Brian Zahnd is a pastor from Saint Joseph, Missouri, whose own thought journey mirrors that of many libertarian Christians: away from neoconservatism and nationalism, and towards skepticism of empire and the pursuit of peace. Though he doesn't self-identify as a libertarian and we have some differences, Zahnd's work does have substantial overlap with LCI's as it relates to militarism, nationalism, and how we view the kingdoms of the world.(Re-Mastered for Re-Issue.)Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com

TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, they kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Are you ready for some theological fun? Watch one of the greatest living Biblical scholars tell 450 day-drinking progressive Christians how cool the Biblical Paul was. This is a live podcast with John Dominic Crossan from Theology Beer Camp. It was a ton of fun and will give you a taste of what goes down at camp. If you want to hang with us this year in Denver, head over here and get your info. If you want some more time with Dom Crossan, then join our upcoming class on the Historical Jesus. John Dominic Crossan is an Irish-American biblical scholar with two-year post-doctoral diplomas in exegesis from Rome's Pontifical Biblical Institute and in archeology from Jerusalem's École Biblique. He has been a mendicant friar and a catholic priest, a Co-Chair of the Jesus Seminar, and a President of the Society of Biblical Literature. His focus, whether scholarly or popular, in books, videos, or lectures, is on the historical Jesus as the norm and criterion for the entire Christian Bible. His reconstructed Jesus incarnates nonviolent resistance to the Romanization of his Jewish homeland and future hope of a transformed world and transfigured earth. Crossan's method is to situate biblical texts within the reconstructed matrix of their own genre and purpose, their own time and place, and to hear them accurately for then before accepting or rejecting them for now. Jesus was deeply committed to the Hebrew scriptures. In his view, every word of the Old Testament carried the power and authority of God himself. Yet Jesus also seemed to read the scriptures in a way that was different from the bible teachers of his day. Join us as we try to discover what it means for Jesus to fulfil the law and the prophets.
Last week we saw that the flourishing life that Jesus is describing and inviting us to is founded on the authoritative word of God fulfilled in Christ, interpreted by Him, and applied in and through Him. This week we take a closer look at how to interpret and apply His word in our lives.
As Jesus continues his Sermon on the Mount, we will see how he views the Bible and how that impacts how we read and relate to the Old Testament today.

To begin a conversation about sexuality and marriage, we invited Andy Robinson (Training Director of Living Out) to speak to us. In this first of two sessions, he shared some of his personal story and look at what the Bible has to say about sexuality and marriage. Andy was a pastor for 19 years and now works part-time leading a ministry training course in Oxford alongside working with Living Out. Surprisingly, he enjoys talking personally about issues of sexuality – being able to say that God's grace is sufficient in our weakness. He describes himself as a northerner in exile and still insists that there is no 'r' in the pronunciation of bath.

All structures need a solid foundation to stand. If the foundation is weak or cracked, the building will come down when stress hits. Our lives are similar. Everything looks great until stress, doubts, and overwhelming life demands hit us. The foundation of our lives has to be solid to support us in difficult times. What is your foundation? This series will explore three parts to a solid foundation for a follower of Jesus: The Bible, The Good News, and Prayer.

We review and apply the revival prayer in Nehemiah 8 and 9. We hear the hearts of believers poured out in worship, thanksgiving, confession, and intercession. We also see God's name is lifted up, His will is acknowledged, along with the dependence all God's children is expressed. Because you might say why to pray and why worship? It's because our God is creator, Savior, faithful Sovereign, the supplier of all we need, we pray, we worship, and we bow down. As it says in James and Peter, we humble ourselves because our sin is great and because deservedly so, we are in great distress. More importantly, we pray from our distress because our Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is a great God, and there is no other. He is the only true God who hears and acts in His compassionate, loving Holy will. To God be the glory, great things He has done! And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" Brians tells his own story of theological deconstruction and how he had a fresh encounter with Jesus through it all. We then talk quite a bit about the relationship between Jesus and the Bible. Is the Bible the foundation of our faith? Or is Jesus? Or both? And what happens when people equate a fundamentalist view of Scripture and doctrine with Christianity? The Bible is our tutor in prayer; we learn most effectively by listening to the prayers of the saints who comprise our great cloud of witnesses. In this episode, we see revival and the pattern elements and pathos of prayer. Nehemiah 8:4-8 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, explained the law to the people while the people remained in their place. 8 And they read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading. What happens next may surprise you… balance of probabilities not, since the Book of Nehemiah is no stranger to God's people. And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" Caleb Drahosh All of Scripture contains hints and shadows and whispers about Jesus. The Jews didn't understand that just like John the Baptist spoke of Jesus, so Moses wrote about Jesus because Jesus and Scripture are inseparable. Jesus even goes as far as to say that those who do not receive Him do not love God. We come to know Jesus through Scripture––He is seen everywhere in God's Word––and what the Jews missed, has been clearly revealed to us.
Ever feel like life is out of control? Like you can't catch up? Like your thoughts and emotions are out of control? In this week's episode, we talk about how we run the race of life at a sustainable pace, and how God's word helps us know how to do that. Resources mentioned in this episode: Ordering Your Private World, a book by Gordon MacDonald Get Your Life Back, a sermon series with free resources by Carey Nieuwhof at Connexus Church Life Giving List, a free resource from Steve Cuss Scriptures mentioned in this episode: Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 How to follow Jesus: The Bible tells us we must receive salvation through faith: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) We must understand God's great love for us: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17) We must declare this truth out loud over our life: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10) We must be willing to repent from our sins and turn to Jesus: Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord (Acts 3:19) You must be willing to leave your old life behind: lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. (Ephesians 4:22-24) You must be willing to take up your cross: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24) You will live a new life in Christ! Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17) You must live in step with the Spirit: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:24-25) Keep faith alive: read your Bible, pray daily, join a church, serve other people and keep listening to podcasts that will help you grow! Thanks for listening to This Divine Moment.

What You'll Hear: Mark Driscoll was born in North Dakota and grew up in Seattle, WA. His Mom was a born again Catholic and loved Jesus but Mark did not. Mark's girlfriend gave him a Bible and he started reading it when he went to college. In his Freshman year, he was on a men's retreat on a walk by himself and God spoke to him audibly and told him to marry Grace, preach the Bible, train men, and plant churches. He's been married 26 years and they have 5 kids He pastors at Trinity Church in Scottsdale, AZ Don't chase signs and wonders, chase Jesus The Bible is the most widely translated, most widely published and least read book there is "I'm in the Bible every day because I like it" "I can hear from God through His Word any time I want" "You cannot consider one minute in God's Word as a wasted minute" "Jesus' life is admired by Christians and non-Christians, the question is can His life be experienced by God's people?" "Sometimes the Trinity is portrayed as the Father is the mean one, Jesus is the nice one and the Holy Spirit is the weird one... actually they live together in relationship and it's the Holy Spirit who empowers the life of Jesus" God wants us to appreciate the life of Jesus and to experience it There are several misconceptions about Jesus including that Jesus is an alien which keep us from modeling our lives after Jesus "Most people see Jesus as perfect but don't understand how He overcame temptation" Clark Kent pretended to be like us, but Jesus truly was like us "When you understand Jesus relates to you, it becomes a lot easier for you to relate to Jesus" Most of the creeds skip over Jesus' entire life. Jesus had to learn and grow because He set aside the continuous use of His divine attributes There's a difference between sin and trial and error Jesus experienced 12 different lanes of relationships as we do It's very important for us to forgive as Jesus did, it pushes the demonic out of your life Men have a performance mentality at their work God said He was pleased with Jesus before He did anything Our relationship with God starts with His approval and then we work from that not for that Work is worship. Jesus spent the first 30 years of His life swinging a hammer with His Dad. This was sacred work because He was doing the will of God Doing your job well is part of your ministry If we are faithful with the work that we do, God super-naturally open opportunities for us to share our faith Sometimes people are looking for our character before they want us to hear our testimony 2 Cor 5:21 is one of Mark's favorite verses See God as a relational father who loves and enjoys His children Contact www.markdriscoll.org for free Bible teaching

Brian Zahnd is a pastor from Saint Joseph, Missouri, whose own thought journey mirrors that of many libertarian Christians: away from neoconservatism and nationalism, and towards skepticism of empire and the pursuit of peace. Though he doesn't self-identify as a libertarian and we have some differences, Zahnd's work does have substantial overlap with LCI's as it relates to militarism, nationalism, and how we view the kingdoms of the world. Today, Zahnd joins Doug and Jason as they discuss these themes. We also talk about his forthcoming book, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God.

As apprentices of Jesus, we are well aware at the broken condition of the world in light of God’s design and purposes. This is particularly evident when we consider this whole topic of sexuality. The question is - how do we (the church) function as a redemptive presence in the midst of this brokenness? Surely, as the presence of Christ in the earth, we should have the same approach that he took...
According to the bible, sexuality is lived out uniquely in two parallel walks of life - singleness and marriage. Strangely, our over-sexualized culture frowns on BOTH. Come and explore how Jesus, himself, initiates a radical understanding and legitimacy for both of these ways of life and what implications it has to our personal sexuality and the way that we foster community as a reflection of the Kingdom of God. In this sermon, Pastor Nathan refers to several other resources to follow up on: Sermons on Divorce: Part 1 or Part 2
Very few would argue against the fact that sexuality is tied (somehow) to love. Our in-built impulse towards intimacy (aka our human sexuality) is constantly driving us to draw near to others. Where does this drive originate from and what type of love will enable humans to flourish? Certainly our culture’s pigeon-holed view of sexuality as erotic cannot be the answer to the question - for we find our hyper-sexualized world to be one of marked isolation and relational breakdown.
As we embark on a 4-week conversation about sexuality, we need to realize the limp that we carry into the conversation as people who have been formed within the story that our world tells us about sexuality. Thankfully, we aren’t left to flounder in a world of confusion around such matters. Jesus has entered into the story to model a life of sexuality that tells an alternative story - the Kingdom of God.

Can anything separate us from the love of Jesus? The Bible declares, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from His love. Jesus wants to be one with us and share His glory. He came that we may have life and have it abundantly. [ "Indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:39 ]
In part two of our series on politics we wrestle with a number of practical issues. What has God called the church to do that the government can't do? What are some practical issues that Christians need to wrestle with as they prepare to vote?...
There are few topics that seem to be as divisive in this country as politics. As we get closer to a national election many Christians are wrestling with a number of questions. What should our involvement in politics be? What kind of candidate should...
(High Holy Days 2012)(Josh Sofaer - Jews for Jesus)The Bible is all about the Messiah. All scripture is true. The line of communication with God is open to everyone. The Good News is that the Word became flesh; the Messiah died for our sins, and we are invited to know Him.
Message #4 of 30 – SERIES: Revelation of Jesus Have you ever suffered for Jesus? The Bible is clear that suffering is the norm for those who follow Jesus, and if we're not suffering now we should be prepared for it when it comes. Revelation 2:8-11 records some of what Jesus has to say about suffering.
Someone has said: "Life is a search for a voice we can trust - a single voice that puts all other voices into quiet perspective, a voice that settles the loudness around us and speaks peacefully, yet clearly and confidently. A voice we can follow." What the Bible tells us is that in Jesus Christ we have that voice we can follow.
