On Wednesday, December 21st, 1988, a timber truck driver making his way through rural Georgia made a horrifying discovery. Just off US Route 82, down at the end of a long dirt road, in a dusty turn out which doubled as an illegal dumping ground, he found the remains of an unidentified toddler wedged inside of an old television console.Investigators would later reveal that the child, described as a young black girl, was estimated to be between the ages of 3 and 4 and had likely been dead for thirty to sixty days. Whoever had dumped her in that spot had first wrapped her in a blanket, placed her inside of a duffel bag, filled that bag with concrete, and then put it inside of a metal foot locker which was also filled with concrete. It was a scene so bizarre, so disturbing, it continues to haunt the investigators who worked it.Despite their sincerest efforts, the case grew cold and the child's true identity remained illusive. Twenty-one years later, in 2009, an anonymous tipster claimed that the child might have been named Bridget, could have been from the city of Albany and might have family living in Tifton. All these years later and both little Christmas Doe's identity and that of her killer remain unknown.Sponsored by: ZocDoc! Visit ZocDoc.com/TRACE to download the ZocDoc app FREE! | Babbel! Are you interested in other episodes of Speak Your Piece? Click here.Podcast Content: This episode is about literary and creative expressions--works of poetry, essays, art and journalism--produced by Diné or Navajo junior high and high school students, and older students ages 18 to 24, who returned to complete their high school years at IIS. For nine months of each year, most of the school's student body boarded chartered buses that took them to and from Brigham City's Intermountain Indian School (IIS: 1950-1983). Living hundreds of miles from their families and communities, these children, some as young as five years of age, lived in dormitories and attended school on a sprawling and somewhat isolated north Utah campus. Our guests for this episode: Farina King (Diné, historian, Univ. of Oklahoma), Mike Taylor (English and Native American Studies, BYU) and James Swensen (photographic/art historian, BYU). Each read their favorite poems and excerpts, shared personal insights and discoveries, and expressed their awe and wonder, at the youthful creative output covering relationships, youthful love, protest, homelands and family, and above all else, their affirmations of Indiginous knowledge and identity. The IIS campus, which was managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, remains partially standing, located just below the incline to Sardine Canyon on US Route 89. Tens of thousands of Navajo students attended what was for its time, the largest Indian boarding school in the USA. During the school's last ten years the school became Inter-tribal facility, inviting both Navajo and students from other tribal nations.      This richly illustrated book describes, interpretes, and amassing hundreds of Diné student works into one volume. This book expands the known canon of mid 20th century Indigious art, literature and journalism. King, Taylor and Swensen's analysis, and their gathering of youthful Diné creative works, are both nationally and regionally significant, for Indigious Studies, American history, and our nation's interest in seeking out, and making publically available, more inclusive works in the Humanities and in the arts. Bios : Dr. Farina King--a citizen of the Navajo Nation--is the Horizon Chair of Native American Ecology & Culture, and an Associate Professor of Native American Studies at the Univ. of Oklahoma. King specializes in twentieth-century Native American Studies.  Besides this book she is the author of The Earth Memory Compass: Diné Landscapes and Education in the Twentieth Century.  Dr. Michael P. Taylor is Assistant Professor of English and Associate Director of American Indian Studies at BYU. He is a coauthor of Returning Home (the book in discussion). His research engages Indigenous archives to expand Indigenous literary histories and support community-centered initiatives of Indigenous resurgence. Dr. James R. Swensen is an associate professor of art history and the history of photography at BYU. He is the author of Picturing Migrants: The Grapes of Wrath and New Deal Documentary Photography (Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 2015), In a Rugged Land: Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and the Three Mormon Towns Collaboration, 1953-1954  (Univ. of Utah Press, 2018) and co-author of Returning Home  (the book in discussion).

The Loyalsock Creek begins in Wyoming County and ends at Montoursville, PA, where it flows into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The Loyalsock Trail (LT) is a footpath which begins on PA Route 87, 9.0 miles north of the Route 87-Montoursville Exit of Interstate 180 (US Route 220), and ends at a parking lot on Meade Road, 0.2 miles from US Route 220. The entrance to Meade Road is 2.4 miles north of the intersection of Routes 220 and 154 near Laporte. The LT follows mountain ridges and streams through the Loyalsock Creek watershed as it travels through the woods on footpaths, old logging roads and abandoned railroad grades. And we're talking about a brand today that's been around forever and I'm trying to think of my memories of them. I mean, I grew up in a town that didn't have one for a while. I think about their marketing today and it's gotten weirder and weirder and that's the Colonel, KFC. We're going to find out about Colonel Sanders, right, and KFC. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So pop quiz. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Is the Colonel a Colonel? Dave Young: I know the answer to this because it's a related thing to an honorary that I have, which is an Admiral in the great Navy of the state of Nebraska. So the Colonel I'm guessing that there's an honorific. Stephen Semple: There is because both Fred Astaire and Whoopi Goldberg are also colonels. Dave Young: Colonels. All right. I outrank them I think, as an Admiral. Stephen Semple: Well, it's a pretty important title because it's the highest award you can get in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. KFC was founded by Harland David Sanders and at the time of his death in 1980 KFC had 6,000 outlets and was doing $2 billion in sales. So it had become a pretty big deal in the fast food space. Harland was born on September 9th, 1890. And when he was six his dad died and his mom was forced to go to work. And this left young Harland to take care of the household. This is where he learned to cook. And he left home at the age of 13 and he did a lot of different jobs early in his life. He was an insurance salesman. He was a filling station operator. And when he turned 40, he was offered the chance to take over a Shell gas station located on US Route 25, just outside of North Corbin, right on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains. Stephen Semple: And it was on this busy highway. Now, when he took over the gas station, he decided to convert the gas station store room into a small eatery. So he put up a couple of tables, few simple chairs, and this kept him busy. He was the cook, he was the server, he was the gas attendant, but it worked out well. Well enough that four years later he bought the larger station that was across the road and he expanded the six tables. And this is when he started to sell fried chicken. He had been working on a recipe for fried chicken. Dave Young: And he's in his 40s at this point. Stephen Semple: Oh yeah. Yeah, he's in his mid-40s at this point. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So for the next few years, he experiments with the recipe for fried chicken and he lands on what is now the original recipe with 11 herbs and spices. Right. Dave Young: It's a secret. Stephen Semple: And it is a secret. It's actually a secret they've guarded pretty tightly. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: But he also decided he needed to become better at managing restaurant. And it's interesting how we've done a few podcasts now where people have reached this stage where they realize, you know what, I need to get some more information. I need to get some more knowledge. So he took a course at Cornell University of hotel administration learning a little bit more about managing a restaurant. So now it's a couple years later, it's 1936.

The segment of US Route 99 from Los Angeles north to Bakersfield was traditionally known in State Highway documents as the "Ridge Route." During modern times the name "Ridge Route" has be usurped in popular lexicon in favor to the nickname known as "The Grapevine." This Roadcast will attempt to decipher the origins of "The Grapevine" and how it came into popular use today. Jan 21, 2021: President Biden: Democracy Prevailed

AM Quickie

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: The world is a little bit safer today. Joe Biden is back in the White House after four years of malarkey and madness, and ready with seventeen day one actions. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s flunkies began to face international sanction almost immediately upon the end of his tenure. And his most loyal followers are distraught – how sad. And lastly, supply shortages are causing states to cancel thousands of appointments for people who hoped to get the coronavirus vaccine. Here’s hoping Biden can turn this situation around, and fast. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Trump era is over. Joe Biden yesterday was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts as the forty-sixth president of the United States. In his inaugural speech, surrounded by thousands of National Guard troops who were mostly off-camera, Biden addressed the violence at the Capitol on January 6th. He vowed that white supremacy and domestic terrorism will never prevail. He said QUOTE Today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate but of a cause, the cause of democracy... Democracy has prevailed ENDQUOTE. He also called for unity, calling it the path forward at a historic moment of crisis and challenge. Kamala Harris, the first woman vice president and the first VP of color, was sworn by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She was escorted to the platform by Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Police officer who faced down members of the mob two weeks ago. Lady Gaga belted out the national anthem, Jennifer Lopez sang “This Land Is Your Land,” and young poet Amanda Gorman recited a poem she completed only after the insurrection. Garth Brooks also performed. Biden wasted no time attempting to undo some of the worst actions of Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House. He signed seventeen executive orders, memorandums and proclamations yesterday, according to the New York Times. He ended Trump’s efforts to leave the World Health Organization and enacted a mask mandate on federal property. He signed orders reversing Trump’s immigration crackdowns, and repealed Trump’s so-called Muslim Ban. He signed a letter indicating that the US will rejoin the Paris climate accords, and an executive order overturning several of Trump’s destructive environmental policies. He also extended federal moratoriums on evictions and on federal student loan payments. Not bad for a first day. China Sanctions Trump Cronies Donald Trump took his last trip on Air Force One yesterday morning, landing in Florida, where with any luck he will endure a form of internal exile. Republican state representative Anthony Sabatini has proposed renaming US Route 27 after Trump, according to the Washington Post. But Democratic members of Congress Joaquin Castro of Texas and Linda Sanchez of California plan to introduce legislation banning federal property from ever being named in Trump’s honor. Sanchez went so far as to tell People magazine that QUOTE not even a bench [should] ever bear the name of this traitor ENDQUOTE. Trump surrendered the White House after a late night of signing last-minute pardons and other clemency orders for one hundred and forty-three people, the New York Times reports. Beneficiaries included Steve Bannon, his former chief strategist; Elliott Broidy, one of his top fund-raisers in 2016; and a series of politicians convicted of corruption. The White House did not announce the pardons until after midnight. As Biden was being sworn in yesterday, China imposed sanctions on former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, trade adviser Peter Navarro, and other Trump administration officials, saying they had damaged the US-China relationship with QUOTE crazy moves ENDQUOTE. Tough break, fellas! State capitols around the country were mostly calm but under heavy guard yesterday for fear of more violence by Trump supporters. Biden’s inauguaration also drove Trump’s most rabid supporters, the followers of the Q-Anon conspiracy theory, to despair. Some, however, are still urging their comrades to QUOTE trust the plan ENDQUOTE, and hold out hope for a miraculous Trump revival. Whatever. Finally, HuffPost reports that federal authorities yesterday arrested Joe Biggs, a prominent member of the Proud Boys who promoted the Capitol insurrection. It’s too late for a Trump pardon now. Harsh, bro. US States Suffer Vaccine Shortages The push to inoculate Americans against the coronavirus is hitting a roadblock, the Associated Press reports. A number of states are reporting they are running out of vaccine, and tens of thousands of people who managed to get appointments for a first dose are seeing them canceled. The full explanation was unclear, but last week the Health and Human Services Department suggested that states had unrealistic expectations for how much vaccine was on the way. About half of the thirty-one million doses distributed to the states by the federal government have been administered so far, according to the AP. However, only about two million people have received the two doses needed for maximum protection against Covid-19. Countries across Europe are also having problems getting enough doses. In the US, some states have suggested they may run out of vaccine by today and are unclear when new doses will arrive. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said yesterday that the city had to cancel twenty-three thousand appointments for people awaiting their first dose this week, the AP reports. The reason? Inadequate supply. In Florida, local media reported a similar problem in the Miami area, where the Baptist Health care system canceled appointments that had been scheduled for first doses. San Francisco’s health department said it is likely to run out of vaccine today, in part because the state pulled back on administering a batch of Moderna shots after several health workers suffered what may have been a bad reaction. West Virginia, which has run one of the speediest vaccination drives in the country, in part by using small-town pharmacies, said it didn’t receive an expected increase in doses this week. This is where the feds need to step in and use the government’s vast resources to boost production. Capeesh? AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Kroger yesterday pulled the Indiana Oath Keepers from its community rewards initiative, which funneled an unknown amount of donations from customers to the right-wing extremist group. But according to the Washington Post, the Indiana Oath Keepers are still participants in a similar donation program called Amazon Smile – at least for now... The AP reports that Italian police have recovered a five-hundred-year-old copy of a Leonardo da Vinci painting that was stolen from a Naples church during the pandemic. The man whose apartment police found the painting in claimed he’d bought it at a market. Sounds like a real bargain. Police in the United Kingdom found eight hundred and twenty-six cannabis plants in an indoor farm in London’s financial district, Reuters reports. The plants were in a building near the Bank of England. But we thought banker types preferred cocaine? In the final hours of the Trump presidency, immigration officials detained a nine year-old Haitian boy with a valid US visa, separated him from his elder brother and incarcerated him, the Guardian reports. Vladimir Fardin was sent to a refugee resettlement facility in southern California as an unaccompanied minor, and his older brother Christian Laporte was deported to Mexico. Advocates are worried about the boys and appalled at the cruelty of the Trump policy. May America be done with such inhumanity forever. Ahmaud Arbery's life was at a crossroads on February 23, when he laced up his running shoes for his daily run. Ahmaud probably wasn't thinking about his past that Sunday afternoon. He had plans for the future. His mother said he intended to go back to South Georgia Technical College and complete his training to become an electrician, like his uncles. His future stretched out before him, like the familiar roads he jogged along every day, but Ahmaud probably wasn't thinking about the future. He was likely just thinking about his run and where it would take him that day. It would take him across US Route 17. The four-lane highway that travelers took to the resorts on Jekyll Island also served as a boundary between black and white in the area. Ahmaud's route that day took him across the highway and into the predominantly white neighborhood of Satilla Shores

Angi is the Director of Development at the SLA and she gives us some insight into her career both as a fundraiser and as a professional speaker. Listen now and be enlightened by Angi Conversation Highlights [01:26] Angi shares the origin of the Squam lakes association. [02:30] She narrates how she started fundraising from childhood.  [04:47] Takeaway #1: Fundraising is easier if you're already a part of that community and you know people. [06:25] Takeaway #2: Events are not generally the cornerstone that should be holding up your fundraising plan for your nonprofit organization. [08:40] If you want a "friend-raiser" or fun for the community just to create awareness about your organization then events can be used. [11:40] Takeaway #3: Angi states that she is yet to meet anyone in any career, whose career would not benefit from an improvement in communication skills. [16:15] Angi points out as a professional speaker the importance of having a professional headshot and "Bio" that are ready to go as a professional speaker. [19:47] Takeaway #4: The more clicks someone has to do on your website to make a donation, the less likely they are to follow through. [25:00] Angi highlights the benefits of being a member of the SLA.  [29:02] If you're looking to found an organization but you want to control, then you should consider incorporating your business as a "B Corp".  [34:35] Before starting your own nonprofit organization, consider if there is another organization for that population in your area that you can put your effort behind and support. [35:05] If you're starting a Nonprofit there's very little chance that you would be making a reasonable salary doing it within the first two years. [37:22]How to contact Angi. Remarkable quotes [04:45] "It's really hard to walk into a community and be a fundraiser when you don't know anyone". [19:47] “The more clicks someone has to do to on your website in order to make a donation, the less likely they are to follow through”. [28.52] "Nonprofit is a way of incorporating a business that requires you to have board members and essentially give up control". [34:35] Angi's advice before starting a Nonprofit; "Look hard at what already exists in your area for the population that you are trying to serve". Angi Francesco is the Director of Development at the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) in New Hampshire and. She is responsible for fundraising and oversees all public relations and communication from the SLA. Angi works on developing major donors strategies and pipelines, the annual appeal asks, membership appeals planned to give, and grant writing - or as she likes to call it: fiction writing for nonprofits. Previously, she was at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse, where she grew support from major donors by 15% and increased giving for Program Support by 34% over two years. She also established a monthly giving program that continues to grow and thrive.   Today, she is fundraising through a pandemic - and some things are still bringing in funds. She holds a BA in History from Northern Vermont University and a Masters in Communication from SNHU. She lives in Holderness with her seven-year-old daughter and two snarky and incredibly co-dependent felines. Because of the coronavirus, she now also harbors four COVID refugees who escaped from Queens, New York seven weeks ago. California to Build Animal Overpass over Busy Highway

California will be building the world's largest animal overpass to help its ecosystem. Environmentalists from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and California transportation authorities are planning to build a bridge over the US Route 101, a major highway in the United States. The 10-lane highway cuts across the Santa Monica Mountains, obstructing the ecological community in the area. According to Beth Pratt, an NWF official, the construction of the highway disconnected some animals from their ecosystem, leaving them trapped, isolated, and unable to mate. In a study funded by the US National Park Service, scientists found that isolation put mountain lions in the ecosystem at risk of extinction. The disruption of the mountains led the animals to inbreeding, which lessened the animals' ability to adapt to the changing environment and made them susceptible to new threats and diseases. Unless the isolated lions reconnect with other lion populations, the researchers said that their species will become extinct in 50 years. To resolve this issue, conservationists are going to build the overpass to ensure safe passage for wildlife species and to give them access to possible mates and more food. The overpass will be filled with trees and bushes to make it blend into the mountainous landscape. Its design will also incorporate high edges to try to block lights and sounds from the busy highway below. The overpass is expected to be completed by 2023. Eighty percent of its funding will come from private sources, while the remaining is from public funds allocated for conservation projects. As of last August, over $13 million have already been collected from private individuals and organizations who donated to support its cause.

Originally, a carriage house and tavern servicing stage coaches stood there from 1790 until December 1826, when it was sold to Genesee County. The carriage house still stands on the property today. The tavern serviced travelers from Batavia, NY to Warsaw, NY traveling along what is now known as US Route 20. At that point, the facility took in paupers, unwed mothers, the insane, and orphans. By the early 1950s, the facility served only as a nursing home, where it was then closed by 1972; stepping aside for a new facility in Batavia, NY. After which, the building stood empty until 1992, when it was re-opened as Carriage Village, a mall of unique shops. Since then it has transformed into a paranormal investigation hot spot and has been operating public and private ghost hunting tours, paranormal investigations, historical tours and even special events The building served as a research center into the paranormal, and hosts ghost hunts. The property was purchased by a couple interested in making money off the paranormal in late 2009 (Sharon and Jerry Coyle) and has since reopened for ghost/historical tours and special events for the entire community such as art fairs, festivals and car shows. It was also featured on Ghost Adventures on September 24, 2010. There have been sightings of a 7-foot-tall man named Roy who has been captured in many photographs.  Note:  No actual research is taking place here.

Danger-Zone Most Dangerous Roads Danger-Zone is the title of this weeks pod. Ruthann explores Americas most dangerous roads. Is your state in the rankings? We talk about where most people run risk of being killed just by being on these roads. Danger is every where if you are on this list Americas Bad Roads Although the consistent, unchanging open road can be relaxing, some roads require a bit more concentration. While there are terrifying yet thrilling roads all over the world, there are plenty of roads that offer adventure right in the US. From Alaska's Dalton Highway to Florida's Highway 1, these are the most dangerous roads in the US. Alaska's nightmarish Dalton Highway stretches some 400 miles through remote forests, tundras, and over the Yukon River. What makes this drive extra scary is its 240-mile stretch with no gas stations, restaurants, hotels, or any other basic services. The road also contains multiple signs warning of steep grades and avalanches.A 181-mile stretch of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Los Angeles was ranked as the most deadly stretch of road in the US in 2010. The study revealed that in 15 years alone, 1,069 people had perished on the road.   A stretch of US Route 550 traverses three 10,000-foot mountains passes, and winds across steep cliffs and hairpin curves, all without guardrails. Local folklore says Colorado's Million Dollar Highway got its name because an early traveler said you'd have to pay her one million dollars to drive it again. Montana is known for being one of the most dangerous states to drive in, mostly because of its long stretches of highway in between towns. So if you have an accident, you're on your own, as it takes an average of 80 minutes for an ambulance to arrive Highway 2 is particularly dangerous; it maintains a 70mph speed limit through mountainous roads. The road has proven to be so treacherous that Washington State recently spent $60 million to make the road safer.Interstate 45 was ranked as the second-deadliest highway in the US in 2016 after analysts found that the highway averaged 56.5 fatal accidents per 100 miles of roadway. The most dangerous part of the route is in Houston, with 51 fatal wrecks from 2011 to 2015. So tune in to this weeks Podcast and see if you are in the Danger-Zone on Americas roads! In 2016, she was the recipient of the Los Angeles City Historical Society's J. Thomas Owen Award for illuminating L.A. history. In her documentary East LA Interchange, Betsy explores the neighborhood of Boyle Heights, a city that was once one of the most diverse city's throughout the USA, a microcosm where  Latinos, Asians, African-Americans, and the largest settlement of Jews west of Chicago lived and worked together side by side. Targeted by government policies, real estate laws and California planners, Boyle Heights was thrown to wolves  when City Planners decided to build one of the world's busiest freeway interchanges   joining together Interstate 5, Interstate 10, US Route 101, and California Route 60. Boyle Heights is a testament to endurance. It's residents understand struggle but they are also resilient. Will it continue to thrive? Can it  survive gentrification and environmental pollution? See what can happen when a community works towards the common good. This film took 9 years to come to fruition.Betsy's films have been honored with multiple awards at festivals around the world. In the colonial days of Ichabod Crain, the Headless Horseman and the Knickerbockers, a stagecoach, post road connected New York City and the state capital of Albany.
