L'Europe a adopté deux textes distincts sur la réparabilité des batteries, et il ne faut pas les confondre. Le premier, le règlement européen 2023/1670, concerne les smartphones et les tablettes. Le second, le règlement 2023/1542, s'appliquera à partir du 18 février 2027 à la plupart des autres appareils portables fonctionnant sur batterie : casques audio, liseuses, consoles portables ou encore ordinateurs portables.Le principe général du texte de 2027 est clair : l'utilisateur doit pouvoir retirer et remplacer lui-même la batterie avec des outils courants. Un simple tournevis doit suffire. Si un outil particulier est indispensable, le fabricant devra le fournir gratuitement avec l'appareil. Les batteries de remplacement devront aussi rester disponibles pendant au moins cinq ans après la mise sur le marché. Certains fabricants ont déjà anticipé cette évolution. Sennheiser a lancé son casque Momentum 5 avec une batterie remplaçable à l'aide d'un tournevis Phillips. Fender avait suivi une logique similaire avec ses écouteurs Mix. Preuve que la contrainte technique n'est pas forcément insurmontable.Mais plusieurs zones grises subsistent. Le cas des montres connectées, bracelets de fitness ou lunettes intelligentes reste discuté. Leurs batteries sont souvent très petites, donc plus délicates à manipuler. La coalition Right to Repair Europe conteste toutefois cet argument, en citant notamment la Pixel Watch 4, déjà dotée d'une batterie amovible. Pour les smartphones, le cadre est différent. Les fabricants doivent bien proposer certaines pièces détachées pendant sept ans, batterie comprise. Mais une exception existe. Si le téléphone conserve 83 % de sa capacité après 500 cycles de charge, 80 % après 1 000 cycles, et s'il est certifié IP67, le remplacement peut rester réservé aux professionnels. Ces trois critères doivent être réunis.En pratique, beaucoup de smartphones actuels remplissent déjà ces conditions. Realme et Oppo revendiquent même 80 % de capacité après 1 600 cycles. Apple, de son côté, a introduit un adhésif à libération électrique sur ses derniers iPhone, facilitant le retrait de la batterie sans confirmer de lien avec la réglementation européenne. Fairphone défend depuis longtemps une autre approche : prouver que durabilité et réparabilité peuvent aller ensemble.
