It's 1986 and the cereal is sugary, the TV knob is warm, and the Saturday morning cartoon wars are officially underway! Shua and Jay travel back to the golden age of animated chaos to decide which network truly ruled the weekend lineup. From Muppet Babies and Real Ghostbusters to Schoolhouse Rock and Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling, the guys relive the cartoons, commercials, trivia, and unforgettable memories that made Saturday mornings legendary. Plus, Jay quizzes Shua on Schoolhouse Rock in a battle for educational cartoon supremacy. News Atari has officially acquired the legendary RPG franchise Wizardry, bringing the classic BASIC-coded dungeon crawler under the company's retro gaming banner. Nintendo surprised fans with a special "Star Fox Direct" presentation that officially confirmed a brand-new Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch 2. Top Gun fans can celebrate the film's 40th anniversary with collectible Maverick and Goose helmet popcorn buckets available during opening showings. Star Tours: Last Launch is an impressive fan-made film packed with love for Disney Parks and Star Wars, including appearances from several franchise legends. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay checked out Daredevil: Born Again along with Punisher: One More Kill on Disney+, and found the new season to be a major improvement with smoother storytelling and stronger pacing. The gritty tone was intense and the Punisher special delivered exactly the kind of brutal action fans expect from Frank Castle. Shua sampled the new Firecracker Pop Oreos inspired by the classic red, white, and blue Rocket Pops, and somehow they actually taste remarkably close to the frozen treat. They're sugary, nostalgic, and absolutely worth trying at least once for the novelty alone. Sci-Fi Saturdays - This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay focuses on the 2020 time-loop comedy Palm Springs. He explains how the movie unexpectedly became the perfect film for audiences during the COVID lockdown era, with its themes of repetition, isolation, and emotional burnout resonating in a strangely timely way. He also praises the clever writing from Andy Siara and the direction from Max Barbakow for taking the familiar time-loop concept and making it feel fresh, funny, and surprisingly philosophical. The film balances absurd comedy with meaningful emotional depth, elevating it beyond a typical indie comedy. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. This week he's added some new locations from Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Saturdays in 1986! This week, Shua and Jay climb aboard the nostalgia rocket and head straight back to the glorious cartoon battleground of 1986 Saturday mornings. We explore the origins of Saturday morning cartoons from the earliest days of Crusader Rabbit all the way through the animation boom created by Hanna-Barbera and the toy-driven explosion of the 1980s. Then it's time to choose a channel as we break down the legendary 1986 lineups from ABC, CBS, and NBC featuring classics like The Real Ghostbusters, Muppet Babies, The Smurfs, Pound Puppies, Kidd Video, and more. Along the way they relive the cereal-fueled excitement of planning your morning around the TV schedule, revisit the magic of Schoolhouse Rock, and test cartoon knowledge with a hilarious trivia showdown. How did you do on the SHR quiz? What cereal goes well with Kissyfur? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "Unpack your adjectives" will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com
Babies. We all were 'em. Who needs 'em? That's what we're out to answer in this week's episode of Toonhounds. Not us apparently, get ready to be slightly upset with us for our inflammatory comments about Muppet Babies.

Roger Corman was born 100 years ago this month so to celebrate his centennial and 420, Greg and Bob pair pot with GAS-S-S-S (1970), Corman's hippy-dippy post-apocalyptic stoner comedy. It's definitely one of Roger's stoniest movies, if not quite his best. A doddering US senator unwittingly releases a bio-weapon that kills everyone over 25. With that premise, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper had aged out so we get Bud Cort (RIP), Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen (who is on fire in this), and Talia Shire (then billed as Tally Coppola). They're like the Muppet Babies of AIP druggie flicks. With dirty psychedelic rock by Country Joe (RIP) and the Fish--the second film on this podcast to feature them and their music. Barry "The Fish" Melton kicks ass. Bob also talks about seeing the 4K restoration of Micheal Mann's THEIF (1981) at the Roxie in SF with the sound cranked way up. It's a good thing. And Greg gives us an update on his record room + why do people watch podcasts with aging men sitting around in shorts? What's the appeal? Hell if we know. Hosts: Greg Franklin and Bob Calhoun. Philena Franklin and Cory Sklar are on assignment. NEXT EPISODE: Cory's Punk Rock and Shock Til You Drop with LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) and FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) featuring special guest star writer, producer and movie geek extraordinaire Marc Edward Heuck. And so we leave behind The Jim Henson Hour, a deeply personal project of Jim's and the culmination of a life's work (for better and worse), and turn now to The Ghost of Faffner Hall, a strange grotesquerie with dubious scholarly merit that Jim glanced at once maybe. And we're making Tough Pig's Anthony Strand come along with us! Strap in everyone, it's a long stretch of this and Muppet Babies for like half of this year! The Stupid History of Muppet BabiesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-stupid-history-minute--4965707/support.
If you can believe it, the Muppets are 70 years old this year. While once they were everywhere, known to children and grown-ups alike, today they've lost a lot of their cultural relevance. But is there a world where the Muppets can come back strong? That's what Kyle and Mikey discuss this week. From The Muppet Show to Sesame Street to Muppet Babies, we need the felt party to continue.
With a quiet stealth-like frequency, children's television programming is becoming more and more woke. So much so that conservative parents are becoming increasingly concerned. One doesn't have to look far to see that gender ideology has made inroads on shows like Muppet Babies which features a transgender character, or Blues Clues and You that has trumpeted an animated “Pride Parade” hosted by a drag queen. Even Sesame Street, considered to be the gold standard in children's television programming, has celebrated LGBTQ Pride Month for many years. Seeing this negative trend, Kirk Cameron has joined in partnership with Brave Books to create a new children's television series to counter some of these progressive concepts that are increasingly permeating the children's television programming landscape. Currently streaming on Great American Pure Flix, Iggy and Mr. Kirk is a live action/animated series that is designed for children and families. The program follows a curious iguana and his friend, Mr. Kirk, as they explore engaging yet profound life lessons that are grounded in Scripture. Each episode demonstrates faith-based values like kindness, courage and compassion all seen through the lens of effective storytelling, humor, and music. Think Veggie Tales meets Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. In addition to Cameron who plays the lead role of Mr. Kirk, the show also features Disney Channel alum Leigh-Allyn Baker and renowned American puppeteer John Kennedy.Cameron joins me to chat about the role entertainment plays in the values our children develop and observe through the media they consume. Listen as he encourages parents to be more intentional about kids having positive entertainment to choose from.

And today, he joins us in advance of his Rams Head Presents show at Maryland Hall on May 17th. We chat about the beginnings, his mentors, and the bouquet of forget-me-nots he promised to send me when I lost track of what I was thinking. Of course, we talked about his show on the 17th which will be an incredible, unscripted, "who the heck knows where this will go" kind of night! On a more serious note, we dove a bit into his own OCD and the need to increase awareness and treatment for mental illness while erasing the stigma! "Hey, I tell you what is. Big city, hmm? Live, work, huh? But not city only. Only peoples. Peoples is peoples. No is buildings. Is tomatoes, huh? Is peoples, is dancing, is music, is potatoes. So, peoples is peoples. Okay?" With his dream project THE DARK CRYSTAL taking so much of his time and energy, Jim Henson was content to slim down his role on the next Muppet project and allow his right hand man Frank Oz to take the helm in his first solo directing feature. THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN would be the last Muppet film that Henson would be involved with before his untimely passing a few years later, but the film's legacy would have a lasting impact on his company, especially in the form of the Muppet Babies, who'd get their own Saturday morning cartoon, inspired by a sequence from the film. And let's not forget the media circus that surrounded the wedding of the century! In this episode, we give all the details on how the film came to be, from its concept, multiple script changes, release and beyond! Want to support the show? Send us a textThank you for tuning in! On today's episode, Chris Morgan joins us once again to take a another deep dive into television shows of the 1990s, but this time our approach is completely different! I had the chance to pick Chris's brain for a bit about 90s TV shows by asking him a multitude of different questions ranging from- "which 90s TV show had the worst theme song?" to "which kid's game show of the '90s could compete with 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" Chris is not only passionate about '90s TV but he's also an expert on it with an insightful perspective. [School of Movies 2025] The second and third parts of the original Trilogy of Muppet movies made while Jim Henson was alive, voicing Kermit and taking a heavily active role in production. The former from 1981 is a jewel heist that brings the anarchic furry ones to England, populated by only polite people (a trope which causes the two of us endless amusement) and very much concerns itself with pushing puppetry magic tricks on the big screen to their limits. This one, directed by Jim was in the immense shadow of the original Muppet Movie. The latter, from 1984 brings them back to New York as college graduates who want to put on a big Broadway musical and run up against the gritty realities of real life (along with a cloyingly cute debut for The Muppet Babies. This more grounded take was directed by Frank Oz and for us it is a commissioned show by Dean R. On today's episode we're sharing Part 2 of our epic conversation with actor and musician Jason Schwartzman! We're talking about nostalgic record and prank stores, digging through our parents' basements and all the "Over the Hill" merch the Bayers' mom got for her 40th birthday. We also all workshop our Muppets impressions and talk about the evolution of Kermit The Frog from Muppet Babies to adulthood. Finally, in a rousing game of CHANGE.DORK, the trio debate the merits of vegan options at a prep school, moving all major holidays to Fridays and putting Animal on the cover of Modern Drummer Magazine.
