This is the 22rd episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. How many times has Moominpappa gone off with the Hattifatteners? Are they really as wicked as they're cracked up to be? What does the birch bark scroll mean? Hop along and find out none of the answers to these questions! This is supposed to be a story about the Hattifatteners, but it might more appropriately be named: The Feelings and Projections that Moominpappa has about the Hattifatteners. Which is a bit disappointing for Hattifattener fans but it's still a pretty good story! Dave's done some serious research into queer species in the Moomins, and Hattifatteners as cyborgs in particular. Nina's got a super bumper natural history corner about birch bark and parthenogenic mothers, with additional rustling sound effects. There's a maths corner too, which is unlikely to happen again. Have we all got our little pieces of birch bark in hand? Good, now we'll begin. Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are Thistle & Thyme: Tales and Legends from Scotland by Sorche Nic Leodhas, and The Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance on Netflix. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Research Hole.
This is the 23rd episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. And just like that, it's the end of the season! We're going out on a story that actually shows us what happens when someone has a problem and wonders "What would Snufkin do?" Sniff is inconsolable over the loss of his favourite toy, a small dog called Cedric, with bejewelled eyes (?!). Even Moominmamma can't help him, so he wanders down to Snufkin's camp and gets told a story. It's a very classic story-shape about belongings not making you happy, but you know what we say? There's nothing wrong with playing the hits well! This story is a real two-hander between Snufkin and Sniff. It really wouldn't be the same without Sniff's many, pertinent, exasperating interruptions. We have a go at filling some plot holes, like: when did Sniff get back from wherever it was he went? Who gave him the toy dog, and why did this put jewels in its eyes? Next season we'll be reading the Moomin comics, so dig out your copies if you want to read along! Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander and Tales of Uncle Remus: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit by Julius Lester. Dave has sneaked three (three!) Spirits of the Podgoblin's hat in this season finale to keep you going until we get back: Cane and Rinse, Girl Mode and Rainbow Road.
This is the twentieth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Is this the underrated best story in this collection? We really think it might be. What can a Hemulen tell us about work under capitalism? Will any of us ever get to be pensioned off? This is a beautiful story about introversion, access needs and the dangers of sharing your most secret desires with your relatives. IT BANGS LIKE A DRUM. And it generated a lot of conversation for us, during which we referenced Shy Radicals by Hamja Ahsan, Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber, and The World Is Not Ending by Sophie From Mars. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Moira's Pen by Megan Whalen Turner and The Rob Auton Daily Podcast. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Wilder.
This is the twenty-first episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we're reading one of Tove's most famous short stories: The Invisible Child. It's a pretty bright and funny story with very dark themes. We both like it, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype, for us. Little My is picking poisonous mushrooms (what else is new?), Moomintroll is an ass, and Moominmamma is a confirmed witch. It's a good one for cameos of Too-Ticky, and vengeance on fathers. We've got quite the fungus-based Natural History/Translation chat. We talk about whether bashing coldly ironical types in the head is even any use. Justice for people with hair colours that aren't black or yellow! There is a deep dive into Nina's ginger experience, and the way gingers, particularly ginger girls, are represented in kids' fiction. Our Spirits of the Moomins are The Little Prince by Saint Exupery, as read by Peter Ustinov, and Where the Wild Ladies Are, by Matsuda Aoko and translated by Polly Barton. Dave's Spirit of the Moomins is The White Pube website and podcast, particularly their video game reviews.
This is the seventeenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Carrying on with our read-through of Tales from Moomin Valley, our story this week is A Tale of Horror! But don't get too excited. The scariest thing about it is the Whomper's daddy. This story, despite not being our favourite, gave us lots to yap about. We talked about how stories about lying affect children's truthfulness, shifting standards in kid lit regarding discipline, in particular corporal punishment, and shared some stories about our own flexible relationships to the truth as children. Our Spirits of the Moomins are The Sister Who Ate her Brothers by Jen Campbell, and the film Turning Red. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is The Newbery Tart podcast.
This is the eighteenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we're reading The Fillyjonk Who Believed in disasters, certified banger no matter who you ask! It's a melancholy, funny, poignant story that feels almost too real. Join us as we relate a little too closely and discuss the anxiety and depression of this poor Fillyjonk. We talk about the beauty and liberation of destruction, bombed out cathedrals, and monastic lifestyles. Do we ever really learn from these experiences, or is it an endless cycle? Plus special Natural History Investigations. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Stories by Firelight by Shirley Hughes and Campaign 2 of the actual play D&D show Critical Role. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Bookwandering with Anna James.
This is the sixteenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. The crocuses are up, the cherry trees are in bloom, and Snufkin is tramping back to Moomin Valley - it must be time for our spring miniseries! We're kicking off with this beautiful, perfectly formed gem of a short story from the collection Tales from Moomin Valley. It's a story about creativity, inspiration, song writing, and how big you need to be to get a name. We namecheck a lot of books in this one! A non exhaustive list: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes. Our Spirits of the Moomins are The Girl Who Helped Thunder and Other Native American Stories by James Bruchac and Joseph Bruchac, and the songs of Regina Spektor. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Song by Song.
This is the 3rd bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're popping in with something a little different for you this week, it's a video game review! That's right, we're almost topical! Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is a beautiful, relaxing, not quite open world exploration of Moomin Valley through the eyes and musical instruments of Snufkin. We discuss the way it feels, the way it looks, the way it sounds. Dave has some nitpicks. We wonder how canon the good ship SnufMin is to these game developers. Did the Groke really break Nina's Switch?! Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are games. Nina's is Untitled Goose Game and Dave's is Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna). Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is The End of the World Book Club.
This is the story of the creation of an artwork that is destined to be a part of our Magic Skagit for many years to come: Valley or Our Spirits. In this podcast episode I speak with artist and Upper Skagit Elder Jay Bowen about what is arguably the most recognized piece of public art in Mount Vernon, given its location in the city's riverside plaza. We discuss the artwork's inspiration, the collaboration between Jay, metal sculptor Milo White, and glass artist Lin McJunkin in bringing it to life, and the message Jay hopes people will take away from what is not simply a piece of art, but a dose of medicine.
Let's start with the basics: Hard Truth is putting out some incredible ryes from Indiana. And none of it came from MGP. There's so much more, though. Using a sweet mash technique, Hard Truth is developing ryes, bourbons, and finished whiskies, always with an eye to standing out. They've got a 325-acre property on which you can stay, taste, tour, make your own moonshine, and "get lost" adventures. Hard Truth also puts its money where its mouth is by using local grain and honoring the farmers. It's latest endeavor partners Hard Truth with the Mellencamp family, producing four editions of the Harvest Rye to showcase the farmers' skills through the final product. You might debate sweet vs. sour mash or what an "Indiana" rye is (there's a designation for that now, btw) but the Hard Truth is undeniable: visit and taste and you'll love what you have. River Roots Barrel Company, out of Cleveland, Ohio, has been making some serious waves in the whiskey world. Their hazmat proof bottlings on Seelbach's flew off the virtual shelves, and the upcoming port barrel bourbon is on my to-do list as soon as it's live. As always, though, there's more to the story, including partnerships with barrel brokers and celebrity chef Michael Symon. At first glance, River Roots seems like an independent bottler, but they're really doing more than that. Like Lost Lantern and some of Gene Nassif's work, they're blending, finishing, and playing with the bourbon, with great results so far. The Cuhayoga River once caught fire - we know it, they know it - here's hoping River Roots, with the Cleveland crew, keeps catching fire as well. There's lots of good whiskey that will come from it. Nelson's Green Brier Distillery - NGB for short - has been around for quite a while. It's older than Jack and George, and at one time produced more than both of those by several magnitudes. And then, like so many others (and unlike its younger peers), Prohibition put an end to Charles Nelson's distillery, which his wife Louisa led for 18 years after his passing and until statewide Prohibition in 1909. NGB was then lost to history and nature for around 90 years. Then, by a fluke, Andy, Charles, and their dad went to a butcher. That butcher...well, you'll hear the story in the episode. Today, Nelson's is quickly becoming a go-to spot in Nashville and a fast-rising Tennessee Whiskey. After touring the facility and trying some of their whiskies, it's clear they're earning the legacy of DSP-5. Gone are the days when Belle Meade was the flagship, sourced while their own whiskies were aging. Now, Nelson's Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey and the Nelson Bros. line are taking center stage. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Andy for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! A Boot Hill is a burial ground for the unclaimed, the poorest, and those hanged for misdeeds. For some, a Boot Hill was necessary - it got them the first few steps to heaven. And Dodge City, the fabled town of the old west, has the original Boot Hill. Boot Hill Distillery isn't located on top of the hill, exactly (it's quite close), but it is built on those stories. Images of Wyatt Earp and other famous lawmen and outlaws grace their bottles while the whiskies are made with grains grown as close nearby as possible. The brand is, after nearly a decade, still relatively young. Its whiskies are maturing, and its focus on wheat - the staple crop of Kansas - is bearing fruit in what's already out. We go through the founding story, how elements of the old west and the rich history are interwoven into the bourbon, wheat whiskey, and other spirits, and where Boot Hill is going from here. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Lee for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Sangam World Whisky is the newest release from the Rampur line of Indian whiskies. While there is some Rampur distillate in there, this is much more - a blend of Indian, European, and New World whiskies into a cohesive, slightly smoky (unusual for the Rampur lineup), and highly enjoyable bottling that expands what you may think about Indian whisky into a new category altogether. The idea, while exciting, is not new to Rampur. Back towards its founding 70+ years ago, Rampur had a whisky blend that brought together Indian single malt with grain whisky from the UK to create an easy drinker loved for decades. This release builds on the cross-border blending, adding at least three (and many more than that!) distilleries to the vat to marry and mingle until just right. This is the fifteenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're wrapping up this year on the Podgoblin's Hat with Tove's Christmas offering: The Fir Tree. It's got everything you want from a Christmas story: the light and the dark, the fear and the wonder. There's even a little cameo from the Moomin family gun. We chat about different translations of this story, we exchange presents and talk at length about egg nog. Our Spirits of the Moomins this Week are The Father Christmas Letters by JRR Tolkien, the Muppets Christmas Carol, and Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson. Our Spirits of the Podgoblin's Hat is The Last Christmas, the final episode of Dave's other podcast Getting Better Acquainted.
Highline Spirits is women-led, women-owned, and women-operated - but that's not the story (or the whole story). Entering the blending space, Highline - founded by Christi Lower in her home state of Michigan - was inspired by one of the most beautiful places she (and I!) have ever been: the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park. With 3000' up and 3000' down and just enough width for about two people, the trail is challenging, life-changing, and, clearly, inspirational. Christi's vision is for a blending house that puts out quality, unique blends using the best quality spirits available. She and her team have succeeded with their first four whiskey products: Highline American Whiskey, Highline Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Highline Triple Rye, and Highline Straight Bourbon Blend, each worthy of a taste at their two tasting rooms. By the way - you can order Highline Spirits directly from my site! Anna Axster and Wendelin von Schroder - cousins and veterans of the entertainment industry - have started a whiskey. Just a few weeks ago, that whiskey brand launched as Lodestar Whiskey, a blend of high-rye bourbon and American single malt whiskies aiming for a Southern California vibe. This whiskey - and the women behind it - are worth a look. It's a whiskey aimed at multiple audiences with multiple purposes. It can stand up on its own, to a cube, and in a cocktail (and not in that "this is a great cocktail whiskey" kind of way). It's outright pro-women-leaders with an allusion to feminism on the label, but the whiskey is still the star. I was a little skeptical at first - new people getting into the whiskey business with no background other than as consumers, a lower proof, and family connection? We've seen this go sideways many times. On this one, though, call me convinced. Anna and I talk getting into the business, finding the right blend, connecting with all the audiences they want to, and owning your backyard in a trendy, millennial-centric way. Paul Pacult has made a name as one of the OG whiskey/spirits writers in the US. His books, including Kindred Spirits, Buffalo, Barrels, and Bourbon, and American Still Life, have won multiple awards and gone through multiple printings. He is the founder (with his partners) of the Ultimate Spirits Competition, which is sunsetting later this year, and an otherwise esteemed taster with a legendary regimen for evaluating spirits. Paul is also simply an interesting guy to talk to. He's seen the entire lifecycle of bourbon resurrection, single malt's rise, brown spirits retaking the worldwide consciousness from vodka and gin, writing for publications like the New York Times and many others around the world. I was recently told that if I wanted to succeed in whiskey podcasting, don't try to be Mark Gillespie and WhiskyCast. If you want to be successful in whiskey and spirits writing, don't be Paul Pacult. BUT, take every ounce of inspiration you can from him - he's got a lifetime of experience and he's willing to share. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Paul for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This week, I'm joined by Henric Molin, the chemist-turned-distiller who never quite left the chemistry behind when he and his wife started Spirit of Hven Distillery on a small island in Sweden. Spirit of Hven's products are immediately recognizable by their Erlenmeyer flask-shaped bottles. Inside the bottles is an adventure. Corn whiskey, rye from the far north, gins with nearby botanicals, and more, all from the island itself or the closest possible source on the mainland. They also have 18 stills. 18!!! Some of the largest distillers on the planet don't have 18 stills. Granted, not all of them are large, and most of them are pots, not columns. More than anything, they're a testament to Henric's curiosity and never-stop-exploring attitude. Doesn't hurt that the spirits are pretty damn good, too. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Henric for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Happy Thanksgiving! This week's episode is extra special. I'm joined by Maggie Kimberl - bourbon reviewer, Content Editor for American Whiskey Magazine, panelist for multiple whiskey awards, cigar aficionado, bourbon historian, and prominent member of several groups promoting women in whiskey, perhaps the most important and widely impactful role among the many hats she wears. Maggie is a Louisville girl through and through. She knows her whiskey, sure, but she especially knows her bourbon. We talk about being a whiskey writer, how to fall into a job you love, being friends with (and creating a website for) Mike Veach, and getting rid of your excess bourbon at the family doctor. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Maggie for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! If you're from England, you probably think of Adnams for its 150-year-old brewery. What you might not know is that for just over a decade, they've also been distilling. In fact, they were the first distillery in the UK to have a brewery and distillery on the same site (they had to check with the government!) Adnams not only has a unique distillate for their single malt, they're also putting out one of the few ryes on the English Isles. Using rye from the Adnams family farm a mile away, they're creating a new flavor profile that is not an American rye from England nor an English rye trying to be American, or Continental for that matter. It's delicious - as is the single malt and triple malt - and deserves your attention. _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Barrels are one of those inventions that change the course of human history. Think I'm overstating it? Devised by the Celts and proliferated by the Romans, barrels have carried everything from water to fish to oil and whiskey in the last two millennia. They're (ideally) leak-free, can store things for long periods of time, and are easily moved by one person despite weighing hundreds of pounds. Today, we think of barrels almost exclusively in the realm of whiskey and spirits, but a far richer history is behind them. John Cox, founder and cooper at Quercus Cooperage in New York, learned cooperage the old-fashioned way, taking apart barrels from multiple other cooperages and putting them back together, studying the few texts available, and experimenting with 19th century tools he got from a museum in Canada. This is truly a from-the-bootstraps story, and a fun one at that. John will also be leading a cooperage demonstration at Kings County Distillery on November 10th. If you can't make that one, follow Quercus Cooperage at the social links below for his next lecture and demonstration. _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Some ministers preach that these things came about by some form of spontaneous combustion or magical creation from nothing. But God operates on very genuine and scientific principles–the same that man is learning to use. President Brigham Young declared: But it is hard to get the people to believe that God is a scientific character, that He lives by science or strict law, that by this He is, and by law He was made what He is; and will remain to all eternity because of His faithful adherence to law. * * * He is their Author. What would you do if your family had lived on the same land for 900+ years in the most beautiful area of Ireland, have a history of bootlegging then going legit, and a passion for action? You start a whiskey brand, that's what, and you name it for Daniel O'Connell, your ancestor and one of the most famous Irishmen to ever live. Sir Maurice O'Connell is the man behind Wayward Irish Spirits and The Liberator, a new Irish whiskey brand named for his noted forebear. He is humble, genuine, and quietly putting out one of the best new Irish whiskies I've had in quite some time. Whether it's history or just damn good whiskey, you'll find what you want in this fantastic, Emerald Isle-filled episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Welcome! This week I'm joined by two people at the heart of the Rosen rye and heritage grain movements: Laura Fields, head of the Delaware Valley Fields Foundation, and Bob McDonald, owner and farmer at Dancing Star Farm in central PA. These two know more about farming and grain history than I will ever forget, and the passion is evident. If you don't already, follow Laura and Bob on Facebook - Laura posts on American Whiskey History DAILY and Bob nearly as regularly posts about the new grains being harvested, planted, and tended to on his farm. This episode is heavy on the nerdiness, and I love it. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Live from New York it's Black Button Distillery! Black Button has just opened a brand new facility, 6 times the size of its former one and with 10 times the capacity! They're now producing between 10-15% of all the bourbon in New York, all while promoting New York whiskey, Empire rye, and knowing where your grains are from. I'm joined by founder Jason Barrett, Director of Marketing Gregg Stacy, and Alex Hunnell, the first guy I met from Black Button and how I'm now obsessed with their products. This is recorded live, on-site, before any production had started. It'll be posted with great photos from behind-the-scenes, including new stills, new equipment in every room, and a high-proof alcohol room that I had never heard of let alone seen before. Oh - and one more thing - The Whiskey Ring Podcast is now PROUDLY sponsored by Black Button! ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Hood River, Clear Creek, McCarthy's Single Malt, and Trail's End Bourbon - all are the same family, the same facilities, and part of a whole. Hood River Distillers, founded in 1934, was one of the first distilleries to come online post-Prohibition. Clear Creek was founded by Steve McCarthy in 1985, first to produce fruit brandies and later (starting in the '90s) a peated single malt that paid homage to his newfound love of Islay Scotch. Today, McCarthy's (which, though a brand, is the name by which many would call the family of distilleries) is a leading voice in American Single Malt and one of the OG producers. I'm joined by distiller Caitlin Bartlemay to talk through the history, the future, and the present growth of this fascinating distillery (in between bursts of air from the nearby vodka still!) Ardnamurchan Scotch Whiskey, out of Adelphi Distillery, is not-so-quietly putting out a delicious new style of Scotch, marrying peated and unseated spirit (with peated water right off the peated hills nearby) into a gentle, smoky spirit with huge body and oiliness. Ardnamurchan is an extension of Adelphi, an independent bottler with a history dating to the 1820s. This (relatively) new distillery is focused on quality over quantity, leaning into their remote location on the Scottish coast and learning from nearby Campbeltown. With homages to legend Charlie MacLean and QR-coded blockchain technology, there is a perfect blend of old and new. Lisa Roper Wicker. If you know bourbon (or American whiskey in general), you know her name. She's an industry legend whose humility and quiet nature belies an intensity for her work and a vast store of knowledge. Lisa has had stints at such spots as Limestone Branch, Widow Jane, Pearse Lyons, Samson & Surrey, and more, exploring a new facet of the industry at each step. Distiller, blender, brewer, president, it's all on the resume. Beyond that, though, Lisa is a wonderful human being. For this very special episode, she graciously invited me into her home in Bardstown for a live recording. We spoke for nearly three hours. In between many asides, stories, and connections, we found a commonality - a city boy from New York and a small-town woman who's traveled the world, me loving to visit her state and her having lived in mine for years. Oh - and there's a teaser about her next steps, too. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the twelth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. To wrap up season two we are bringing you the last two picture books set in the Moomin universe written by Tove Jansson. Both of these books are a bit difficult and inaccessible! They're very interesting to Moomin fans in that they show the later stages of Tove's journey with her little trolls, and how she felt about them towards the end of her life. The Dangerous Journey is a portal fantasy that sees human girl Susanna enter the Moomin world and travel through a series of gorgeously bleak watercolor landscapes. The Moomins are barely in this, and when they do appear, it's time for Susanna to go. We talk about the many influences on the art and writing of Jansson and read the book as a kind of retrospective of her life. Villain in the Moominhouse has no official translation into English and is kind of hard to find! You can read a fan translation by Teresa Ronayne here: https://kupdf.net/download/the-unwanted-guest-final-version-03-09-small_58d46345dc0d60893ec34667_pdf This is a more typical story shape for the Moomins, except it's all set inside the Moominhouse. Little My is awakened by a horrible smell - eventually the whole house is roused to search out the pungent intruder. Again, we have characters from all different Moomin books and comics humbled together, in a very much larger than canon house. This book is a photo picture book: each illustration was staged inside a large Moomin dolls house that Tove worked on in collaboration with her friends. It's more of a sculpture than a book? Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Boy Who Climbed Into the Moon by David Almond (honourable mention to How to Stay Sober When You'd Rather Be Dead which you can borrow from overdrive here: https://clevnet.overdrive.com/clevnet-ADVANTAGEKEY/content/media/1475832), Where the Wild Things Are (the movie). And Nina's Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is All About Agatha.

Something that needs new recognition by the TTB, EU, UK, and all regulatory agencies? Introducing Trä-Kál Patagonian Spirit. Think about a brandy base (distilled from fruit) using a gin-esque botanical and fruit mix with essential oils. This defies categorization. Great on its own, Trä-Kál can replace any mixer, any amaro, a vermouth, anything. It's versatile, it's delicious, and I'm glad I ran into it by accident at the Indie Spirits Expo in June. Listen for Sebastian Gomez's fascinating origin story and why we want to spread the gospel of this spirit everywhere. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the eleventh episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're breaking from our normal format for these next two episodes to bring you Tove Jansson's picture books. The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My is really ahead of its time in terms of interactivity and the use of holes cut out of the pages. It's a simple enough journey story, and a vehicle for some really gorgeous art. We compare the translation from the 1960s with the more modern text in our newer editions. There's very creative versification and some brand new Hattifattener lore! And if it's true to say that that first book showcases Tove's love of colour, that's even more true of Who Will Comfort Toffle?. Toffle is a small grey creature living in a big colourful world. He always feels on the outside of everything. Pointillism abounds in the black and white pictures of Toffle's fearful little world. Snufkin has a cameo and he's swapped his mouth organ for a silver flute - what is up with that? Ultimately it's a story about the wisdom and strength that love brings. For obvious reasons, there are a lot more pictures to share than usual this week, so we recommend you find us on twitter and instagram to see all that stuff. Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are the game Gris and Press Here by Herve Tullet. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is She-Ra: Progressive of Power.
This week, we're back to whisky! Still without an E, but whisky nonetheless! We're going to the farthest east coast of Australia, the Gold Coast and Cape Byron to visit Cape Byron Distillery. Founded by Eddie Brook and nurtured by whisky legend Jim McEwan, Cape Byron is putting out whiskies, gins, and liqueurs that celebrate the land from which they come. The Brookie's gin has 25 botanicals, with 17 native species. The single malt is excellent, boasting the creamy, buttery notes of a great malt whisky in half or a third of the time it would take in Scotland. After the whisky and gin, they've got a macadamia-based liqueur, a slow gin (their version of a sloe using native Davidson plums in place of sloe berries), and many more products. Not all are available in the US, but I certainly hope they will be soon. And if you're a fan of Jim McEwan, you'll find some of his signature touches, from the still design to the fermentation, all customized to reflect the unique environment of Australia's east coast. It's halfway across the world, and you should be paying attention to it. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the tenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Content note: discussion of suicidal thoughts in the What Would Snufkin do part of the podcast This book splits three ways on Midsummer Eve: Snufkin is enacting revenge on a Park Keeper, Moomintroll and the Snork Maiden are having a party with a Fillyjonk, and the rest of our crew are still aboard the floating theatre. There's so much about theatre in this book: a play within a play, a lion being played by two beavers, a disastrous dress rehearsal and happy endings all round. We talk about the effects of responsibility on Snufkin (spoiler: he hates it) and there's some light prison abolitionism. It's a banger. You should definitely read this one. Our Spirits this week are Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett, How It Ends and Wizard Team, a black fantasy podcast from Black Nerds Create.
We're taking another diversion from whiskey this week to talk rum! I'm joined by my favorite rum guru, Eric Kaye, to talk Holmes Cay Rum, single barrels, and origin series rums from around the world. Eric spends half the year traveling around the world, trying rums from Barbados and Jamaica to Mauritius, Japan, and Fiji. Dozens of countries, all making their own styles of rum for exploration. And that's why Holmes Cay is the best way to get into the rum game. It's not all Bacardi, sugared and colored sugarcane distillate, and mixed drinks - rum is incredibly diverse, can handle years of aging both continentally and tropically, and varies far more from country to country than anything you'll see in whiskey. I caught a new rum bug recently and I genuinely think it may be more exciting than whiskey at the moment. At minimum, it's something new to explore. Glad I've got someone like Eric to guide me through the journey. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the ninth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. It's summer in Moominvalley and this book truly hits the ground running. There's a volcano casually going off in the background, and another flood, and the Moomin family has to relocate to a strange floating house. Also, Snufkin is nowhere to be found and Moomintroll is pining away. We've got a bunch of cool new characters, some magical midsummer traditions, and a lot of theatrical superstitions. Dave is taking a new occasional rubrik out for a spin: it's the Clothes Corner!... Nina's usual Botany Corner is also here, and it's all about mosses and lichens. Our Spirits this week are Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, The Spellcoats by Diana Wynne Jones, and So I Got To Thinking, a Sex and the City podcast by Juno Dawson and Dylan B Jones.
Let's be honest - if you don't know who or what Jack Daniel's is, you probably aren't old enough to listen to this podcast. ANYWAY - I'm thrilled to be joined by Lexie Phillips, Assistant Distiller. Lexie is not only the first woman in this position, she's also an accomplished distiller and taster in her own right with a background in agriculture. Oh, and she led the barrel pick that resulted in TWO barrels for podcast listeners! Lexie and I talk the parts of Jack that you don't always hear about, including the rye, the single malt, how Jack became Jack, and how one of the world's largest distilleries is managing to put out innovative (and good!) releases multiple times per year. I can't tell you how excited I was to get this podcast in the books. Thank you to Lexie and the entire Jack Daniel's and FINN Partners group for making this happen. Special shout out to Hillary, without whom none of this was possible. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the eighth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're back with the second half of Moominpappa's memoirs, in which our brave hero becomes the subject of a country run by an Autocrat, starts a colony and meets his wife. Moomintroll has some very sensible notes for his Pappa in this half of the book, Sniff has some very good questions, but alas, we will never know why Moominmamma was in the sea. Our question for Snufkin this week comes from Helen Zaltzman. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Edward Carey's The Swallowed Man and Alice Tarbuck's A Spell in the Wild. Nina's other podcast, Even the Trunchbull, is our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat.
Part 2 of our episode with Dread River Distilling in Alabama gets down to the nuts and bolts with new distiller Joshua Goins. Founder John Cubelic stole Joshua down to Birmingham to take over the distilling, and just a month and a half into the job he entered the Whiskey Ring. I must say, he did an amazing job. This episode works best with Part 1 (Episode 98) but is set as a standalone, too. Enjoy! ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! This is the seventh episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back to a new season of the Podgoblin's Hat! This week, Nina is reading the Exploits of Moominpappa and Dave is reading the Memoirs of Moominpappa. Our theme for these books is Memoir. This episode is all about unreliable narrators, self mythologising and the fundamental mystery of our parents. Moominpappa has finally finished his memoirs and is reading them out to the children. Did he really build a Moomin house, or did he just draw it? How much of this story is true? We have a question for Snufkin from upcoming guest Martin Zaltz Austwick, who you can find here. Our Spirits of the Moomins are both memoirs: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. Dave's spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Down to a Sunless Sea.
Back to whiskey! Driving down to Brooklyn, we're visiting New York Distilling Co. (NYDC) with founder Allen Katz. NYDC was one of the first distilleries back in NY after the craft movement started. It devoted itself to only one type of whiskey: rye. Gins, too, but only rye on the whiskey side. And that rye is Empire Rye - a minimum of 75% rye grown in New York. NYDC is a fascinating study in focus and length. A decade-plus in its history and multiple rye variations later, it stays true to that mission: rye is, and always will be, the driver behind NYDC's growth. After a move from its longtime home in Williamsburg to a new, larger site in Bushwick, NYDC is ready to keep growing. With its founder still at the helm, this is a NY distillery to discover, revisit, and enjoy. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! I know what you're thinking: Gin? That bitter, juniper-heavy, cocktail drink? Yes, gin. But gin is so much more than a mixing spirit. Gins have been a low-key favorite spirit of mine for a while now. The most interesting ones differentiate themselves with local botanicals (read: plants, spices, etc.) that create a profile unique to that place. Some, like this week's guest, start before that, using the base as a differentiator. I didn't know this, but apparently whey-based alcohol is a thing and a growing thing at that. Basically, take the whey off of cheese-making/dairy production, ferment and distill it, and you get a base alcohol just like if you distilled fruit or grain or potatoes. The difference is the mouthfeel, and boy is there a difference. Bertha's Revenge is the best of both worlds: a gin that has the botanical profile of provenance with a mouthfeel that's unmistakably viscous. It's a gin that works perfectly well in a cocktail and as a standalone (especially that navy strength - wow!). Add in the sloe gin (Slow Bertha, a fantastic name) and founders Justin and Antony have a winning combo. This is a flat-out fun episode, bouncing around between a London gin trip to the brand's namesake, a 49-year-old cow (deceased in 1993) who had a mind-boggling 39 calves in her lifetime. 39!!! My god...that Droimeann must be proud of the gin that's adopted her name and likeness. If you have 39 kids and don't drink, you're listening to the wrong podcast. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: The first WRP barrel pick is coming! This is the sixth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. It's also the last episode of the first series of the show. It's the end of Finn Family Moomintroll, and the end of series 1! The Hattifatteners have their barometer back, Snufkin gets around to telling the others about the Hobgoblin and his hat, and we meet Thingumy and Bob, the lesbian-inspired non binary couple of your dreams. This book has more bumps in the road for us as modern readers than those that went before. #JusticeForTheSnorkmaiden It also contains some really positive representations of what we might call non-monogamy and queerness. Truly a mixed bag. Our question for Snufkin comes from Jane Eyre, and concerns marriage and true love. Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are: The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is: On Eyre from Hot and Bothered. We'll be back after a break with Memoirs (or are they Exploits?) of Moominpappa.
This is the fifth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we're reading the first half of Finn Family Moomintroll. Spring has sprung and the children have discovered a very interesting hat on top of a hill. The hat starts to transform everything that sits inside it, from eggshells, to outlandish words, to Moomintroll himself. Moominmamma is in the mood for a change of scene and leads an expedition to the Hattifatteners' lonely island. Snufkin catches sight of a terrific villain in the heart of a storm. Our theme for this book is ALCHEMY, and we're looking at transformations and all things golden. Also, colonialist fantasies, various masculinities and the first edition of Nina's Botany Corner. Our question this week pertains to Dave's nonmonogamous emotional life (!) so you'll definitely want to tune in for that. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Bluey and Knock Three Times by Cressida Cowell. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood].
A simple opportunity to reverently dwell and meditate upon a deeply meaningful and enriching advent hymn. "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" - 11th Century (1861 — John Mason Neale)O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel; That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan's tyranny; From depths of hell Thy people save, And give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer, Our Spirits by Thine Advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death's dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Key of David, come And open wide our heavenly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, thou Lord of Might Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height, In ancient times didst give the law, In cloud, and majesty, and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.www.incense-ptl.comeric@incense-ptl.comTracks:"Yamabushi" by Cast of Characters
THE LAW OF PROPAGATION, Chapter 4 of Michael Adam of The Adam God Doctrine Pages 36 to 51 To read along click here: https://fundamentallymormon.tumblr.com/post/671763525402869760/the-law-of-propagation-chapter-4-of-michael-adam There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated–And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated. (D & C 130:20-21) The laws of mathematics, science, and of propagation are eternal in their nature. Shortcuts by disobedience cannot produce similar results in these or in any of the works of God. But it is hard to get the people to believe that God is a scientific character, that He lives by science or strict law, that by this He is, and by law He was made what He is; and will remain to all eternity because of His faithful adherence to law. It is a most difficult thing to make the people believe that . . . He is their Author. Our Spirits are His; He begot them. We are his children; He set the machine in motion to produce our tabernacles. (Brigham Young, JD 13:306) The law of propagation is not an exception, and all living things must come forth by the law of reproduction through the seed of its own type and kind. Plants, insects, fowls, animals, and man, must reproduce their own species through obedience to this eternal and unchangeable law. Air Date: 10 22 21 “The strong spirit of a man sustains him in bodily pain or trouble, but a weak and broken spirit who can raise up or bear?” PROVERBS 18:14 Peter does not begin to exhort Christian pilgrims until he has celebrated the wonders of God's salvation in Jesus Christ. The indicative of what God had done for us and in us precedes the imperative of what we are called to do for Him. ‘Without the pinpointing of what God does, the essential is addressed to a helpless sinner, the victim of his illusions; it becomes a commandment that crushes or that drives to vain and presumptuous efforts. Our hope is God's gift, an inheritance created for us by Christ's resurrection (1:3). Because we have been given hope, we are called to live in it. –Romans 1:17 | For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Peter's exhortations continue through his letter. Yet he also continues to remind us of the reality of redemption that underlies his call to obedience. In the rest of this chapter he summons us to the obedience of hope, hope that is marked by readiness and holiness. 3 John 2—NLT: “Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. On Sunday, Denise Steyn shared on the Renewing of our minds. Our Spirits are born again at salvation, but our minds need to be renewed day by day. We can have the mind of Christ and the process of renewing is changing the way we think, from being bent on not trusting the Lord to knowing He is good and trusting Him with our lives. It’s time to start living in integrity - when all the places inside of us begin to line up and tell the same story! We do this by getting real with God, reading the Bible, thinking on purpose, reaching out for help and worshiping God despite our circumstances. - Romans 12:2

“CREATING” PLANTS AND ANIMALS, Chapter 16 page 154 of Mysteries of Creation by Ogden Kraut. www.youtube.com/user/Godismycompass www.facebook.com/Lazurus1977 Once the world was built and ready for habitation, the problem arose of how to put plants and animal upon it. Our Spirits are His; He begot them. We are His children; He set the machine in motion to produce our tabernacles;… (JD 13:306) The laws of propagation are no exception. All living things must come forth by these reproductive laws and principles–each after its own kind. Every plant, insect, bird, animal and human follow these eternal laws of reproduction. The Prophet Joseph Smith declared: God has made certain decrees which are fixed and immovable; . . . for instance, the oak of the forest, the fruit of the tree, the herb of the field, all bear a sign that seed hath been planted there; for it is a decree of the Lord that every tree, plant, and herb bearing seed should bring forth of its kind, and cannot come forth after any other law or principle. (TPJS, p. 198)
Fr Paul Uwemedimo speaks of this great promise of God given to us by St Paul in this homily for the 5th Sunday of Lent. The post Our Spirits will Live appeared first on Cradio.
It's not about the hand that life dealt you, but the life that God gave you. To enter into the Victory, we have to enter into thanksgiving and rejoicing for what God HAS already given us. Words are what release the Supernatural and we take charge over the natural life. There is a Supernatural gene inside each and everyone of us that we can not deny. Our Spirits automatically long for the Supernatural life, so go after it. We are to rule and reign on earth because we are not natural men.
