Over the last fifty years, Gordon MacDonald has: served as a pastor, written a dozen best-selling books – most notably Ordering Your Private World – and served as a trustee or senior leader at a variety of organizations, including Christianity Today, World Vision, Intervarsity and Denver Seminary. I've had the privilege of knowing Gordon for thirty years, have had him speak in a variety of venues – including at Christ Church - and have called him for advice (or encouragement) from time to time. In this podcast I ask him the kind of questions I ask him when we are not recording a podcast.
Jonathan Reynolds, CEO of Titus Talent Strategies, has generosity as one of his personal core values. This means generosity in giving back to the community and to his team members. He knows enabling his people to have a positive impact on others creates a feeling of connectedness that motivates them to grow. Jonathan has spent most of his career setting ambitious goals and pushing on the gas pedal until he reaches them. That ‘no-brakes' approach, however, comes at a price, and one he's starting to realize is far too high. In this episode, Jonathan reflects on the importance of leaders investing in their own inner world. Listen in as he explores the paradox of striving to make an impact through his company while struggling to care for his own well-being in the process. Ambition in leadership can be positive, but it does have a spectrum that must be kept in check. It's good to want to make a difference, but “Drivenness must be consecrated daily”.2. “Business brings emptiness. I always keep a sabbath.” There are no two sabbaths that are the same. It's all about getting true rest and being renewed. If you can't get everything done in 6 days, then you're either doing too much or are doing it wrong. 3. About every seven years, your dreams will get tested. This is either because you fail, or someone fails you.4. Right now at 81, I am most interested in raising up younger pastors and being a spiritual father to those who will go after me. 5. For those who are looking for a spiritual father or a mentor, my advice is to start “dating”. Date your potential mentor, take them to coffee, ask them questions, see how you click and whether or not you hit it off. Don't just ask someone to be your mentor. Take it slow and take time to develop a real relationship first. 6. Failure always generates humility. Always take full responsibility for your mistakes. Think about what you can learn from them and what you can teach others from them. Never cover up your mistakes.Quotes from the Episode:“Drivenness must be consecrated daily.”“Busyness brings emptiness. I always keep a sabbath.”“Failure always generates humility.”"Never ever waste a crisis. A crisis always produces new answers, new insights, and new people.”“The practice is painful so that the game is pleasurable.”Resources Mentioned:Ordering Your Private World, by Gordon MacDonaldIf you want to 10x your growth next year, I want to challenge you to launch or join an L3 Mastermind Group. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss how recent studies have revealed the steady rise within culture of everything from depression to drug use, mental health issues to suicide and more. To help people cope, there's been an increased emphasis on the need for “self care,” with apps and services designed to help you eat better, sleep more, find new hobbies, etc. With all of these self-help tricks at our disposal, shouldn't we be feeling better? This episode will take a look at what the Bible has to say about the idea of selflessness, and what Christians can be doing to care for themselves. Episode Links There are several series that Dr. White has taught at Mecklenburg Community Church that can help you to explore more about the ideas netted out in this episode. A series called “Fit for Life” looks at the Bible's wisdom to be spiritually fit, emotionally fit, physically fit and financially fit, with all installments demonstrating how God-based self care is what is needed the most. A series called “Ordering Your Private World” addresses how to bring order to the substance of your life, with installments on motivation, use of time, wisdom and knowledge, spiritual strength and restoration. And finally, the series “Simplifying Your Life” explores the Bible's practical insights and guidelines for escaping the sometimes overwhelming demands in terms of activities and relationships, family and faith. In this episode, Jake and Bob host Brett Powell on the podcast. Brett is co-host with Jake on Way of the Heart Podcast, a conversion for men about journeying through life with a heart fully alive. Brett has extensive experience in leadership within the church and a passion for men's ministry and fatherhood. Brett gets real about the heart of leadership: relationship with others and relationship with God, and why our relationships at home matter more than anything else as leaders. Thank you, Brett, for the gentle reminder to re-evaluate what we're prioritizing in light of what's most important! Quote: We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus. - St. John Paul II Key points: Work is an easy place to go for affirmation, but parenthood is where our true selves show How leadership manifests in fatherhood How performance orientation can get in the way of unconditional love What does ‘freedom to fail' mean and look like? The importance of desiring good for the people you lead The heart multiplies itself into the people it leads The yoke of Christ vs the yoke we put on others The impact of shame and an unhealed heart in leadership Why prioritizing relationships in the home matters more than anything else The currency of trust is foundational in organizations Practical Application: Assess: where are you currently putting your resources either in your business or your family life? What does this communicate about your priorities? Read Fr. Jacques Philippe's article on Fatherhood (below in the shownotes). Choose to do one thing this week to build trust in a family relationship, work relationship and/or a friendship. Take time to reflect on where you might be living out of a performance orientation. How might this be affecting your relationships and what's one thing you can do this week to work on that? If you could get advice on how to make decisions from the wisest man who ever lived, would you take it? At our Waynesboro Tailgate this past Spring, Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia, Josh Turner, gives us that advice from King Solomon out of Proverbs 4. “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 The NIV states it this way, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Guard. Your. Heart. It's the number one tip he gives. Above. All. Else. It should be the number one priority in our lives. When something needs guarding, it's because it is valuable. In the same way, we guard our hearts because “if we lose our heart, the potential is we might lose everything.” In this episode, Josh shares three ways we can begin to guard our hearts. 1. Resist the urgency of the day for the priority of prayer. Prayer and time with the Father is the work. We can't live off yesterday's blessings and time with God. 2. Know who we are in Christ. “True freedom comes when we find our identity not in what other people think about us, not in how popular we are, but very clearly in Christ alone.” 3. Acknowledge we have blind spots and have friends who we give permission to speak into our lives. “Sin demands to have a man by himself.” Bonhoeffer Tune in to Josh to better understand how to make guarding your heart a priority in your life. Things can look good on the outside, but if you peer on the inside, we might be headed for disaster. “Men fall in private long before they fall in public.” J.C. As we continue our series “Home,” guest speaker, Pastor Gordon MacDonald shares his thoughts on supporting actors—those who contribute to shape the lives of others—looking back on his 82 years. In a world that celebrates extraordinary people...is it possible that we've missed out on the value of ‘ordinary'? It turns out that after a lifetime... the things that stick out are the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people. We'll take a look at some of the ordinary figures in the New Testament who had a notable impact and hear stories from Pastor Gordon MacDonald's own ministry. He is a pastor, global speaker, and author of several books including his best-seller “Ordering Your Private World.” He and his wife Gail MacDonald have been generous mentors to Cape Cod Church and it was a privilege to invite them to our church. Ever feel like life is out of control? Like you can't catch up? Like your thoughts and emotions are out of control? In this week's episode, we talk about how we run the race of life at a sustainable pace, and how God's word helps us know how to do that. Resources mentioned in this episode: Ordering Your Private World, a book by Gordon MacDonald Get Your Life Back, a sermon series with free resources by Carey Nieuwhof at Connexus Church Life Giving List, a free resource from Steve Cuss Scriptures mentioned in this episode: Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 How to follow Jesus: The Bible tells us we must receive salvation through faith: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) We must understand God's great love for us: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17) We must declare this truth out loud over our life: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10) We must be willing to repent from our sins and turn to Jesus: Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord (Acts 3:19) You must be willing to leave your old life behind: lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. (Ephesians 4:22-24) You must be willing to take up your cross: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24) You will live a new life in Christ! Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17) You must live in step with the Spirit: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:24-25) Keep faith alive: read your Bible, pray daily, join a church, serve other people and keep listening to podcasts that will help you grow! Thanks for listening to This Divine Moment.

Are you discontent even though everyone around you thinks you “have it all?” Lloyd Reeb, founding partner of Halftime Institute, is on a mission to help you ensure your next season in life is defined by joy, impact, and balance. Today, Lloyd will remind us of the importance of not just doing what is valuable, but doing what is priceless. Regardless of your age or what you can bring to the marketplace, Lloyd will encourage you to get clear, get free and get going. SHOW NOTES: How can your second-half be even more impactful, fun and joyful than the first half was? At 14-years-old, Lloyd's father helped him purchased a few acres of land, charging interest which taught him values. “What do I need to do to pass down the values of generosity, honesty, and hard work before passing the monies down.” A successful building developer inadvertently taught him the importance of significance beyond success. The exposure to what was happening around the world inspired Lloyd to serve or give back to others. Lloyd was introduced to Bob Buford, author of best-selling book Halftime. Because they naturally bracketed the movement of people wanting to renew themselves at mid-life, they created The Halftime Institute. “Sloppy busy”: Your calendar is full but you have a nagging lack of focus and leverage that you had in your career. Resist the temptation to start working on the solution and take the time to think through your core strengths. Gallup's Strengths Finder 2.0 played an important role in their children being heard. Get a copy or each other's strengths like I did with my family. Halftime is a remedy, not a strategy: Think about who you are and then the work you’ve been given. Don’t just jump in and get “sloppy busy.” Take time to reflect on who you are and the best place you can give back. Ask yourself: When was I at my best? What was the most painful experience in my life and what did I learn from it? Very often our pain from the past calls out a path for our future. Think about who you are and not the work. Valuable vs. priceless: On one side of the paper, write a list of all the valuable things your life. On the other side, write the priceless things. What are you doing to protect the valuable versus priceless things? The Halftime Institute: University for the second half of life, a place where people blessed with success, begin to explore how to make the second half even richer + fulfilling than the first half. Have a healthy mid-life renewal: Get clear, get free, get going. Intentionality: Lloyd strives to help other leaders be more intentional in not only how they give their time away but also building a world-class family. The challenge we’re exploring tonight is—how do we best manage our time in order to fulfill our calling? Part of my “come-to-Jesus” experience during this series on “Ordering Your Private World” is admitting to myself that I’ve been adversely affected by our technology-driven, fast-paced Western world. Have you? I check my phone at almost every stoplight. How many likes did my Facebook post get? How many views of my online sermon? I can’t seem to stop multi-tasking, and I realize it’s a problem.
How many of you are busy? Ok. Let’s dig a little deeper. There’s a busyness that reflects a plan…a set of priorities…an inner sense of purpose. That’s a good and satisfying busyness. But, there’s also a destructive busyness that reflects chaos. I’m talking about the tyranny of the urgent. If that’s your type of busyness, then your work never ends…your mood isn’t great…and you feel drained spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and physically.

Mentioned in This Episode: Lasting Impact by Carey Nieuwhof: http://amzn.to/1XNLTe1 Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast: http://careynieuwhof.com/mypodcast/ The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes: http://apple.co/1m8SaTf 3 Takeaways for Leaders: 1. Key relationships keep you healthy. Find a mentor who doesn't want to talk to you about church and your ministry, but instead shows an interest in your personal walk with God. Furthermore, find someone who has walked the road you are walking and can offer you valuable wisdom and insight. 2. Live with high-impact moments in short amounts of time. Pastor Josh talks about how he has committed himself to never being lazy with his time. Although the season of life he lives in might only allow him to spend a few short hours each night with his family, he makes the most of those hours by being present as a husband and a father. Make sure that wherever you are, be all there. 3. Identify your disciplines rather than set goals for yourself, and these disciplines will help you to accomplish your goals. For instance, one of Pastor Josh's disciplines is spending time in prayer at a certain point in his morning run every day. As leaders, we must decide how we will achieve something rather than what we will achieve. Quotes From This Episode: “I've never been more secure in who I am because I've never found less of my identity in what I do.” “If you're upset with your team's attitude, it's probably because you have a bad attitude.” “A healthy leader usually starts leading a healthy team.” “Who you surround yourself with--the questions they ask, what they seem to care most about--usually determines what you strive to be best at.” “Live with open hands because the moment you close your hands, you take ownership, but it was never yours. Give it back to God daily.” “When it comes to relationships, inviting people into your darkest places is the safest place you can ever live.” “Leaders that are failing at home probably aren't failing because they have zero time at home; they're probably failing at home because they aren't using the time they have wisely.” “Greatness is not achieved by setting goals; greatness is achieved by committing to disciplines that lead to accomplished goals.”
As young church leaders, we are often so quick to flock to the hip, influential pastor of the biggest mega church. But what we desperately need is to seek out the priceless wisdom offered by generations of leaders who have gone before us. In this episode, Pastor Gordon MacDonald shares his experiences as a pastor of more than 40 years, as well as his insight for where he believes church leadership is headed. Here are some of the main ideas from this episode: When faced with new situations, learn to decode the culture and understand what is important to people. Otherwise, you'll miss them by a mile. In the context of ministry, New England is unique in several ways: • Connectedness to the local community – this same connection is expected in church • New Englanders are not impressed with size – they don't want church to get too big and impersonal • There is an edge of arrogance to New Englanders – they uphold education and history We are being brought up in a culture that says the more influence you have, the more successful you will be. This way of thinking is different from the past, where people were taught to be humble and grateful with what they had. The message we hear today is that when we trust Jesus, he will make you successful, but we cannot forget that real success can also come in the form of persecution. This truth is becoming less relevant in today's culture. Today's generations crave personal attention. The only way to reach a broken people is through transparency. People don't want to run from tradition because there is a richness in tradition. We're going to miss something if we chase after new and forget the old. Generations today are lacking personal and as a result, they are looking at the past and how things were done then. Gordon MacDonald is the Chancellor of Denver Seminary and has previously served as spiritual advisor and mentor to President Bill Clinton. He has written over two dozen books, including Ordering Your Private World and Going Deep: Becoming a Person of Influence. He and his wife, Gail, live in Concord, New Hampshire. This is a Bonus Episode of All In. Be sure to check out the podcast. Subscribe in iTunes. If you find this helpful, please share it with your family and friends. Time management is a myth. No matter what you do, you will never have more than 24 hours in your day. You cannot stretch it out. You cannot shrink it down. Time is stubborn like that. It is what it is. Trust me, I know. I have been obsessive about time management ever sense I read Stephen Covey’s “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” back in the 1980s. After thirty years of trying to manage my time, I have faced the cold, hard truth: Time management is a myth. And this truth is liberating. Once I exchanged the myth of time management for the realities of time, my life entered a new level of empowerment. Let me share with you 5 Realities of Time. Time is your friend. By “friend” I mean we should not see time is something we work against, as in “working against the clock.” Time is something we work with to accomplish our goals and to live out our values. Time is our friend because time supports our need for family, friends, work, restoration, and creativity. Time gives us room for all the things that are valuable to us. Time makes a place for all these. If we miss out on the people we love and the things we value, it is not because time ran out on us: Time is always there. Your focus may have run out. Your attention may have run out. Your ability to prioritize may have run out. But time did not run out. Time is a true friend; it is always there (at least until Jesus returns). Time is your accountability partner. Time looks at all the people you love and all the things you value and goals you want to accomplish and asks a simple question, “When?” When are you going to be with those you love? When are you going to do this task? When are you going to live out this value? Time management is a myth. I do not manage time: Time manages me. Time is your sponsor. Sponsors make it possible for people to do what they love and enjoy. It may be Coca-Cola sponsoring your favorite TV shows or Red Bull sponsoring the X Games, sponsors make things happen. Time says to us, "You have a life to live, a purpose to pursue, and people to love, I will fully sponsor you. I will give you 24 hours every day to live, to love, to learn, and to leave a legacy. Now go for. I am on your side." What you do with that sponsorship is up to you. Time is your great equalizer. Some people have more money, friends, connections, opportunities, and talent than you. But no one has more time than you. Some people have less money, friends, connections, opportunities, and talent than you. But no one has less time than you. You may measure time with a Rolex or Timex but the time is still the same. Time is no respecter of persons. Kings and queens, peasants and poppers have all been made equal in time. You can buy friends, cars, homes, watches, and food, but try as you may, you will never buy more time. Each day remains stubbornly entrenched with 24 hours. No more. No less. Time is the greatest equalizer. You have not been cheated, nor have you been granted more than others. Time is the one resource God has determined all will have in equal portion. Time management is a myth. You do not manage your time, you manage your life. Time is the canvas upon which you paint the masterpiece of your life. You are the artist. Your life is your art. Time is your canvas. Your values are the colors you paint with. Your choices are your brush strokes. “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Ps 90:12 This life, this one life, is all you have. Make it your masterpiece, your magnum opus. What are you waiting for? It’s your life. Now, go live it!
