10 years ago, Palestinian Professor Refaat Alareer (z''l) appeared on the original version of Beyond The Pale with his student, Yousef Aljamal, while on US tour with their book, Gaza Writes Back. Shoshana Brown and Rafael Shimunov replay segments of that episode from the the Beyond The Pale archives, housed at The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU. Rafael describes his relationship with Refaat, why it was so hard to edit these clips. Shoshana speaks on collective liberation, and healing after Refaat's and his family's murder by Israeli forces. And Yousef, now a scholar himself, opens archives with a tribute to Refaat. We hear the voices of past show hosts, including Alex Kane, Esther Kaplan and Marilyn Kleinberg Neimark--and its original intro. We open the show with Brian Cox's reading of Refaat's final poem, "If I Must Die" and cover his impact around the world and across the campus protests by students across the United States and world. And we closed the show with a reading from the book itself, Gaza Writes Back: Short Stories from Young Writers in Gaza, Palestine. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beyondthepale/message

Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on September 13, 2021. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison was once a front-page headline in the “war on terror.” Today, public knowledge of the torture that made it infamous is starting to fade – but one US lawsuit for its victims is still going on. It centers on private contractors: companies that became an integral part of the US military efforts post-9/11 attacks, which changed the way war is fought – and accountability is sought. In this episode: Rafael Shimunov (@rafaelshimunov), human rights activist Katherine Gallagher (@katherga1), senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights Majid, Abu Ghraib plaintiffs' legal team member in Iraq Episode credits: This episode was updated by Negin Owliaei. The original production team was Alexandra Locke, Negin Owliaei, Priyanka Tilve, Amy Walters, Dina Kesbeh, Ney Alvarez, Ruby Zaman, Tom Fenton, Stacey Samuel, and Malika Bilal. Meet Susanne Zirkiev, the Bukharian plant queen realness and social media connoisseur you didn't know you were missing in your life! It was so exciting to have the opportunity to speak and hang out with Susanne earlier this year when we recorded this episode. How often do you meet a Bukharian Plant Stylist and Influencer?? Her positive energy, aura, and passion for her craft was enticing to be around and left me buzzing with a smile long after we stopped recording. We spoke about her presence on social media, specifically TikTok where she has 95.7k followers and Instagram that has 24.8k followers. She walks us through the back end of content creating and the way that she was able to kickstart her career in plant styling, the pressures of being consistent with content, and the importance of staying true to yourself as you navigate through today's society and the double edged sword of social media. I was able to connect with her through the Progressive Bukharians Facebook group, that Rafael Shimunov from the previous episode actually created, so if anything is a testament to the amazing connections that can be forged through this type of community building it's this episode. Through our discussion of the intricacies of social media platforms, we talked about the unique experience of growing up in the Bukharian community, the way that framed her view of herself, and how she was able to take charge of her life through manifestation. To learn more about Susanne and stay up to date on her content, follow her @susannezirkiev on both TikTok and Instagram!
Welcome to Season 2, Chai Podcast family!! I am so excited so pumped to finally be sharing the first episode of this season! I had the pleasure of starting Season 2 by speaking with Rafael Shimunov, who is a digital and creative strategist, he's worked with a countless amount of grass roots organizations over the past 15 years of his career, and is a social justice warrior. He's honestly a twitter icon, boasting a casual 54k followers and uses his social media presence to spread awareness about powerful and important social movements, in addition to satirical and pop-culture related content. We talked a bit about his family's migration to the United States, the difficulty with fitting in when he was in grade school, and the creation of the Progressive Bukharian Facebook group that actually allowed me to connect with him, and to many other Bukharians with similar sentiments. We also discussed the importance of grass roots organizations, groups, and how projects like Progressive Bukharians and Chai Podcast are creating a safe space for resources and conversations to flourish organically, while also serving as a communal space for so many unique and exciting people. To stay up to date with Rafael's latest social justice ventures and interests, follow him on Twitter @rafaelshimunov. "We're ALL ambassadors." - RafaelShimunov. Artist and organizer Rafael Shimunov's family ofBukharian Jewishrefugees from Uzbekistan learned English by watching Star Trek. Raf's read on Worf as a fellow Jew of color is eye opening. We talk all things Worf, but especially about his depiction as a Jewish person of color, directly within Star Trek's coding of his background and metaphorically as an individual who finds meaning in his multiple identities. We answer listener questions on everything from Worf and Orthodox religious identity to his success with the ladies and his post Deep Space Nine future. And how Klingon has more in common with Jewish languages than you might think. Hot off "Commendatori" last week, in which the gang traveled to Italy, the show introduced Furio, and we were treated to arguably the best Paulie Walnuts episode of the show, this week brings us an incredible Christopher episode. In "Big Girls Don't Cry," originally aired February 13, 2000, Chris Moltisante has been signed up (by his girlfriend, Adriana) for a class called "acting for writers," in which the teacher immediately informs the class that "the actor is an instrument for conveying ideas." As funny as Paulie in Italy was, Christopher in acting class might be even funnier, whether it's crushing at improv, expanding his range with James Dean, or getting offended by the mere sight of one of his classmates' dumb faces (could you blame him? Mitch from Hartsdale is the worst). Is David Chase better at making fun of therapy or at making fun of the arts? Meanwhile, Furio has come to America, Big Pussy has been passed over, and Richie Aprile has moved into Tony's mom's house with his sister, Janice. Once again, this is one of my favorite episodes and it ends with an all-time great tracking shot scene of Furio unleashing strangely humorous ultra-violence. To help us discuss it all, we have this week's guest, Rafael Shimunov, from JFREJ (Jews for Racial and Economic Justice) and The Jewish Vote. I hope he loves our dumb theme song! Activist Rafael Shimunov joins DOOMED with Matt Binder to discuss Ellen Degeneres's friendship with George W. Bush. We discuss George Bush's legacy, our own experiences growing up post-9/11 under the Bush administration, why Ellen's friendship with Bush is a problem, why Ellen's defense of her friendship with Bush is even worse, Rafael's amazing video critiquing Ellen's defense and how the Ellen Show keeps hitting it with unwarranted copyright claims to take the video down even though the video falls under fair use, and more! Also on the patron only half of the show, we discuss Shep Smith's sudden departure from Fox News, a post-Trump world, your questions and comments and more! Rafael Shimunov is "just someone from Queens" who was born in Uzbekistan, and incorporates creative tactics into grassroots campaigns. Rafael is a board member of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, and formerly with the Working Families Party and the Center for Constitutional Rights. In December 2018, Rafael guerilla-style installed his own painting on a wall in the Whitney Museum of American Art. The piece depicted a family running from teargas that was fired at the U.S./Mexico border. The action was in protest of The Whitney's Board of Trustees Vice Chairman and owner of Safariland, Warren Kanders. Art magazine Hyperalergic reported that canisters of teargas bearing Safariland’s name were found where U.S. Customs and Border Protection had fired teargas at Central American migrants near Tijuana in November 2018. The migrants, who included children, were seeking asylum in the U.S. If you generally pay attention to lefty news, you may already have seen some of Rafael's other work. He livestreamed the JFK Muslim ban protests for the Working Families Party, which received 16 million views on Facebook alone. He also made the video that used a red overlay to compare videos, the original and the doctored Inforwars version that was shared by the White House, of the altercation over a microphone between Jim Acosta and a White House intern when Trump cut off Acosta's question in November 2018. We spoke with Rafael at the Anchor Podcast Lab in Manhattan, about how to and why to sneak a piece of protest art into a museum, the ownership of cultural institutions, cars honking in support of demonstrations, coming to America from Uzbekistan, growing up in an immigrant family in Queens, and how using art in protest taps into different parts of people’s brains. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/protest-and-survive/support

Since the election of Donald Trump as President many have been wondering what they can do to make their voice heard, get involved to fight what may be coming, and fight against the hate that's been unleashed. Many in entertainment and fandom have been voicing their displeasure with the election and are working to add not just their voices but also their talent to the mix. Joining this politically focused episode of Graphic Policy Radio is Andrew Slack, co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance, and Rafael Shimunov, the Creative Director at Working Families Party. Both will talk about some of their plans and give ideas on how you can get involved. Andrew Slack is the creator and co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance, Odds In Our Favor, Superman Is An Immigrant, The Rebel Alliance, and now the Hamilton Alliance as he builds a network called imagine Better. He's the Civic Imagination Fellow at Civic Hall. His work is focused on using the power of stories to unleash the civic imagination through a methodology he calls “cultural acupuncture.” Follow him on Twitter @andrewslack. Rafael Shimunov is the Creative Director at Working Families Party, a growing progressive party that works inside and outside of the Democratic Party by challenging corporate Democrats with progressive Democrats. Follow him on Twitter @rafaelshimunov. We want to hear from you. Tweet us your thoughts @graphicpolicy.
