Why do natural disasters happen regularly in the Philippines? It's because of their location. They're situated right in the middle of the Typhoon Belt and Pacific Ring of Fire. This makes them more susceptible AND more resilient because they're used to it. I'll talk more about it in this episode.

BIENVENIDO A SAN SALVADOR Den første del af min tur til El Salvador er i hovedstaden San Salvador. Jeg tager dig med på en gåtur gennem byen, hvor jeg møder de venlige salvadoranere og får smagt på både deres fantastiske kaffe og nationalret, pupusas. Jeg lander i El Salvadors internationale lufthavn omkring 40 minutter fra hovedstaden og den største by i dette utroligt interessante land. Jeg lander om eftermiddagen og havde besluttet mig for at overnatte den første nat på et lille lufthavnshotel. Dels for at jeg ikke skulle ankomme til en stor potentiel farlig storby efter mørkets frembrud. Det var nu lidt en fejl – jeg kunne sagtens have taget ind til byen samme dag, og hotellet og området var i sandhed ikke særlig interessant. Så tidligt den næste morgen hoppede jeg ombord på en ”chicken bus” ind til byen. Busser er en god og billig måde at fragte sig rundt i dette land. Denne 50 minutters køretur til byen kostede kun 4 kr. #DontSkipElSalvador El Salvador er fantastisk og du bør ikke springe over landet, hvis du rejser gennem Central Amerika. Der er færre turister end de andre lande i denne region, og det er lidt uforståeligt, da de har så meget at byde på. Jeg havde dog overvejet at springe over hovedstaden, da jeg primært var her for at opleve deres storslåede natur med vulkaner og eksotiske strande, men jeg er glad for at jeg alligevel besluttede mig for at tilbringe et par dage her. Da jeg kom ind med bussen prajede jeg en taxa til at fragte mig til Hotel Santa Elena, som jeg havde booket via Hotels25.dk – og fik mig endnu en snak på mit tvivlsomme spanske.   ER EL SALVADOR FARLIG? El Salvador har ry for at være et farligt land. Det er markeret som ”farlig” med en rød farve på  Travel Risk Map.com. Ifølge denne hjemmeside er landet det 51. mest farlige land i verden. Men ifølge en af de lokale, Edwin, handler det blot om at bruge sin sunde fornuft. Han fortæller mig, at der ikke er så mange lommetyve, som rygtet siger, men lad være med at gå ned ad en mørk gyde om natten. Sund fornuft. FREE WALKING TOUR I SAN SALVADOR Som du ved er jeg meget glad for at tage på en Free Walking Tour, når jeg kommer til en ny by. Sådan en 2-3 timers vandretur (baseret på drikkepenge) giver et godt overblik over en by, og man kan markere nogle steder, man har lyst til au udforske noget mere. Edwin E. Carrillo er ejer og operations manager of EC Tours El Salvador, som stod for turen. Han startede firmaet for seks år siden og tilbyder vandreture i San Salvador, ture til vulkaner, vandreture i bjergene og meget mere. De var faktisk det første firma, der tilbød Free Walking Tours i Central Amerika. Efter turen fik jeg en snak med Edwin og Estefany Hernandez fra EC Tours på tredje sal i et parkeringshus med udsigt over Plaza Morazan og en stor, smuk bygning, der huser landets nationalteater. Hvad der startede som et ekstra tilbud til hans Airbnb gæster blev hurtigt til en selvstændig forretning. Han bemærkede, at mange af sine gæster kun bookede en enkelt nat, så ved at tilbyde ture i byen som noget ekstra, kunne han konstatere, at mange besluttede at blive lidt længere. EL SALVADOR ER VULKANERNES LAND El Salvador ligger på “The Pacific Ring of Fire”, et hesteskoformede seismisk aktive bælte af jordskælv, vulkaner og tektoniske pladegrænser, der frynser Stillehavsbassinet. Der er omkring 170 vulkaner i dette lille land, hvoraf seks af dem er aktive. Den mest aktive vulkan er Chaparrastique vulkan, som har haft 26 udbrud de seneste 500 år. Den var i udbrud i 2005 og på toppen kan du kigge ned i krateret, som er fyldt med grønligt svovlholdigt vand. Det er noget, jeg gør senere, så glæd dig til at tage med i en senere episode. 6 INTERESSANTE FAKTA OM EL SALVADOR:   El Salvador er det mindste land I Central Amerika. Det lille land har et areal på blot 21.000 km2, så det er på størrelse med Wales og halvt så stort som lille Danmark. Tættest befolkede land Med en befolkning på næsten 7 millioner er El Salvador det tættest befolkede land i hele ”The Americas”. Ingen caribisk kystlinje El Salvador er det eneste land i Central Amerika uden caribisk kystlinje. Tropisk paradis Klimaet i El Salvador er tropisk. Regntiden er fra maj til oktober og den tørre sæson er fra november til april. Nationalretten er de berømte ”Pupusas” En pupusa er en tyk majstortilla fyldt med et velsmagende fyld, som ost, bønner, forskelligt svinekød eller kylling... Eller en kombination af dem alle. Dollars og Bitcoins Den officielle valuta i El Salvador er den amerikanske dollar. Men mens jeg var der i juni og juli 2021 eksperimenterede den progressive unge præsident Nayib Bukele med at gøre Bitcoins en officiel national valuta på side med dollars. Men for en måned siden i december 2021 stod det klart at eksperiments var fejlet, da mere end 90% af salvadoranerne sagde at de foretrak Dollars frem for Bitcoins. Bukele, der mere ligner en rapper end en præsident (med en omvendt kasket), sagde i en tale ved the Latin America Bitcoin and Blockchain konference i november, at ”løsningen blot er flere Bitcoins”. Så måske har vi ikke hørt det sidste i den historie. EN GRUM HISTORIE MED MASSER AF BORGERKRIG Fra slutningen af det 19. århundrede til midten af det 20. har El Salvador været igennem stor økonomisk og politisk ustabilitet. Der har været masser af statskup, oprør og en række forskellige diktatorer. Under krigen var det meget farligt at opholde sig i El Salvador – især i den nordlige del. Efter mange års uro blev der fred og El Salvador fik demokrati.   MØD DE SKØNNE LOKALE I EL SALVADOR Jeg opdagede hurtigt, at salvadoranerne er utroligt venlige og imødekommende. Og da jeg spørger Estefany, hvad der er specielt ved El Salvador, siger hun også befolkningen. De er smilende, går ekstra langt for at hjælpe dig, og vil gerne tale – selvom deres engelske måske ikke er det bedste. ET HOSPITAL PÅ AFVEJE OG JESU HJERTE Vi kom også forbi et hospital – Rosales Hospital, der er en stor bygning, der blev bygget for mere end 100 år siden i Belgien af alle steder. Herefter blev det sendt (i stumper) her til San Salvador, men ikke direkte. Der var en på kontoret i Belgien, der lavede en fejl. Han sendte det i stedet til Salvador de Bahia i Brasilien. Da de opdagede fejlen, blev det lastet tilbage på et skib og sejlet hele vejen rundt om Sydamerika hertil. Husk på at dette var inden Panamá kanalen. Estefany fortæller, at El Salvador på det tidspunkt havde så mange penge fra kaffehandel, at de havde råd til den slags fejl. Men utvivlsom var der en belgier med røde ører, der stod til en kammeratlig samtale på chefens kontor. Vi besøgte også kirken, Basílica Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Sacred Heart of Jesus), der som hospitalet også var bygget i Belgien og sejlet hertil. Dog uden et lille ophold I Brasilien. TAK FOR KAFFEN, EL SALVADOR El Salvador er verdensberømt for deres kaffe. Det bliver dyrket i den vestlige del af landet, og er speciel ved dens blanding af to forskellige arabica-bønner, Pacas og Maragogipe. Som mange andre hævder Estefani, at kaffen herfra er den bedste i verden og selv med sin lille størrelse, var El Salvador på et tidspunkt verdens fjerde største kaffeproducerende land. Der er flere grunde til at kaffen her er så god. Dels har de perfekt klima, dels god jord og gode bønner til at lave den perfekte kaffe. Jeg skal ikke stille mig til dommer – jeg har været i andre lande, hvor de lokale påstår, at deres kaffe er den bedste, men den var bestemt fantastisk. CORA-CORA-CORA Som nævnt er den officielle møntfod her, den amerikanske dollar. Og da den blev indført, kunne de lokale ikke helt finde ud af at sige ”quater” (25 cent), så det blev i stedet til ”cora”. På markedet kunne vi derfor høre en masse råbe “cora-cora-cora”. SÆT TÆNDERNE I EN PUPUSA Det er ikke en overdrivelse, at sige, at maden her i landet er fantastisk. Deres madlavning er bygget traditioner og opskrifter, der har hundredevis af år på bagen. Og deres nationalret er som nævnt pupusaer. Efter snakken med Estefany og Edwin gik jeg ind på en restaurant de anbefalede, og da jeg satte tænderne i den første. var det som om mit hoved eksploderede. Fuldstændig fantastisk – og så koster de kun ganske få ”cora”. DET DÅRLIGE VED EL SALVADOR Da jeg spørger Edwin, hvad der er det værste ved deres land, siger han med et grin, at pupusaerne gør dig tyk. Og man kan godt se, at han har fået en del af dem. På en mere seriøs note fortæller han om banderne i El Salvador. Det er der også i mange andre lande og også her handler det blot om, at holde sig væk fra visse områder. Podcast summary: The Pacific Ring of Fire is known as the area around the edges of the Pacific tectonic plate where there is concentrated earthquake and volcanic activity. These earthquakes and volcanoes happen as a result of the Pacific Plate crashing against, subducting beneath and sliding against neighbouring tectonic plates. In New Zealand, the Pacific Ring of Fire is where the Pacific Plate abuts the Indo-Australian Plate. To the east of the North Island this happens in the Hikurangi subduction zone where the Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the Indo-Australian Plate. The result is earthquakes and volcanism. To the South of the South Island there is subduction (in the opposite direction to that happening off the North Island). In between these subduction zones, through the South Island, the margin of the Pacific and Indo-Australian Plates is marked by the Alpine Fault. This has uplift (mountain building) as well as sideways movement. This mountain building process is called the Kaikoura Orogeny which started 25 million years ago. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes as it sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a series of fault lines around the ocean.

The Sinabung volcano, located on the island of Sumatra, woke up on August 20, 2010 after 400 years of hibernation. 12 thousand people were forced to abandon their homes. The next volcano explosion occurred in November of 2013. A few months later, on January 4, 2014, a new eruption forced 20,000 people to flee their homes. A month later, just as the residents returned, a new explosion occurred, in which 14 people were injured. In the recent years, the volcano has not subsided. On October 24.2017, another explosion occurred, now with a descent of pyroclastic flows - a mixture of high-temperature gases, rocks and ash, which form during the eruption and destroy all life on their path . On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start off talking about how recently archaeologists were left baffled by the "strange" discovery of ancient Roman coins buried in the ruins of a castle in Japan. The four copper coins were retrieved from soil beneath Katsuren Castle on Okinawa Island, and were originally thought to be a hoax before their true provenance was revealed. Then, a recent study by Japanese researchers has added some much-needed extra data about the phenomenon of life after death. In 2014 a questionnaire was sent out to bereaved family members of cancer patients across Japan who died in hospital, palliative care units, or at home, in order to evaluate the quality of the end-of-life care they received. Part of that nationwide survey asked about deathbed visions. Remarkably, of 2,221 survey responses, the researchers found that visions of dead loved ones were reported in 463 cases (21%). Then, a Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia couple were scratching their heads after discovering an odd-looking creature they described as a “jellified leech of some type.” Then, a 21-year-old Australian tradesman has been bitten by a venomous spider on the penis for a second time. The man was using a portable toilet on a Sydney building site on Tuesday, when he suffered a repeat of the incident five months ago. After the break, Kyle brings up the unusual mysteries and folklore that surround Mount Shasta. It is believed by many to be one of the sacred places found on Earth and it is called by some The Magical Mountain, it is the majestic Mt. Shasta, located in the Cascade Mountain Range of Northern California. Rising up from the range of picturesque mountains, in Siskiyou County, to a height of over 14,162 feet above sea level it ranks as one of the largest dormant (last eruption was incorrectly reported as being in 1786) strato-compound volcanoes (it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire) in the continental USA. Mt Shasta, often seen as a very mysterious volcanic mountain, geologically has 4 cones stratovolcanic overlapping cones, not the usual 2. Legends and mysteries abound about the ethereal aura felt and seen by some who have trekked near, around and on the natural wonder.
