This is the 8th bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Our guest Ali Baker is a researcher in children's literature with a particular interest in children's voice and children's rights, so it's no surprise she chose to come on and talk to us about The Invisible Child! Ali makes a strong case for Bjork as a Spirit of Little My and reminisces about finding the Moomins in her local library as a kid. We situate the Moomins as a type of fantasy, and Ali recommend's Dr Farah Mendlesohn's Rhetorics of Fantasy. We talk about the mixed up class elements of the Moomin family, and go on a long tangent about femme-shaming (#JusticeForTheSnorkMaiden), with reference to Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet. Ali's article about the the sensitivity edit's to Roald Dahl's work is here. Her Spirit of the Moomin's is Bjork's album Vespertine, and her Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is her podcast Fantasy Book Swap.

This is the twenty-first episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we're reading one of Tove's most famous short stories: The Invisible Child. It's a pretty bright and funny story with very dark themes. We both like it, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype, for us. Little My is picking poisonous mushrooms (what else is new?), Moomintroll is an ass, and Moominmamma is a confirmed witch. It's a good one for cameos of Too-Ticky, and vengeance on fathers. We've got quite the fungus-based Natural History/Translation chat. We talk about whether bashing coldly ironical types in the head is even any use. Justice for people with hair colours that aren't black or yellow! There is a deep dive into Nina's ginger experience, and the way gingers, particularly ginger girls, are represented in kids' fiction. Our Spirits of the Moomins are The Little Prince by Saint Exupery, as read by Peter Ustinov, and Where the Wild Ladies Are, by Matsuda Aoko and translated by Polly Barton. Dave's Spirit of the Moomins is The White Pube website and podcast, particularly their video game reviews.

This week, with Stuart and Eamonn on holiday, we have a wee treat in store - a girl power double header with Talk Media favourites Catriona Stewart and Shona Craven. At the end of the show a listener question suggested by Brian Brussels. Recommendations: Shona Invisible Child - Book - Andrea Elliot Based on nearly a decade of reporting, Invisible Child follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani Coates, a child with an imagination as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn homeless shelter. Born at the turn of a new century, Dasani is named for the bottled water that comes to symbolise Brooklyn's gentrification and the shared aspirations of a divided city. As Dasani moves with her family from shelter to shelter, this story traces the passage of Dasani's ancestors from slavery to the Great Migration north. Dasani comes of age as New York City's homeless crisis is exploding. In the shadows of this new Gilded Age, Dasani leads her seven siblings through a thicket of problems: hunger, parental drug addiction, violence, housing instability, segregated schools and the constant monitoring of the child-protection system. When, at age thirteen, Dasani enrolls at a boarding school in Pennsylvania, her loyalties are tested like never before. Ultimately, she faces an impossible question: What if leaving poverty means abandoning the family you love? By turns heartbreaking and revelatory, provocative and inspiring, Invisible Child tells an astonishing story about the power of resilience, the importance of family and the cost of inequality. https://www.waterstones.com/book/invisible-child/andrea-elliott/9781529156102 Catriona: American Fiction - Film - Cord Jefferson AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson's hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture's obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. https://www.mgm.com/movies/american-fiction Glasgow School of Art fire - Features - The Herald Almost a decade has passed since the unique and world-renowned Mackintosh Building at Glasgow School of Art was badly damaged in a fire as final year students prepared for their degree show.  Four years later, the category A-listed landmark - widely regarded as Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterpiece - suffered a second, more significant fire as it was nearing the end of a £35 million restoration effort to repair the damage incurred during the 2014 fire. https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/24199850.complete-timeline-glasgow-school-art-fires/

Youth comprise 8 percent and families 12 percent. Homelessness disproportionately affects Black people, LGBTQ people, and individuals with disabilities. She tells me how she came to spend seven years reporting on a single, homeless family in Brooklyn, how she negotiated her duty to observe rather than participate – and what their telenovela-like experiences tell us about American history.

In 2013, the front page of The New York Times devoted five straight days to the story of Dasani, an 11-year-old Black girl who lived in a homeless shelter in Brooklyn. Now, Andrea Elliott, the reporter of that series, has published her first book, “Invisible Child,” which tells the full story of Dasani and her family up to the present day. On this week's podcast, Elliott discusses how she came to focus her reporting on Dasani.“I've always believed as a journalist that the story shows itself to you, and you just have to do the work of being there and being present for as long as possible until it becomes more clear,” Elliott says. “In the very beginning, I had three families I was following at that shelter. And I had this approach that a lot of journalists take, that you need to capture three different families to give a sense of the spectrum of experience. But what I think becomes more important to the reader is to be able to identify deeply with one story, one protagonist, and follow that person.” Dasani became that person, in part, Elliott says, because “she was somebody who, at a very young age, could articulate in a moving and profound way her experience. And that's a rare trait even in adults.”The stand-up comedian, actress, producer and publisher Phoebe Robinson visits the podcast to discuss her new book of essays, “Please Don't Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes.”“Book writing is a completely different style of writing than stand-up,” Robinson says. “Stand-up, there's a rhythm and you're aware of the laughs and how they're hitting. With a book you can really have more flavor with it; you can be vulnerable, you can slow it down, have some down beats, you could be really funny. I wouldn't say it's difficult to write stand-up versus book writing. They both have their challenges.”Also on this week's episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary; Elizabeth Harris has news from the publishing world; and Gregory Cowles and John Williams talk about what they've been reading. We are beyond thrilled that Drew Droege joined us this week! So thrilled in fact, that we neglected to introduce ourselves or name check the podcast in the episode. But rest assured, no one has tried to imitate us...yet. Drew weighs in on the on-going saga of the Kazakhstani bodybuilder who married a sex doll, divorced her and married two others. Plus, we discuss the little known Rita Wilson/Victor Garber movie, "Invisible Child". When Drew referenced this film in his one-man Off Broadway show a few years back, Anne knew she met her Lifetime soul mate. We think you'll agree, there's only one word to describe this plotline and it is "outrageous". Follow Drew on Twitter @DrewDroge to find out about all his appearances and his upcoming LA show, "The Golden Girlz: The Return". And of course, keep listening to "That's Outrageous". What if you could reframe anything including 2020 as a year that had its positives? Meet Timothy Phelps. During this very vulnerable conversation, he shares how he overcame early childhood traumas and how by changing his mindset he overcame being homeless. This conversation covers a lot including how he was able to forgive those who hurt him, the way he was able to balance his reality with his massive ambitions when he was homeless, and how he sees 2020. Here is a bit more about Timothy whom I met by way of Jessie Itzler’s Build Your Life Resume community. We were both seeking to rekindle our sense of adventure and his courage stuck out during a training with Jens Pulver a retired MMA champion who also experienced trauma.   Timothy endured child abuse and neglect, quickly developing self-doubts, fears, and depression at a young age. School was his safe haven, although it was not truly safe, as he endured bullying. Phelps hated life, and after being told multiple times he was a mistake, should’ve never been born, and should just kill himself, he attempted suicide on multiple occasions. After battling drug and alcohol addictions, he almost succeeded, but then God! Phelps had a long journey to overcome the odds and ensure he was not a statistic.   The journey was rough, even finding himself homeless, but his desire was greater than his situation. Phelps gained a strong desire to learn and grow, finding success in real estate before being called to tell his story and help others who’ve been through similar situations. His first book, "The Invisible Child: Overcoming the Odds" was published early 2020.  Phelps was told it's lonely at the top, but he believes it's only lonely if you're not willing to take others with you. He desires to utilize his talents, skills, and experiences to help others climb their own mountain. Phelps believes we all have hurdles in which we must overcome. He believes we all need someone in our corner, and knows with God and massive ambition, anyone can overcome the odds! Due to these beliefs, Phelps helps others in overcoming one of the biggest obstacles they'll face, their own mindset, ultimately assisting in their own personal transformation, for the lifestyle they deserve.   Share this episode with three of your friends who you consider to be strong and resilient. Chances are their strength was necessary to get through life challenges.   Highlights   Story: On writing a memoir that includes your traumatic childhood. Forgiveness: Timothy sat with his parents prior to publishing his memoir asking for their blessing. Poem: A reading of The Invisible Child poem. Excuses: Using your bad deck of cards as an excuse vs. a superpower. Suicide: Did God really talk to Timothy? Homeless: The turning point when Timothy was in the tunnel where he slept. Cognitive Dissonance: How can you balance being homeless yet having “massive ambitions”? Faith: What is true faith? Mantras: Never back down, never give up. Self-Belief:  How can anyone see themselves differently after being “brainwashed”? Mindset: Change your mindset, change your life. What is the magic mirror? Goals: How to retrain yourself to see success? First Step: Seek a community to join if you’ve suffered trauma that’s step one. Compassion: You don’t know what others are going through at all.     Links to quench your curiosity:   Website: www.coachphelpscanhelp.com Follow Timothy on Instagram Find Timothy on Facebook Adult Survivors of Child Abuse   Did you enjoy the conversation?  Ever wish you could be a fly on the wall?
