As my family heads into our second year on our homestead, the idea of having a milk cow has fallen in and out of favor as we plan and dream of the future. There's no doubt the allure of having fresh milk, butter, sour cream and (most importantly) homemade cheese on our homestead, but so far, we have made no plans to add any dairy animals to our land. We love the idea, as I'm sure many of you do, but are cautious to move forward with such a large commitment and have concerns over what it would take to work that system into our current lifestyle. Well, today's guest is, in my opinion, one of the very best resources for those who are interested in diving into the world of homestead level dairy production. Her name is Robyn Jackson, and through her online business “Cheese from Scratch” she teaches, inspires and connects cheesemakers and milkmaids from all over the world. TOPICS OF DISCUSSION: * The differences between beef and dairy breeds and her plans to cross a Jersey and beef breed in the future for hybrid vigor * Starting to make cheese from purchased milk as a great fundamental homestead practice * The difference between pasteurized and ultra-pasteurized milk in regards to cheesemaking * The fermentation process of cheesemaking using lactic bacteria * There's a cheese for everybody and the basic gear and ingredients needed to get started * Taking steps to close loops of supply by developing a ‘clabber culture' * The value of feta, brie, mozzarella and ricotta as beginner cheese recipes * The stigma around owning a dairy animal and the reality of planning life around a milking schedule * You don't have to make a large variety of cheeses but should find what fits your lifestyle and location to determine your ‘homestead cheese' * How to manage a schedule for the year and fit the extra work of cheesemaking into your life * How children can become a fun component of the dairy lifestyle ROBYN'S CHEESEMAKING 101 COURSE: https://cheesefromscratch.com/course/homestead-cheesemaking-101-course/ THE MILKMAID SOCIETY: https://cheesefromscratch.com/milk-maid-society/ ROBYN'S INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/cheese_from_scratch_/ THE CHEESE FROM SCRATCH WEBSITE: https://cheesefromscratch.com/ SUPPORT THE SHOW: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/plansnprov

Show Notes, Episode 67: Blooming Where You Are Planted with Robyn JackonAbout this show: “As an assistant principal, you must learn to bloom where you are planted. If you do, you will open up huge opportunities to make a meaningful difference right now in your career and build the skills you need to make an even greater difference once you become a principal.”These aren't my wise words. They were first spoken by Dr. Robyn Jackson, addressing a common concern of assistant principals: How do you grow your own leadership in the shadow, or at least presence, of another leader?Notable QuotesRobyn Jackson“But when you're a builder, nobody has to move because you can build wherever you are. And so I think that's kind of one of the main differences between leadership and builderdership that creates space for other people.” 2:40“Because then you build the muscles of of of truly being the person who is the builder in the building, that you know the builder in chief in your school building. And those skills transfer over to the principal ship when most of the other skills we learned as an AP don't transfer” 10:45“He said something that just stopped me in my tracks and I couldn't stop thinking about, which is he said bosses say go and leaders say let's go. And I've heard that before. That's, you know, that's a great distinction. But then he said builders. Say come and and in that one simple sentence, I'd started to to to see the answer to some of the problems that I've been frustrated about in education” 14:20“And how do you get your people committed to that compelling purpose? And therefore things you're going to do, feedback, support, accountability and culture. That's the only four things you can do to positively influence your teacher's behaviors.” 16:27“Then your conversations, whether they're formal or informal, become more about teacher growth and serving students than they do about fulfilling the requirements of the evaluation cycle. And so you don't have to straddle 2 worlds anymore. You turn the thing that you have to do into the thing that you want to do anyway, so that you're always every conversation helping teachers grow” 24:27“ You have to sell things to the district, the idea about why we're going to do something or not doing, or you have to sell the idea to parents or to your community. We need to get good at selling our ideas, and the assistant principal is the assistant principal. Ship is a great way to practice that, you know, how do you see something that needs work in the school, and how do you, how do you present that idea to a principal in a way that the principal sees not only the merit and the idea, but is willing to take the risk of implementing your idea” 30:50“If you can take yourself out of the hero spot, let them be the hero, and you put yourself in the guide position. You will always, always be able to get your story across in the way, or get your advice or your ideas across in a way that people can welcome them.” 35:54“You owe it to yourself. You owe it to us. You owe it to the students and the families you serve. To instead of trying to be some cookie cutter version of of what somebody else's idea of an administrator is. To be yourself, but not just yourself, your best self, that's that's the, that's the ultimate role” 39:30“Focus on being your best self, because if you can do that, you can really step into that the role will be the right role will be waiting for you” 41:00“it's not just grow where you're planted, bloom where your planet. It does two things. First of all, it makes your work so much more fulfilling and rewarding right now. Secondly, it does change people's lives for the better. But thirdly, this is almost counterintuitive. By blooming where you're planted, you get more recognition than if you try to conform into what the district wants you to be anyway, because there's only one of you.” 42:54Frederick“One of the best principles I know. Doesn't respond email You know, there are a few, but if you want to get in touch with him, emails not the way, because he doesn't do email, because he's out in classrooms working with teachers. So it's interesting that people, I think. If you're doing it right and executing on that vision and making a case for that, there's, I think we get more latitude than than what we think we can get.” 29:47“We make a lot of assumptions about the systems we're in and what the systems want from us. And I think in your story what you show us is a lot of times our assumptions aren't correct” 47:43Links:School Leadership Reimagined: https://schoolleadershipreimagined.comBuildership University: https://buildershipuniversity.com/My email: frederick@frederickbuskey.com The Assistant Principal Podcast website: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/appodcast.html Sign up for the daily leadership email: https://mailchi.mp/c15c68e6df32/specialedition Website: www.frederickbuskey.comBlog: www.frederickbuskey.com/blog (reposts of the daily email)

There's great power in the way that Robyn describes teacher development, growing them one level in one year. Picking one thing to develop and targeting that area. We need to know the most critical areas of instruction to set as our focus for teacher growth. Robyn talked about this mantra: Bosses say “you go.” Leaders say “let's go.” Builders say “come.” The leader dictates the vision but that staff should put boundaries around their own behavior by setting the core values. This is the purpose stage that Robyn teaches. Don't miss what Robyn says about every teacher becoming a master teacher. Listen to what it means to interrogate your teacher evaluation system. The hosts begin this episode by reflecting on their recent interview with Jethro Jones (1:11). In particular, they respond to Jethro's stories about creative ways he and his staff developed a strong school culture. They also discuss some of the strategies Jethro shares in his book, SchoolX: How principals can design a transformative school experience for students, teachers, parents – and themselves. Next, Tom explains how Jethro's design thinking approach to leadership reminded him of the “builder's” mindset shared by Robyn Jackson in a previous episode (8:14). He furthers the thought by discussing the concept of “broccoli fractals” that provides another illustration of leadership. In a school, you can't control every interaction, but you can define the ethos of the school; and if you do that, the stakeholders in the school will understand and the positive elements will “reproduce.” Then Tom and Emma then check in on the state of exams in the UK (15:01). There are fast-moving changes to what students and educators can expect, making it even more important for students to understand what they're aiming for. For the final topic of the discussion, the hosts discuss the “In Action” book series (27:18). Tom discusses some of the contributing authors and how this highly practical series of titles came together. What happens when you’re asked to follow bad pedagogy or teach topics that seem irrelevant for kids? You can do exactly as you’re told...or you can quietly subvert the system, and find ways to do what’s best for kids. Listen in as Dr. Robyn Jackson and I talk about ways that we’ve done this in our teaching practice, and how we’ve supported other teachers in doing the same. We speak the quiet part out loud in this episode: the best teachers don’t just follow directives without question — they’re NOT doing everything they’re told, because a lot of what they’re told to do isn’t good for kids. You don’t have to settle for just “getting through” boring curriculum and test prep. You can be actively looking for ways to get yourself excited about what/how you need to teach and make the learning meaningful for kids so they’re more engaged, too. “You can break motivation barriers for disengaged students by recognizing that motivation is an investment decision. Students have time, attention, and effort, and they are making a decision every single day about whether they want to invest those things in our classrooms or in something else. Making your classroom worth investing in is about creating a space where students’ time, energy, and effort will be rewarded.” --Dr. Robyn Jackson Join us as Robyn and I do a deep dive into her quote above. We’re tackling whether there is such thing as a kid who doesn’t want to learn, and then working through the 4 causes of student disengagement (instructional, institutional, interpersonal, and internal.) Robyn explains in-depth how teachers can identify and address each cause in practical, relatable ways. We camp out for quite a while on the topic of interpersonal barriers, because there’s a powerful approach there which can be used to re-engage a reluctant learner. Robyn explains how to uncover students' primary will driver: purpose, mastery, autonomy, and belonging/connection. We discuss what each one means, and how you can incorporate these needs into your daily lessons in a way that reaches all your kids. Feeding kids’ dominant will drivers is surprisingly simple once you understand the basic principle: in fact, just changing the wording you use when giving directions to kids can address the variety of will drivers in your classroom and increase the likelihood of engagement, and Robyn shares specific examples. Motivation is a complex issue, and Robyn provides lots of concrete tools to solve the root problems permanently. This is not about quick tips and hacks: I promise if you can invest an hour of your time into learning the principles from this episode, it will forever change your teaching — Robyn’s work is just that powerful. Don’t muddle through the rest of the year trying to use band-aid solutions with disengaged kids: it’s not too late for a breakthrough, and these simple, powerful principles can make a huge difference quickly. “We have to stop forcing teachers into these cookie cutter molds of what we think a master teacher should be. You should be able to be a master teacher and stay authentic to who you are. I see a lot of teachers that are afraid to be afraid of who they are because they are worried that they don't fit the cookie cutter idea of a master teacher and when a principal comes into the classroom, instead of being authentic they jump to try and conform to whatever the evaluation instrument says. And there's a way to do both.” Robyn Jackson started Mindsteps, Inc, a company that helps schools transform their school culture from the top down with the ultimate goal of helping teachers realize how they can all help every student succeed. She's authored 10 (soon to be 11!) books about this idea and her perspective has helped many schools produce master teachers. 3:00 - Administrators are the builders that create the schools where teachers and students thrive 6:30 - God doesn't always give you the whole plan until you take the first step 9:00 - The seven principles presented in Never Work Harder Than Your Students and Other Principals of Great Teaching 20:00 - Transformation means you're building with the teachers and the resources that you already have 23:10 - You can be a master teacher and still be yourself

Have you or has someone you know been in a job that you or they are really good at, but it just doesn’t feel like you or they are making the biggest possible impact? Most people will answer yes to this question. The difference between a career of passion and impact and a career of being good at something comes down to taking the time to discover what that passion or zone of genius really is.  Today’s guest took the time to discover what she really wanted to do and what she felt passionate about. Dr. Robin Jackson felt called to teach and started out as a high school teacher, she then became a middle school administrator, and then put in her resignation instead of accepting a promotion as principal. Even though, it would be a great promotion, she knew she was called to do something else.  Dr. Robin Jackson is the founder of Mindsteps Inc. an educational consulting firm that helps educators turn their schools into success stories using the resources they already have. She is also the author of 10 books including the best-selling Never Work Harder Than Your Students and Other Principles of Great Teaching and Never Underestimate Your Teachers: Instructional Leadership for Excellence in Every Classroom.  She has been sending out a newsletter since 2006, but she wanted to have more intimacy with her audience. She started her School Leadership Reimagined Podcast in 2018, and discovered she not only had that intimacy and better connection with her audience, but the podcast helped her explain complex topics better and helped better prepare clients for her Builder’s Lab workshop. Robyn is so smart. Her podcast not only offers methods and tips to create better school leaders but better leaders overall. I found this conversation insightful, motivating, and inspiring, and I think you will too. Show Notes: [03:42] Robyn started out as a high school English teacher. She then became a middle school administrator. [04:08] She began to feel that she was called to do something else. She was about to be promoted as principal when she realized she wanted to quit her job and write a book. [05:15] She didn't know how everything would work, but she started a newsletter, Mindsteps Inc. and consulting. She had everything set up by the time she quit her job.  [06:07] Robyn had learned a lot working in schools about what to do and what not to do.  [06:20] Her work has crystallized with the idea that you can transform your school with the resources and people that you have. [06:37] She created a model for organizational transformation focused on schools. You can transform your teachers. The underlying principles were based on business principles. [08:51] If a school is struggling, it usually starts at the leadership or principal level. Mindsteps needed to help leadership, so that they could truly transform their schools.  [09:28] They worked their way backwards from the results they wanted to see with the kids. [10:57] In high school, Robyn realized it was her calling to be a teacher. That's what she was meant to be. [11:31] Different teachers come into your life at different times when you need them. [11:53] In college, an English teacher gave Robyn a copy of Toni Morrison's Beloved, and it was the first time Robyn had read a book by an African American Author.  [12:29] She has been blessed to have teachers who show up throughout her academic career and business.  [13:35] Robyn has been doing a newsletter since 2006. She felt intimacy was missing.  [14:38] She began podcasting to provide intimacy and a deeper experience. [15:41] Podcasting also allowed Robyn to fill a void that she saw in the education space. She wanted her podcast to be educational and transformational. [16:10] The podcast has helped Robyn to develop a deeper relationship with her clients. She can connect more with her audience, because they've been having a conversation every week. It also allows people to understand the work that she is doing in a way that enables them to buy in. [17:10] Listening to the podcast creates primed and ready to work clients. [17:33] The podcast also enables Robyn to reach a wider audience and people who may not necessarily read things like newsletters. [18:28] Robyn shares a story of a Builder's Lab member who came from the podcast and had a huge breakthrough because of the podcast.  [20:10] When people listen to your podcast, they become transformed by what you are saying.  [21:13] She started thinking about a podcast in 2017, but she didn't have the team. She decided to commit for a year. She then found the PPS team to help kick things off and help with production. [23:29] Robyn defines success on impact and the difference the show makes in people's lives not download numbers. Her focus is to help schools turn into success stories.  [25:12] She travels a lot, so needs to take breaks or have seasons. It also helps her focus on a small amount of episodes at a time and then take a break and travel. Educators also have seasons.  [26:19] They do a fall season and spring season which corresponds with the educators seasons.  [29:06] Your zone of genius is what serves others and truly serves you. Robyn took time to think about what she wanted to do, and she started doing the morning pages. She discovered her dream and was brave enough to follow it. [32:58] She is safer and happier in her zone of genius.  [33:48] Mindset is a family business, and their big goal is to have a wider impact and not have everything revolve around Robyn.  [36:06] Darrell's takeaways: Get The Big Leap. Listen to your calling and pay attention. Find your zone of genius. Podcast about what brings you joy. Pause and evaluate what you are doing. Journal and think about your zone of genius. Podcasting provides a level of intimacy and professional development that was missing from the written word. It also helps create better prepared clients.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Mindsteps Inc. Builder’s Lab School Leadership Reimagined Podcast Robyn R. Today we're going to talk about the little things students do that are rude, disrespectful, or just annoying. The things that don’t necessarily warrant some kind of consequence, but that you don’t want to let slide every time. How should a teacher respond to eye rolling, teeth sucking, muttering under the breath, and so on? What do we do about bad attitudes? I don’t want to settle for trite rehashed info, so I reached out to Robyn Jackson because I knew she could take this conversation to a deeper level. Robyn was a National Board Certified English teachers in Maryland, just outside of Washington DC, and has since been and administrator, adjunct professor, consultant, and speaker. She’s been championing equity, access, and rigor for over 15 years. Robyn is seriously one of my favorite experts in the education space, because she has a deeper understanding of human behavior and motivation than anyone else I know, and she always keeps it real. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her speak in person a few times just hang on her every word--there’s so much good info there. She has this lovely way of uncovering the root problem and also sort of calling you out on your own mess instead of allowing blame-shifting. Grab a notepad when you listen to this one, because you’re going to want to take notes! Want to give your feedback on Season 5 of the podcast?
