Our MOM were both defensive selections, and that's a positive thing. Goals from Martinelli and Saka (called an own goal) were the goals for the 2-0 win. Simplify Your Sales and Business meetings. Lisa Thal is an Author, Speaker, and Business Coach. She has over 35 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience. She wrote the book "Three Word Meetings."  Lisa coaches leaders on simplifying sales and business meetings with fun and interesting 3-word  topics to get your sales team motivated and inspired.   Episode 151, Why Moms are good for business!   Today's podcast is for hard-working moms who sacrifice so much for others. I thought I would share Mom Thal's impact on my career and six business tips I learned from her.     Time Management. Clean up your room! Anyone heard this growing up. Who knew cleaning up your room would come into play in the business world. It is an aspect of any successful business career. Most moms do more before 9 am than many do before 5 pm. Get the kids up, make breakfast and pack their lunch; oh yeah, make their lunch, get dressed, and be on time for work. Being organized and managing the day is a critical skill. We spend our days Task Switching from one project to the next. So it's essential to know where everything is so you don't lose valuable time.    Learn How to Negotiate. I am one of eight kids, and the story that stays with me is when we would go to Wendy's after playing in a sporting event as a special treat. Our Mom would give us each $2.00 to buy something. I would want a hamburger, fry, and frosty, but $2.00 was not enough. So my sisters and I would do some critical thinking and negotiate with each other. I would buy the fries, and they would purchase the frosty, and we would share. It was a Win-Win situation—all of us walking away happy and satisfied. Critical thinking and how to negotiate what you want is a learned skill that is important in the business world.     Get Back up after you fall. Learning from your shortfalls is a critical skill for anyone in business. We all learned to walk for the first time. We would fall and get back up and try again. The same applies to our business. We may have a client cancel and, through your career, face disappointments. But we must get back up and move forward. We have an opportunity to learn from every experience. Our business is a process, just like learning to walk. We crawl, we walk, we run! Moms encourage us to do the same with our business. Follow your process to success and understand that you will face some setbacks and rejections. Learn from each experience and keep getting back up. Or, as some moms say," What doesn't kill you will make you stronger."   Manage Crisis When you didn't feel well growing up, who did you want to call? I wanted my Mom. There was something about telling her that made me feel better.  My mother-in-law's favorite quote: " This too shall pass," comes to mind when facing tough business decisions, some in our control and some not. In business, you have to manage through a crisis at times. We just did the past few years- Covid and now inflation. But we make adjustments and work through it.     Relationships Matter. My Mom is 91 and what I watched over her career is that relationships are essential in life and business. The best business advice Mom Thal taught me is that relationships matter. She created and nurtured her work relationships and her friendships. When we talk about relationships and friendships, she always says, "To have a good friend, you must be one." Wise words I have applied to my relationships with someone I admire so much. The same applies to our business. We need to build trust, listen to our client's needs, and create solutions for their biggest challenges.    Say Thank you! My Mom taught me to say Thank you! If you want to stand out from your competition, take the extra time to write a handwritten thank you. Let the prospect and your client know how much you appreciated your conversation with them and their time. Sending notes of appreciation to those you lead will impact them because everyone wants to know they matter. Taking the time to communicate that with them will pay big dividends.   I want to say thank you and Happy Mothers Day to all the moms, mentors, leaders, managers, and coaches who impact those around them. Moms, know that you are making a difference in your kids' lives, friendships, co-workers, and business partners. The moms I work alongside are my friends, clients, and sisters. And those moms that are physically no longer with us, like My Mother In Law, Olivia, you are missed.  Today we celebrate you!   If you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, rate it, or subscribe for Free on Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.   Learn more about Simplifying Your sales meetings using 3-word topics at http://www.threewordmeetings.com.

As for the 3rd brother who shall not be named he has 51 weeks to figure it out on a mustache. Despite being a disappointing year for most, 2020 brought us Our Mom's Favorite Podcast and for that we're thankful.

Is Mothers Day a traumatizing experience for you every year because your relationship with your mom is not so great?  If so, there's a chance you'll relate to what we talk about here.  In this episode, we celebrate "Children of Bad Mothers Day." We get very personal and very specific about the trauma our own Mom has caused us and the complicated feelings we have for her as a result. We recognize the complexity of human beings, and we know that "bad mom" is an oversimplification. Our Mom, like many mothers who end up causing their children pain, has reasons for the way that she is. Yeah, of course, "hurt people hurt people" and all that. However, we believe that parents have a responsibility not to dump the trauma they've been through on their kids. What our Mom has been through isn't her fault, but that does not give her the right to make it our problem. The importance of "breaking the cycle" is especially true for parents, but it's also true for humans in general. The fact that we've been abused does not justify our abuse of others. This was a tough conversation for both of us, but we're glad we had it. Hopefully, you'll find something meaningful for yourself while sorting through our baggage! [TRIGGER WARNINGS: domestic violence, repressed memories, parental neglect, victim blaming, sexual abuse, rape, generational trauma, emotional incest, child abuse, poverty, and gaslighting] Show Notes Doug's coffee for the week was Ecuador Lojas from Heartwood Coffee Roasters. This is a special bonus episode of When Life Gives You Parkinson’s which we are calling “Extra Dosage.” Full episodes will be release every other Wednesday. In between, Niki and I will share new information, original interviews and extra material that provide more context to topics raised in the previous episodes of the podcast. We’ll also answer your questions. Feel free to write us with questions at parkinsonspod@curiouscast.ca. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in August 2017. I haven’t seen my brothers Bruce and Dan or my sister Tracy since I received the news. That changed on January 31, 2019. Our Mom, who lives in Florida, invited us all down to stay in a beach house on Anna Marie Island on the Gulf Coast near Tampa. My siblings arrived separately along with some of their kids who now have their own kids. There were 18 of us in total. I was nervous. We haven’t vacationed together in 20 years. When we do get together for holidays or special events it is separated by years and we’re only together for a few hours at a time. And still, inevitably, someone ends up crying. But even before the family reunion part, I was nervous about flying. Vancouver B.C. to Tampa, Florida with a stop in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a long stretch of flying. I was concerned about timing my medication correctly as we skipped through time zones. I was certain my feet and legs would cramp and stiffen on the flight. This would be my first time traveling with walking sticks. And what if I start to tremor? What if I have an anxiety attack in the airport? What if… Deep breath. I can tell you now the anticipation was far more anxious than the trip. Everything was great. Here’s how I handled the airport. I wanted to be comfortable and confident, so I wore layers of loose fitting clothing including a shirt with a pocket for easy access to my passport and boarding pass. I used a backpack for carry-on items including a book, phone chargers, water, healthy snacks, and lots of Levodopa. (Do not pack your meds in checked baggage. I was happy to have it with me when we ran into seven hours of delays on our return trip.) Anytime I am in crowds, I use my walking sticks, so they came along for the ride too. When we checked in at the airline counter, I alerted them that I have Parkinson’s and would like to have a wheel chair or golf cart assistance at my layover in Minneapolis. I wanted to make sure I made the connection and didn’t exhaust myself traversing through four concourses. I also traveled with my wife and son, which gave me extra eyes and ears and peace of mind if I lost focus or became disoriented maneuvering the airport hallways and crowds. We always opted to pre-board to take extra time to get on board and get settled. Once on the plane, I sat in the aisle seat to give myself quick access to stand up if I started to feel cramping or an urgent need to use the facilities. I collapsed my walking sticks and put them in the overhead storage. I stretched my feet and legs as much as possible during the flight and drank water to stay hydrated. The days we flew were long days, and my pill schedule was out of whack a bit, but I was able to take it in stride and slept like a baby each of those nights. The reunion was great. Lots of stories, laughter and reconnecting. On this episode, you’ll hear more of my journey to Florida including a stop at Universal Studios and our attempt to get an Attraction Assistance Pass (AAP) to avoid long lines and a discussion with my brothers, sister and me. I ask them what it’s like seeing me in the flesh with Parkinson’s, how PD has impacted them and their families, and we try to recalibrate our relationships with each other. They also pepper me with a couple behind the scenes podcast questions you might enjoy.  If you have a comment or question about the podcast, you can email us:parkinsonspod@curiouscast.ca Follow me, Larry Gifford  Twitter: @ParkinsonsPod Facebook: Facebook.com/ParkinsonsPod Instagram: @parkinsonspod Follow Co-host and Producer Niki Reitmayer Twitter: @Niki_Reitmayer Special thanks to Bruce Gifford, Dan Gifford, Tracy Cherry, Marty Gifford, and Rebecca Gifford For more info on our partner Parkinson Canada head to http://www.parkinson.ca/ The toll free hotline 1-800-565-3000 Or follow them on Twitter Parkinson Canada            @ParkinsonCanada Parkinson Society BC      @ParkinsonsBC Credits Dila Velazquez – Story Producer Rob Johnston – Senior Audio Producer

It’s the big one guys! Over the last few weeks, I’ve been super excited to introduce you to some of the people that have really helped shape who I am over the last decade. So I couldn’t think of a better way to finish the series than by inviting my very own sister, Emily Kelly, onto the podcast! Emily takes you on the journey of some of our life experiences and shows you how I’ve become the person and businesswoman I am today... and to dish the dirt on everything about me that only a sister can know! We’re very lucky to be in such a special relationship. I’m also super excited to let you know that Emily is now part of the Organize 365 Team. She is running the Sunday Basket® Workshop Organizer Certification Program.   Entrepreneurship Runs In Our Family We grew up in a 100% entrepreneurial family so the idea of working for someone else was just never entertained. For us, we were taught that you either owned the company or you started one from scratch. On the podcast, Emily takes us back to when she was 3 years old to the story of her first friend whose mom owned a home goods shop in the valley and our Mom who was running her business from our basement. Every day, they’d play "shops" with the little guest checks or receipts lying around from both homes. It was that or trading stickers. It’s all we’d ever known. Everywhere we went, we were pretending we were in business. It was so much fun! By contrast, since I was 4 years older, I was often out babysitting and dreaming of the day I’d become a mom! To picture the scene, we grew up in a neighborhood in Akron with no traffic (or sidewalks!) and there were very few children. It meant that we had to make our own fun. I’ll never forget the day Emily and her friend set up a lemonade stand outside the house. Entrepreneurism was everywhere for us, but it’s lovely to reflect on the fact that we learned business from different perspectives because of our ages. Our Mom’s Business Emily loves that we’re both true to form with the women on mom’s side of the family when it comes to business minds. We have inherited the attitude of "I have an idea and it’s going to sell." Our grandma mailed fabric all over the world so people could make their own clothes. Grandma Green had a flower shop, and our mom’s idea grew while working for a clothing business. Emily and I have such fun recalling the stories of mom and grandma taking clothes for a huge end-of-season event to Cleveland to maximize sales in the 1970’s/80’s. Everyone helped with it. Mom saw potential right away. Many people were being successful with the trunk parties, but no one had the undergarments. Cue mom! She literally got on a plane to New York, went to a show, and started buying lingerie. She had slips coming out of her ears! It was an old-school direct sales business that she’d created on her own. Emily says that just blows her away! It reminds me of when I got on the plane to Dallas and asked the manufacturer to produce my Sunday Basket® for me. Mom grew the business to where she had women working for her in 26 states when she sold it just a few years later. It was an amazing achievement with lots of reinvestment. We are both so similar in the way we approach business today because of how she was. White Gloves, Party Manners & Favorite Games Emily and I recall how when we were young, we took etiquette classes to learn all about silverware and to get our slips out for formal dinners (slips feature heavily in our childhood!). We also learned how to get out of a car in a skirt. I often wondered, would any of this help me see the royal family? We’re both BIG royals. I would have put being Queen on my list of jobs to be when I grew up if I could. I can’t wait for the royal wedding and new royal baby this year! We did love to play lots and lots of games when we were growing up, too. We came up with all sorts of games. By far, our favorite was one we made up called "big friend." Visit the blog post here to view a short video of Emily and I sharing our memories of the game. Entrepreneurism Ran In Our Dad’s Family, Too Our dad was no exception to entrepreneurism. Sales was his strength and Dad’s company had over 100 employees. His father and grandfather had a coffee company. Our father’s company in Akron that he eventually became co-owner of was called Alcon Tool. Dad’s enthusiasm for manufacturing made us fall in love with the industry. Dad’s ethos on work is something that stays with us both today. It doesn’t matter what role you play in the team, everyone is equally important. That’s what I’m trying to grow at Organize 365. Dad’s Passing Our father passed away 10 years ago just before he was 61. On the podcast episode, Emily and I reflect on this most upsetting time in our lives. We talk about how it was kind to put us both as executors, but not practical. We found our own roles and formed a strong team at a difficult time. Growing Independently It’s true that we had a privileged upbringing in both education and financial support, but in every single generation, the businesses that our families grew started from scratch. There was no inheritance, but just a great idea and the determination to succeed. Dad started life as a salesman and left as a partner. When I reflect back, my best advice would be to take a look at what you have and not what everyone else has. I’m successful and I’m very blessed, but I work really hard. I want to give back as much as possible, but I create zero excuses for myself. Having my husband Greg working allowed me to start Organize 365, but Emily is a very successful single woman. So it’s not your spouse that makes or breaks you. Think about the "something" you were uniquely created to do and give it to the world. Every reason why you’re not pursuing it is an excuse. Take what’s in your way and get rid of excuses to move forward. This podcast is about our family highlights because it’s all about encouraging and inspiring you. When you focus on the positives, opportunities become bigger and brighter and you can chase them. If you focus on what could have been, things look darker and it’s harder to chase your goals. Creative Memories The time when Emily and I worked for Creative Memories was a super exciting time in both our lives. Replacing my teaching salary with direct sales so I could stay at home with my family was my dream and I was going to do everything I could to get there. My dad helped me decide on Creative Memories. We both felt it had a big reach... it turns out we were right! As Emily says, I joined and went straight to the top! Emily was one of my great customers and after turning me down initially, I finally managed to get her to sign up, too. She went straight to the top as well! We built teams and were in the top 6% performers of the company. We take a lot of what we learned in those days with us now to run a fun community workshop feel. Emily & I As A Team Again This brings us to today and where Emily and I find ourselves in the organizational realm. Although it’s not the most profitable, I’m staying with the home and paper organization, as it’s the area where I feel I can recreate the community buzz of Creative Memories. I’m constantly pivoting and moving forward to create this feeling in your house and at our workshops. It’s awesome to have Emily on board to run the Sunday Basket® Workshop Organizer Certification Program. Prices go up on April 1st so get in touch with Emily to talk about the next steps as soon as you can. We’d love to have you on the team! Emily and I see the vision of bringing people together all over the world. It’s a space where you can share experiences and move forward from them. No one should feel alone and that’s why the workshop model works so well. Emily is so excited to be on board and she feels just like she did when we worked together at Creative Memories. For her, we’ve never been better than then as a team. I love Emily and so will you, I am sure! To find out more about the Sunday Basket® Workshop Certified Organizer Program, click here.
