Chuck Schuldiner was never one to follow the herd. Dissatisfied with the limitations many extreme metal bands had placed on themselves, Schuldiner always strived to set Death apart lyrically and musically. Each era of the band contains a distinct sonic quality, and with the technical proficiency and introspective themes of their fourth album Human it was clear they had matured. Much of this progress can be attested to the inclusion of Cynic members Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert along with metal bass pioneer Steve Di Giorgio. Schuldiner always surrounded himself with musicians capable of elevating his music and their next album would be no different. With Di Giorgio returning on bass, Schuldiner also enlisted the skills of Dark Angel drummer Gene Hoglan as well as King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque to create an undeniably tight unit. Death entered the world famous Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida and emerged in mid-1993 with a record packed full of intricate rhythms, blistering leads, and scathing lyrics. Why so Cynic ?
This is a recording of a live podcast panel discussion that was held in front of an audience about Art and Magick recorded at the Bali Art Magick Retreat on December 19th, 2022. This was the first retreat organized by Jake and held in Tabanan in Bali and was the impetus for the formation of The Temple of the Eternal Muse. It is a conversation between visionary artist Jake Kobrin, musician and sound priestess Kristen Kreatress, musician and legendary prog metal guitarist Paul Masvidal, and somatic therapist and creativity coach Marina Kurikhina. It marks the first official episode of the TOTEM podcast. I hope you enjoy, and happy New Years! Some of the volume levels are inconsistent, and I appreciate your patience in listening to this imperfectly edited podcast.
We can't say goodbye to the spooky season just yet. This week the boys are beyond excited to welcome the progressive metal icon and pioneer Paul Masvidal of the formative band Cynic. Paul has brought to the podcast a story of seeing the 1973 supernatural horror film, The Exorcist. This movie, directed by William Friedkin, is a horror staple and a modern masterpiece. Paul and the boys get into the cursed history of this film before getting into the details of Paul's trauma inflicted by The Exorcist. Listen now for a conversation on the powers of the mind, the different layers of reality, and a cool history lesson on the intersection of metal and horror movies. This episode takes it to another level. Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube & TikTok: @WhoLetYouPod

What is it exactly to be an evolutionary sleeper? Is it tapping into the force, dreaming up your reality? For those with sleep issues and a mental illness, sleep can be a stairway to baseline. Lack of it blurs the line, between your illness or disorder and your day to day. "If letting go means letting be, and the truth beyond the mind is what I need", belts out Paul Masvidal of Cynic on the track for which this title is aptly named. Sleep helps us repair, recharge and reset. Alex Korb, author of The Upward Spiral, says one of the best insomnia fighters is gratitude. He also credits a regular sleep schedule, getting light during the day, exercising, but not before before bed. We discuss depression and sleep. Check out the Harvard study about sleep and mental health, that we mention. If you don't get enough sleep and pay attention to your mental wellness you'll be paying attention to your mental illness. Al año siguiente lanzaron el álbum recopilatorio Fate - The Best of Death.

Here is the 103rd episode of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Paul Masvidal of Cynic, Onward With Love, and Aeon Spoke. It's hard to overstate Paul Masvidal's influence on metal's development. Alongside Chuck Schuldiner, he planted the seeds of technical and progressive death metal with Death's Human album; seeds he cultivated with his own band Cynic, whose influence can be heard to this day. I spoke to Paul about his new solo project, its use of isochronic tones, and his work with sound engineer Stéphane Pigeon. And since I couldn't let the conversation go by without discussing Cynic, I asked Paul' to share his thoughts on the band's legacy and influence, its current status, and how he feels about Cynic being referred to as "yoga metal". My thanks again to Paul for speaking to me, and to you for listening. Paul Masvidal is our guest this week. We discuss his journey to the solo project simply titled Masvidal, how he needed to rediscover his identify for presenting music to the world after the recent chaos in the Cynic camp, the visual collaborations that are part of the new project, and his obligation to bring something true to the table when creating art. We also talk about the status of the next Cynic record, how the business side can affect the art of making music, his experience doing the Death to All tours, and how the songs he created with Death and Cynic eventually come to belong to the fans to keep the music alive. Petar and Brandon tackle some of the more political stories of the week including YouTube's decision to shut down Varg Vikernes's hate-filled channel and David Draiman's opinions on bands refusing to perform in Israel. We had the chance to talk to Sean Reinert right on the heels of the announcement that his seminal band, Cynic, would be calling it quits before their next tour -- which was not only a surprise to fans, but, according to Facebook, a surprise to other members of the band, too. We asked him about the recent Facebook posts he wrote about their break up, what issues lead to the current situation, the back and forth between he and Paul Masvidal, and why two people who have worked together for so long can no longer bear to be around each other. Follow us on Twitter: @BeardedApe and @GodlessSpeaks
Getting you the news before it gets stale! The crew discusses Paul Masvidal's new website http://masvidalien.com/ and also talk about current events outside of the metal community. Tune in this Wednesday for an episode featuring reviews of the new Between the Buried and Me, Amiensus, and Cradle of Filth albums. The episode will also feature music from the Amiensus offering!
On March 20, 2014 Christina Tobin interviewed Paul Masvidal, guitarist and vocalist with progressive metal band Cynic, who will be performing at Free & Equal's United We Stand Festival May 10th at UCLA. Masvidal formed Cynic as a young teen in the late '80s in Florida; was recruited by the late Chuck Schuldiner to play guitar with Death in 1991; released the first Cynic record in 1993, and broke up after several years; Masvidal went on to attend UCLA, Musicians Institute; he studied jazz, worked in television and film, released an album with a folkgroup, Æon Spoke. He regrouped with Cynic in 2008, releasing four albums in five years. He talks about how important it is to have integrity and follow your heart in your work, how Frank Zappa went up against the government on music censorship, how big Pharma is keeping people sick instead of searching for cures, and how he worked with Jim Carrey on a children’s book, How Roland Rolls. Discussing the spiritual path of Cynic’s music (Paul is a Buddhist), he observes that “Everything that we think is working against us is actually a tool to help us grow.” Masvidal discusses his volunteer work with terminally ill people, helping them cope, how rewarding it is to “be of service to the planet and to your fellow humans.” Christina Tobin urges listeners to visit CynicOnline.com. “The more we support his music the more he can give back to the community.”
Paul Masvidal of Cynic is our guest this week. We have a long chat about his childhood, anger issues, his career as a writer for television and movies, the new Cynic album and why Focus broke up the band nearly 20 years ago. Chuck and Godless also talk about the importance of bands getting an accountant and deciding up front how to divide up the workload in light of the current situation Machine Head find themselves in, with former bassist Adam Duce suing the band. We also get stoked for the upcoming 70K Tons of Metal cruise this week. Song:Cynic – "Kindly Bent to Free Us"
