From the invention of the internet to the emergence of the metaverse. How does she stay on top of a rapidly changing industry? Looking back on her career, what has surprised her about where technology has gone? After a lifetime of being the main tech reporter, what's next for her? What does she have planned for Sway? We've all heard the expression, usually in derision, “that New York media.” It implies a mean-spirited group of journalists trying to get an inside scoop in the crowded world of New York sports. While some of the public impression may be true, most of it is merely a factor of the sheer numbers of media covering the multiple sporting events in the largest city in America. Erik Boland has been covering the New York Yankees for more than a dozen years, and he's experienced it from the inside. He joins us to talk about the fact and fiction of his profession in “the city that never sleeps.”

Vox Media has been on something of a shopping spree over the past two years. After acquiring Epic to boost its TV production business, New York Media to expand its publishing portfolio and Coral to add to its publishing technology, in April the media company picked up Cafe Studios — the podcast company co-founded by former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara — to round out its podcast network. However, for both Vox Media and Cafe Studios, the motivation behind the deal extends beyond the world of audio. “There's lots of things we're thinking about and planning on, not just continuing additional audio podcasts [including narrative series] in the future,” said Bharara, who was joined by Vox Media Studios president Marty Moe, in the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. The companies are also looking to extend Cafe Studios into documentary television and live events. Meanwhile, Cafe Studios moves its new parent company further into the subscription business. Vox Media already sells subscriptions via New York Magazine and dabbles in donations via its news publication Vox. But Cafe Studios, which sells subscriptions through its Cafe Insider program, introduces it into the world of subscription-based podcasting. “One of the attractive things about Cafe is learning from [Cafe Insider] and learning how we can potentially extend that to more of our podcasting business, but frankly how we can connect it to and use learnings for other parts of our subscription business,” said Moe.
Kara Swisher is a no-nonsense journalist with a reputation as both the most feared and the most respected journalist to cover Silicon Valley. When she interviews the biggest names in tech, including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla’s Elon Musk, they’re usually visually nervous and on their toes. She's been covering the industry since the early 90s and knew many giants in the tech world when they were just starting up. Kara is widely connected, well-read and always prepared for an interview. She knows just how to get what she wants out of her guests, and has never suffered from imposter syndrome. Kara Swisher, a journalist and author writing about information technology, will discuss her observations regarding the internet, the digital revolution it created and the possible future it may bring. Topics will include: the influence of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms on our politics, especially on the January 6 attack of the U.S. Capitol; the effect of computer robotics on our economy; the development of artificial intelligence; facial recognition and other means of surveillance; the lack of gender diversity in the dot.com world, among other areas of public concern. Swisher is an opinion writer for the New York Times where she also produces a twice-weekly podcast “Sway” on tech issues; she is an editor-at-large at New York Media, co-hosts the popular “Pivot” podcast and has authored two books. Her examination of the tech industry led Newsweek to call her “Silicon Valley’s most feared journalist.” She has established a reputation in the tech world for unrivaled access, having interviewed Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Rupert Murdoch, Stacey Abrams, and Kim Kardashian, to name just a few. New York Magazine noted one of the reasons for Swisher’s unusual success is her longevity. She began covering tech in the early ’90s when the people in power today were just starting out. Amazon was looking for its first headquarters in Seattle, Google was in its garage and Netflix was a small startup. While working in the San Francisco bureau of The Wall Street Journal as one of the first reporters on the internet beat she wrote the column "BoomTown," which appeared on the front page of the Marketplace section. Swisher co-produced and co-hosted the Wall Street Journal’s "D: All Things Digital" conference series (now called the Code conference) with Walt Mossberg starting in 2003. It was, and still is, the country's premier conference on tech and media. Following her remarks, Ms. Swisher will answer questions from the audience. The moderator will be Adrianne Jeffries, investigative tech journalist for The Markup, founding editor at The Outline, former editor of Motherboard and reporter for The Verge, The New York Observer, The Virginian Pilot, The New York Times, Businessweek, and the Netflix documentary series Broken. Sponsoring Committee: Senior Lawyers, Diane Fener and Gertrude Pfaffenbach, Co-Chairs Co-Sponsoring Committees: Communications & Media Law, Matthew L. Schafer, Chair Council on Intellectual Property, James R. Klaiber, Chair Mental Health Law, Karen P. Simmons, Chair Technology, Cyber and Privacy Law, Sylvia Khatcherian, Chair

Our guest is Kara Swisher, one of the premiere tech columnists in the country. Our host spoke to Swisher about how social media platforms have affected our ability to talk to one another. Have platforms like Facebook contributed to the rise of misinformation. Do social media platforms have a responsibility to police certain content? Swisher has been a long-time critic of the power of tech companies, their use of personal data and the industry’s lack of accountability. In our interview she said, “We are cheap dates to the data companies.”Swisher has been chronicling the rise of Silicon Valley since the early ‘90s. In 2003, Swisher launched the D: All things Digital Conference with Walt Mossberg, and later co-founded the website Recode with him, which was acquired by Vox in 2015. Swisher has written for The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, and she is currently an editor-at-large for New York Media and a contributor to the New York Times, where she recently launched a new podcast called “Sway: A Podcast about Power.” She is the author of two books, AOL.com (1999) and There Must Be a Pony in Here Somewhere: The AOL Time Warner Debacle and the Quest for a Digital Future (2003).

Vox Media CRO Ryan Pauley sees the company's acquisition of New York Magazine, last year, as pairing up complementary parts -- and he figures advertisers will see it that way too. "Less than 35% of customers spent significant advertising budgets with both companies," Pauley said on the Digiday Podcast. Vox's typical ad categories included tech, auto, financial services and food and beverage. New York Media, on the other hand, leaned toward luxury, fashion and beauty. "Where there was overlap was media and entertainment," Pauley said. But even there, Pauley said, the merged companies could very well attract advertisers more effectively. "All clients are looking for fewer, bigger, better partnerships." Pauley joined the Digiday Podcast to discuss Vox's "hyper-growth areas," its new marketing platform and the death of the third-party cookie.

WEEK IN GEEK: This week, it's a dive into the Fall tv shows that both our hosts were excited to see as Andrew watches the first episode of Alton Brown's Good Eats: Reloaded while D. Bethel reacts to the first three episodes of the second season of The Gifted. GAMES WORKERS UNITE: In the wake of massive layoffs by developers like Telltale Games and Riot Games, The Vulture published an article under the auspice of being a "behind the scenes" look at Red Dead Redemption 2's development at Rockstar Games. The article sparked a lot of controversy, specifically around the (walked back) claim of the team working 100-hour weeks multiple times during 2018 to make sure this game is top of the line in terms of quality. These incidents bring again a highlight to the labor practices of game development, through which D. and Andrew try to wade. RELEVANT EPISODES: Episode 55 - Ga-Don't-Ken: Where Andrew first discusses Alton Brown's Good Eats. Episode 128 - His Curry Name: Where Andrew reminisces about seeing the Alton Brown live show, Eat Your Science. Zimak discusses Facebook's role in New York Media's content distribution, the company's revenue streams, Apple News' potential and more in this session.
