Foundations of Amateur Radio
A brief introduction to the HamSCI community

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio Since becoming a licensed amateur in 2010, I have spent a good amount of time putting together my thoughts on a weekly basis about the hobby and the community surrounding amateur radio. As you might know, my interest is eclectic, some might say random, but by enlarge, I go where the unicorns appear. Over a year ago I mentioned in passing a community called HamSCI. The label on the box is "Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation", which gives you a sense of what this is all about. It was started by amateur radio scientists who study upper atmospheric and space physics. More formally, the HamSCI mission is the "Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art." If you visit the hamsci.org website, and you should, you'll discover dozens of universities and around 1,300 people, many of whom are licensed radio amateurs, who are asking questions and discovering answers that matter to more than just our amateur community. For the eighth time the HamSCI community held an annual "workshop", really, an opportunity to get together and share ideas, in person and across the internet, a conference by any other name. Under the banner theme of "HamSCI's Big Year", over two days, 56 people representing 27 different organisations across 61 sessions, tutorials, discussions, tours, posters and demonstrations, explored topics all over our hobby, from the Personal Space Weather Network, capable of making ground based measurements of the space environment, to the Whistler Catcher Pi, a project to record the VLF spectrum to 48 kHz using a Raspberry Pi. You'll find research into HF antennas for the DASI or Distributed Array of Small Instruments project and associated NSF grants, exploring measurements of HF and VLF, combined with GPS and magnetometer across 20 to 30 stations. There's discussions on how to explore Geospace Data, such as information coming from the Personal Space Weather Station network, or PSWS, using the OpenSpace project and dealing with the challenges of visualising across a wide scale, all the way up to the entire known universe. Did I mention that there's work underway to add PSWS compatible receivers to Antarctica? There reports on observations and modelling of the ionospheric effects of the April 2024 solar eclipse QSO party, including Doppler radio, HF time differences, and Medium Wave signal enhancements, not to mention planning and promoting future meteor scatter QSO parties. There's, post-sunset sporadic-F propagation, large scale travelling ionospheric disturbances, GPS disciplined beacons, the physical nature of sporadic-E propagation and plenty more. As you might have heard me say at one time or another, the difference between fiddling and science is writing it down. It means that you'll find every session has accompanying documentation, charts, graphics and scientific papers. Remember, there's eight years of reading to catch up with, or learn from, or play with. The publications and presentations section on the hamsci.org website currently has 526 different entries. You might not be interested in the impact of radio wave and GPS scintillation, or rapid fluctuation in strength, caused during the G5 geomagnetic storm that occurred on the 10th of May 2024, or a statistical study of ion temperature anistropy using AMISR, or Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar data .. or you might. In case you're curious, "anistropy" is the property of being directionally dependent, in other words, it matters in which direction you measure, which might have some relevance to you if you consider that we think of the ionosphere and radio paths being reciprocal. If it reminds you of isotropy, that's because they're opposites. The point being, that amateur radio is a great many things to different people. If you're a scientist, budding, graduate or tenured, there's a home for you within this amazing hobby. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: The association that represents registered nurses in Ontario is blasting a move by the province to invite internationally trained nurses to do the work of personal support workers while not giving them credit for the practical work experience required by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The memo ---- sent out by the Ministries of Long-term care and Health on Jan. 17 to long-term care licensees — says the move is in response to staff shortages due to COVID-19-related absences or isolation requirements. It states that select internationally trained nurses (IENs) who are applicants to the college will be eligible to work in long-term care facilities — but as personal support workers (PSWs) or unregulated care providers.  In its program guide, the ministry also states that the work won't count towards IENs' college requirements to show evidence of practice. GUEST: Morgan Hoffarth, President of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario - Ontario has launched a new Crown agency for skilled trades services. Skilled Trades Ontario replaces the Ontario College of Trades and will be used to promote the trades and develop training standards. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Unvaccinated family members will be prevented from entering long-term care homes in Ontario as the province enhances the COVID-19 protocols to prevent the Omicron variant from triggering another wave of outbreaks in an already fragile sector. The Ministry of Long-Term Care is blanketing the sector with new rules this week that would impact visitors and staff alike, regardless of their vaccine status, limiting who can enter a nursing home ahead of the holidays. The temporary measures will go into effect on Dec. 17. GUEST: Dr. Vivian Stamatopoulos, Co-Founder of Canadians4LTC Standards and a Professor at Ontario Tech University - Ottawa's bottom line is benefitting from billions in new tax revenue since the April budget, with the Liberal government opting to divert about half of that substantial gain toward new spending, the fall fiscal update shows. Funding related to COVID-19 makes up a large part of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's latest fiscal plan, which outlines nearly $30-billion for recent and future pandemic measures, including $4.5-billion for responding in the event that new measures are required to fight the Omicron variant. The new variant is fueling fears of another round of lockdowns, and inflation is running near two-decade highs. This appears to have persuaded the government to delay acting on measures that were promised in the recent Liberal Party election platform. GUEST: Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation - The federal government is readying new travel rules that could be announced as early as today (Wednesday December 15), after Justin Trudeau met with the premiers to chart a response to the escalation in COVID-19 cases, increasingly driven by the Omicron variant. The Prime Minister held a call with his provincial and territorial counterparts to brief them on options Ottawa is weighing to make travel more difficult. Hamilton was at 80.6 per cent as of Monday, which is one of Ontario's lowest rates. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Premier Doug Ford's government will announce its new plan for lifting more of Ontario's COVID-19 public health restrictions next week. The easing of pandemic measures could include ending capacity limits in all locations where proof-of-vaccination requirements are in place, such as restaurants, bars and gyms, a senior official in Ford's government said Wednesday. GUEST: Sabrina Nanji, Founder of the Queen's Park Observer -  The Ontario government's plan to invest $260 million and hire 4,000 staff within a year in the long-term care sector is, simply put, misguided. The reason given for this financial injection is to meet the goal of providing long-term care residents with an average of four hours direct care per day.  Long-Term Care Minister Rod Phillips, in his Oct. 6 announcement, also stated, “This investment will allow all homes to hire and retain the staff they need.” This is simply not true. What this announcement and funding scheme reflect is yet another ineffective attempt to solve the crisis of the worker shortage without addressing the bigger issue – retaining the folks in these positions. You can read to full Op-ed article HERE. GUEST: Laura Bulmer, Chair of the Canadian Association of Continuing Care Providers - A Hamilton city councillor is pushing back against a new poll that claims the “silent majority” of Hamiltonians want to expand the urban boundary. In a tweet, Ward 8's John-Paul Danko referred to a new Nanos Research poll — funded by the Realtors' Associatpusion of Hamilton-Burlington (RAHB), the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), and the West End Home Builders' Association (WEHBA) — as “a clear example of how the development industry is able to buy public policy.” The Nanos poll of 700 randomly selected residents, surveyed by phone between Aug. 24 and Sept. 18, found that 38 per cent of respondents want the city of Hamilton to expand the urban boundary into farmland. GUEST: Michael Collins-Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the West End Home Builders' Association - Hamilton councillors have strong words for Alectra Utilities, after learning that it will stop providing water billing services to the city when its contract expires in 2024. “I'm very disappointed, and I feel blindsided by Alectra,” says Ward 6 Coun. This episode sees the return of Katherine Finlay at the Village of Riverside Glen. Katherine came on the radio last year to talk about the Java Music Club - today she returns to share her experiences being diagnosed with (and recovering from) Covid while living at Riverside Glen. This has included struggles - being quarantined, worrying about her diagnosis and the deterioration of her physical health, and the reality of being separated from her husband in Long Term Care for long stretches of time. But it is important to Katherine to share the positives she's experienced too - the incredible resilience, patience, and care her and the residents have received from their PSWs, and the time the isolation has given her to work on her incredible history project: a project documenting people she feels have meaningfully impacted the world. This conversation gives a glimpse into the layers and complexities of emotions some of our seniors are facing, it gives a space for Katherine to grieve, but also to acknowledge and celebrate share and we are so thankful to Katherine for opening up about this difficult topic. For this episode I return to The Village of Riverside Glen, this time exploring the learning opportunities for Personal Support Work. Supporting our seniors at retirement and Long-Term Care residences through this global pandemic has been an undeniably stressful and intense situation, but one potential positive aspect to that is that it has drawn attention to the roles of PSWs, and the ongoing need for people to pursue this line of work. Today I interview Sarah Pottier, Chair of the PSW and Supportive Care Program with Conestoga College, and Hubrecht Quist, Director of Nursing at the Village of Riverside Glen. We talk about the Personal Support Worker Education program at Conestoga, and more specifically the "Living Classroom" - an immersive learning experience where students learn to be PSWs working directly with residents at Riverside Glen. You can find out more about the Living Classroom at https://livingclassroom.ca/ and more about the Personal Support Worker program at https://www.conestogac.on.ca/fulltime/personal-support-workerThis interview was originally recorded on July 1st, 2020 Get on the email list at bridgingthesocialdistance.substack.com
