Cleaning up Fukushima: Decommissioning work continues on nuclear power plant

Decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan began soon after it suffered a triple meltdown in March 2011. Fourteen years on, the work continues. This summer will mark two years since Tokyo Electric Power Company, the plant's operator, began discharging water that was used to cool the damaged reactors into the sea. In November last year, workers removed a few grams of radioactive debris from a reactor for the first time. A second extraction took place a few weeks ago. Neighbourhoods closest to the plant are still off-limits, but other areas are safe to live in. For some residents, life is slowly returning to normal. Justin McCurry, Alexis Bregere and Airi Futakuchi Report.

13 years have passed since the catastrophic events of March 11th's Great East Japan earthquake & tsunami, along with the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Plant. Fukushima, as a prefectural community, has demonstrated incredible resiliency in its recovery efforts, but unfortunately there still is a residual stigma attached to the prefecture.  One way that Fukushima has been combating that reputation is through some creative initiatives involving education through first-hand experiences. Today, the Krewe sits down with William McMichael, an integral figure in these projects, to discuss how Fukushima University's Fukushima Ambassadors Program & Hope Tourism have helped introduce the world to Fukushima in a different way. ------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. As the world continues to pray for the Japanese people, Edge of Wonder decided to honor the rich cultural history of legends and supernatural events that go far back into Japan's past. From cryptids like the evil dragon of Lake Ashinoko to mysterious encounters on Mt. Fuji, from myths and monsters to traditional folklore, there's a lot to be amazed about when it comes to the island nation. Join Ben and Rob as they discuss the Colonel Sanders Curse, whether “dog men” have been spotted in Japan, and the true history of geisha performers that western societies have misunderstood. Let's highlight all the positive, strange, and interesting facts most foreigners never knew about Japanese history. In this episode: Intense weather is definitely part of Japan's history—and so are their legends. Have you ever heard of the Colonel Sanders Curse? Why is Kentucky Fried Chicken wielding power over the Japanese people? Legends and stories are deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, but their deep traditions also go far back into history. Just take the geisha performers, who you might not know rub elbows with some of the most elite members of society. Dive deeper into some of the country's strangest legends. Mt. Fuji, for one, is one of the most interesting places on Earth, with stories of a fire goddess, a suicide forest (Aokigahara, or the Sea of Trees), hauntings, and more that will really make you wonder what's going on near that famous volcano.
