, VTMost Recent:  August 17, 2024 (Mondegreen Night 3)Gap: 1 show “Weekapaug Groove” takes its name from the town of Weekapaug, located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in southwestern Rhode Island. According to Mike, the song's lyrics (“Trying to make a woman that you move, sharing in a Weekapaug Groove”) are meaningless. As Mike said in a 9/9/97 interview with Parke Puterbaugh: “So we came back to Boston [from Weekapaug, after playing a gig there at a yacht club], and I guess we were in the van or the Voyager we used to drive in, and that song “Oh What a Night” came on the radio. You know that one? That awful Four Seasons song? We just constantly listened to songs and changed around the words as to what they might sound like. I always had a particularly hard time hearing lyrics anyway, so I always would sing a song on the radio, sing along with the wrong words. So the bridge of that song goes ‘Oh I-I-I trying to something,' but I was singing it, ‘Oh I-I-I trying to make a woman that you move,' which means nothing, 'sharing in a Weekapaug groove.' So we all just started singing that, as complete nonsense: ‘trying to make a woman that you move.' It never occurred to any of us that it had any meaning, ever. There was a period of time that we were singing it, and I used to just yell out the lyrics, between singing them I would just yell them out as if I was preaching them, just to sort of make it more ironic that they have no meaning.”  SHOW No. 3:                    Yamar                                                Night 4, August 18, 2024 – First set 10th song out of Stash and into Timber                                                August 17, 1996, Clifford Ball, Plattsburgh AFB, Plattsburgh, NY (1st Phish Festival) into It's Ice                                                Phish-Ya Mar-Clifford Ball (youtube.com)                                                0:13 – 1:45 By:  Cyril Ferguson                27th November 1951 - Cyril 'Dry Bread' Ferguson was born in Nassau, New Providence, Bahama Islands.Ferguson was a Bahamian musician and entertainer. It represents one of Phish's few forays into calypso and is among the most playful and danceable songs in the band's repertoire. And anytime Trey screams for Page to take the reins – “Play it, Leoooooo!” – the crowd is apt to go wild. Page's nickname actually comes from this line in the original, where The Mustangs urged their own piano man to step into the spotlight. The title seems to reference the slurred interpretation of “your ma,” as the singer recounts the disdain his lover's family has for him. Phish put their own unique stamp on it by often changing the “no good pa” lyric in the chorus to mimic their own “oh kee pa” phrase.  Played: 232 timesFirst: 2.21.1987 at Slade Hall, UV, Burlington, VTMost Recent:  8.18.2024Gap: 0 shows Marijuana News Senator Says Harris Will ‘Be Ready To Sign' Marijuana Reform Bills If Elected PresidentGOP Senators Claim Marijuana Is A ‘Gateway Drug' As They Oppose Rescheduling And Legalization3.      People Who Use Marijuana Are Less Likely To Be Obese, New Study Shows                 SHOW No. 4:                    Simple                                                Night 4, August 18, 2024 – First set second to last song of Izabella and into Golden Age                                                July 27, 2024, Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI second set out of Sigma Oasis and into The Howling                                                Phish - 7/27/2024 - Simple (4K HDR) (youtube.com)                                                0:18 – 1:28 By:         GordonPlayed:  209 timesFirst:     5.27.1994 at the Warfield Theater in San FranciscoMost Recent:  August 18, 2024 (Mondegreen Night 4)Gap: 0 shows "Simple" was first written and recorded by Mike Gordon in a four-track medium in the Doo-wop style and introduced to the band during the studio sessions forHoist. This version reflected the country and bluegrass writing style of many previous Gordon compositions. The song was left off of the albumand the band showed hesitation in performing it live. Then, on 5/27/94, “Simple” debuted in a very strange and raw fashion during the “Mike's Song” at the Warfield in San Francisco. In contrast to the song we know today, the debut version of “Simple” was Mike's original lyrics sung by the band members over a jam that had emerged from “Mike's.” Three weeks later, “Simple” was played for a second time at the historic 6/17/94 gig, the same night that much of the country was watching the low-speed police chase of O.J. Simpson's white Ford Bronco through L.A. This version was significantly reworked and sounded much like the “Simple” we are accustomed to hearing today, with the exception of a minor humoristic augmentation providing the line “We've got O.J., cause we've got a band.” Mondegreen:  We've got a cymbal (simple) cause we've got a band   OUTRO:                               Twee Pri                                                Night 3, August 17, 2024 – Encore out of YEM into end of show                                                April 20, 2024, The Sphere, Las Vegas, NV Encore out of A Life Beyond the Dream into end of show                                                Tvidler 202202 11 by Ryan Maguire (youtube.com)                                                0:00 – end By:  Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnellPlayed:  321 tiesFirst:  2.1.1991 at Alumnae Hall, Brown University — Providence, RIMost Recent: 8.17.2024 Mondegreen Night 3Gap: 1 show A "reprise" is a sort of musical afterthought – basically a reintroduction of and variation on the main theme of a piece of music. Thus, “Tweezer Reprise” is a slight variation – a condensation of sorts – of “Tweezer.” As it does on the album A Picture of Nectar, the “Reprise” often follows “Tweezer” in concert, most frequently as an encore song. It is also common as a second set closer following an earlier “Tweezer.” A few times, the “Reprise” has even been spewed out of some long, monster “Tweezer,” serving as the thrilling exclamation point at the end of a raging, set-long sentence (e.g. 5/7/94, 6/22/95).On occasion, “Tweezer Reprise” has shown up as a surprise in a show where there has been no performance of “Tweezer” proper. Although usually this occurs because the “Reprise” will be referring back to a non-reprised “Tweezer” at the previous night's show (e.g. 12/30/96's “Tweezer” was reprised on 12/31/96), the song has been known to appear, albeit rarely, completely free from its Granddaddy counterpart, like on 9/29/99. The most interesting example of this, and perhaps the most unusual “Tweezer Reprise” ever performed, was on 12/8/99, which featured an a cappella version that came out of a “YEM” vocal jam to close the second set. The band later finished off the show with a traditional “Tweezer Reprise” to end the encore. Other interesting versions include 10/27/94 and 10/21/95. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Just when you thought you were out, The Daily Poem pulls you back in–to poems about movies. Today's charming and earnest poem imitates the medium it describes (film) by swapping memorable images and sensations for linear propositions. Happy reading.Amy Clampitt was born and raised in New Providence, Iowa. She studied first at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and later at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research in New York City. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Clampitt held various jobs at publishers and organizations such as Oxford University Press and the Audubon Society. In the 1960s, she turned her attention to poetry. In 1974 she published a small volume of poetry titled Multitudes, Multitudes; thereafter her work appeared frequently in the New Yorker. Upon the publication of her book of poems The Kingfisher in 1983, she became one of the most highly regarded poets in America. Her other collections include A Silence Opens (1994), Westward (1990), What the Light Was Like (1985), and Archaic Figure (1987). Clampitt received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Academy of American Poets. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Clampitt taught at the College of William and Mary, Amherst College, and Smith College.Joseph Parisi, a Chicago Tribune Book World reviewer, called the poet's sudden success after the publication of The Kingfisher “one of the most stunning debuts in recent memory.” Parisi continued, “throughout this bountiful book, her wit, sensibility and stylish wordplay seldom disappoint.” In one of the first articles to appear after The Kingfisher's debut, New York Review of Books critic Helen Vendler wrote that “Amy Clampitt writes a beautiful, taxing poetry. In it, thinking uncoils and coils again, embodying its perpetua argument with itself.” Georgia Review contributor Peter Stitt also felt that “The Kingfisher is … in many ways an almost dazzling performance.” In the Observer, Peter Porter described Clampitt as “a virtuoso of the here and the palpable.” Porter ranked her with the likes of Emily Dickinson and Elizabeth Bishop.Critics praised the allusive richness and syntactical sophistication of Clampitt's verse. Her poetry is characterized by a “baroque profusion, the romance of the adjective, labyrinthine syntax, a festival lexicon,” said New York Times Book Review contributor Alfred Corn in an article about Clampitt's second important collection, What the Light Was Like (1985). Indeed, the poet's use of vocabulary and syntax is elaborate. “When you read Amy Clampitt,” suggests Richard Tillinghast in the New York Times Book Review, “have a dictionary or two at your elbow.” The poet has, Tillinghast continues, a “virtuoso command of vocabulary, [a] gift for playing the English language like a musical instrument and [a] startling and delightful ability to create metaphor.” Her ability as a poet quickly gained Clampitt recognition as “the most refreshing new American poet to appear in many years,” according to one Times Literary Supplement reviewer.Clampitt's work is also characterized by erudite allusions, for which she provides detailed footnotes. Times Literary Supplement critic Lachlan Mackinnon compared her “finical accuracy of description and the provision of copious notes at the end of a volume,” to a similar tendency in the work of Marianne Moore. “She is as ‘literary' and allusive as Eliot and Pound, as filled with grubby realia as William Carlos Williams, as ornamented as Wallace Stevens and as descriptive as Marianne Moore,” observed Corn. Washington Post reviewer Joel Conarroe added Walt Whitman and Hart Crane to this list of comparable poets: “Like Whitman, she is attracted to proliferating lists as well as to ‘the old thought of likenesses,'” wrote Conarroe. “And as in Crane her compressed images create multiple resonances of sound and sense.”What the Light Was Like centers around images of light and darkness. This book is “more chastely restrained than The Kingfisher,” according to Times Literary Supplement contributor Neil Corcoran. Conarroe believed that the poet's “own imagery throughout [the book] is sensuous (even lush) and specific—in short, Keatsian.” Corn similarly commented that “there are stirring moments in each poem, and an authentic sense of Keats' psychology.” He opined, however, that “her sequence [‘Voyages: A Homage to John Keats‘] isn't effective throughout, the reason no doubt being that her high-lyric mode” does not suit narrative as well as a plainer style would.Clampitt's Archaic Figure (1987) maintains her “idiosyncratic style,” as William Logan called it in the Chicago Tribune. New York Times Book Review contributor Mark Rudman noted the poet's “spontaneity and humor; she is quick to react, hasty, impulsive, responsive to place—and to space.” In the London Sunday Times, David Profumo further praised Archaic Figure. Taking the example of the poem “Hippocrene,” the critic asserted that this work “demonstrates her new powers of economy, the sureness of her rhythmic touch and the sheer readability of her magnificent narrative skills.” “Amy Clampitt,” concluded Logan, “has become one of our poetry's necessary imaginations.”Clampitt died in Lenox, Massachusetts in 1994. God doesn't call everyone to the same field. He doesn't call everyone to be preachers. We as Christians must be ready and willing to work for God. A hedge. Have you ever seen a hedge? A hedge blocks off something or surrounds something. A hedge that has a gap in it is no longer secure. God is looking for Christians to stand in the gap. Will He find someone to stand in the gap at New Providence? We have the privilege to be in mourning with the brethren. If you are willing and obedient then we will eat really well. Do you know of anyone that's in need? The devil can't do anything with prayer. He can't get through it or around it. We have some in our own church that has laid their cross down. The rest of us present within the church should be willing and able to pray for those that are in great need. If you see someone down in the ditch, get in the ditch with them and help them get out of it. Examples of Heavenly people. Jesus is one that has stood in the gap for everyone that accepts His salvation. The Holy Spirit once one is saved, comes into their soul and sets up an abode. God didn't ask for a number to stand. He just someone to do it. God doesn't look for the qualified. He tells us not to worry about how much money we have, He's just looking for someone willing. If you have someone in your life that has forsaken the assembly of the church, backslid on God, stand in their gap. Get into your prayer closet and call out to God on their behalf. God didn't save you to do it alone. He didn't save you and set you out by yourself. If you're saved then you are amongst many.

The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe a pirate legend from the Golden Age of Piracy, Blackbeard. Whilst we usually cover aliens, Kev stages an intervention in this episode to try to turn Granville's souring, skeptical mood by regaling Mr Moonwalker with an actual true tale. A pirates life, if you will? Blackbeard, may have started his life as Edward Thatch before that surname was misspelt as Teach in a Newspaper, later becoming the most popular spelling of this pirates allegedly true name. Blackbeard, is believed to have begun his venture towards the pirate haven of Nassau, New Providence in the Bahamas with Benjamin Hornigold, forming the Pirates Republic before Gentleman Pirate Steve Bonnet, whom Moonwalker suspects he may be related to, landed in the lap of Blackbeard. We cover the pirate life of Blackbeard in detail as Blackbeard sets out to become legend. What were Blackbeard's most daring deeds? Did Blackbeard stick matches in his hair and if so, did his head burn? We also debate pirate names, which by the way are difficult to come up with ‘on the spot' - is Probe McButt-Smash even a pirates name? What about Captain Prick? Anyway… Was Blackbeard as fearsome as the legends make out? Were Blackbeard and/or his crew carrying sexually transmitted diseases and would this inspire Blackbeard to commit his most notorious and dastardly act? Do we even get to Teach's, or Blackbeards Hole today? All that and more on this week's file.     Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/butitwasaliens   Store: https://butitwasaliens.co.uk/shop/     Probe us: Email: butitwasaliens@gmail.com Instagram @ ButItWasAliensPodcast Twitter @ ButItWasAliens Facebook: @ ButItWasAliens - join Extraterrestrial Towers     Music:  Music created via Garageband. Additional music via: https://freepd.com - thank you most kindly good people. Kev's favourite modern game is Sea Of Thieves (is BOTW modern?) so of course we also had to include some music from this wonderful, joyous game. Thank you Rare - Kev considers becoming a year one Pirate Legend among his greatest achievements in life. The themes we used included ‘Maiden Voyage' and ‘Shipwrecks' - this music is courtesy of Microsoft and they will probably make us take this down but we really wanted to include some pirate easter eggs and bring some attention to this amazing game at the same time. Special mention to Robin Beanland whom composed the game music and whom also had a hand in Donkey Kong Country and Conker's Bad Fur Day back in the day; another two games around Kev's personal top 10. “I, am, the Great Mighty Poo…” Of course, we had to include the theme tune to Pirates of the Caribbean too, entitled ‘He's a Pirate' which was composed in 2003 by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer for Disney. Again, if Microsoft don't have our butts and make us remove this, Disney certainly will but it simply felt wrong to do an episode on pirates without the famous pirate theme. Learn more about your ad choices. Bill Epperly is a spiritual director living in Chicago and a longtime friend of Contemplative Light.   His website is integralawakenings.com In his own words: "My story begins in New Providence, NJ, where I grew up a member of the Methodist Church. My Christian roots run deep, but from an early age, I was troubled by the idea that Christianity is the only true religion. By age 12, I was an agnostic and might have stayed one were it not for a reintroduction to spirituality in 1985 through participation in a 12 step group. Then,  in 1987, I had a spontaneous and powerful “peak experience” of oneness with everything while attending a talk by Br David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk. In that moment of illumination, my story took an unexpected turn. I lost interest in my graduate studies and became a spiritual seeker. I began formal study of the Christian contemplative tradition and took up contemplative prayer. My interest in world religions grew strong and I read up on the lively interreligious dialogue between Buddhist and Christian monastics. This led me to become curious about zen and  Zen Buddhism, which seemed the antithesis of theist Christianity. Encouraged by early experiences with Zen meditation, I decided to take up formal study of Zen, initially as a new Christian prayer form. My experiences of God and community life were so positive that I undertook three years of residential training at Zen Buddhist Temples in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Chicago. I left that community in 1993, but elements of that time of practice and community living continue to inform and enrich me. During those years I was introduced to Ken Wilbers integral approach and I have worked to create an integral approach to spirituality that draws on Zen Buddhist, Christian Contemplative, and modern psychologically-based spiritual approaches.Clint Sabom is the Creative Director for Contemplative Light.  He also hosts The Sanity Sessions, a podcast about mental health and psychology.  Listen here.Support the show (https://contemplativelight.org/)

#33 David Salem - A Deep Dive into Capital Allocation   This interview is a true master class for anyone interested in capital allocation and manager selection. We had the great pleasure to speak to David Salem, the Co-Chairman of New Providence Asset Management, a firm that provides investment office solutions for endowments, foundations and family offices. David is also a contributor to Epsilon Theory, an online community in which he writes extremely thoughtful articles about investment management and combines it with his passion for the game of baseball.   Before assuming his current post, David served as a Managing Partner at Windhorse Capital Management, which merged with New Providence in 2018. For almost two decades before that, David served as the Founding President and CIO for the Investment Fund for Foundations (TIFF), a non-profit investment cooperative that managed over $8bn on behalf of more than 700 endowed charities by the time he left. We discuss many different topics during our conversation, which includes the Yale Model, which then became known as the Endowment Model and why David thinks it may be dangerous for institutions to try to replicate it. We also discuss David's framework for selecting money managers, what his due diligence process looks like and what he focuses on when meeting a money manager for the very first time.   The topics discussed include: 02:00 – David's background 06:00 – David's opinion what it takes to become a great investor 10:00 – The Endowment Model and why David thinks it may be dangerous for institutions to try to replicate it 16:00 – How does David thinks about diversification, as well as his thoughts on how to design an investment program 24:00 – David's thoughts on how one should account for human biases in the measurement of risk tolerance 33:00 – David's thoughts on Private Equity and crypto currencies 39:00 – David's personal process on how to select investment managers 43:00 – Characteristics David looks for (and seeks to avoid) in vetting money managers 49:00 – How does David prepare for a first meeting with a money manager, and what he spends the first meeting on 55:00 – What David thinks about the use of Investment Committee in making investment decisions 59:00 – How does David decide on how when to part ways with managers he has invested in 62:00 – David's thoughts on mentorship   Please keep in mind this is not investment advice.
