Happy Thanksgiving! We are celebrating with a program that is a little lighter than last year's offering. It's a Thanksgiving program from Edgar Bergen, 1945. Edgar Bergen was radio's ventriloquist, and his lead act was the puppet Charlie McCarthy. This was before ventriloquist dummies became the subject of horror movies. The guest in this show is 7-year-old Margaret O'Brien, and they do a very silly retelling of The Courtship of Miles Standish. Gather your kids and your parents. This one's a great one for just about everyone. Jack Webb encounters a modern-day Miles Standish and a turkey shoot more dangerous for man than bird in "The Pilgrim's Progress" from Jeff Regan, Investigator (originally aired on CBS on November 13, 1948). Bob Bailey stars in "Cause for Thanksgiving" from Let George Do It (originally aired on Mutual on November 20, 1950), and Steve Dunne stars as Sam Spade and helps save a Tom Turkey who walks on two legs in "The Terrified Turkey Caper" (originally aired on NBC on November 24, 1950).

“The Puritans feared that which was undomesticated.” — Jeff Hendricks“Our earliest American heroes were Morton's oppressors, Endicott, Bradford, Miles Standish. Merry Mount's been expunged from the official version because it's the story not of a virtuous utopia but of a utopia of candor. Yet it's Morton whose face should be carved in Mount Rushmore.” — Philip Roth “He held out the promise of America as an earthly paradise, a pagan, not a protestant prospect, a zone of pleasure, not salvation through suffering.” — John Seelye “Drink and be merry, merry, merry boys;Let all your delight be in the Hymens joys…Or make green garlands, bring bottles outAnd fill sweet nectar freely about.Uncover thy head and fear no harm; For here's good liquor to keep it warm. Then drink and be merry, Or yet, lasses in beaver coats come away, Yee hall be welcome to us night and day.To drink and be merry.” — Thomas Morton Today we are going to play with one of the greatest stories you probably have never heard of. Even in U.S. very little known about this story and it's a crime. If you have even a superficial knowledge of American history, you have almost certainly heard about the settlers who came to Plymouth in 1620. What you may not have heard about is that shortly thereafter a gentleman named Thomas Morton set up a different colony just down the road from Plymouth. At a time when most people arrived to Plymouth in chains, as indentured servants, Morton abolished servitude in his settlement he called Merrymount. At a time when his neighbors in Plymouth were brutally squashing religious dissent, Morton encouraged religious freedom. And on top of it all, he and his friends entertained extremely friendly relations with Native tribes even openly intermarrying. What makes the story even crazier is that Merrymount was well on its way to be more successful than Plymouth. When new settlers arrived on American shores, many took one look at ultra-strict Plymouth, another look at the freedom to be enjoyed at Merrymount and didn't need to be told twice which way to go. The only reason why Merrymount didn't make it in the history books you may have read is because the pilgrims turned to violence to destroy a community whose existence was a challenge to all of their beliefs. From that day forward, the name of Thomas Morton has largely been erased from history. Some people could refer to Morton as a victim of the Puritan brand of cancel culture. The Puritan story became mainstream, and Morton's name disappeared. This episode fixes this mistake. It is Thanksgiving this week here in the US where we take time to intentionally be grateful for what we've been given and count our blessings, but it is also the one time of year where the whole nation remembers an event that began during the life of William Shakespeare: the journey of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Not many people realize the story of William Shakespeare overlaps with that of the Pilgrims, due mostly to the fact that the Pilgrims wouldn't actually set sail from Plymouth until 1620, which is 4 years after the death of William Shakespeare. However, The Puritans were a major part of Shakespeare's life in England prior to that fateful day in 1620, including Puritans who lived within walking distance of the known residences Shakespeare took up in London. The story of the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and so-called “Strangers” that travelled with them including Miles Standish, William Brewster, and William Bradford, informs our understanding of Shakespeare's culture and the strong religious tensions that were building up in early 17th century England.. As many countries were flocking to the New World and trying to establish colonies there, England, too was placing a mark on the new land with settlements like Jamestown being established under Captain John Smith in 1607. At the same time, the Pilgrims were seeking to go to this New World, but for a decidedly different reason. As a group of religious separatists, as they were known then, they were seeking the right to freedom of religion. The group capitalized on the popular wave of exploration under James I to secure a land patent that allowed them to travel to England and set up a new colony where they could worship, and live, in freedom. Accompanied by the Merchant Adventurers and sanctioned by the Plymouth Colony, the Pilgrims set sail on September 6, 1620. Here today to tell us about the history behind the Pilgrim's journey from England to Plymouth and the realities of that First Thanksgiving are our guests and historians behind the 1620 Experience, David and Aaron Bradford.

The first fatal encounter between the Massachusetts Pilgrims and the native Massachusetts people, a counterweight to the story of the first Thanksgiving
A classic moment from American literature, when the Puritan maiden Priscilla says to John Alden "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" and thus seals forever America as a place of freedom for women, men, and love.
When you meet a new friend at a murder, you know you've made a friend for life--or death. Today's guest, Dave Milbrandt, and I met at an interactive murder mystery fundraiser and I immediately wanted to know more about his Jim Mitchell series. I reviewed the third in that series back then, but now... We can thank the pandemic for a fabulous book (endorsed by Thomas Locke, no less) that releases July 13, Fool's Luck! Guys, this BOOK! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to This Unique New Book Will Excite You about Politics Again Author of the Jim Mitchell series (my review of book three is HERE), Dave Milbrandt used his "shelter at home" time to write a book, and wow! What a book! When a guy wins the lottery, he doesn't buy a new car or house--doesn't go on trips or even invest it in the stock market. Nope. He announces his bid for the presidency... of the United States. Oh, and he wins that lottery on April Fool's Day, no less. If that's not a brilliant premise for a book, I don't know what is. Dave and I chatted about his writing process. For the record, Fool's Luck was written to the Poledark soundtrack for hours upon hours at a time. He also names characters after specific places and really loves to get into local flavor with his settings. Not only that, but even his dedication has significance to his life and writing. Dave Milbrandt teaches (or has taught) literature (he's one of those meanies who makes kids read F. Scott Fitzgerald), government, and related topics. He, like I, loves teens and is invigorated by interaction with them. We also discussed the differences and similarities of indie vs. traditional publishing and what Dave and I like and dislike about both. As Dave pointed out, if he hadn't gone traditional this time, he might not have the delightful endorsement he received from Thomas Locke. Obviously, we had a great talk! And we talked a lot! That happens when you get two people--erm, troublemakers--together and let them loose on a conversation. Note: I was wrong, Bradford did not name a son Miles after Miles Standish. I thought he had but… nope. Maybe it was a grandson... or maybe it was something I read in a book that was fictionalized. Who knows where I got the nutty idea, but hey. Dave has the real dudes in his family tree, so woot! About Dave Milbrandt's Fool's Luck "What an unexpected delight. The concept is fresh and original, the writing solid, the story - well, I'm still smiling." Thomas Locke, Bestselling Author When high school teacher Myles Bradford wins the Powerball lottery, he decides to do something truly unexpected: run for President of the United States. Bradford is eager about the opportunity, but his family clearly is not. With little time to sway them to his side, he's thrust into running a quarter-billion-dollar nationwide campaign, complete with cross-country flights and road trips, expert staff, and armed security. But like most dreams, Bradford soon finds that what he imagined is completely different from what is real. Thrust into the spotlight, he faces attacks from newfound political enemies and false accusations while striving to climb the ladder of success. As Bradford gets closer to achieving his dreams, danger lurks on the home front. As his attention is pulled farther away from the things that matter most, Bradford may learn that even success has its price. Will he be able to have it all? Or will his thirst for power come at a tremendous cost? You can find more of Dave Milbrandt and his works on his website, davemilbrandt.com Like to listen on the go? Family Theater was an dramatic anthology radio show which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the United States from February 13, 1947 to September 11, 1957. For Thanksgiving week I'll be reading The Courtship of Miles Standish, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's narrative poem about a love triangle among the Pilgrims. You wouldn't expect a love triangle among the Pilgrims, but when there's only one woman of marrying age in the colony, things happen. Because of the length of the work, you'll be getting nine (!) episodes this week. If you want to read along, you can follow using the version I'm reading from on the Longfellow website from the Maine Historical Society. Have a great week and enjoy your turkey!

This is the second interview with Michael "Miles" Standish, the Vice President of NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) and Dennis Berry on The Funky Brain Podcast. Great talk about Silver American Eagles, the precious metals market, rare coins and even some business and marketing techniques tossed in there. Miles is an incredibly successful, world renowned numismatic collectible coin expert. He has graded more coins than anybody in the world and was personally responsible for authenticating and grading almost all of the world's most valuable coins. NGC is the world's largest 3rd party coin grading service. It is one of the top 4 recognized grading services (NGC, PCGS, ICG, ANACS). Most people who live in our world of coins, especially the old timers, would argue that NGC and PCGS are the only top services. The reason is that they grade to much higher standards. Their certified coins tend to trade at much higher values as a result. For example, a Morgan Silver Dollar graded MS63 from ICG or ANACS might only grade MS60 from NGC or PCGS. PCGS stands for Professional Coin Grading Service. ICG stands for Independent Coin Graders ANACS stands for American Numismatic Association Certification Service Anyway, that is just a little coin education. NGC is the largest service and Miles has been instrumental in making it so. He is also the author of 2 Best Selling books: Morgan Dollar: America's Love Affair With a Legendary Coin and American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program Both are award winning coin books and everybody who collects coins has a copy in their home. In our talk here, Miles also offered some of his valuable marketing experience. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- You're listening to the Funky Brain Podcast with Dennis Berry Motivational Keynote Speaker | Life Coach | Business Coach | Corporate Leadership Training | Best Selling Author Website: www.DennisBerry.com Email: DennisBerry333@gmail.com Facebook: @funkybrain LinkedIn: @DennisBerry1
If “The Bacherlorette” existed in 1620 in New England, a young woman would not have many choices. Listen as the teenage Priscilla Mullens tries to choose between two Mayflower survivors pursuing her. We take a classic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The Courtship of Miles Standish,” and ruin it with reality TV.
You may be familiar with some of the more famous Plymouth Colony names like William Bradford, William Brewster, or Miles Standish; but few know much about Isaac Allerton - an enigmatic man who rose to prominence in Plymouth, Marblehead, New Haven, and New Netherlands between 1620 and 1659. In this episode, host Hilary Goodnow spoke with historians David Furlow and Lisa Pennington who are working to unravel the mystery of Isaac Allerton and his family across the 17th-century Atlantic World.
Joe can't find the nerve to ask Sarah to the dance, so he gets David to ask her for him. But David and Sarah really hit it off, and Joe feels betrayed. Wishbone, as John Alden in "The Courtship of Miles Standish" is asked by Captain Standish to court the orphaned Priscilla for him, with a similar result. Miles Standish is a technology lawyer at a global IT consulting company, and the owner and photographer behind a business called Photodrama. In this episode of Lawyer By Day I talk to Miles about how a long and varied legal career, education, photography, business, and even Melbourne's public transport system, can shape how we see things.
The Frog and the Sky Princess is a story from Angola in Africa, about a frog and a princess that involves the lead character successfully completing tasks to prove his worthiness to obtain a prize – in this case the hand of the princess in marriage. Yes, it's somewhat like the classic European tale The Frog Prince, though in this case there's no metamorphosis between species. But it's also curiously similar to an American legend. It was immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1858 narrative poem The Courtship of Miles Standish, in which military captain Miles Standish wants to court the lady Priscilla, but is a bit too shy, so he sends his friend John Alden with messages on his behalf. Priscilla is indeed won over, but it is Alden she falls for and not Standish. The characters in the story were real people – John Alden did marry Priscilla, and Miles Standish has a state park named after him in Massachusetts (we've camped there); and Longfellow claimed the story was true. But most likely it was just a folk tradition that somehow became attached to actual people. We come to you from Greenville, South Carolina, where we're doing our annual Christmas tree sale to benefit our company. We hope things are really hopping for you, and you're having a hoppy holiday season. Happy Listening, Dennis (Kimana, Hawk, Sun King) and Kimberly (Narrator, Rabbit, Sky Princess, Frog)
