Send us a textPicture this: a boxing event that promised fireworks but left us feeling like we watched a sequel that didn't quite live up to its original. We start with the much-anticipated Fulton versus Figueroa 2, which, despite the hype, was a bit of a letdown, akin to a movie sequel that should've stayed on the cutting room floor. However, Stephen Fulton's choice of attire, resembling jorts and Timberland boots, provided a comedic silver lining to an otherwise forgettable fight night. While some fans found moments to cheer, we couldn't help but commiserate with those left underwhelmed by the outcome. But just when we thought the night couldn't recover, the undercard bouts came swinging with excitement! Kumail Moton, the 18-year-old prodigy, brought the house down with his skillful performance against an older opponent, evoking memories of a playful yet fiercely competitive match. Cuello's astounding comeback from a knockdown to win by knockout against Olivo added another layer of thrill. And who could forget the spirited clash between Jesús Ramos and Jason Rosario? We couldn't resist comparing the bout to a quirky "monkey versus banana" scenario, which brought a much-needed dose of humor to the night's festivities. As the main event featuring David Benavidez and David Morel rolled around, the stakes soared higher. We dive into the controversy of the 11th round, where Morel's late punch and subsequent point deduction stirred up debates. It was a bout filled with emotional intensity and strategic mishaps, but we found moments of levity by likening the referee to Colin Jost's father. Despite the heated exchanges, the post-fight sportsmanship reminded us why we love this sport. To our listeners, thank you for your unwavering support as we continue this boxing journey together, and we invite you to share your thoughts on these thrilling matchups. Despite using ai to write a description that makes us sound smarter, as always, we will break down the best in boxing... with a sense of humor.

Beacon actors working on returning show to stage In 2001, after Reefer Madness: The Musical had run for nearly two years in Los Angeles, its actors and backers built up big expectations for the show's off-Broadway premiere. Then, four days before curtain, 9/11 happened. "All of a sudden, a comedy about questioning and criticizing authority lost its vibe," recalls Christian Campbell, who created the lead role of Jimmy Harper on stage and later screen. Now, with recreational marijuana legal in many parts of the country (including New York) and lampooning business and government figures a staple of the entertainment world, Campbell is part of a production group eyeing a revival. "We have horses running in New York and London and look to line up investors," he says. "This is the most relevant show out there, by far. It's based on a kitschy film, but it's really about misinformation and propaganda." Campbell and his sister, Neve Campbell, are third-generation actors. He's married to actor America Olivo, who is also helping to revive the musical, along with actors Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell, director Andy Fickman and Dan Studney, who wrote the book and music. The song-and-dance version of Reefer Madness, originally a campy, preachy 1936 film about the dangers of cannabis that developed a cult following, opened in 1998 in Los Angeles. Its ill-fated New York run in 2001 lasted only a few weeks. Four years later, Showtime aired Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, also starring Campbell. In 2014, the movie cast reunited to support the BabyQuest Foundation, a nonprofit that helps couples with fertility treatments. Campbell and Olivo had difficulty conceiving a child, but five years ago a "miracle baby" arrived. The couple, who got engaged two weeks after meeting, moved north from Hell's Kitchen on a whim in 2016. "We kept hearing about Beacon at parties and planned to visit Dia," Campbell says. "Four hours after arriving, we put an offer on the place. So far, we've done well with our eye-blink decisions." Taking advantage of the shift in current events and the 25th anniversary of the initial play's awards, a new cast in 2024 revived Reefer Madness: The Musical in Los Angeles, where it ran for four months. A soundtrack album was released on Jan. 10 (see reefermadness.com). For the moment, Campbell has paused his thespian career, which included most recently the lead in Beacon resident Jeremy Schonfeld's The Father Who Stayed and a year on his mother Marnie Neve's favorite soap opera, All My Children, as the fourth incarnation of Bobby Womack. "We laugh at the fact that a character can disappear for a long time without explanation and just come back as a completely new person who doesn't even resemble the actor that previously played the part," he says. "My guy had blond hair and blue eyes and one day he went up into the attic to get some ski equipment and never came down. Years later, he magically reappears - as me." Acting on a soap opera, he says, is "one of the hardest gigs there is - I gained new respect for the craft. You have to turn water into some form of wine. It may taste like Manischewitz in the end, but at least it's better than before."

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, we're diving into a topic that affects many kids, teens, and adults: social anxiety. Social anxiety is more than just the usual nervousness or shyness; it can significantly impact daily life, making even the simplest social interactions panic-inducing. We're going to break down what social anxiety is, how it differs from normal social worries, and most importantly, how to spot it in children and teens. Our guest today is Sarah Olivo, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Sarah specializes in evidence-based treatments, particularly CBT, and is dedicated to helping children, teens, and young adults overcome anxiety and achieve meaningful change in their lives. As the Head of Lumate Academy, Sarah is passionate about spreading the benefits of CBT to those with limited access to these life-changing therapies. In this episode, we'll explore the various types of treatment options available, with a particular focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We'll also discuss practical ways parents and educators can support kids and teens struggling with social anxiety. Understanding the difference between typical developmental anxiety and social anxiety is crucial. While it's normal for kids to experience some level of anxiety as they grow, social anxiety is characterized by an intense fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations, often leading to panic. With Sarah's guidance, by the end of this episode, you'll better understand social anxiety, its impact, and the powerful ways we can help our kids and teens manage and overcome it. Show Notes: [2:18] - Many kids and teens experience anxiety and a lot of times they are a normal part of growing up. [3:29] - Some of the questions asked are, “How frequently is anxiety happening?” and “Is it causing a lot of distress for the child or the family?” [4:57] - There are types of anxiety that are developmentally appropriate to experience at different stages of development. [6:00] - The core of social anxiety is the fear of being judged by others and embarrassed in some way. [7:01] - For many kids and teens with social anxiety, social situations are panic-inducing. [8:38] - There is also Generalized Anxiety Disorder which does differ from social anxiety. [11:28] - As parents, we can read our child's mind. There are times when we won't be able to tell the thoughts that lead to anxiety. [13:33] - For those with social anxiety, it's not that they don't know how to act in certain situations. [15:27] - There are ways to get help. One of the most effective treatments for social anxiety is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) [18:04] - Social situations activate the threat center for those with social anxiety. [21:19] - For treating social anxiety, goals will be different for each individual. [23:25] - Social anxiety is far different from simply being an introvert. [26:23] - Individual programs are fine, but group programs are excellent for helping overcome social anxiety struggles and meet goals. [29:04] - Privacy is a concern for some group programs, but it is not something to worry about. [32:18] - Social anxiety that goes unmanaged can lead to chronic anxiety. [35:15] - If someone as a child or a teenager struggles with social anxiety, it is likely that a parent also does. [38:07] - At school, teachers tend to cater to a child or teen's social anxiety. [39:56] - Oftentimes we only notice the negatives. We need to notice when a child is working on their struggles and practicing the things they're learning.
