Revered science reporter and radio host Bob McDonald has devoted his career to turning our attention away from everyday perspectives and outward to the vast, intricate wonders of our planet and universe. Now, in this revealing and captivating memoir, he looks within, offering an intimate view of the path that brought him from a blue-collar background to his long-standing role as Canada's foremost explainer of all things scientific.

What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Bob McDonald. Bob has been the host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks since 1992 and is a regular science commentator on the CBC News Network and a science correspondent for The National. He is the author of multiple books, including The Earthling's Guide to Outer Space, Canadian Spacewalkers, and The Future is Now. He has been honoured with the Michael Smith Award for science promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for Science, and the McNeil Medal for the public awareness of science from the Royal Society of Canada. He has also been made an Officer of the Order of Canada and has an asteroid named after him. Bob's most recent book is the memoir Just Say Yes, which was published in 2024 by Douglas & McIntyre. Astronaut and author Chris Hadfield says about Just Say Yes that “Bob takes his rare ability to explain the world to us all and applies it to himself in this delightful, often surprising and ever-insightful autobiography.” Bob and I talk about the importance of promoting and communicating real science amid the proliferation of misinformation and conspiracy theories (and why the closing of the Ontario Science Centre doesn't exactly help with that goal), about his initial reluctance to include the story of his childhood sexual abuse in his memoir (but why he is proud that he did), and about his work-in-progress, a book for kids that focuses on—surprise!—science. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

There's More To Western Pennsylvania Than The Whiskey Rebellion! If you're a whiskey nerd of any level, of course you know this, but it's worth saying again. Previous guests such as Wigle Whiskey and Liberty Pole Spirits have done excellent work exploring the Whiskey Rebellion's place in history and its importance to the area - so if you're a new distillery looking to find your niche, you better bring something new or different to the table.  When Matt Strickland had the opportunity to return stateside from his time at Distillerie Cotes de Saints, the call came from Pittsburgh, but he had a question: what does success look like? And what will set us apart?  Before a drop was distilled or a brick laid, the answer became clear: revive a style of rye (or multiple styles, more accurately) using heritage grains, a pot still, and a three-chamber still, only the second active one in the US and third in the world. Working with only Pennsylvania farmers (including previous guest Bob McDonald) and thought leaders like Laura Fields, Matt built out the distillery with the blessings of his bosses to make it authentic and make it right, efficiency be damned.  Bringing in historically accurate features like 38-43 gallon barrels and brick, steam-heated warehouses similar to what they would have used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, The Iron City Team is creating a new, old, new again style of whiskey. We have a bit more time before the whiskies are ready for the public, but I'm as excited as anyone to try them.  Matt will also be back to talk more about his writing and education after delving a bit into his work in this episode, so more to come!  Thank you to Matt for entering the Whiskey Ring! “Leadership is about doing the right thing - beyond politics - for the purpose and values of the country.” Once again, this election may be the most important of our lifetime, so we hope you've made your plan to VOTE.  Bob McDonald - former P&G CEO and US Secretary of Veterans Affairs - returns to our podcast to share his unique perspective on service, leadership, people, and values and the choice we are making at this moment in our history. Beyond being a P&G Alum and an army veteran, Bob's served Republican and Democratic Presidents. His political engagement is wide, and purpose-driven - always seeking to transcend party politics. This is a reply of our conversation from October 2020 - in the midst of our LAST presidential election - but much of what we discussed is still relevant in THIS election.  Many of our leaders - across both sides of the aisle - have expressed their concerns in THIS 2024 election for our community and country. On one hand, we face a retreat and possible return to our nation's darker impulses of grievance and division. On the other, a new path forward, rooted in a greater purpose, values and principles, for the next generation. No matter what generation you belong to...if you can vote, please do. If you have friends who are on the fence, talk to them, make the case rooted in our common purpose values, and principles, and get them to vote. It's all on the line. And the next generation of leaders is counting on all of us.

“The purpose, values and principles — John Smale understood the importance of the soul of the company.” Bob McDonald & Bob Gill are two P&G Alumni who share many things in common, least of which is their first name. The first is no stranger to this podcast — Bob McDonald, who served as P&G's former CEO from 2009-2013, and was the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs from 2014-2017. And our second guest is another well known Alum to many P&G Executives — Bob GIll - who served at P&G for 28 years in many senior leadership positions - from 1974 to 2002, where he had more than a few interactions with John Smale. Both of this episode's Bobs - McDonald and Gill — have a lot to share about the purpose-inspired, caring, yet demanding and principled leader that was John Smale. For this month's podcasts, we'll be hearing reflections from leaders on John Smale, P&G's former Chairman & CEO, who led P&G from 1981-1990, and served as General Motors' Chairman from 1992-1995. These conversions are in honor o f the new book "Here Forever: The Timeless Impact of John Smale on Procter & Gamble, General Motors, and the Purpose and Practice of Business" (by Rob Garver), available now. While John Smale passed away in 2011 - he is arguably one the most influential leaders of the modern era, growing P&G more than six-fold in his tenure. And yet, Smale is largely unknown to many leaders guiding American and global businesses today. John's leadership in developing a vision for corporate purpose was decades ahead of its time. This was a book years in the making by not just the author, but many of some of the biggest leaders in business. “Here Forever” is a compelling and insightful read we'd highly recommend, and will make a great holiday gift for the admired, or aspiring leaders in your life. On October 24, 1992 a new voice took the helm at CBC's already venerable science program. And three decades and some 7000 interviews later, Bob McDonald is ready to look back - while still looking forward. We celebrated Bob's 30th anniversary with a show recorded in front of a live audience at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, where Bob began his career as a science communicator half a century ago. The event was hosted by Tapestry's Mary Hynes, as Bob was a guest on Quirks for the first time. We looked back at Bob's career, and some of the big stories in science he covered over the years, with appearances by special guests including retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Nobel prize winner Art McDonald, and a whole family of friends and former guests on the program. It was a great evening of reminiscences and storytelling, with one eye on the past, but, as always with Quirks & Quarks, another on the future. ** This podcast contains bonus material not included in the radio broadcast.

CX Leader Podcast with Steve Walker | A resource for customer experience leaders

Change is not easy. It's human instinct to become comfortable with “what you know.” But sometimes a change is necessary – when CX professionals notice a problem, or recognize a way to make the customer's experience better, their instinct is to find solutions to improve how they interact with customers. And a large global technology company needs a CX leader who can bring people together into a common purpose and inspire them to do what's best for their customers. Host Steve Walker welcomes Bob McDonald, vice president of global CRM experience for IBM, for a discussion on how Bob made the case to transform their customer experience.

Simon shares his knowledge on UNEA-5.2, the second half of UNEP's biennial United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEA functions as the world's parliament on the environment, where global environment ministers congregate to debate and decide on priorities of environmental concern in the context of nation states and the global community. How is it different from other environment conferences, like the climate  COP?What should we expect from UNEA5.2 at the end of February?Which issues at UNEA5.2 are particularly contentious? To learn more about the 5th session of UNEA, please visit:IGES' UNEA-5.2 Special Webpage: https://www.iges.or.jp/en/projects/unea5-2IGES' UNEA-5.1 Special Webpage: https://www.iges.or.jp/en/projects/unea5-1About our co-hosts:Andre Mader leads the IGES unit on Biodiversity and Forests and is adviser to an IPBES Technical Support Unit hosted by IGES.  He has a background in conservation management, science and policy, and has practiced mostly in Switzerland, Canada, the UAE, and his land of birth, South Africa.Bob McDonald leads our Technology Solutions unit at IGES.  He has decades of experience in IT and Web Development, but is an interested outsider when it comes to environmental issues.  He loves making stuff, both physical and digital. Erin Kawazu is a Programme Coordinator in Knowledge Management and Communications, Strategic Management Office at IGES.  Her background is in environmental health sciences, a field that combines environmental science and public health. Previously, she served as the Assistant Dean for External Relations at the David Eccles School of Business.Bob McDonald graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the top 2 percent of the Class of 1975 and earned his MBA from the University of Utah in 1978. Before joining VA, he was Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G). He was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate to serve as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Obama.Bob and Heidi narrate a little bit about their backgrounds. They share their connection to the Eccles school, how they came to know each other, and the projects they have worked on together. They share their views on empathy and how they applied it throughout their career. They also explained the role empathy plays in leadership development. Finally, Bob and Heidi offer their advice to people on finding and discovering their life purpose and Bob shares his infamous leadership tenants that have guided Heidi throughout her career.Episode Quotes:What is empathy?Bob - "(Empathy) to me is an incredibly important leadership trait. (You) really have to be able to put yourself in the other person's position and understand that, not just logically, but viscerally, to be able to provide the proper leadership."Heidi - "As far as putting somebody else before you or putting yourself in their shoes, the golden rule is to treat others as you would like to be treated. And the platinum rule is to treat others as they would like to be treated. And I think we miss that so often. Sometimes we're not listening to what it is they're trying to tell us. And sometimes, it's just the little things that go a long way."Empathy on leadership developmentBob - "I can train you in all the behaviors of leadership, their technical behaviors. We can give you the judgment to decide to use them. What I can't train you in is the love you have to have for the people you work with. And it's that love that makes your behaviors authentic. It's that love that leads to empathy. I believe the very best leaders have that love, and that love shows up as empathy."Heidi - "Most people don't want to fail. We have a hard time accepting failure. I feel empathy is a great way to help people recover. They've got to figure out how to get back out there, and you can't just tuck in and go away; you've got to brush off and figure out how you're going to go back out and try it again."Heidi on her life purpose - "This university is my purpose. It has been a transformative experience for me. Every day that I come to work, this is a calling for me, and I'm blessed to have that. How many people can say they have a job that has so much meaning to them?"Bob's advice on finding life's purpose - "Sometimes it takes time, but my suggestion is to look back across your life and look for threads of continuity in your life. As you try to connect those various activities in your life and get in touch with your passion, you try to articulate how that may ladder up to a bigger purpose."
