What stories do you tell yourself about your body? That's what fellow recovery warrior and mental health advocate Nia Patterson asks in their new body image workbook What's The Story?.Nia is a social activist, artist, content creator, podcaster, and business and body image coach. You may know Nia as @thefriendineverwanted online, where they share messages about eating disorder recovery, body liberation, fat activism, body acceptance, and more. In November 2023, Nia released their first book titled What's the Story?: A Guided Walkthrough of the Stories You Tell Yourself About Your Body. In this episode, they join host Andrea Wells to discuss this book and share their experience of pursuing eating disorder recovery as a queer black person in a larger body.Take a listen to hear how you can rewrite your own body story, and how advocating for body liberation can be an important part of the recovery process (no matter what size your body is).Key Takeaways from the episode:Body Neutrality: Nia Patterson introduces the concept of body acceptance spectrum, emphasizing that aiming for body tolerance is a valid step in recovery, rather than solely aiming for body love or acceptance. This nuanced approach allows individuals to acknowledge where they are in their recovery journey and sets realistic goals for progress.Early Focus on Body Liberation: Nia stresses the importance of addressing body liberation as an early step in the recovery process, challenging the traditional approach that prioritizes it as a later concern. This shift in mindset can revolutionize how we support individuals in their recovery journeys.Combatting Internalized Fatphobia: The episode delves into the impact of internalized fat phobia and societal beauty standards on individuals' mental health. Nia provides valuable insights on reframing negative thoughts and the ongoing process of distancing from unattainable beauty ideals.BEYOND BODY: EARLY ACCESSrecoverywarriors.com/bodyCONNECT WITH NIA PATTERSONNia on InstagramNia's Official WebsiteNia's Spectrum of Body AcceptanceNia's book What's The Story: A Guided Walkthrough of the Stories You Tell Yourself About Your BodyCONNECT WITH RECOVERY WARRIORSCheck out articles on the Website Follow on InstagramLike us on FacebookLearn more about the Podcast

Can you relate to this? Feeling like it's “not fair” that you have to work so hard to eat healthy, when other people don't seem to think twice. Being envious of other people who seem to eat whatever they want and lose weight. Thinking “what's the point of doing all of this?” It may sound shocking, but eating junk food is not “more fun”. If it truly was more fun, then why do we want to make changes? The reason is because there are real negative consequences to not fueling our bodies properly. Those hyper-palatable, highly processed food-like products do not feel good in our bodies. Food engineers have created these foods to generate quick dopamine, but it does not feel good after that fleeting moment. Diet culture is overdue for a new mindset shift. Realizing she could end up spending thousands of dollars without changing the behaviors that put her there in the first place, she joined the Recover Strong program, which has brought her binge eating into remission. Sancia's story is one of true resilience, reminding us that every human being has walked through things that we have no idea about. A vulnerable insight into her road to remission, Sancia's story will inspire those who need to hear that there is hope on the other side of mental illness. And that I didn't have to keep reproducing the same patterns of behaviors, thoughts, or relationships." - Clélia FroguelToday we have an inspirational story of recovery from a warrior I have personally worked with, Clelia Froguel. She is a shining example of what happens when you ditch diets and stop letting the elusive chase of weight loss be your primary marker of success.Clelia and I go way back to the very beginning of this podcast, when it use to be called the Recovery Warrior Show, I've updated the name to the Recovery Warrior Shows because our vision is to expand to bring you collection of unique shows that target different stages and interests in the recovery space. But back to the beginning of the podcast. I just released the Rise Up app and was a few years into working on Recovery Warriors. On the podcast I announced that I was opening up some one-on-one coaching spots, and she was the first person to sign up. We worked together for well over a year and I had the privilege of watching her transform. She showed me that what I was teaching actually works to help other people in their recovery, change is possible. And since then I've gone on to create online programs like Map My Recovery that have given nearly 1,000 warriors the training, accountability, and structure they need to make real change happen. But it all started with Clelia, and I am so honored to have her here to share her story and her experience working with me as she recovered from bulimia and binge eating. She truly has become the hero of her own story. CONNECT WITH RECOVERY WARRIORS Check out articles on Website  Follow on Instagram Like us on Facebook Learn more about the Podcast

Have you struggled with not following through on what you say you'll do? If so, no judgment! You're not alone. But over time, this lack of integrity degrades confidence and erodes happiness. I frame integrity in action as two things: 1) Doing what you say you'll do 2) Living a life aligned with your core values How often do we set ourselves up to fail because we over-promise and over-commit to unrealistic ideals, only to fall short, feel like a failure, get discouraged and give up. Over time, this lack of integrity of not following through with what we say we'll do destroys confidence and life satisfaction. In today's podcast, I outline 5 ways we are inadvertently degrading our own integrity and what to do to rebuild integrity. Integrity to our values is the cure for dissatisfaction and unhappiness. Here are 4 Reflection Questions to get you into action: What is truly important to me? If I could create my ideal life, what would it look like? Are there things I need to stop doing to be more aligned with my values? Are there things I need to start doing to be more aligned with my values? If you know that you're out of alignment and it's creating a vulnerability that you're masking with emotional eating or overeating, I want you to join Best Weight. This is the deeper work that needs to happen if you want to stop overeating. No diet is going to fix your weight issue if you keep using food to feel better. I'd love to help you. What's the difference between confidence and self-confidence? I answer this question on today's podcast, along with steps to build your self-confidence. Self-confidence will help you step out of your comfort zone, grow, take risks that move you forward, and be willing to fail on your way to success. Building self-confidence starts with self-awareness, that is knowing who you are and what is important to you at your core. The other steps are: Mastering your mindset Overcoming challenges with self-compassion Surrounding yourself with like-valued people Here are my personal beliefs that have foster self-confidence, feel free to borrow them! I can figure anything out. I won't always know exactly how, but I can figure it out along the way Every setback is an opportunity for growth God's grace is sufficient in every circumstance Self-confidence is not the absence of self-doubt. It is the willingness to keep moving forward in the presence of self-doubt, knowing that no matter the outcome, you'll still have your own back. Amanda struggled with weight and body image for as long as she could remember. When her body changed during pregnancy and postpartum, her bingeing got out of control. Like many women with BED, shame surrounded her and perpetuated her body dissatisfaction. She knew her eating disorder was robbing her of the joy she wanted to experience as a mother to a now 2-year-old boy. Although she was busy working on her PhD, caring for a toddler during the day, and juggling family responsibilities, Amanda decided it was finally time to get help for Binge Eating Disorder. She committed herself to Recover Strong, our CBT-based BED recovery program, and made time for herself to heal. Amanda has completely healed her relationship with food and her body. She is experiencing freedom that she didn't think was possible. She is wearing bathing suits at the beach, allowing herself to be in photographs with her son, and bouncing at the trampoline park – without the mental weight of judging her own body. She has found a sense of peace and self-compassion, and bingeing has stopped completely. On this week's podcast, Amanda shares all of this and more to offer hope to other women listening who may have Binge Eating Disorder. Know there is help. And know there is hope. She just wanted to lose weight. She knew she struggled with bingeing every evening, but she thought it was just her fault. That she had a willpower issue or character flaw. When we diagnosed her with Binge Eating Disorder, everything finally made sense and she was able to get the real help she needed. Instead of searching for diet after diet, which only resulted in more restriction and more bingeing, she was able to find freedom around food (even her "fear food" - chips!), learn to accept her body instead of hate it, and feel confident that she knows how to prevent and if necessary, recover, from binges.I so appreciate Dearbhla having the courage to share with us because Binge Eating Disorder is highly stigmatized and under-recognized as a real medical diagnosis. If you listen and this podcast resonates with you, or if you have a diagnosis of Binge Eating Disorder but haven't been able to get the help you need, then Recover Strong is for you. The timing of how this episode lined up to get published is perfect! Today we have Jessica Flint with us! Jessica and I recorded this conversation several weeks ago after she interviewed me for her community Recovery Warriors. We had such a great time together that I knew y'all would enjoy meeting her too. but THEN when Jessica found out I was coming through Austin on my book concert tour, without any hesitation she opened her home to my dog and I! So last week, our internet friendship become real. I cease to be amazed by how welcoming and warm practical strangers are, especially while I'm on tour. So if you're thinking about doing some brave travel, I highly recommend leaning into the embrace of strangers. It's an excellent exercise in trust and how to find home in yourself and amongst strangers. Before we get on to today's interview, I just want to update you... The 200 free website audits I'm giving away this summer are going FAST, so if you or someone you know is interested in getting some professional, outside eyes on your bit of internet bravery, then head on over to emilyannpeterson.com and scroll down the homepage to learn more and sign up for your spot in the calendar. (http://emilyannpeterson.com/free-website-audits) I've been absolutely LOVING getting to know everyone, but this won't be a forever offer, so I want to make sure you act on it now before the summer is up or before the spots run out! But free website audits and staying with hospitable internet friends is not what we're talking about today with Jessica, although I guess it does relate somewhat. Because this month's theme in The School of Bravery and here on the podcast is "Defiant Expectation!" It takes a certain defiant expectation to drive around the country and stay in the homes of internet friends, yes. But it also takes an extreme amount of defiant expectation to go through recovery, of any kind, but today we're talking specifically about recovery from an eating disorder. Now 2 weeks ago, I was able to lead a couple workshops for an eating disorder treatment facility, which was simply magical for me. As someone who survived an eating disorder myself, I have an intimate knowledge of the bravery required to set foot in a therapeutic environment to make those baby steps towards a different kind of life. Jessica Flint is with me on this. She's the founder of the Recovery Warriors community which dedicated to educating, inspiring, and empowering people to make big changes in their life. Forbes recognized her work as a technology innovating mental health that has served millions worldwide. If you're on my email list, you'll already know this, but Jessica invited me onto her Recover Strong interview series, which starts tomorrow on June 20th, if you're listening to this episode when it goes live. If you resonate with both of our stories of recovery, then you'll want to get hooked up with that interview because she and I discuss some of the darkest days I experienced during my own recovery story. A link to that is in the show notes for this episode. Glenn Phipps has set out on an incredible mission to help the chronically ill, and everyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors, reach their health and fitness goals.  He currently runs the Movement Lab, and is helping people reach new levels of health and wellness. Glenn Phipps is a former MMA Fighter who was forced to end his fighting career early after being diagnosed with a severe disease.  He struggled during recovery, but was able to develop a mindset of constant small improvement to stay motivated. He found power by staying focused on the present moment, instead of craving to exercise and perform as he was able to in the past.   Glenn never lost his love for training, and he was able to turn that passion into a successful career helping others get fit and make strong recoveries!
