With his directorial debut, Gil Junger delivered an iconic romantic teen comedy with his adaptation of the controversial Shakespeare classic, “The Taming of the Shrew” that probably shouldn't have worked. In episode 337, join Luke Elliott & James Bailey as they react to the moment that audiences fell in love with Heath Ledger, explain the Julia Style poem's connection to the Kendrick/Drake feud, appreciate the screenwriting skill on display, talk about the Clueless inspiration, and finally cast their votes on which is ultimately better: the book or the play? Shakespeare's works are renowned around the world as some of the best ever written, so how should we feel about what just might be his worst play? In episode 336, join Luke Elliott & James Bailey as they try to find hidden meanings in the array of identity-swapping games being played by the characters, analyze a framing device that seems to go nowhere, unite in their hatred of the terrible Petruchio, and prepare for the modern retelling to come with “10 Things I Hate About You.” Full Video version available on YouTube https://bit.ly/3Xdjc1n Support the show on Patreon for bonus content (including the 1922 Nosferatu), merch, and the ability to vote on upcoming projects: https://www.patreon.com/inktofilm Get The Taming of the Shrew or any of the source novels at the Ink to Film Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/inktofilm Ink to Film's Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky (@inktofilm) Home Base: inktofilm.com Luke Elliott Recent publications: “Your Black Apron Meal Kit Has Arrived” in the Even Cozier Cosmic anthology https://bookshop.org/a/23566/9781630230975 “Beyond Heaven” in the Beyond the Vanishing Point anthology: https://a.co/d/cTwnwz7 Website: www.lukeelliottauthor.com Social Media Accounts: www.lukeelliottauthor.com/social James Bailey Twitter: https://twitter.com/Jame_Bail IG: https://www.instagram.com/jamebail/ Music:  Can't Take My Eyes Off You – Craymer, AIIVAWN: https://youtu.be/Rx4R8XDpMM0?si=O8QrJN1d5Eujg9Tx

Football Transfer Portal Starts at 1:00 Wwwwwwelcome! To one of the internet's college football podcasts. We can't wait to talk about Mick Cronin. The defensive front seven looks pretty set for next year, now just need a cornerback (which happened after recording). OL Lawrence Hattar transfers in from Ferris State, he will likely move to guard. Still need a tackle but most plug and play guys are off the board. Everyone is nervous about wide receiver, this is problematic because Chip Lindsey wants a balanced attack. They might have to overpay for a receiver at some point. Michigan is good at tight end (unless it's one that looks like a wide receiver). WE HAVE A LONG SNAPPER.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Men's Basketball vs UCLA Starts at 26:22 The win over UCLA is probably not going to look as good by the end of the year. Michigan had an 18 point lead, then was down by 5, then wins by 19 (something similar may have happened under Juwan Howard?). Tre Donaldson has not had to put the team on his back until now. Which Michigan team was the best shooting team? This team is up there. Nimari Burnett has finally found his place. Vlad Goldin with 36 points, and now he's a shooter! Michigan is currently favored in all but two of their remaining games. 3. Hot Takes and Men's Basketball vs Washington Starts at 54:28 Takes hotter than Mick Cronin when somebody did something wrong that's not him. Michigan's bigs get into foul trouble early but collectively pick up one foul in the 2nd half. It was a parade to the basket. Great Osobor is tough to cover for anyone who isn't Goldin. How worried should we be about free throw shooting? Michigan matched their missed two pointers with their offensive rebounds! Michigan's turnover rating on Kenpom is out of the deep blood red (it's still red, just not the worst red). They're the best offense in the country if they can just stop turning the ball over.  4. Hockey vs Notre Dame Starts at 1:19:09 The hope for this team at this point is just to make the tournament. This has been a very good defensive team, giving up three goals in 32 seconds is nearly impossible. Michigan doesn't have top-end talent and especially doesn't have back-end talent. The Big Ten is a tough conference, need to scrap for points where you can. Michigan State got really good really fast.  MUSIC: "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"—The Rolling Stones "Unforgettable"—French Montana "Giving Up"—Michigander “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra

Retrospective Vibes Starts at 1:00 The second funniest game of the season, and our lives. After three first quarter turnovers (plus a turnover on downs) it was about to become frustrating if Michigan lost. What was the low point of the season for you? 19 is a fun number for Bryce Underwood. The defensive performance against Alabama is encouraging for next year, which should be set. Still some work to do on offense. Michigan needs to do a better job at developing relationships with guys hitting the portal.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Offense vs Alabama Starts at 23:58 All things considered the offensive line performance was encouraging. Check Sarah Jessica off your bingo card for this podcast again. Jordan Marshall - Blake Corum comparisons are made. PFF said everyone had solid pass protection except Sprague, but Sprague had the best run blocking. Where does Frederick Moore fit on the depth chart that would make you comfortable? Ben Hall was okay, he was less patient than Marshall. Davis Warren tore his ACL, if he's back in time for Fall camp would he even be an option? Expect the beginning of next season to have Bryce run packages but not be fully deployed.  3. Hot Takes, Defense, Special Teams, and Game Theory vs Alabama Starts at 54:36 Takes hotter than your 15-2 Detroit Lions. Michigan sacked Jalen Milroe 11 times in the year 2024 (six in the Rose Bowl, five in this bowl). Michigan's ends got in the tackles' heads and the blitzes prevented Milroe from escaping up the middle. Credit Wink Martindale for understanding how to coach college kids mid-way through the season. Alabama's run game was relatively non-existent. Bring on analyst Don Brown. Aamir Hall had some Will Johnson-esque plays towards the end of the season. Zvada remains very good. Let's talk about the timeout at the end of the first half. Do you kick that field goal to go up 16-0 or try for a touchdown? Any deviation from 1950s football would've lost this game. 4. Basketball vs USC Starts at 1:34:30 This game was frustrating, sometimes they had it together, then lost it, then fixed it, then didn't. Let's play the game of "did they have more offensive rebounds or misses from two?". Danny Wolf had a superlative game (please don't go to the NFL). The fouling was a bit out of control but that went both ways. Can two teams just agree to fire the refs mid-game and play without them? There are too many Big Ten teams now, we don't want to know about USC. How far do we expect Michigan to go into the tournament now? UCLA forces a lot of turnovers which will be interesting against Michigan. Was there enough time between when we recorded this podcast and when it's finally coming out that Bill Belichick hadn't actually lost his job yet and Alabama hadn't hired a successor to Nick Saban? Yes! Does that make this podcast about what feels like the end of a coaching era kind of useless? You'll have to decide that for yourself.MUSIC: "Can't Get Enough of It" – SPRINTS Hosted on Acast.   It's the first day of burning man and already I'm doing it differently.  90 min massage / facial (not the semen kind) sauna - meditating - writing out hopeful manifestations of a new kind of BURN for me because the old way needs to be reduced to ashes.  I believe this is actually my 10th year....I went for the first time in 2011 - and BM blew my mind apart. I reoriented my North Star and the Man became my ultimate Siren - even though every time he smashed me into pieces and eat my heart like it was Pringles.  I became obsessed with bringing everyone - convinced that I was the only one who could be their Shepard through this place of wonder but a place that could definitely kill you.  I BROUGHT MY WHOLE FUCKING FAMILY - and probably around 70 friends if I really think about it. Every year it became more and more my role - it became more and more work - less and less fun and continually drained every single resource I had most signiifgantly financially but also the amount of partying I was doing and the subsequent damage I would do my body not just with physical injury (SO MANY) but mentally it took a toll so drastic that every Sept I would be set back for almost a month to really get my sleep and health and drug / alcohol use under control. ANYWAY THIS LITTLE EPISODE IS MY PRAYER - and my hope for this upcoming burning man -  I LOVE YOU MOM.  THANK YOU  RATE MY PODCAST PLEASE - it helps me move up the ITUNES RANK (only do it if you like me, duh) I just updated my wesbite yay! www.zoenightingale.com  If you want to donate to my patreon to help support the cost of my fancy new editor please do!  https://www.patreon.com/oralfixation Music: Can you feel it - Jackson 5 Without You - Caribou

0:00-23:00: Emily Nemens, author of the recently-released book The Cactus League, graces the hallowed air waves of the Lookout Landing podcast. Emily grew up in Seattle as a Mariners fan, but also a fan of baseball in general, which led to the publication of this book! As book tours are illegal right now, we try to replicate that through the power of podcasting. Our conversation starts with a general conversation about the book and the characters involved before delving into some of the process behind it. She also shares a story of her real life experiences at Spring Training, featuring none other than George Steinbrenner. 23:05-34:35: Was there any moment in particular that made Emily want to write a baseball book? What sort of memory association will come with releasing a book during a global pandemic? What was the hardest part of writing The Cactus League? 34:40-56:50: Emily reads an excerpt from the book, which details an on-the-field moment between a pitcher and catcher. We end our conversation by talking about, what else, the Mariners. Like several past guests, Emily has left Seattle and had to adjust her fandom to the eastern time zone. How has the Mariners being bad re-shaped her brain, and does she think it affected the book at all? MUSIC God never changes, my friend. He loves you as much today as He did Elijah the prophet. The God that knew how to take care of Elijah the prophet is going to reach into your life on every level … and provide for you … and work that miracle you need right now, this very day. If you'll learn to obey God as Elijah the prophet, God will reach nations through you, my friend. You may be a housewife. You may be a school student, a business man. You may be in the ministry. You may wonder, "How could God use me? How can God use me in my finite environment with my human incapabilities?" But, my friend, the Spirit of God knows no limits to the one that's yielded to Him. What kind of man was Elijah? He was a man like Jesus of Galilee who moved in the Spirit of God. MUSIC Can you move in the Spirit of God like Elijah did? The Bible says that, "Elijah the Tishbite, one of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab the King, the leader of the nation, 'As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there not shall be dew nor rain these years, Ahab, but according to my word.'" Elijah confessed that God was going to move in the situation. Elijah set the situation up for God. You know, the Bible tells us that, "Elijah was a man of like passions as we are." "He had the same humanistic drives," the book of James says. The same temptations. The same frustrations as you―as me―yet he prayed and it did not rain for three and a half years. He prayed again, and God brought rain to the Earth. There were probably a lot of fellows in Elijah's country on the other side of Jordan that could have done the same thing. However, Elijah had something different in his life. He spent time with God. He had told the leader of the nation, "As the LORD God of Israel, before whom I stand." You see, God's man, Elijah, stood before God daily. He had a place where he met with God. He had a place where he stood and listened to God, and where he communed and talked with God. He contacted God in the Spirit, and that's why he could move in the Spirit. Elijah knew that one of God's judgments on a wicked nation was that God would cut off rain. Elijah knew that King Ahab―the leader of the nation of Israel―had not been living godly. And Elijah knew that if he would just go confess God's Word, it would give God access to move on the Earth in that situation. If you'll confess God's Word today in your situation, God will move. God will invade your environment. Move in the Spirit. Obey God. Do as Elijah did. You see, Elijah simply set the situation up for God as he confessed and said, "Ahab, as the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years but according to my word." Elijah didn't assail to go, my friend. He went. He would do what God told him to. He was obedient to the Word of the Lord, and that's moving in the Spirit. It's when you and I are obedient to God's Word and leading. God leads you according to His will, my friend, and His will is His Word. One time I was praying in a room. I had been resting. I'd been preaching for days on the streets, and my body had been taxed. If you obey God and rest when God tells you to, you'll never hurt your body. I was resting at some facilities that a man and his wife had provided. I had a great desire, a great burning in my heart to pray for the then President of the United States -- President Nixon. I went into the room. I prayed, I don't believe longer than 15 minutes, and that great burning desire then left. It was as though the Spirit of God said, "I've answered your prayer. I'll let you reach the President, but indirectly through one of his right-hand men." Later that evening a fellow came to the place where I was staying, and he invited me to go somewhere. I didn't want to go, but I felt a strange impression to go. I felt the Spirit of God rolling inside of my being, that it had an answer for what I had prayed that afternoon. I went with that man, and that night God crossed my path with the wife of a man―a key political figure. That wife of that man prayed with me and received Messiah Jesus as her LORD. She repented of her sins. She had a new birth from above. She stayed up till about three in the morning reading her Bible, and later God touched their family, and that family has now had a ministry for years. That man was one of the leading figures―if not the key figure―in the Watergate case. You know, you never know who God will cross your path with today or tomorrow. You don't know what God's going to do through your life. You may be a younger person, an older person. You may be a person that God seemingly has left in a holding pattern. I want to tell you―if you'll open up to the Holy Spirit―the blessings of God will be aimed at you from every direction … if you'll just receive them. Yes, moving in the Spirit is being obedient to God's Word and leading. It's important to obey. The Bible tells us, "To obey is better than sacrifice." God may tell you “Put on a red sock on one foot and a green sock on the other, and go into the middle of the freeway and hold up a big Bible and preach.” (Or, down to the shopping mall and preach.) You may say, "That's stupid." Well, I imagine Elijah the prophet thought a lot of things God told him to do were stupid. They seemed foolish superficially, but Elijah had walked with God long enough that he knew the God of Israel―the God that had provided for him―would never ask him to do something for which there was not a reason. We don't have to understand the reason. All we have to do is obey. If God tells you to put a red sock on one foot and a green one on the other and to preach in the freeway, how do you know that some fool is not driving down the freeway cursing God, denying God's Son, and yet asking for a sign and saying, "God, if you'll put somebody in front of me with a red sock on one foot and a green sock on the other, then I'll receive Jesus." You don't know what God is doing in the lives of other people. One time God actually told me to preach on a freeway in Canada. I preached, and God reached a great crowd of people (as I remember there were TV crews filming an accident there). When I got back in the automobile, a preacher who was from another country said, "God's Spirit told me to do the same thing, and I disobeyed Him"? Do you know what? That was a sign to me from God, and I got blessed for doing that. God reached many people. Yes … Elijah wasn't invited to the king's palace, but he went anyway. My friend, God may send you a lot of places where you're not wanted. I remember one time that, in His divine providence, God allowed me to be arrested for preaching on the streets, and God gave me a great court trial. Before the court trial, nine people alone were saved in the jail, and I preached myself back out of the jail. I've learned that if can preach yourself in jail, you can preach yourself out of jail. It seemed foolish, but while I was in jail they put me in a room with four cement walls, a cement ceiling, and a cement floor. I said, "God, surely you wouldn't want me to preach here. Nobody can hear me?" But the Spirit of God said, "Preach," and so I preached. I started at Genesis, went to Revelation and back again, and the sound was miraculously multiplied and anointed of God, went under the steel door, through the administrative area where the secretaries and the officers were doing the bookwork, clear out into the lobby, and four college age students gave their lives to Christ out there. I want to tell you, you don't know what God's going to do. Nine were saved in the jail. Then the Lord Jesus won the court trial which was a big jury trial which extended for days. It opened up a door for street ministries all over, and gave street workers boldness in the Lord. My friend, obey God. Yes, Elijah, again, was not invited to the king's palace, and neither will you probably be invited to a lot of places. I want to tell you, the Spirit of God will send you if you'll obey, and if you don't, God will find somebody else to bless. You know, I've been to that place in Israel where Elijah went to see Ahab. He probably had some fears, some doubts at times in his life. Possibly before he went to see the leader that time. Condemnation from the enemy probably attacked his mind. Maybe depression tried to set in, but he knew how to resist it. Resist those things, brothers and sisters. You see, those are tools that the enemy uses to keep you from moving in the anointing because Satan is afraid of the anointing of God. The anointing breaks the yoke. It destroys the devil’s attacks. Messiah Jesus said, "You go in and bind the strong man, and then you can tear up his house." So, when depression or doubt hits you, just move on in. Bind the strong man, cast out his demons, and do what God has instructed YOU to do. The greatest place you can be is under the anointing. When I feel the attack of the enemy―or when I sense Satan doing things to try to confuse―I just simply pray, "God, show me a new way to reach seven new countries for Christ in the next six months just to make the Devil mad." Go on in. Get under the anointing. Will you move out in faith today instead of fear? Elijah was like Jesus―he obeyed God and the Spirit of God. He moved in the Spirit. Will you obey God?
