"I think it's clear that unless there is a substantial change in Covid-19, we will not go back to any severe restrictions. Essentially we would need a new pandemic virus to consider lockdowns," Dr Coatsworth said.  "You've said it Oly, we have to live with it. Which means we have to have policies that enable us to do so and we don't have that at the moment."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Nick Coatsworth claims Omicron 'clearly not' more dangerous than flu

Daily Mail Dr Nick Coatsworth claims Omicron 'clearly not' more dangerous than flu. Former deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth has claimed the omicron variant of Covid is 'clearly not' more dangerous than the flu. Dr Coatsworth said people without pre-existing medical conditions had little to fear from the milder strain once vaccinated and most wouldn't need booster shots. The Canberra infectious disease physician earlier told Daily Mail Australia the time had come to stop wearing masks and predicted the pandemic would end in 2022. 'No, it's not. It's clearly not,' he told Sky News when asked if Omicron was more dangerous than seasonal flu. Dr Coatsworth claimed Covid booster shots were only necessary for vulnerable or elderly Australians and those with chronic illnesses. 'Young, fit, healthy adults and kids, their risk was so low anyway that if you take it from 0.007 to 0.001 per cent – I'm using those numbers to demonstrate the effect, I'd have to get the actual numbers for you,' he said. 'So, for the booster perspective, from the disease perspective, this is an illness that will very rarely cause harm to young, fit, healthy adults and kids,' he said. This is despite the waning of Delta and Omicron waves in Europe and Israel being correlated with the rollout of booster shots. Booster shots are mandated for workers in 'high risk' settings - such as hospitals, aged care, schools and prisons, in most states across Australia. The Federal Government updated its vaccine policy last week on the advice of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). Australians will no longer be classed as 'up to date' on their Covid vaccinations if they have not had a booster six months after their second dose. Dr Nick Coatsworth has also called to end mask wearing as the nation enters its second year living with the virus. 'I think the tide has turned on masks. People recognise they had a place at a time of uncertainty, but are appropriately reassessing their value especially in schools,' he tweeted on Tuesday. The top doctor has been outspoken about Australia's route out of the pandemic believing community-wide restrictions weren't fair on the rest of the community, who are already protected by a robust health care system alongside mass vaccination. Speaking with 2GB radio on Wednesday, Dr Coatsworth said during the uncertainty of 2020 - when there was more severe strains of the virus and no vaccine - measures had been implemented that had 'minimal benefit' in curtailing new infections. 'When you drop restrictions the first ones you drop are the ones without any evidence-based, and there's no evidence-based for masks in schools,' he said. 'We have to be honest with the Australian community about that, if we're not, when we need to dial-up the level of restrictions in the future - which I think is unlikely - you'll start losing people.' He recommended the 'low value interventions' be ditched first with masks in schools the first to be scrapped. This is my opinion. With infection numbers in Sydney refusing to budge, the head of Australia's top medical body has warned that the NSW capital could be facing an "indefinite" lockdown - with only one clear pathway out.President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Omar Khorshid, said the city was looking at living with restrictions for the "foreseeable future until everyone is vaccinated", urging Sydneysiders to obey health orders."Of course, we don't have enough vaccines to vaccinate the whole of Sydney communities so the only option is to get on top of this virus right now," Dr Khorshid said. Australian PM Scott Morrison with Dr Omar Khorshid. Photo / Getty Images"Vaccines are doing their job, we know they are doing their job and we are seeing a number of young people in hospital in ICU, rather than the huge numbers of older people we saw in Victoria."That is a sign that the vaccines are working. Vaccines are our way out of this in the longer term but for right now, for today in Sydney, the only way to stop this virus spreading is to stop people talking to each other, people coming close to each other, people breathing on each other, coughing on each other."We know this from the lessons we have learned throughout the lockdown, throughout the pandemic and our only option is to do what needs to be done right now here in Sydney."Adviser to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Covid-19 response and UNSW epidemiologist, Mary-Louise McLaws, had a similarly grim warning about the length of Sydney's lockdown - currently pegged to end next Friday, July 30."We still need another three to four weeks because we need to get that proportion [of cases in people who haven't been in full lockdown] to zero," Professor McLaws told The Project last night."Once we've got that zero, then we need that to continue for 14 days to ensure we've mitigated everything."Now, you could lift some small restrictions off, but you wouldn't be able to lift all of them off until 28 days after that first zero of anybody out in the community that hadn't been in full lockdown."It's a long duration: "Expect another two months before we've absolutely eradicated it … but we don't have to stay in lockdown for that long."As NSW reported another 98 cases this morning, chief health officer Kerry Chant once again revealed exactly why every Australian should be desperate to get a Covid-19 vaccination.Of the 82 Sydneysiders – across a range of ages – currently in hospital with the virus, 24 are in intensive care — and of those, only one has had a single dose of the AstraZeneca jab."Vaccination is critical," Dr Chant told reporters."Can I just urge everyone in the community who is eligible for the vaccine to go forth and make an appointment. Go on to the eligibility checker and access the vaccine. I would urge anyone, particularly over 60, to go and get an AstraZeneca vaccine from their general practice and remember I have also said that GPs are working very hard and they will prioritise older individuals over younger in terms of bookings, because of the need to protect our elderly."Even one dose of AstraZeneca can have some effect, as well as one dose of the Pfizer, but two doses gives the optimal protection. And having two doses of the vaccine can really reduce your risk of hospitalisation and death associated with Covid."In a similar message to her state on Friday, the CHO said "it is essential for us to live somewhat normally with this Delta virus and any other variant we might get thrown out that we are going to have to be highly vaccinated as a population and also we are going to have to live with booster shots".While Dr Chant said she'd like for 80 per cent of the adult population in NSW to ultimately be vaccinated, former deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth said lockdowns nationwide could no longer be needed in about four months — once 50 per cent of Australians are vaccinated.Speaking to The Australian Financial Review, Dr Coatsworth said "...

Sam Emery: Virgin Australia boss wants border reopened soon, even if it means ‘some people may die' from COVID-19

Virgin Australia's chief executive has likened COVID-19 to the flu and says she wants the international border to reopen soon even if it unfortunately means “some people may die” from the virus.Federal budget papers last week indicated Australia would not reopen until mid-next year, but airline boss Jayne Hrdlicka said if vaccination levels were high enough, Australia should reopen sooner.“COVID will be part of the community,” she told a business lunch in Brisbane on Monday.“We will become sick with COVID and it won't put us in hospital, and it won't put people into dire straits because we'll have a vaccine.“Some people may die, but it will be way smaller than with the flu. “We're forgetting the fact that we've learnt how to live with lots of viruses and challenges over the years and we've got to learn how to live with this.”More than 3.3 million people are estimated to have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.A Virgin Australia Group spokesman later said the airline wold continue to work closely with state and federal governments to support the safety of the community.“We agree with state and federal leaders that eradication of COVID-19 cannot be the goal for our country,” he said.“The question is not if but when we will be sufficiently vaccinated to protect our people and our hospital system to open our international borders.“We must learn to live with COVID-19 in the community in a way that protects the health and safety of our people, but also opens Australia up to the rest of the world.”Ms Hrdlicka's comments come after Victorian chief health officer Brett Sutton said Australia needed to come to terms with “letting COVID run” once vaccinations were widely available. In recordings obtained by The Age from an event in April, Professor Sutton said Australia needed to accept there would be cases of coronavirus after borders reopened.“We need to somehow communicate to the public that we've gotten to a place of complacency because we've driven transmission to zero but we will face newly emerging transmission and a critical juncture where we need to make a call on letting it run,” he said.Australia's former deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth has also said the idea of eradicating COVID-19 indefinitely was a “false idol”.Dr Coatsworth said Australia needed to embrace the reality of the virus circulating in the community.“I think we've been incredibly successful but with that success becomes a risk that we will be aiming for something that's essentially not achievable,” he told the Today show on Sunday.“If we're not going to get to eradication because this virus is going to be circulating in the globe for many years, if not indefinitely, then at some point we need to consider that the virus will also be within our own borders ... we need to help the community come to terms with that reality.”- words by Angie Raphael, NCA

Australia will likely begin a “slow methodical and safe opening” of its international borders in the first half of 2022, Nick Coatsworth says. His comments come as a new opinion poll shows an overwhelming majority of people are supportive of the international border remaining closed.Prime Minister Scott Morrison is facing renewed calls for the border to reopen from business leaders and MPs after assumptions in last week's federal budget revealed the border would not lift until mid-2022.Dr Coatsworth, the nation's former deputy chief medical officer, said vaccinations would help Aussies feel more comfortable about the threat of COVID-19.“I think at least the first half of 2022 is when we can start a slow methodical and safe opening up of our international borders,” he told Today.“I think it's completely reasonable for three-quarters of Aussies to not want the borders open right now.“What we have to start a conversation with the community about is what do we do in 2022?“What do we do when the majority of Australians are vaccinated and immune, safe from hospitalisation, safe from death from COVID-19?”Almost three in four voters surveyed in an exclusive Newspoll for The Australian said international borders should remain closed until at least the middle of next year and supported the government's approach.Victorian Liberal MP Katie Allen agreed that Australia should retain its border restrictions for now, saying COVID-19 is still raging overseas.“We are where we are because we have done the right thing, listened to the evidence, and no one thinks we should open now,” Dr Allen told Today.“It doesn't mean we shouldn't start having a conversation about what the future might look like.“But we're in a good position for now and we should stick with it.”Labor backbencher Joel Fitzgibbon said a group of MPs pressuring Mr Morrison to open the border sooner were feeling pressure from voters in their own electorates. But he said Australians were being asked to put their own population at risk to get stranded Aussies home.“We are leaving people there to die, literally,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.“This would not be happening if the government had moved sooner on quarantining and indeed on vaccination.”Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce told Sunrise the risk of coronavirus running rampant in Australia would cause real political pain for the government.“No one likes a situation where people are locked up or held overseas, but unfortunately, we gotta go with the risks for the people here,” Mr Joyce said.“The alternative is that people come back here and people die. Then there be a real outcry.“People would say that ‘you are responsible for those deaths, you are responsible for my mother or father dying'.”text by Jade Gailberger, NCA NewsWire

The federal budget Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down last week contained within it an assumption that has seriously thrown business leaders and state governments - that even with the vaccine rollout this year, Australia’s international borders would remain shut until well in to 2022. NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is demanding some kind of certainty over borders reopening, linked to milestones in the vaccine rollout. Even the former deputy chief medical officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth is calling for a change in thinking about living with COVID long term. There's a growing discussion among some health officials and politicians that we even when we all get our COVID-19 shot, that won't defeat the virus. Dr Norman Swan says that once Australia has a higher rate of immunisation, we need to come to terms with having the virus in the community long-term, like the common cold.

It's the last episode of The Young IPA Podcast and we're going out with a bang. Premiers rush to shut their borders to NSW despite the outbreak being under control and cause a fresh wave of suffering – why is it constant panic and where is Scott Morrison? The Coate inquiry into Victoria's Hotel Quarantine gets handed down and it's a dud – but former Health Minister Jenny Mikakos might have saved the day. We award our villains of the year, with no surprises as Daniel Andrews and Nick Coatsworth's “make your beds” quote take the honours, before we speak to our Hero of the Year David Limbrick MP about the state of human rights in Victoria now and in the future, and how we should never forget how the government locked up public housing towers (20:50-47:06). At the end, we discuss Paris' city council being fined for breaking gender equity laws by having too many women, the ABC's mad rush to get to a 50/50 gender split on on-air talent and the viral article saying black people's votes should count twice because apparently your skin colour should determine political representation, before signing off for the last time.

After Em and Michael decided a new lockdown extension was the perfect time to re-commit to losing the extra weight they've added during the first two lockdowns, New Lockdown, New Us was born. So it makes sense for Em and Michael to begin this episode with a full rundown of their health journey so far. That journey got off to a rocky start with Em experiencing a teensy hiccup on night one, where she found herself secretly eating in bed at 11pm. She can totally justify it though, which she naturally does, that leads into a game of Justify My Food (yes Em sings the intro live, and yes it's Madonna inspired and squeal, I know right, so excited) anyway this game sees Michael offering up various food items, which Em then justifies by offering up the perfect reason for why it's okay to eat each one, no matter how bad it is for you, trust us, it's a very special skill. We'll also talk about Em's new self appointed title - Queen of the Magpies. She's convinced she is now one of them, having been accepted into their feathered community. We then move onto the recommendation from the Victorian Deputy Chief Health Officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth that we all make our beds, and maybe try some housework to help us get through the new lockdown extension. Understandably Em had some very strong thoughts to share around that, then inspired by Daniel Andrews talking about sex, and the difference between friends and intimate partners, during a recent press conference, Michael impersonates Dan explaining sex to his son. There's also time to talk through the announcement that ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians' is ending after 20 seasons, and how Em has an odd respect for that family. She actually doesn't judge them as much as you might think she probably would, because naturally Em respects a strong matriarch that's getting shit done. That being said, she probably wouldn't sell her childs sex tape...but everything else she gets, they're husslers, and she can respect that. So once again, it's a heady mix of all of the things, but we can justify that, so sit down and enjoy another substantial feed of delectable audio delights, with a hefty seasoning of laughs throughout. Il documento illustrava correttamente e in modo documentato come fossero state prodotte quelle linee cellulari, stigmatizzandone l'uso.
