A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

From 1993 to 1996, the gaming industry underwent a metamorphosis, driven by technological advancements and shifts in player demographics. As the maturing audience craved more intricate narratives, developers answered the call, transitioning from cartoonish titles to thought-provoking themes. The period witnessed the rise of CD-based games, igniting fiercer competition among industry giants like Nintendo, SEGA, and Sony. The advent of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) marked a significant self-regulatory step, while the first E3 solidified its role as an annual gaming spectacle. The epochal shift from 2D to 3D, propelled by powerful Graphics Processors, redefined gaming immersion and mechanics. Amidst these transformative years, the PlayStation emerged as a dominant force, reshaping market dynamics and setting new standards for console gaming. In 1993, the industry leaned towards mature content, with congressional hearings aiming to balance creative freedom and responsibility, growing anticipation around Nintendo's "Project Reality," and a behind-the-scenes look with David Sheff's "Game Over." 1994 marked an era of maturation and innovation, highlighted by the establishment of the ESRB, the unveiling of the Nintendo Ultra 64, and the onset of digital journalism through Game Zero magazine. 1995 saw heightened competition and community engagement, propelled by the rise of CD-based gaming via Sony's PlayStation, the inaugural E3, and the undying rivalry between SEGA and Nintendo. By 1996, the dawn of the 3D era was unmistakable, with Graphics Processors transforming game design, the PlayStation emerging dominant amidst the decline of several home consoles, and the industry bidding adieu to 2D, embracing the immersive realms of 3D gaming.Featured Games:Doom, Myst, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, Dune 2, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, Donkey Kong Country, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Virtua Fighter, Ridge Racer, Chrono Trigger, Command & Conquer, Super Mario World 2, Earthworm Jim 2, Rayman, Descent, Phantasmagoria, Tekken, Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Quake, Return Fire, Resident Evil, The Neverhood, Minesweeper, and Crash Bandicoot. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 4 (00:06) - 1993 (14:27) - 1994 (32:08) - 1995 (52:41) - 1996 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Writer-actors always make for insightful interviews, but that’s particularly true for Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who write, produce, edit, and star as middle school–aged versions of themselves on Hulu’s Emmy-nominated cringe comedy “Pen15.” Together they shed light on their “creative ESP” as collaborators, their distinct page-to-screen process alongside director Sam Zvibleman, and how to overcome the self-doubt inherent in a Hollywood career—especially for women onscreen. “I have permission to be free and wild and sort of unapologetic,” says Maya of playing a 13-year-old. Anna agrees: “I’m so grateful that we got the opportunity to just be characters with zero sex appeal. Zero!” After meeting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Maya and Anna set out to create their own opportunities in the biz, starting with the web series “Project Reality.” Maya also stars in ""Plus One,"" “Betas,” “Casual,” “Wine Country,” and the upcoming “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” while Anna has appeared in “Rosewood,” “Baskets,” and “Together Together.” Read more about the Gotham Award–winning “Pen15,” which will continue its second season this fall, here: https://bit.ly/3wVEqR0 And in this week’s Backstage casting insider segment, Christine McKenna-Tirella addresses a frequently asked question: How does one pursue a career in casting? --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Is it still acceptable or cool to make the “NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOOOOUR” reference? The original video went up on Mar 26, 2006. It’s almost old enough to drive. It’s an old meme that’s old enough to make dank memes now. Long story short, on this episode we talk about some old Nintendo junk!   On the 64th episode of No Refunds, Dwight and Alex (henceforth known as The Dinosaur) are joined by Brian and Alex (henceforth known as not The Dinosaur) to talk about everyone’s favorite retro console, the Nintendo 64! This brilliant cabal will discuss all their favorite games from Mario 64 to Mario Kart 64. What a range!   Also, Tiffany stops by to yell at us.   Check out Alex (not The Dinosaur) and his podcast Crash Test Live (really his side project’s side project) HERE! He also is known to make mouth noises and play the six strings in a BAND! I really think the No Refunds endorsement is going to push those boys over the edge. I’m just saying, prior to Dwight being on CTL and inviting Alex (not The Dinosaur) onto No Refunds… No number 1 hit… After? At least 7 weeks at number 1! Coincidence? It's been 15 years since the Nintendo 64 was released. Before that we knew it as the Nintendo Ultra 64. Before that, Project Reality. How does Nintendo's last catridge-based system stack up? Vinnk and Sean take a look back across the turn of the millennium, and how the Nintendo 64 fulfilled some of its promises, but also how it lead both of them to discover the broader world of gaming: both domestically and overseas. In a clever scheme to tie the episode number into the content of the show, this week we spend some time talking about the Nintendo 64. From Project Reality to the limitations of the cartridge format to the system as a turning point for Nintendo's position in the industry, we talk about it all. Also, the first installment of a new segment where we pick a retro game and break it apart. We start with Star Tropics, and if you're a fan...you might not like what you hear.We also discuss the games we played this week, which includes Tron, NFL Tour and Omega Five. Thanks for listening!
