In this episode of the Well-Led Schools Podcast, we welcomed returning guest Corey Tavella, principal of Thomas More College in South Australia— a large co-ed school with almost 1,100 students that has grown over 30% since his time as principal. Corey recently completed his Master's degree, focusing on measuring effective school leadership using an autoethnographic method. In this method, he acted as both a researcher and used himself as evidence. As such, he's had much time to reflect on his leadership approach from the time he first became deputy principal to now, with six years as principal under his belt. This episode's conversation centers on effective leadership approaches, with an emphasis on building and maintaining trust to cultivate a psychologically safe work environment. In this episode, we cover: The significance of knowing yourself, your values, and what you stand for and how that can guide everyday choices and decisions The differences between an authoritative and authoritarian leadership approach Corey's honest reflections on who he was as a leader when he first started and how his approach has evolved since then Why Corey values presence as a leader and how he integrates it as a guiding principle in his school The difficult challenge of establishing but also maintaining a high-performing executive team and school culture despite the turnover of leaders and staff What an environment of trust looks, sounds and feels like in a school Common barriers to establishing and maintaining trust in schools The importance of speaking up to the right people when you are unhappy with something at work Ways to sustain trust as a collective How principals can support new leaders and middle leaders to develop their knowledge and skills in effective leadership and trust-building About Corey: Corey Tavella is currently the Principal of Thomas More College in South Australia, a relatively large 7-12 school of almost 1100 students from 7-12 (co-ed). This is his sixth year as Principal, having been a Deputy Principal at two schools, one all-boys and one all-girls. Corey has recently completed his masters degree with his main research focussing on measuring effective school leadership using an autoethnographic method where he acted as both researcher and evidence, given his focus on was measuring the effectiveness of his first five years of Principalship. One of his key tenets of leadership is presence, which, he believes, lends itself well to staff well-being. By aiming to be present for his staff, he wants to ensure they all know they are heard, valued, cared for, and respected. Corey has been in education for 24 years, and these last six years are the first in which he has not taught students. Links and Resources: Thank you so much for listening. Centuries are not merely defined by the number of years but by the impact of events. When Dr. Fauci recently declared the US is out of the coronavirus pandemic phase, a new century began. The game change went from kindly reminding students about the importance of masks to not really caring if anyone is wearing one. However, the ramifications of all these changes demand more leadership from principals and educators in general. Here are the 5 principles the pioneers of this new century should implement: You are not your job! Better happy than successful! Is not personal! Embrace mindfulness! Enhance your productivity, elevate your life!

Meet our Guest Celia Carey Celia Carey has dedicated her life to education. With 14 years of teaching experience in secondary schools throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, she particularly has a passion for working with students that come from tough backgrounds. Celia first recognized her desire to work with children when working at a summer camp in Red Bank, New Jersey. Years later, Celia has climbed the ladder by working as a daycare worker, babysitter, substitute teacher, teacher's assistant, teacher, mentor, department chair, and leader in a range of schools- from the most affluent to alternative settings. Celia earned her Bachelor's degree in the area of Psychology from the illustrious Hampton University in Virginia. She later completed her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the beautiful Dallas Baptist University in Texas. She has taught all levels of students, and is certified in Special Education, English as a Second Language, Social Studies, Language Arts, and the Principalship. She currently serves as the English/Language Arts Instructional Lead Teacher at a middle school in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, TX. Alicia Castrogiovanni- Alicia is a certified group fitness instructor through the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). She has an extensive technical dance background with over 25+ years of experience ranging from various forms of traditional dance (ballet, tap, jazz) and international dance. She began her fitness journey with Zumba and has been an active instructor for 10 years. She holds several licenses under the Zumba brand in addition to other dance formats, such as BollyX. Recently, she has found freedom in movement through the Nia Technique. Originally drawn to this format in 2009, she was intrigued by the healing, therapeutic, and holistic approach to movement and the combination of 9 different modalities in one class. The Nia Technique is founded on 3 disciplines: Dance (Modern, Jazz, Duncan), Martial Arts (Aikido, Taekwondo, Tai Chi), and the Healing Arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais Method, Alexander Technique). The combination of free dance, fitness elements, and light choreography innate to the body's natural way of moving created a new way of exploring expression and emotion through dance that she wishes to share with others. Her specialty focus in “Moving to Heal” provides an opportunity to teach movement from the perspective of healing not just for the body, but mind and spirit. Alicia Jackson My name is Alicia Jackson. Clayton Reedie is the current Director for the Campbelltown Principal’s Network in Sydney, the equivalent of a District Superintendent in the United States. He began as a teacher in 1991 and from there earned early promotion to Executive Teacher, Assistant Principal and then Deputy Principal. Clayton’s first Principalship was at Mount Hunter, a small country school of 58 students. Further principal positions followed at Chipping Norton, Hinchinbrook and finally at Dalmeny Public School. In 2019, Clayton left the school-based role to become a Principal (School Leadership) a position which centred on providing support and professional development to principals and school leadership teams. Earlier this year he was successful in being promoted into his current role of Director. Clayton was honoured to be elected by his peers to lead the Liverpool Primary Principals’ Association as President for three years from 2011 to 2014 and in 2016 he was awarded a full scholarship to study at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Clayton lives in south-western Sydney and his greatest love is spending time with his wife, Nikki, and five boys aged 6, 13, 16, 19 and 22. They entertain, enlighten, love and give… but most of all keep him very much grounded in reality. Dalmeny, a K-6 school with over 1,000 students and 80 staff, is Clayton’s fourth Principalship. The first being Mount Hunter Public School, a small country school of 56 students near Camden outside of Sydney. Clayton began teaching in 1991 and has built his leadership experience across a range of settings and executive positions. In addition to these school-based roles, Clayton has been the President of the Liverpool Primary Principals’ Council for three years and has spent time on secondment with the New South Wales Department of Education in a number of Principal support roles. The most recent being with the High Performance Directorate assisting principals to implement a range of reforms around budgeting, localised decision-making processes and school planning. Clayton believes in focused, differentiated professional learning for his staff to improve lesson delivery and maximise success for students. Dalmeny’s professional development structures are a model for many colleagues. When not at work, Clayton enjoys traveling, Rugby League Football (go the Tigers!), V8 Supercars (go Ford!) and watching cricket. He is married to Nikki (also a school Principal) and has five children (all boys!) who keep him very grounded – and very busy! Presented and produced by Seán Delaney On this week's programme my guest is Dr. Rob Evans who was a keynote speaker at the 2015 annual conference of the Irish Primary Principals' Network.
Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Alice Peck, one of the best principals I have ever worked with. You’ll love to get to know her in this episode. How she came to be where she is at. What she noticed coming from Texas to Utah. What she really enjoys about how things have changed since she came to her current position. How she got her staff on board right from the beginning with PBIS. The art program at Oakdale. The process of starting PBIS at her school. Practical advice of how to get things going. How important it is to have the whole staff involved in school-wide initiatives (speaking of PBIS specifically). Why an actual form for Office Discipline Referral form is important. Where to go when processes are established and ready to maintain. Sponsor: Sanebox Web Site Transformative Principal on Stitcher Refer A Principal
