Leslie Lee at the age of 58, is just beginning to explore what it truly means to be adopted. As a same-race adoptee, she was placed with her family at eight weeks old, according to the transcript she received from the agency (Louise Wise) that facilitated the adoption. For most of her life, she carried this part of her identity in silence—only sharing it with a select few friends and family members. Secrecy, and at times shame, shaped much of her experience.Today, she's married, a proud mother of two adult sons, and grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren. Professionally, she built a meaningful career as a human resource specialist, with over 23 years of experience in higher education. She also holds several professional certifications in her field.Outside of work, she's rediscovering her love for reading as a way to disconnect from the noise of current events. Leslie recently took up knitting—still a novice, but enjoying the learning process through both in-person and online lessons. This season of life is about learning what brings her peace, what pleases her, and what helps manage stress in healthy, fulfilling ways. She's honored to share space within the adoption constellation and to finally connect with a community that understands this journey—people who simply get her, just because.Music by Corey Quinn

Leslie opens up about her personal journey into aesthetics, motivated by a deep interest in helping others look and feel their best as they age gracefully. We discussed ethical practices in aesthetics, the evolution of beauty standards, and the importance of integrity over profit. Discover the differences between neurotoxins and dermal fillers, the risks of excessive injections, and the impact of seeking cosmetic procedures abroad. Learn about the unique challenges in the aesthetics industry, the need for proper training, and the emphasis on patient safety and self-love.  We also talked about societal pressures, body dysmorphia, and the significant impact of ethical practice in aesthetics. Leslie shares candid wisdom on the importance of integrity, proper training, and the ethical responsibility. If you have ever wondered why people look weird, over done or been curious about these practices yourself, check this out. Please note that this was an informative session for me, I am not pro or against any of these practices but they are being overused without caution and I wanted to discuss the dangers and talk about Leslie's motto: it's all about loving ourselves.  Key lessons: Seeking professional advice and moderation in cosmetic procedures are emphasized in the podcast, promoting a cautious approach to beauty enhancements. The importance of prioritizing integrity over profit for injectors is a key focus, highlighting ethical practices in the beauty industry. Risks of excessive fillers are warned against, with an emphasis on inner beauty, self-love, and the need for proper training and ethical standards in aesthetics. First up, Paul was able to connect this film with Corey's previous Babe (1995). This is a film about race relations in the attempt to organize a Chicago slaughterhouse in 1918-19, it's The Killing Floor (1984). The film was made for PBS as a sort of pilot for a (n abandoned) 10-part series on the American labor movement. It was heavily researched by the producer, Elsa Rassbach; written by Obie-winning playwright, Leslie Lee; and directed by Bill Duke (of whom, the Pakler family has a connection...). There's a lot to cover, so put on your union pin and enjoy!

On this episode, hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs welcome back Pinnland Empire guru Marcus Pinn to discuss Duke's 1984 feature debut, The Killing Floor. After premiering on the PBS American Playhouse series, winning the Special Jury Prize at Sundance and being chosen as an Official Selection of the "La Semaine de la Critique" section at Cannes, the movie practically disappeared from sight until its recent 4k restoration and preservation by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Set during a period of migration of Southern black workers to the giant Chicago slaughterhouses during the first World War, Killing Floor concerns the struggle to build an interracial union even as meatpacking management actively plotted to divide the workface along ethnic lines, a conflict which boiled over in the race riots of 1919. Featuring early performances from Alfre Woodard and Dennis Farina, an exhaustively researched screenplay by Leslie Lee (from a story by producer Elsa Rassbach) and assured direction from Duke, it's a film that deserves more recognition for both its subject matter and its own time and place in American filmmaking. Recap: Recent Developments in Coffee

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2021 3:46

Welcome to Recap, a brief overview of recent coffee developments every two weeks from the Specialty Coffee Association.World Coffee Research, or WCR, announced a new five-year strategy in mid-February, beginning 2021. Bound by coffee tree growth timelines, the organization typically plans its research agenda in five-year increments. The new five year strategy, titled “Enhancing Country Competitiveness to Bolster Origin Diversity,” will foster increases in productivity, profitability, and climate resilience while enhancing quality and mitigating supply risk. As a part of the strategy, WCR will focus on 11 countries in total, which represent over half of the world's farmers and 31% of global coffee exports. By prioritizing origin diversity, WCR hopes to ensure the coffee industry can continue to access coffee's unique flavors while distributing the economic benefits of coffee to farmers in key origins. Researchers are studying the similarities of the coffee and coca trade in Bolivia and Peru in order to learn more about the costs and benefits of development in relation to current security-oriented policies. The team consists of researchers across three institutions: the University of Reading, the Andean Information Network, and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru. In a recent feature for The Conversation, Thomas Grisaffi and Linda Farthing explore some of the reasons why farmers in Peru have ripped out coffee trees to plant coca. A plant with a rich social, cultural, and medicinal significance in indigenous Andean cultures, coca has largely been grown to produce cocaine since the mid-nineteenth century. Compared to coffee, coca offers many benefits to farmers: the fast-growing plant is ready to harvest in a year, rather than three, and is much lighter to carry when harvesting. It also offers farmers more financial security than any other crop, as demand is constant. 25 kg sacks of coca, which can be harvested three-to-four times a year, fluctuate in price between US$30-US$70 per sack, where coffee--which can only be harvested once a year--offers US$37 on average per sack. Recent efforts by the Peruvian government to crack down on coca-growing have resulted in violence, rather than assistance in finding realistic economic alternatives. The researchers have made recommendations that place sustainable development, poverty alleviation, equal opportunity, shared responsibility, and participation in the decision-making process at their core. The Alliance for Coffee Excellence, or ACE, and Hawaiian green coffee company Isla Custom Coffees announced 16 winning lots in a recent competition, with 12 of the winning lots all featuring controlled yeast fermentation in processing. The top scoring coffee was a washed-process SL34 produced by Kraig and Leslie Lee of Kona Farm Direct Coffee, fermented with a wine yeast strain. The strain was chosen to enhance the coffee's acidity and fruity flavor. The competition is a part of ACE's Private Collection series, which features partnerships with origin-specific green coffee companies, and is separate from ACE's Cup of Excellence competition and auction series. The Private Collection auction with Isla Custom Coffees will take place on March 25.If you want to dive deeper into anything you heard today, check out the links in the description of this episode. Recap will be back in two weeks' time. Leslie ‘Lee' Kasumba was born in Cuba and raised in South Africa. Her father initially wanted her to become a doctor, but Lee found her passion in another field which would later make her name known in the African media and entertainment industry. At the young age of 19, Lee began working as a DJ and producer for the biggest radio station in South Africa, YFM. She also functioned as the editor at Y Magazine during the 8 years she worked there. She also wrote for Centric Magazine, hosted the Price of Fame panel with Quincy Jones, and even interviewed Tony Blair for the first ever 'MTV Base Meets'. Lee has served as a TV host for Emcee Africa, and also hosted the African Live 8 music concert, and presented the Key Note address to the United Nations at the Global African Hip-Hop Summit.  Her radio show, “Arambe” was the biggest radio show to come out of South Africa and the first to actively promote and support South African nationals. Lee has also worked internationally as an on-air personality both as a host and panelist, including being a panelist for Big Brother Africa. Lee is also regarded as having played an important role in Hip hop in Africa, having been labelled the 'First Lady of Hip hop' in South Africa. She's hosted several hip-hop battles and travelled around the continent as TV host for Emcee Africa, interviewing various International hip hop acts like Damian Marley, K'naan, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Missy Elliott, among others. In this episode, Lee talks about her career, how she started, and where it led to. She shares how all her experience in the creative and entertainment industry, the highs and lows, the blessings and the challenges, has shaped her into what she is now.  Identifying as a ‘global citizen', Lee talks about being the bridge between the creative industry and sociopolitical change. She discusses important issues like how the creative industry has done a better job of uniting Africans in ways that politics can't do, and the need of a cultural shift as Africans to move towards true unity.

As punitive measures in the spirit of reformation. These outsiders are mandated to be beheaded by the guillotine at the hands of a sadistic otherworldly vengeful alien, an intergalactic trooper, who uses her bewitching powers and stark wit to, in a totalitarian manner, elicit confessions from these fugitives as she cannot merely deliver these inmates traveling in an out of control pod, to a novel full of hope planet without forcing these cellmates to repent first—as ordained by the dictatorial government of our unholy planet earth. This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!  1. We do recommend you listen to Part 1 first. Our review of the best scenes diverges into our wishlist for the next series of Bond films. We reference a not-so-obscure South Park catch phrase in our worst scenes. We harken back to some oh-so-good action movie conventions with this film and reference The Fugitive to Predator to Butch Cassidy to the Force Awakens as we examine some of our nit-picks with the plot. We connect lots of dots in the Marvel Cinematic universe and wonder how they’ll build the next phase from the game-changer of Wakanda and Vibranium, cheer on the next Avengers film, compare it to what DC has done, and we even speculate on how the Wakanda cinematic universe might unravel. Then we dive into the backlash against the film and have a substantive discussion regarding some of the naysayers and critics of the movie. We also break down some of the themes and politics of Black Panther, which we argue have been misconstrued by some. The cinematic merits of the film are undeniable, but we do cite some of the harshest critics of the film, including journalist Leslie Lee’s criticisms found here https://twitter.com/leslieleeiii/status/964697251372257281 It’s a serious and substantive discussion worth having in our opinion, but his criticism does have its merits, and we do try and make sense of it. As always, thanks for listening. We’ll get back to our previews and reviews of the Oscar Categories as we plan to complete that series with our Original Screenplay, Director, and Best Picture episodes. Then we’ll do an Oscar Prediction pod followed by the Mike Mike & Oscars, which will include our Top 10 films of 2017 as well as our favorite performances, direction, screenwriting, etc… Of course, we’ll be covering and reviewing Hollywood’s big night. We’ve got some surprises in store for you. Do please help us spread the word about our little show, chat with us on social media, and get ready for the final push to and through the Oscars. On this episode of the Katie Halper Show, we dissect the way the media smeared Bernie Sanders and his position on identity politics, which, it turns out, is much more nuanced than the position of his peers. Lee argues that the media disingenuously and intentionally distorts what Sanders says for political and ideological reasons and that people who are honest mistakenly pick up this manufactured narrative. We then talk to Matt Stoller about how and why Trump was elected and how our response to him will shape the agenda. He also warns us against taking economists seriously and shares his thoughts on Paul Krugman and populism vs progressivism. And he kills some narratives with his own bare hands. He's also a surprisingly good motivational speaker.
