Yes that's right, I'm declaring an end to the console wars, and its end comes with Forza heading to PS5. They end not with a bang, but a whimper. Also Multiversus fails to capture any market share from Super Smash Bros, and is shutting down after a year. Both Fantastic Four and Jurassic World Rebirth drop some serious trailers. And EA faces and interesting future. While Disney+ loses almost a million subs, and Buffy is returning to a screen near you.
We are joined by our old pal Ryan and brand new guest Jeremy to discuss Duke Nukem 64 and San Francisco Rush! At Space World 2001, Shigeru Miyamoto presented a showcase for Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble 2, a cutting-edge Kirby title that demonstrated the power of the upcoming GameCube and its connectivity with the Game Boy Advance. Crowds flocked to the play the game at the convention, press covered it widely alongside other key GameCube fixtures like Luigi's Mansion or Super Smash Bros. Melee, and then it...never got released. What happened to the mysterious Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble 2? That's the main subject for our episode today, as Sean and Bridget dig into the history of this canceled game and reflect on the GameCube Kirby that might have been. Then for Act 2, we've brought some questions for each other, with a Q&A segment on the games that brought us emotional experiences, our favorite "bad" games, and more. For Act 3, found only on Patreon, we're looking back at the other announcements from Space World 2001 through the lens of Nintendo Power issue 149, among other sources. It was a time of peak GameCube anticipation, Wind Waker controversies, and...Donkey Kong Racing? Watch for our Act 3 segments to regularly post a few days after the initial episode. Nintendo has announced a live event to take place in Seattle in September, but the big mystery is what might they be wanting to show people. Is this the Western arrival of SpaceWorld? Or is there something else Nintendo hopes to accomplish with this event? Would this be something gamers would be interested in attending, possibly travling across the country for, or will it be more like the mall tours prior to pandemic lockdowns? We discuss all this and much more in gaming news this week on another episode of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! When Wind Waker was originally announced during Space World 2001, fans revolted. With one trailer, Nintendo reversed course on the "adult gamer" trend and planted their flag as the maverick company unafraid to buck tradition. Twenty years later, it's a beloved game.On this episode of A Gamer Looks at 40, we explore the memories and recollections of the people who loved this game then just as much as they do now and see if we can discover how Wind Waker rose from the waves to become a true classic.Starring (all handles from Twitter unless otherwise noted)Allen PetrozziAndrew CraigDan of @retrologicgamesJodi aka @BakuielJustin of Killer Quail Studio (@KQSKillerQuail)Lord Reverend D (@knightfall247) of Rulebooks Anonymous PodcastRyan aka @gameswithcoffeeSeth Sturgill (@twodollarhero) from @allnpodcastSong CoversThe Legend of Zelda - Wind Waker Medley | Fingerstyle Guitar Cover by Casper Esmann - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA7NY1Nv_JgMy Discord: https://discord.com/invite/SdaE4atGjCMy Twitter: @agamerlooksat40My Facebook: facebook.com/agamerlooksat40My Insta: @agamerlooksat40My Patreon: patreon.com/agamerlooksat40My Email: agamerlooksat40@gmail.comMy Phone Number: Ehhhhh, not gonna happen. :-DSupport the show

This week on "Hot Takes", we had a tête-à-tête with Philadelphia's eminent collective and label, Virtua94! Comprised of numerous artists and DJ's in the Philly area, we brought on the two biggest names in the group, Mr. Hideyoshi and Toadofsky, to talk shop, share some insight, and regale us with stories. Having been involved in the vaporwave and vapor-adjacent scene in Philly for years as both artists and DJ's, Victor and Andrew have been releasing albums like Enraile's "Spaceworld 2000", throwing dance parties like Super Party Ball, and have also been integral to the visual art direction of many of Virtua94's releases. Not only was Virtua94 doing live shows earlier than many of the other vapor shows that have popped up in the US, but they've also been assisting with arguably the biggest vapor dance party, Terminally Chill, since its inception. During this twenty-fifth episode, we shouted out our favorite visual artists in and outside of the scene. We discussed our favorite video games of all time, touching on such games as Final Fantasy, Katamari Damacy, Pokémon, and Super Smash Bros. Getting to hear the stories behind Toadofsky and Mr. Hideyoshi's monikers, production styles, and performance styles was of particular note! Tune in for this wholesome episode with our good friends from Virtua94! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Show NotesThis is part two - of four - of a conversation with author and video game historian Steven L Kent, and is a collaboration between ourselves and Zoom Platform. Whilst this is an audio episode, it was originally recorded as a pair of video interviews. What we've done is cut the two video interviews into four parts and will be releasing them as audio episodes. But if you'd rather watch the first two parts as a video you'll find it here.Part Two of FourAs a reminder, Steven describes his books asMy books are called "The Ultimate History of Video Games".Volume 1 starts out with Abraham Lincoln and Bagatelle, and goes all the way to 2000 and sort of the collapse of the Dreamcast - or it's about to collapse, you can tell that it's faltering - PlayStation 2 has been announced and is just coming out, and Xbox has been announced.Book two has some overlap, because there will be some people who read volume 2 without reading volume 1, so it's got a bunch of overlap. But what's interesting is that I thought I'd be able to go from 2000 to the present, but I only got to 2012. So volume three should come out around 2026.- Steven L Kent299No discussion on video game history would be complete without a discussion on "the price heard" around the world. Which you can find here. And for those who don't know, there is a very long story behind the crowd reaction here. Essentially, the story is that Sega had just announced their Saturn (only a few hours earlier), which was a surprise to most of the retailers who were in attendance (because Sega hadn't told them that it was being announced). Sega also announced it with a $399 price tag.As such, Sony's entire announcement of the PlayStation was simply299- Steve Race, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment---The following is a promo-spot for The Shrimp and Crits Podcast. He started Nintendo's "responsible engineering" philosophy - the idea that they will use technology that is widely available now in order to innovate in non-traditional ways. And this is something that Nintendo has continued to do to this day. He was the designer of the Game&Watch, GameBoy, the "cross pad" controller, and the Metroid series.Steven shared a wonderful story about Gunpei in this episode:So I was at a CES - I was fairly new in the industry - and Virtual Boy had not come out yet. I was covering [Virtual Boy] for Electronic Games.I went to Nintendo and I said, "I wanna meet all these people," in truth I clipped their names out of "Game Over" by David Sheff. I didn't know this people. Nobody did, really. If it weren't for Sheff, we might still not know them... [Nintendo] gave me some Miyamoto time. But Gunpei Yokoi gave me an hour, two days in a row. And after that, if we were ever at a show and we would see each other, we'd go have a drink together. We couldn't talk very much, because my Japanese is non-existant, and I'm not sure where his English was, but it wasn't strong. But there was a bond, there was a real friendship.I remember the last time I got to see him was at the unveiling of the N64 at Space World... and everyone ran to this one corner and looked at the N64, and near the exit as you left, there was a little ring of Virtual Boys and Gunpei was there with his translator. And as I was leaving to write my article about the N64, there's Gunpei and he's like, "Can you come take a look at things?" And he was my friend, so I went and looked at things, and it wasn't wonderful. And nobody else was there, so we sat and talked, and his translator translated for me.And that was the last time that I got to see him. And he was a wonderful gentleman: he was nice, he was smart, and he had a self-deprecating sense of humour. I think he already knew that he was leaving Nintendo at that point.- Steven L KentFull Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things. What have you been playing recently? THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME.
Some day, it will be nice to not have the biggest stories of the week or month dominated by the awful industry practices in gaming, but it is not this day. We get into the PlayStation gender discrimination lawsuit, and we talk about CDPR's claims that people will one day see Cyberpunk 2077 as "a very good game." Some cool game preservation news this week as well, with fans recreating the Spaceworld 1997 demo of Ocarina of Time. We also get into Halo Infinite continuing to dominate our time, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon (which just announced its release date for Dec. 13), and Lost Judgment. https://techraptor.net/gaming/news/playstation-gender-discrimination-lawsuit-filed-by-former-employee https://techraptor.net/gaming/news/cyberpunk-2077-will-be-seen-as-very-good-game-cdpr-says https://techraptor.net/gaming/news/fans-recreate-spaceworld-1997-demo-of-ocarina-of-time https://techraptor.net/gaming/features/development-timeline-ocarina-of-time-1 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:09 - PlayStation Gender Discrimination Lawsuit 00:11:03 - Cyberpunk 2077 Will Eventually Be "A Very Good Game" 00:24:25 - Ocarina of Time Source Code Recreated 00:31:05 - Kirby Deep Lore 00:34:28 - Halo Infinite 00:45:01 - Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon 00:51:52 - Lost Judgment For more gaming news, reviews, and articles, head to techraptor.net. Imagine if certain things had turned out differently in the history of Zelda, if just a couple changes had been made in the "real world timeline", how different the Zelda series might look today? It's kind of a mindbend, thinking about how history might look completely different, so this week, the gang goes full bore into the thought experiments to speculate and hypothesize what would have happened if certain things had been different over the years. What if Skyward Sword's E3 demo worked? Would Zelda fans like it more? What if Breath of the Wild had come out for Wii U as intended? Would it have saved that console or doomed the Switch? What if The Wind Waker had used the Spaceworld graphical style? What if the 80's cartoon had more heavily influenced the series going forward? All these questions discussed and so much more! In this bonus episode Adam is joined by Brian Miller from the Play Your Way podcast to discuss our play through of the 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' set in Hyrule: Zelda Minish Cap. We chat all things Zelda and off topic such as: the Spaceworld 2000 and 2001 Wind Waker controversy, relying on walkthroughs, people who insult the things you love, gamer entitlement, Nintendo Directs, and the Mass Effect 3 ending (of all things). So put on your cap, shrink down to our level, and let's talk.

Wherein the narrator addresses his interest in the fact that if he were president then he too would have an airplane with a desk inside, and also he quotes "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and Sergio Leone's forgotten masterpiece "DUCK YOU SUCKER," and then riffs for a bit about wanting to watch the news all the time. Also he is high throughout and this botches his effort at sticking to the script.
