The final instalment of our Best of Roqe series for the summer of 2023, featuring an interview with the late Iranian-American star scientist, Dr. Firouz Naderi, who died in June of this year - creating a deep void and profound sadness across the Diaspora. He was the kid from Shiraz who ascended to the heights of the most American of institutions. Firouz Naderi was well known for his rise to the top-levels of NASA and his brilliant work in bringing humanity closer to Mars. But Dr Naderi was also increasingly speaking out about the world, politics, and policy in the United States and in Iran… and feeling the sting of those who disagreed with him as a consequence. Today, we replay a very special interview with Dr. Firouz Naderi - who joined Jian from Los Angeles for this conversation - about space, belonging and putting oneself out there with opinions and politics. He was candid, charming, elegant and eloquent in this interview. He will be missed.

Ellie Naderi has been a DSO executive for the last 15 years and currently is an advisor to multiple Private equity partners, vendor partners, and DSOs. Being born in Iran, the human rights violations that are occurring over there are weighing heavy on her heart. She explains we can “be their voice” by posting, using hashtags like #mainhsaamini #freeiran #iranrevolution, and tagging UN, UN human rights and Biden Administration. We also need to demand that Biden stop his seven billion dollar nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran which will only fuel their murderous, barbaric actions against their own people as well as fund Russia and terrorism in the region. Ellie started her career as a dental hygienist and brings a unique “bottom up” approach to the private equity world..In addition, Ellie explains how to setup a DSO for the highest valuation from a private equity perspective. In today's episode, we bring you a conversation with Amir Naderi, writer and director of THE RUNNER, one of the most revered figures of the Iranian New Wave, and Madjid Niroumand, who was 11 when he played the film's central role nearly 40 years ago. The two joined Film Forum's repertory artistic director Bruce Goldstein for a discussion following our opening night screening of a new restoration of THE RUNNER on October 28. Released in Iran in 1984, THE RUNNER wasn't seen in New York until 1991, when it premiered at Film Forum – and then virtually disappeared. The film, based on Naderi's own childhood, centers on a resourceful orphan making ends meet in Abadan, a southern city on the Persian Gulf. Considered the first masterpiece of post-revolutionary Iran, THE RUNNER has been compared to the great works of Italian neo-realism, like SHOESHINE and THE BICYCLE THIEF, and Truffaut's THE 400 BLOWS. The new restoration is now playing at Film Forum through Thursday, November 17. Special thanks to Amir Naderi, Madjid Niroumand, and Rialto Pictures for making this event possible. Oui, je me sens dévastée, déchirée.

When Neloo's Bahai and Muslim parents married in Iran decades ago, it didn't take long to them to realize that to raise children safely, they would need to come to America. Years later, their children embraced religious freedom to the max. The skill set needed to navigate passionate conversations around their religious diversity has become an asset to Neeloo, who, along with a friend, has created Peace, Unleashed. You Will Learn: Laughter brings people together and creates intimacy and is particularly powerful for managing conflict and reducing stress. Youth poet laureate Marjan Naderi hadn’t given much thought to poetry until middle school. It was at this critical juncture in her life that a teacher saw something in the precocious student, and encouraged a young Marjan to explore the arts — particularly, spoken word poetry. Her teacher’s inclination turned out to be correct, as Marjan soon developed a voracious appetite for the craft and began writing poems of her own.Notably, it was the work of spoken word artist Mohamed Tall that spoke to Marjan; she was intrigued by the way Tall could seemingly distill an entire life into only a few minutes. And on another level, Mohamed’s work spoke of life as a Muslim living in America — a theme which resonated deeply with Marjan. In a remarkably short span of time, Marjan's talent would take her from penning her first poem to performing in front of thousands on some of the world’s largest stages. She would go on to become the Washington D.C. Youth Poet Laureate, Poetry Slam Champion multiple times over, and earn a wealth of other awards for her outstanding poetic achievements. But for Marjan, the work was never about the accolades nor the attention; from the beginning, poetry was a tool which facilitated her own self-discovery, self-expression, and healing. She was able to channel her life’s trauma into her poetry, and in her performances, she magnifies the weight of her words through movement and body language.Marjan Naderi believes that everyone is an artist; some are just searching for the medium through which to best express themselves. For Marjan, spoken word poetry’s confluence of language, storytelling, and theatrical performance is the art form through which she can understand, explain, and empower — herself and others — even when words alone fail.----For full show noteshttps://www.baktashahadi.com/podcastConnect with Marjan NaderiWebsite: https://www.marjaanxpoetry.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marjaanxpoetry/?hl=huTwitter: https://twitter.com/marjanxpoetryResourcesPurchase Marjan Naderi's book of poetry: Bloodlinehttps://www.marjaanxpoetry.com/buy-bloodlineFollow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash AhadiDonate to the production of this podcast https://www.baktashahadi.com/supportFollow us on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/stories_of_transformation/Follow us on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/storiesoftransformationpodcast/CreditsProduced by: Joseph Gangemihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-gangemi-audio/Digital Marketing & Media by: Katherine Anhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-a-91081b56/Theme music by: Qais Essarwww.therabab.comArtwork by: Masheed Ahadihttps://www.LinkedIn.com/in/masheedEpisode Music Credits“Slumber” bu VisMajor”Quieting The Mind” by Philip Daniel Zach”For Mother” by Philip Daniel Zach (feat. Firouz joins Jian to discuss the latest Mars mission, the importance of space exploration, the “blessing and curse” of a dual national identity, speaking out about Trump and the regime in Iran, and the emotional toll of dealing with detractors in social media.
Dr. Leila Naderi is an award-winning entrepreneur, educator, researcher and consultant, who is passionate about leadership development, partnership development, and social impact. She is the founder of Global Leadership Academy, an entirely volunteer-run organization, and Yoga for Leadership, a developmental program that bridges yoga and mindfulness to enhance holistic well-being and maximize individual, team, and organizational performance. Dr. Naderi is the Director of Partnership Development and Adjunct Faculty at Alliant International University. She has over a decade of leadership and management experience in different sectors. She is the co-author (with leadership expert Dr. John J. Franey) of The Yogi Leader: Discovering the Seven Elements of Leading with Mind, Body, & Heart. The Yogi Leader is both a book and a developmental program (of workshops, retreats, and resources) that is about discovering who we are as people, and who we are as leaders. As an advanced Hatha/Sivananda yoga instructor, Dr. Naderi was fascinated with the concept of the relationship between yoga practice and leadership while doing her doctoral dissertation work in leadership. She noticed an incredible synergy and correlation between the two. Her doctoral study found that leaders who practice yoga regularly score higher on authentic leadership skill tests than leaders who either don’t practice yoga or rarely practice yoga. As she worked through the concepts of yoga and leadership with her friend and leadership development consultant, Dr. John Franey, she realized that the chakras of yoga (the spiritual energy centers that exist within particular areas of the human body) and various leadership approaches were in fact extremely synergistic. From this synergy emerged the concept of “The Seven Elements of Leadership,” each of which is perfectly aligned with a chakra of yoga practice. Each of the elements is a different skill that people need in order to lead effectively and authentically with mind, body, and heart in any aspect of life. The book follows the stories of seven different leaders, each with their own set of problems and issues to deal with in their leadership practice. Each of their stories focuses on a different Element of Leadership and is aligned to a particular chakra. Dr. Naderi’s innovative projects include “Yoga 4 Leadership” which she founded in 2014, for organizing and leading executive retreats and workshops, integrating the principles of yoga and meditation into leadership training, with the goal of developing inspired leaders and creating a culture that fosters productivity, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and well-being. She founded the Global Leadership Academy in 2016 as a volunteer-run organization that serves the community and provides leadership training seminars. She states that her inspiration for creating this organization came when she became familiar with volunteer-run ecosystem of ServiceSpace (of which these Awakin Calls are a part). The goal of the Global Leadership Academy is to develop conscious leaders who act beyond profit to serve people and planet; bridge the gap between the leaders of today and tomorrow; build diverse and inclusive communities; encourage entrepreneurial activities; and connect scholars and practitioners. Leila was the recipient of Special Congressional Recognition by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 for her outstanding community service. In 2019 she was recognized as Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership at Alliant International University, and also received the North San Diego Business Chamber’s Leadership Award for positively impacting the community. Born in Tehran, Iran, she now lives in San Diego, California. She obtained her PhD from the California School of Management and Leadership.
This week’s poem is by Partaw Naderi from Afghanistan. The poem is read first in English translation by Sarah Maguire and then in Dari by Partaw Naderi. Partaw Naderi studied science at Kabul University and was imprisoned in the notorious Pul-e-Charki prison by the Soviet-backed regime for three years in the 1970s shortly after he’d begun to write poetry. He is now widely regarded as one of the leading modernist poets in Afghanistan, the lyrical intensity of his work coupled with his bold use of free verse distinguishing him as a highly original and important poet. Young up and coming Wollongong born DJ and Producer Emmett Walsh better known by ‘SCREMMETT' began his musical journey just under a year ago with his appearance in the NSW ‘Your Shot' competition at ‘Home the Venue' Sydney in Winter 2019. After the competition he had developed his DJ skills and began to get gigs at places such as Heyday and Fever nightclubs in Wollongong supporting notable artists such as Hotcaller, WA-FU and Naderi. He then began to take music a little more seriously and started to learn how to produce. Around November last year he released a first debut single “Money” on all platforms. The bass house track clocked a small amount of streams and made it to #52 on the Triple J Unearthed Top 100 charts at the time. With so much occuring in his short time in the music scene SCREMMETT has continued to take on many shows such as supporting LUUDE at his Wollongong concert at Waves. However he has also been working hard in the studio on new songs and remixes which he hopes to bring to you soon. Keep an eye on what's to come from SCREMMETT. [Editor's note: the following antagonization of David Roth involves fictitious statements by David Cooper.] David ropes in fellow comedian Matt Naderi, as the stand in guest for the episode. Naderi is Maz Jobrani lite and sounds pretty laid back. After a brief call from his (apparently crazy) roomie, he goes on to talk about his Dad, who moved to the country before the Iranian Revolution. David Roth (of Courtyard by Marriott fame) is our next caller, and he doesn't exactly mince his words when it comes to what he thinks about the show. After some pushing and prodding, Cooper admits that he's had some beef with Roth and makes an effort to come clean. Jamie Bond, all set to leave on his next mission to the Korean Peninsula, interrupts the call. I can't help imagining what new shit he's going to stir up - we should get a progress report this time, next week. For all you know, the South Koreans might fly him to Singapore for some fruity comic relief while the two overweight men meet, Trump and Tony. Straight shooter and WebEx hater Miranda then calls in to put Cooper in his place, followed by Roth who rings back to clear the air. After Roth hangs up, Naderi shares some of his experiences living abroad. Cooper brings the curtain down for the week, but not before a few plugs for shows both the men have coming up. That's me, Sam in the Far East rating this episode with 4 stars - that went pretty sour free, I think.
