Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Platinum Glove third baseman Matt Chapman is officially a member of the San Francisco Giants. The Giants and Chapman were long thought to be a perfect match, and on Sunday, the three-year, $54M deal with opt outs was officially announced. Matt Chapman's deal with the Giants also includes a previously-unreported $20M fourth-year mutual option with a $1M buyout. What is Chapman's impact on the Giants? How do the SF Giants now stack up in a National League with quite a bit of parity outside of the top two and bottom two teams. Do the Giants need to make one more move, namely for a starting pitcher? Their starting rotation outside of Logan Webb has upside and is intriguing, but it's a largely unproven group and it's already taken some injury hits.Is Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery the answer? Probably so. Will the San Francisco Giants be willing and able to land either player? The Giants' addition of Chapman pushes them close to the first luxury tax threshold of $237M. J.D. Davis doesn't really fit the roster anymore and may very well be traded, which would free up $6.9M (if a team assumed his whole contract). Michael Conforto is another under-the-radar trade candidate given his $18M salary and the SF Giants' potential desire to clear payroll space in order to add a frontline starter that they appear to need in order to complete what would be a fantastic offseason.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
In this episode, Miles predicts who will win the big awards this year in the AL and NL - MVP, Cy Young, and Platinum Glove. You can ask a question or leave a comment for Little Slugger at littlesluggerpodcast@gmail.com
Did Gerrit Cole really deserve a unanimous Cy Young award? Also, are you surprised that Fernando Tatis Jr. won the Platinum Glove award for 2023?
EP 116: Alex and Travis breakdown the Cubs hiring Craig Counsell, the Angels hiring Ron Washington, and all the other managerial moves across MLB to start the offseason. Then, they share their thoughts on the recently announced Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Cy Young Awards, before analyzing this season's AL and NL Platinum Glove award winners. Alex and Travis close with a discussion about recent revelations about the Angels' internal turnover and anti-analytic developments within their organization.
It was a “pretty fun day” for Stephen Vogt, named manager for the Guards, less so for David Ross in the surprise loss of his CHI gig, and downright polarizing in regards to Craig Counsell's historic contract prompting another manager to muse about unionization. The Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards lead Mauricio Dubón for multiple Honduran firsts, Ha Seong Kim to a first for Asian-born MLB players, and a Pottymouth first as she finally remembered to vote for Platinum Glove. We ponder the steady increase in Tommy John surgeries (more diagnoses or more stress on arms?) and consider staying away from where GMs gather to avoid stomach bugs. Oakland's mayor incorporates swag and economic greed in her appeal to owners to vote against an A's move to Vegas. Nelson Cruz concludes his LIDOM farewell tour in time for Citifield to welcome Los Tigres del Licey and Las Águilas Cibaeñas for a three game series to packed houses. Rush's Geddy Lee, with a surprising amount of baseball cred, prepares to auction 300 items from his stunning collection of baseball memorabilia. Over the weekend, Rawlings finally announced the winners of their Platinum Glove awards that were voted on by the fans. Major League Baseball players may receive an award for outstanding defense at their position. These are called Gold Gloves. One is awarded for each position on the field in each league. Perhaps less well known is the Platinum Glove. Only one is awarded in each league each year. It recognizes the best defensive player in that league. Only a few players have won the Platinum Glove. Only five have won it more than once. Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals won his sixth straight Platinum Glove this year. If you tried to recount all the good plays Arenado performed over the past six seasons, you'd be hard pressed to name them all. The award is not about one outstanding play. It is given to the best player who constantly makes great plays. A similar problem exists when discussing God. He did spectacular things in creating the world and raising Jesus from the dead . But he has performed many more outstanding acts. That's what Psalms 40:5 says, “Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.” (NIV) This week we're focused on trusting God to rescue us from problems. This verse tells us why we can trust him. He has performed more wonders than we can recount.

The Dodgers and the Padres are set for a rematch of the 2020 NLDS with familiar faces and new characters in place. We break down everything to do with these two teams in our annual monster NLDS preview show. First on the docket, a short look back at the biggest moments from the Wild Card slate of games including the Mariners' shocking come-from-behind win, Max Scherzer getting lit up, and accusations of cheating involving Joe Musgrove. The meat of our show is a deep dive position by position break down to identify who holds the advantage all around the diamond and on the mound. We did our best to not be too biased, but the Dodgers checked the box in a number of spots. Where San Diego holds the clear advantage is at third base with Manny Machado and his Platinum Glove... but even Justin Turner can hold his own in this arguement. Finally, our starting lineup predictions and series predictions for this best-of-five NL West showdown. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Alex and Travis open by covering some more minor signings and trades that have occurred in the last week. Then they go over their thoughts on all of the Gold Glove, Platinum Glove, and Sliver Slugger award winners. Jeff Passan published a list of the biggest potential trade pieces this offseason, so Alex and Travis broke down what teams make sense to push for some of these difference maker players. Vladimir Guerrero Jr and MLB Network analysts had a discussion on launch angle so Alex and Travis weighed in on that as well. They then wrapped up the episode by giving their current MLB Power Rankings considering all of the free agents on the market at the moment.

Starling Marte is 33 years old, but he still has elite speed and plenty of teams are lining up for his services. Freddie Freeman is a free agent, but nobody believes he'll play anywhere but Atlanta.
