Directed by Yash Chopra, with recreated music by the late, great Madan Mohan, VEER ZAARA (2004) is the kind of old-school Bollywood filmmaking you'd be hard-pressed to find today. Starring Shahrukh Khan as an Indian who falls in love with a Pakistani, played by Preity Zinta, and ably supported by a stunning cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Manoj Bajpayee, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Kirron Kher, Divya Dutta, and Zora Sehgal, Veer Zaara is a visual feast for more reasons than one. Join us as we dive into this movie and explore why it appears to have all but disappeared from pop culture, and how this might be that rare film that improves in hindsight. Preity Zinta’s character doesn’t seem to have standards when it comes to men.The director claims this is not an Indian version of E.T. which is a pretty bold AF thing to say.It is possible that there is an entire race of aliens that have the Hrithik Roshan double thumb. All this and more on Today’s episode where I talk about Karan ArjunFollow me on Instagram:@kushparmFollow Our Parent Podcast@mildmanneredtimidEmail us at mmtyabish@gmail.com

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast has taken its time, but we’ve finally arrived at the film that forever changed the Hindi film industry: 2001’s DIL CHAHTA HAI. Farhan Akhtar’s debut feature had a glitzy starcast: Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Preity Zinta, Ayub Khan, Sonali Kulkarni, Suhasini Mulay, and the by-now patented list of talented supporting actors. Everything from the costumes (super trendy at the time), to the dialogues (a stark departure from what the rest of Hindi filmdom sounded like), to cinematography (fresh and natural), to the music (still a bop), left an impact. It changed the trajectory of several careers and gave others an opportunity to showcase their talents in a way few Hindu films have been able to. Join us for a nostalgic deep dive into shared joys and surprising traumas. At one point in Bhaiaji Superhit, we arrive at a flashback in which Sunny Deol, as the uneducated Banaras don named Bhaiaji is serenading his wife, Sapna played by Preity Zinta, by reciting Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. He's wearing a shiny, black velvet coat and stumbling over the English. It was at this precise moment that I started to feel more pain for Sunny than I was feeling for myself. Of course Bhaiaji Superhit isn't his tragedy alone though he does do the heavy-lifting. Preity returns as leading lady after five years. As Sapna, she gets to speak mangled English and have temper tantrums each time she sees her husband talking to a woman. Ameesha plays a Bollywood diva who gets Bhaiaji into trouble.

On Episode 19 of the Khandaan podcast, we continue our limited edition run of favorites with everybody’s preferred incendiary film critic, Raja Sen. A reviewer with Hindustan Times and the author of a children’s book based on The Godfather (!), The Best Baker in the World, Raja has chosen Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se (1998) to discuss. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a brand new restored print available on Netflix, this movie threw up some interesting reactions on the panel. Raja maintains that this is Shahrukh Khan’s best and most natural performance to date, but Sujoy and Amrita had issues with the film on a personal and political level. Asim was too dazzled by Preity Zinta to care. Starring Manisha Koirala as a beautiful young terrorist from India’s Northeast, SRK as a radio journalist, and Preity in her breakout debut as the fresh young thing next door, Dil Se has garnered quite a reputation over the years even though it underperformed upon release. We discuss this phase of SRK’s career, our issues with the performances, and of course no episode of Khandaan is complete without a little gossip. We also discuss some of the new releases over the past fortnight – from the Spiderman video game to Stree, which is garnering stellar reviews (including one from Raja). We also touch upon Amazon’s Jack Ryan, a series that Asim and Amrita took serious issue with. If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at upodcasting@gmail.com
Welcome to Episode 12 of the Khandaan Podcast! This week we’re discussing 2006’s Jaan-e-Mann, starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Preity Zinta. While JEM has gained a bit of a cult following in the years since its release, it was a disastrous flop when it came out. An uneasy marriage between troubling Bollywood stereotypes and a whimsical ode to classic Hollywood musicals, JEM is by turns fantastic and repulsive. Asim, Sujoy and Amrita have plenty to discuss when it comes to the themes of the film, its reception, the stars, the makers and its place in Bollywood history. Meanwhile, we discuss a few housekeeping items of interest to our loyal listeners and discuss a few current events such as the reactions to the Race 3 trailer, Salman Khan’s increasingly visible disinterest in song-and-dance routines, and a trio of remarkable interviews: one in which Madhuri Dixit can barely hide her disdain for Rajeev Masand; and two in which [Anupama Chopra skillfully drew out Madhuri](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLQdSk2EcY&feature=youtu.be) and [Bobby Deol,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLQdSk2EcY&feature=youtu.be) who dominated the chatter cycle this week with a highly emotional response. Don’t miss the amazing gifs by Sujoy on our Upodcast Twitter feed! We also recommend this fun [Madhuri interview by AIB](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG-9BZiocYg&feature=youtu.be)! Rajiv Satyal is a Los Angeles-based comedian/host. His TV-clean act has made him one of the most versatile comedians working today. He began his career in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Rajiv had an unusual entry into standup, doing his act for then-World No. 1 tennis player Pete Sampras in a locker room. Satyal has some interesting claims to fame: he opened for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of 17,000 people. He made the massively viral I AM INDIAN video, which was shared by Bollywood stars and used to introduce the Indian Prime Minister in Shanghai and Dubai. He has opened for Russell Peters more than any other Indian comedian. Rajiv even hosted Dave Chappelle’s very first show after his much-publicized African hiatus. Satyal performs weekly at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood. He has garnered 50 million+ online views and been featured on/in NBC, NPR, Nickelodeon, Fx, Netflix, Bob & Tom, Times Now, Zee TV, Pandora, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Variety, Advertising Age, The Times of India, The Huffington Post, and The LA Times. Rajiv has performed on three continents. He co-created the world-touring Make Chai Not War, a Hindu/Muslim stand-up show. The U.S. State Dept. sponsored it, sending it to seven cities in India. The show became part of the Congressional Record after being mentioned on Capitol Hill to Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. This University of Cincinnati engineer and former P&G marketer has done stand-up at more than 100 colleges. He named his alma mater’s online radio station “Bearcast,” launched/managed a Miss India America’s career, and has spoken to audiences from Fortune 500 companies to NFL players on innovation, diversity, and personal branding. His corporate clients include P&G (10 times), GE (7 times), Google, General Mills, Quaker, Toyota, Cisco and more. He runs a consulting business called the Standpoint Agency, which helps marketers generate insights for their brands. He gave a TEDx Talk, “The Jester Is King,” in March 2016. Satyal has acted in national commercials and in TV shows. He has recorded 130 episodes of his podcast, The TanGent Show, and has interviewed everyone from Deepak Chopra to Seth Godin to Preity Zinta. In his spare time, Rajiv writes TV ads, performs improv, and produces sketches for Culture Machine’s #BeingIndian channel. Rajiv wrote No Man’s Land, a 100-minute one-person show about his dating life that sold out all performances from LA to NY to San Francisco to Cincinnati. This show actually led to Satyal’s marriage, which itself had a comedic arc: Rajiv proposed to his girlfriend while opening for Kevin Nealon, and at his wedding, Russell Peters finally opened for him.
