Jaston Williams is an American humorist, playwright, actor, director, producer, essayist and novelist. He is best known as the co-author and co-actor of the Greater Tuna quartet of plays. Greater Tuna is the first in a series of four comedic plays (followed by A Tuna Christmas, Red, White and Tuna, and Tuna Does Vegas), are each set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the "third-smallest" town in the state. In 1971, Williams left Texas Tech University and moved to San Antonio to begin his acting career, where he joined the "First Repertory Company in San Antonio." He gained footing in the industry with the Taos Magic Mirror Players and TransAct Theatre of Austin. Along the way, he collected material for volumes of plays, essays and other writings. One of his popular true-to-life stories featured in his one-man show, I'm Not Lying, is a counterculture experience involving Williams wearing a chicken suit and performing at a Renaissance Fair at Dennis Hopper's mansion in Taos. Williams' performances have played on and off Broadway at the Kennedy Center, the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and all over America. Jaston received the L.A. Dramalogue Award for both Greater Tuna and A Tuna Christmas. A Tuna Christmas was published in "Best Plays of 1995." For several years, he toured in Larry Shue's The Foreigner. He performed in The Fantasticks and directed the musical, Bad Girls Upset by The Truth. Jaston received the Texas Governor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts by a Native Texan, and has performed command performances at the White House on three occasions. He has appeared at the State Theatre in Eugene Ionesco's The Chairs and at Zachary Scott Theatre in Jay Preston Allen's Tru, for which he received the Austin Critics Table Award for Best Actor in a drama. He appeared at Zachary Scott Theatre in The Laramie Project. Awards and nominations In 2018, Williams received the national Marquee Award, a lifetime achievement award, from the League of Historic American Theatres. Williams has received five nominations for the Helen Hayes Award in Washington, D. C., the Los Angeles Drama-Logue Award for acting and writing, the San Francisco Bay Critics Award for acting and writing, He has also received the Distinguished Alumni Award at Texas Tech University (2015), the Texas Governor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts, and, along with Joe Sears, the first Paramount Theatre Marquee Walk of Fame Award. Jaston is the recipient of the 2013 Texas Medal of the Arts and has been inducted into the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock. Jaston is the son of a West Texas farmer and a school teacher, (James P. Williams and Vivian Lindley), He was born in El Paso, Texas, and spent his first six years on a farm between Valentine and Van Horn, Texas. His family moved to Olton, Texas, and then to Crosbyton, where he graduated from Crosbyton High School. He attended San Jacinto College, Texas State University and Texas Tech University. Williams was married to his high school girlfriend, Larita Stephens from 1971 to1973, and they had one son, Patrick Shane Williams (b.May 9, 1971). Patrick died in an automobile accident on December 27, 1995. Jaston's older brother, Corky Williams, was a cowboy poet, actor and writer. In an interview with the Washington Post, Williams reminisces about his late mother, "one of the toughest, funniest and occasionally meanest people I've ever known"; his brother, who "talks like Yosemite Sam"; his mother's best girlfriend, a pilot with emphysema who had to stop smoking for months every time she wanted to fly (something about the oxygen); and that lady's son, a hairdresser who worked in the big city but regularly came back home and fixed all the women up with identical helmet hair ("you need it, what with that wind!"). In 2007, Williams married Dr. Kevin Mooney, a musicologist who teaches at Texas State University, and they have one son, Song Williams. “Here was a jazz musician who had never smoked weed, never been arrested,” Williams says of his husband, Kevin. “And I had never had a boyfriend who hadn't been on the Post Office wall.” But it worked out, and the two eventually adopted a 7-year-old Chinese boy with special needs. Song, 21, graduated from Lockhart (Texas) High School in 2019, lives with his fathers, and is the light of their lives. Williams says that they got the best child in China, out of millions.

He explains the “chain of trust” in medical school training and academia and how it can lead to a broken system and low-quality procedures being used on a massive scale. Additionally, Dr Levine's depth perspective on love, intimacy and what makes us human reflects the great wisdom he has gained from over fifty years working as a psychiatrist. This episode of Mastering Public Service is with Connie Schmidt, the Election Commissioner for Johnson County Kansas, the largest county in the state. Connie served as the election commissioner from 1995 to 2005 before owning and running an election consulting business that has provided consulting services to numerous local and state agencies. Connie was reappointed by the Secretary of State to serve as Election Commissioner for Johnson County in February 2020 and has worked in local government in Johnson County for a total of 31 years and previously served as City Clerk for the City of Merriam, Kansas. In December 2004 she received the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) Medallion Award for outstanding service to American democracy. In August 2005 received a Lifetime Membership Award from the Election Center, Inc. and in August 2007 received the Election Hall of Fame Award from The Election Center Inc. Its safe to say that she knows more than just a little bit about the administration of elections and possibly more than anyone in the state and probably the region. There are so many things about the administration of elections that most of us do not know and she helps makes the how elections are run a lot clearer. In addition to a very useful discussion about election administration we discuss her career and her love for public service.

Bob tweeted at Greg Gutfield that Black Lives Matter doesn't condemn the violence. Then Juan Williams repeated his favorite lie, saying "Everyone condemns the violence." So 24 hours after Bob's frustrated tweet, Gutfield finally interrupted Williams' lie challenging him, "How about Black Lives Matter?" Williams then about blew his top and didn't answer. Because BLM not only doesn't condemn the violence, but actually advocates killing cops, the families of officers shot and murdered should file lawsuits against Melinda Gates, Nike, LeBron James, and the others Bob mentions in today's program. Why? Because they promote and even fund an organization that not only refuses to condemn but that actually advocates killing cops. For the second half of the program, Bob talks about the use of light and vision as metaphors for understanding and links that then to the absurdity of the materialist claim that vision systems could arise by naturalistic means in biological organisms. * Wrote about Chlorquine before Chloroquine was Cool: Enjoy this rerun of our April 6th 2020 show! The history of chloroquine and malaria provides vital insight into the theory of evolution and the possible future COVID-19. As a public service during the coronavirus pandemic and brought to you by the Crawford family of radio stations, RSR co-host Bob Enyart interviews famed biochemist Michael Behe, groundbreaking author of Darwin's Black Box, The Edge of Evolution, and Darwin Devolves. Dr. Behe helped launch the worldwide intelligent design movement of Ph.D. scientists exposing the failure of the theory of evolution to explain life's diversity. He's written on the history of chloroquine and its effect on the protozoa pathogen that causes malaria (a Plasmodium). That fascinating account reveals a stunning defect in the theory of evolution and also alerts us to the clear possibility that SARS-CoV-2 may mutate, and if so, it could create a second wave of challenging infections. * Programming Notes: - In 2019 RSR interviewed Dr. Behe on Darwin Devloves - Today we aired two programs. Just fyi, the first one is here! - We have drug updates including on the controversy at rsr.org/hcq. Today's Resource: Does God Exist? (Debate)Bob Enyart: pastors Denver Bible Church. The story of how Andy met Dennis Chambers started with a music performance he will never forget! Today, we learn how Dennis Chambers became the legendary drummer he is today. From his earliest memories of copying records, on a toy drum kit, to slinging tracks with the likes of John Scofield and Miles Davis, Dennis has a story to tell about everything and you won't stop listening! Like the music he plays, Dennis shares stories with a rhythm and flow that is music to our ears. Though Dennis is a self-taught musician, he states he learned from the best. Dennis has jammed with the likes of P Funk, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clark, and Carlos Santana. Across the decades, across jazz, funk, soul, and rock and roll, Dennis has become a master chameleon of rhythm and style. While seeming completely calm and in control of his craft, Dennis can light up a stadium, like he did beginning as a teenager, during his Parliament Funkadelic days.. His experiences and memories could fill a book, but for now, we'll settle with a podcast episode. Listen to hear all of these stories of music and soul unfold. Episode Highlights: Dennis shares how he remains so very calm in the middle of mind-bending performances. With a Motown singer mom, music was in Dennis' DNA. Dennis first picked up a stick when he was 3 years old, and got his first drum kit when he was 4. We discuss how Dennis got his professional start at a very young age. Finding your sound is a constantly evolving process. Dennis shares all of his early influences and inspirations. Playing with P Funk gave him incredible exposure. Hear some of Dennis' favorite bass players to work with – he has worked with some of the greats! What's new on the horizon for Dennis. Ted Kergan, one of Sonic’s most successful franchisees in the U. S., began his career with SONIC in 1977 as general manager of an Alexandria, LA location. Today, Ted is CEO of Kergan Bros. Sonic, which owns 60 Sonic locations across Central and South Louisiana, and employs more than 4,000 people each year. In 2015, Ted was bestowed the Troy Smith Hall of Fame Award given to a franchisee who has worked with Sonic for a noteworthy duration and has made a significant contribution in terms of leadership, growth, positive influence, and brand image. Ted's love for Sonic is palpable, and he attributes his success in the company to his dedicated and longtime employees who make it happen. Between his managers and assistant managers, the employees collectively bring over 1000 years of experience to the job. In 2015, Ted was bestowed the Troy Smith Hall of Fame Award given to a franchisee who has worked with Sonic for a noteworthy duration and has made a significant contribution in terms of leadership, growth, positive influence, and brand image. Pictured from left: Sonic CEO Cliff Hudson, Ann Kergan, Ted Kergan. Sonic is a fun company and offers a solid business plan. Troy Smith founded Sonic in 1953 and always gave his managers the opportunity to be equity partners. Ted Kergan has followed Smith's example and this generosity has led to lasting employee loyalty. There are 3600 Sonic locations in the U. S. and successful managers can make around $150,000 per year; the most successful manager in the U. S. is reported to make $250,000 per year. Ted recommends that anyone looking to purchase a franchise opportunity should take a close look at the business plan and select a company that has a name recognition so that people will flock to the door the day it opens for business. Many good concepts are unknown to the general public and it can be risky investing in an unknown name that will not generate adequate traffic. Sonic was purchased by Inspire Brand in 2018 for $2.3 Billion; Inspire also owns Arby's, Buffalo Wild Wings and Jimmy John's Restaurants. Economies of scale are recognized in food purchases, attorney costs, etc. by franchisees associated with Sonic and Inspire, and Ted finds the costs associated with franchise royalties are greatly outweighed by savings the franchisees enjoy. Kergan Bros. Sonics has sponsored the annual Sonic Christmas Parade in Lafayette since 2003. An annual and beloved affair with over 70 participants, the parade was originally started by the Abdalla family in 1962. Santa waving to the crowd in the Sonic Christmas ParadeThe Sonic Christmas Parade is an annual event held free for the community. Ted also has a deeply moving and personal story to share, about his brother, Gary, who originally got Ted to move to Louisiana to join the Sonic team. Gary’s life came to an untimely and mysterious end on November 28, 1984. Ted’s journey to find out what happened to his brother is recounted in the compelling book, “My Brother’s Keeper, A Thirty-Year Quest to Bring Two Killers To Justice,” written by Chris Russo Blackwood. Ted Kergan was born in Detroit, Michigan and was raised with his older brother and sister by his mother. Ted's father died the day after he was born and his mother worked hard as a seamstress to make ends meet. The children were close, especially Gary and Ted, who had their own special language where they would communicate using only the first letter of words. Gary meant the world to Ted and was always there for him to guide and protect him. When Ted was fifteen, his mother couldn't sew any more due to arthritis, and she sold their family home so that she could raise funds to purchase a franchise business. Ted accompanied her and the opportunity to learn about business ignited a fire in him. He recounted that he attended college for one day and then dropped out to work, because of necessity and also because he was more interested in making money.

Giants, this is episode #67! Today’s guest is a contemporary Cuban-American artist and portrait painter, best known for his ‘Syncretism’, a term he coined in 2011 to describe paintings where he presents two or more art tendencies in aesthetic balance. His work harmonises both classical and modern interpretations juxtaposed within each painting. When he moved to America with his family aged 12, he got the real taste for the American Dream: “The worst thing that could happen in America was always a luxury in comparison to the Cuban lifestyle” (where he’s originally from). He studied at the Miami Dade College, then attended the New World School of the Arts for a period of time and even relocated to Florence for further painting education. The artist has received numerous accolades around the world, including the Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at the Academy of Realist Art Boston, First Prize at the Grand Central Academy Portrait Competition, The Hall of Fame Award at Miami Dade College and First Place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some of the topics we spoke about include: Advice for people wanting to make a living as an artist How his physical activity feeds in with his life as a painter The role of an artist in the age of technology And the business side of being a painter. So if you’re thinking about becoming a full-time artist, or looking for ways to channel your creativity, then this is for you – as we uncover what makes an artist thrive. Late January is the dog days of Hollywood's long, expensive awards season. Smaller events unfurl several times a week, and every win becomes a chance to further handicap the Oscar chances for major contenders. This past week, the Final Draft Awards honored Callie Khouri, who wrote "Thelma & Louise" and created the "Nashville" TV series with its Hall of Fame Award. The next night, the Lumiere Awards unspooled a few miles away, on the lot of a different movie studio, and handed out a lot more statues. And there, Tom Cruise surprised even the man being honored, the writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, who is his long-time collaborator. I talked with Khouri and captured Cruise and McQuarrie all talking about the joys and challenges of making movies for this episode of Bloom in Tech. Give a listen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/support

Recently I sat down with Charlie Feld, who is currently the founder and CEO of The Feld Group Institute but has had a career as long as there has been an IT industry and is considered the First CIO in corporate America. We cover a number of great topics during our conversation which I have broken out into two episodes. This episode, episode #21, of Custom Made, and next week's episode - episode #22. If you haven’t already subscribed to Custom Made, make sure you do to catch part two and all of our previous episodes. During his extraordinary 50-year career, Charlie has been committed to helping organizations and executives achieve IT-driven transformation. He has been frequently featured in the media, and has received numerous awards and accolades in recognition of his profound influence upon the IT industry, including the Smithsonian Award for Technology Excellence, the Carnegie Mellon Award for Innovative Technology, inducted into CIO magazine’s CIO Hall of Fame and the Tech Titans Hall of Fame Award, as well as Dallas CIO’s Leadership Award. Early in his career while he was as at Frito-Lay from 1981-1992 Charlie rose to the top of the IT function, where he became one of the first outstanding CIOs in corporate America. As Charlie overcame the early challenges of the post and developed a mature IT department, he found that he longed for the challenge of the early days once again. So he elected to found his own firm, The Feld Group, where he developed one of the first frameworks for IT organizations and provides temporary CIO services for large enterprise organizations like Southwest Airlines, Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, Delta, FedEx, EDS, and BNSF. You can find more information about Charlie at The Feld Group Institute, and in the two books Charlie has written, The Blind Spot: A Leader’s Guide to IT-Enabled Business Transformation and The Calloway Way: Results & Integrity - I’ll include links to all of these in the show notes at Dialexa.com On this weeks episode Charlie discusses his journey as the first CIO in corporate America, how the IT industry lacked a formal framework, and how IT needs to handle the speed of change for their organizations to be successful. Whilst many industries such as engineering, finance, sales, marketing, or manufacturing has existed for centuries, IT has only been part of a business for decades and still has a way to become a mature profession. Charlie shares how he has spent his career defining one of the first frameworks and a common language for the IT organization, and influencing the role of the CIO to change how IT can capitalize on the rate of change major organizations have to manage in order to be successful and avoid disruption. Charlie shares examples of where he has driven large transformation and modernization initiatives to stabilize enterprise organizations by addressing legacy IT operations and planning/building for change. From his time at Frito-Lay, Charlie shares three principles he learned from his conversations with founder Herman Lay: 1) Seek to understand a company in its simplest form 2) Nothing good ever happens in a warehouse 3) Look to the frontline people, and understand that are doing the work When discussing the speed of change, Charlie shares an experience that allowed him to try to better predict change. To be a good leader you need to be able to pull from all three of these perspectives: Experience - The core way people have learned for centuries Analytics - The ability to break down a problem Stepping-back - The ability to zoom-out recognize patterns Finally, Charlie discusses how we are only limited by our imagination when it comes to IT - which can be a challenge for some technology and engineering leaders. Technology today is almost limitless, and we have entered the Imagination Age. Be sure to tweet at me (https://twitter.com/dougplatts) and let me know what you think of the show.

Most people resort to medication but my guest today, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, will teach us how to reverse heart disease through diet. In fact, he has the longest running track record for success. Early Years Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn was a Yale undergraduate and went to medical school at the Western Reserve University. He took an internship at the Cleveland Clinic and decided to go into General Surgery. He has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. He has also published the most amount of studies over the past 12 years with remarkable results. After his training, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn went to become an Army surgeon two years after. From the training in Vietnam, he was offered a position in the Department of General Surgery in the Cleveland Clinic. Career Shift Halfway through his stint at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn felt increasingly disillusioned. I was doing a lot of surgeries connected with breast cancer and yet he thought he was doing absolutely nothing to the next unsuspecting victims. “That led me through a bit of global research. In rural Japan in the 1950s, breast cancer was infrequently identified. In the entire nation of Japan in the late 50s, cardiovascular disease was virtually non-existent,” shares Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Twelve-Year Study On Heart Disease Shortly after, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn embarked on extensive research on everything there is to know about heart disease and how to prevent and reverse it. It was a long process, but ultimately, the study produced significant results on how we can reverse it naturally through diet. “I was active as a surgeon, and I was not a trained psychologist. For the first five years, I saw every one of these patients every two weeks,” Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn said. “We checked their weight and blood pressure. We saw significant progress. They lost weight, symptoms disappeared, and we reversed the disease.” Significant Findings The study confirmed that coronary artery disease is the leading killer in the United States. But it is rarely found in cultures whose diet primarily include lentils, grains, vegetables, fruit, and legumes. This is why Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn recommends a similar diet to his patients. “The diet I chose was extracted from those nations where the disease is virtually non-existent like Okinawa in Japan, Euro-China, New Guinea, Central Africa and Northern Mexico. Those countries don’t have the cardiovascular disease because they thrive on whole foods nutrition,” said Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn also says that many experts have agreed that heart disease does not primarily originate from genes nor stress, but rather from nutrition. During the five-year mark of the study, patients who followed a plant-based diet with 10% fat and taking cholesterol-lowering medication showed excellent results. Lipid levels fell, symptoms lessened, and tests showed that their heart disease became stabilized. Some cases even showed a reverse from heart disease. Revision In Diet When you have heart disease, it also injures the endothelial lining of the arteries. It turns out that food containing oils, dairy, fish, meat, chicken, sugar, and caffeine deplete mechanisms that protect the endothelium. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn also says that the typical Western diet also decreases the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is an essential part of the equation because it protects our blood vessels. “We have to have a safe and adequate amount of nitric oxide because it protects the wall of the arteries. It protects us from developing high blood pressure and hypertension as well as blockages or plaques,” said Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Success Rate Upon hitting the 12-year mark of the study, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn shares that he has gathered enough data to prove that changing to the right kind of diet works. Patients were asked to eliminate oil, dairy products, and all types of meat including chicken and fish. A lot of patients went back to standard care or entirely did not need medication. The results of the study showed that arrest and reversal therapy stops coronary atherosclerosis. By complementing a plant-based diet with medication, it achieves better results than changing only the diet or combining modest diet changes and medication. Recommended Diet First of all, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn recommends cutting out oils and animal products from your diet. He says oils amount to 120 calories per tablespoon and it’s just fat with no mineral and no fiber. Plus, he says fat destroys the endothelium. “I recommend my patients eat green leafy vegetables six times a day. The amount of vegetables is approximately the size of their fist,” recommends Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. “Then add balsamic vinegar because it has acetic acid. It restores cells responsible for making nitric oxide.” Among the vegetables that Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn recommends are: Bok Choy Swiss Chard Kale Collard Greens Beet Greens Mustard Greens Turnip Green Napa Cabbage Brussels Sprouts Broccoli Cauliflower Cilantro Parsley Spinach Arugula Asparagus He also cautions against taking sugar like Stevia. Apparently, Stevia affects receptors in the brain. “Eating fruits is okay but not fruit juice. In real fruit, you get fiber. When you separate the juice, the fiber separates from the sugar,” said. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. “I also recommend flax and chia seeds be included in your diet.” Prevent & Reverse Cookbook Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s staple diet includes oatmeal, raisins, bananas, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. His lunch and dinner would be anything from soups to beans and rice, grains, and vegetables. For those who would want to try his recommended recipes, I suggest getting his Prevent & Reverse cookbook which is available on his website. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn proudly reveals that his diet program is beneficial to everyone regardless of age. In fact, his oldest patient is 95 years old! “The most severe, strict and extreme diet on the planet today is the one that 97% of Americans are eating every day. That diet is going to guarantee that before they perish, they would have some hideous chronic illness,” said Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Additional Resources My father died from heart disease, so this subject is close to my heart. For those who want to know more about heart disease, do check out a couple of my past episodes. I guested Dr. Jack Wolfson on episode 101. In the episodes, he talks about how he saw many patients suffering from heart disease and introduced them to natural medicine. Also check out episode 167 with Dr. William Davis who says that having the right diet supports a normal, stable and a healthy blood sugar level. In 1995 he published his benchmark long-term nutritional research arresting and reversing coronary artery disease in severely ill patients. That same study was updated at 12 years and reviewed beyond twenty years in his book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, making it one of the longest longitudinal studies of its type. In July of 2014, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn reported the experience of 198 participants seriously ill with the cardiovascular disease. During 3.7 years of follow up of the 89% adherent to the program, 99.4% avoided further major cardiac events. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have followed a plant-based diet since 1984. He presently directs the cardiovascular prevention and reversal program at The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. The Esselstyns have four children and ten grandchildren. The story of how I met Dennis Chambers started with a music performance I will never forget. However, that’s not why I’m here. Today, we learn how Dennis Chambers became the legendary drummer he is today. From his earliest memories of copying records on a toy drum kit, to slinging tracks with the likes of John Scofield and Miles Davis, Dennis has a story to tell about everything. Like the music he plays, Dennis shares stories with a rhythm and flow that is music to my ears. You definitely do not want to miss out! Though Dennis is a self-taught musician, he claims he learned from the best. He was so good, that his drumming appeared on a gospel record when he was just 7. At 13 or 14, James Brown was asking him to play in his band. The names just keep coming! Dennis has jammed with the likes of P Funk, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clark, and Carlos Santana. Across the decades, across jazz, funk, soul, and rock and roll, Dennis has become a master chameleon of rhythm and style. I had the opportunity to hear Dennis perform at Blues Alley with Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker - and to watch him play is unbelievable While seeming completely calm and in control of his craft, Dennis can light up a stadium, like he did, beginning as a teenager, during his Parliament Funkadelic days.. When you get a guy like Dennis talking, expect your mind to melt a little bit. His experiences and memories could fill a book, but for now, we’ll settle with a podcast episode. Listen to hear all of these stories of music and soul unfold. Episode Highlights: Dennis shares how he remains so very calm in the middle of mind-bending performances. With a Motown singer mom, music was in Dennis’ DNA. Hear some of Dennis’ favorite bass players to work with - he has worked with some of the greats! What’s new on the horizon for Dennis. Connect with Dennis Dennis' Website Here are some of my favorite performances by Dennis: Dennis plays on David Letterman: Dennis gets FUNKY at Drum Camp: With Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker: Dennis' Drum Solo - This is AMAZING!: Dennis is Sponsored by the following companies: Pearl | Zildjian | LP percussion | Ddrum electronics | Evans Drumheads

Order MAD’s Greatest Artists: Sergio Aragones: Five Decades of His Finest Works by clicking the book cover above! (2010) My first issue of MAD magazine was purchased near the checkout counter at a Stop & Shop supermarket in my hometown of North Brunswick, New Jersey, in July 1970. I’ll never forget the cover: a parody of the summer’s big hit, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, featuring a couple of actors named Redford & Newman. I no longer have it, but I suspect that that was my first exposure to legendary artist Sergio Aragones. SERGIO ARAGONES audio excerpt: "I did about 20 Pocket Books for MAD with new material. The characters are what sell the book. I thought, 'Why not draw myself on every cover? That way they know it's my book.' So I became a comic book character." Sergio has been producing illustrated gags for MAD since 1963 and for many fans, his work and the humor mag’s name are forever entwined. He has been one of the Usual Gang of Idiots for longer than I’ve been able to spell “ee-diots.” This month, Sergio — who has already won the National Cartoonist Society’s top honor, the Reuben Award, as well as the Will Eisner Hall of Fame Award and the Comic Art Professional Society’s Sergio Award, named after, um… him — is being recognized in a different way with a book retrospective. MAD’s Greatest Artists: Sergio Aragones: Five Decades of His Finest Works, is an oversized coffee table collectible that reproduces some of his finest, crazy material in a hardcover format that will no doubt outlast us all. In this amazing episode Adam talks to Dr. Howard Moskowitz, C.S.O. of Mind Genomics and personal hero of Malcom Gladwell. About Mind Genomics Mind Genomics is an empirical, scientific way to identify how people subconsciously respond to aspects of everyday experience. More simply put, Mind Genomics works to sequence a consumer’s brain, layer by layer. This creates a “template” that predicts how someone will feel about new products, services, and messages. This map can then be used as a baseline to predict how other individuals will react. No other science offers this kind of insight. You can see why Mind Genomics is a hot topic in the food industry. It produces a dramatic "lift" in customer response by going beyond customer preferences and lifestyles. Instead it provides direct insight into what consumers are thinking - even when they don't know how to articulate their preferences. About Dr. Howard Moskowitz ..........someone who I think has done as much to make Americans happy as perhaps anyone over the last 20 years, a man who is a great personal hero of mine: someone by the name of Howard Moskowitz, who is most famous for reinventing spaghetti sauce" -Malcom Gladwell, Choice, Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce, Ted Talk, September 2006. Dr. Howard Moskowitz isa well-known experimental psychologistand an inventor of world-class market research technology. He graduated from Harvard University in 1969 with a Ph.D. in experimental psychology. He has written/edited twenty-six books, published over 400 articles and serves on the editorial board of major journals. He has many speaking engagements and does guest lectures at leading business schools and food science schools. His latest book with co-author Alex Gofman, Selling Blue Elephants (Wharton School Publishing) demonstrates and popularises how IdeaMap (i-Novation`s flagship product) creates new products and messages from areas as diverse as credit cards, jewellery offers, presidential messaging, stock market communications, and transnational innovation. Awards and Accolades Dr. Moskowitz has won numerous awards, among them the Scientific Director`s Gold Medal for outstanding research at the U.S. Army Natick Laboratories, and the 2001 and 2003 awards by ESOMAR (European Society Of Market Research) for his innovation in web-enabled, self-authored conjoint measurement, and for weak signals research in new trends analysis and concept development. In 2004, Dr. Moskowitz was elected as an IFT Fellow, and was awarded the "David R. Peryam Award", from ASTM, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of basic and applied sensory science. In 2005, Dr. Moskowitz was awarded the Charles Coolidge Parlin Marketing Research Award for his substantial contributions and dedication to the advancement of marketing research practices. Most recently, he is the recipient of the ARF Research Innovation Award and The Market Research Council Hall of Fame Award, both in 2006. Everyone finds success and shares what they did. But does it work for everyone. Martin shares the importance of your Metabolic Type, your individuality which can mean that how you respond to certain foods is different from how others do. We also discuss some of the writings and positions of Dr. Esselstyn, whi targeted heart disease. Dr. Esselstyn’s experiment started at home. He and his wife adopted a plant-based diet, cutting out oil, meat, fish, fowl and dairy. “It means a lot to patients to know their doctor is making the same changes they are,” he says. Since studies show a craving for fat diminishes the less fat one eats, and since patients have hundreds of recipes from which to choose, the physician and his heart patients have grown comfortable with their routine over time. http://www.dresselstyn.com/ In 1991, Dr. Esselstyn served as President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, That same year he organized the first National Conference on the Elimination of Coronary Artery Disease, which was held in Tucson, Arizona. In 1997, he chaired a follow-up conference, the Summit on Cholesterol and Coronary Disease, which brought together more than 500 physicians and health-care workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. In April, 2005, Dr. Esselstyn became the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Association in 2009. In September 2010, he received the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame Award. Dr. Esselstyn received the 2013 Deerfield Academy Alumni Association Heritage Award In Recognition of Outstanding Achievement & Service, and the 2013 Yale University GEORGE H.W. BUSH ’48 LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP AWARD. http://www.dresselstyn.com/Esselstyn_Three-case-reports_Exp-Clin-Cardiol-July-2014.pdf The epidemic of cardiovascular disease is nonexistent in cultures which thrive predominantly on whole foods, plantbased nutrition. Is it logical to assume that patients with this disease would be willing to transition to plant-based nutrition and might this transition halt or reverse the disease? The authors have experience beyond 25 years demonstrating the success of plant-based nutrition in arresting and reversing cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, the medical community is still skeptical of patients’ adherence and efficacy of this method. We, therefore, report three case histories of carotid, coronary, and peripheral vascular disease. Each case demonstrates disease progression and the failure of the standard cardiovascular approaches in contrast to the prompt, powerful and enduring resolution of disease with whole foods, plant-based nutrition. These outcomes constitute an additional mandate that patients with cardiovascular disease be offered a plant-based option which is safe, inexpensive, empowering, and has the potential to end cardiovascular disease epidemic.
