Much has been speculated about whether or not Brian Laundrie could have been involved in the double homicide that took the lives of Kylen and Crystal. There are many oddities and coincidences between Brian and Kylen and Crystal – such as Brian's close proximity to Kylen and Crystal, the overlapping dates in the small town of Moab, and the fact that three women were murdered within a couple weeks of each other. The last point especially stands out considering that there were only three murders in Moab over a span of 14 years – from 2006 to 2019. To have three murders within a couple of weeks seems very suspicious – especially with Brian in the vicinity. “So yeah, I was a neckroll guy” Paul Schulte was a 4-year letter winner at Iowa State (1988-1991) in the heyday of the Big 8 Conference, where he played against Colorado and Nebraska when they were powerhouse programs. There can hardly be a more overlooked role than that of the wedge buster. Paul tells of his four years on the kickoff team running straight down the field and taking it to whoever was unlucky enough to get in his way. Among his kickoff team highlights was trying to take down one of the best ball carriers in the history of football, Barry Sanders. After two years just on special teams, Paul became the starting tight end and burned his name into the memory of every Rice Owl football fan. In addition to his tales as a player, Paul shares his perspective on Iowa State football today, the upcoming bowl game, and compares football today to his time in the Big 8. Episode 88 is about a lot more than football, though. Paul is a Baconfest icon and considers himself a pirate. He explains why brown liquor is his drink of choice, why he wants to fight Joe Rogan, Boogie Cousins, and Dwight Howard, and just how important costume choices are at Baconfest. Trust us, there are too many great stories on too many different topics this week. This week breaks the mold of a Moonlight interview. Listen in as Paul Schulte plays the role of wedge buster one more time and, as Pete Taylor would say, absolutely takes over this podcast.

For a discussion on Chinese Fintech, the Expert Series hosted Paul Schulte, of Schulte Research. Before starting Schulte Research, Paul has had a long career in finance, at the buy-side working for Lehman, Nomura, and CCB, among others, and at a Tiger Cub hedge fund, and he also worked at the White House and in academia. Paul Schulte has done a deep dive in all facets of fintech and has researched how companies are making the transition from the physical world into the digital world, and which country is leading the race; the US tech giants, or their Chinese peers. The answer, as you can see from the title, is that China is a generation ahead, and in our fascinating discussion you will hear why.
Today's episode is my conversation with Paul Schulte, a wheelchair basketball player. He has played in five world championships, and three paralympics throughout his career, and also happens to be a childhood friend of mine. Paul and I grew up in the same little town in Michigan, and our families were/are very close. I remember the day that he talks about when he and his mom and brother had their accident. I was very young, but it is one of the only times I ever witnessed my big brother cry. Yet, looking back over the years, I don't think I have ever felt like Paul let his wheelchair limit him, or make it an excuse. His story is inspiring, to say the least. One fond memory I have is the year our church had a pioneer trek for the youth in our area. We hiked over twenty miles over two days in sweltering heat, up and down hills, across plains with no shade, and through forests. A lot of people struggled with the heat, and blisters, and even a giant storm that blew around our camp one night. Paul never missed a beat and trekked along with the strongest of us. A few nuggets I got out of this discussion: Paul's parent's support matched his excitement for a sport. Paul was fueled by his excitement when he saw himself getting better at a sport. He liked challenge. Mentors were in front of him, living life in an active way that inspired him to follow. Life is a product of your own decisions. Your life is what you make of it, and is a reflection of your daily decision and habits. Everyone's passion has value. When looking to see what a child's passion is, wait, watch, and see what they gravitate towards. Visualize the future. Today's patterns shape your tomorrows. Paul's dad was his mentor, he got Paul excited about his goals, and fostered a vision for Paul rather than create one for him. The one thing that inspires athletes when it comes to family... On today's episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, Duane talks with Paul Schulte, the author of We Agnostics: How William James, Father of American Psychology, Advanced A Spiritual Solution to Addiction: How a Venerated Harvard Doctor Inspired the 12 Step Movement. Paul is going to talk about Williams James's philosophy, what he brought to addiction treatment and addiction care, and how his work strongly influenced the work of Bill Wilson, founder of the 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous. He talks about how William James was able to articulate the theme he saw in human change – something that has been talked about in religious circles and spirituality for over 3,000 years. It's the theme of a person who is lost, feels broken, and ultimately is able to find serenity and calmness. With a degree in drug and alcohol addiction counseling, Paul did an internship at the UCLA School of Medicine. There, he was drawn into what was going on with the different types of treatment and the influences of the 12-step movement. He came across William James' Book, The Varieties of Religious Experience, which has had a tremendous influence on American life. Paul very much resonated with William's experiences, how he had developed all of his ideas about the unconscious, and where these urges to suddenly stop what seems like a chronic behavior comes from in humans.William questions what causes these transformations in humans. Way before Freud developed his idea of the subconscious, William was one of the early pioneers of the subconscious and the desire to move towards a new form of regeneration of the human spirit coming from the subconscious. In this episode, you will hear:How Paul resonated with William JamesThe universality of the human conditionThe 3 marks of the soul-sickThe two-fold mark of a spiritual experienceWhy William James says we are all agnosticHow Bill W. adopted the idea of William JamesBeautiful analogies in William's book that describes the human experience and its similarities to the 12-step movementDealing with chaotic emotions and purging fear Not excusing the behavior but forgiving itThe sense of regenerationKey Quotes:[06:19] - “William James was on to something about the obsession of the mind. But certainly, the spiritual element of trying to get cleaned up. That was a very big quantum leap in the understanding of addiction.”[10:09] - “I had this thing in me, this weird soul-sickness in the way before I picked up my first drink."[14:20] - “That feeling of self-loathing, and alienation and fear, which are basically the three marks of that soul sick.”[14:39] - “The mark of a spiritual experience is twofold. One, life gets bigger. And number two, we feel like we belong and that there's a union with other people.”[23:26] - “We're not falling apart, when we think we're falling apart, we're actually falling together.”[27:05] - “It's from this sense of destitution, that we rebuild ourselves, and when all the shams and all the lies of dishonesty are peeled away."[30:50] - "We don't go around excusing behavior. We forgive the behavior."[33:57] - “The fundamental point of helping others is self-forgetfulness, and the more that we engage in self-forgetfulness, the better off we are going to be because we get away from that oppressive ego, which wants to reassert itself.”Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
