In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste, alongside fellow Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were arrested in Cairo, Egypt under charges of holding illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation declared as a terrorist group by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. Kriv Stenders is a prolific Australian filmmaker, with his work spanning features, documentaries, and TV series. His latest film, The Correspondent, translates this period of Greste's life, as documented in his 2017 memoir The First Casualty, to screen, with Richard Roxburgh portraying the award winning journalist. The Correspondent is a salient reminder of the need for a global free press, and it arrives at a time where journalists around the world, even Australia, are being vilified, condemned, or at worse, being imprisoned or murdered for their work. While The Correspondent considers the legal battles that Greste and his journalistic colleagues endured between 2013 through to 2015, when Greste was released, the film then reflects on another attack on journalists, with Stenders and writer Peter Duncan taking us to another part of Greste's life, when he worked alongside Kate Peyton (portrayed by Yael Stone) in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2011. These scenes act as an insight to the complex ways that reporting from war zones leads to the aggressors violently controlling the passage of information, with The Correspondent then amplifying the message of advocating for free press.A central aspect to that advocacy is Richard Roxburgh's turn as Peter Greste. Arguably, this is the finest performance of Richard Roxburgh's career, with the weight of expectation, trauma, uncertainty, and grief lingering on his mind, often only appearing through glances or brief looks at his fellow inmates. Roxburgh echoes the work of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, another film which sees the acclaimed actor give a career best turn, and in doing so, brings to life Greste in an empathetic and supportive manner. It is as if this is the only performance that matters in his career. It's powerful stuff. I carry that in mind when I sit down to discuss the film with Kriv Stenders, oddly for the first time in my career. I've long admired Stenders work, from having caught The Illustrated Family Doctor in a small screen at Luna Cinemas Leederville, to being knocked off my feet with Boxing Day and Lucky Country. He then took his filmmaking to a new level with Red Dog and Red Dog: True Blue, and with the back of this run of films, he has examined the role that Australian stories and voices have on our cultural identity. Few filmmakers in Australian cinema get more than one or two films, and yet Stenders has crafted an enduring filmography that comments on and furthers our understanding of what Australian culture, identity, and cinema, can be. While this is my first time talking with Kriv, I know it won't be my last. The Correspondent arrives in Australian cinemas on 17 April 2025, with Q&A screenings continuing to take place at select cinemas. Make sure to check your local cinema guide for session details. In this Podcast, we are going to travel from Edinburgh down to the Borders passing through some medieval villages on route. We will be travelling on roads built by the Romans in the 1st and 2nd   centurie and we'll be looking at some scintillating castles and other fascinating buildings on our way. You will hear of true Thomas or Thomas the Rhymer whose prophesies were uncannily accurate and also of Maiden Lilliard, the warrior lady who had her legs chopped off during the battle of Ancrum and continued to fight against those who had killed her lover. We will also look into the ruined Border Abbeys at Dryburgh and Kelso and take a look at Roxburgh castle ruins where James 2nd of Scotland was killed by one of his own cannons. The ruins stand in the grounds of the fabulous Floors castle, home to the Duke of Roxburgh. And as dramatic historical events have ebbed and flowed, the gentle waters of the river Tweed, which gave its name to the famous Tweed fabric, continues to meander throughout the Border region although most of the woollen mills have now closed.  If you wish to contribute a small sum towards the creation of my Podcasts, please go to. https://buymeacoffee.com/uniquescotland

Melissa Roxburgh says she was so surprised when she got the call that Netflix was picking up Manifest for a final season to complete the story. Roxburgh added this show is a love letter from the cast of Manifest to all of the Manifesters who stuck by the show and never gave up, the ones who rewatched episodes, and wrote in letters. She said everyone's voice matters and in this instance it added life into a once cancelled show. When asked if we would see beyond the death date, Melissa confirmed we would, adding that the second part of the season (set to come out next year) gets even more intense. In the meantime, Roxburgh said she would miss being able to knock on Josh Dallas's (who plays Ben Stone, her brother on the series) trailer door, the shenanigans of the cast and crew, and filming every day. But for now, she said she couldn't be happier for fans to take this final flight with them. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Polina Jdanova Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Two years after the brutal murder of Grace turned their lives upside down, the Stone family is in shambles as a devastated Ben continues to mourn his wife and search for his kidnapped daughter, Eden. *Manifest is currently available to stream on Netflix - with part two set to come out next year. That may be true on its face, but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive to be as indispensable as possible while we are here.  De Gaulle certainly lived to that ideal.     J.F. Roxburgh, the first headmaster of the Stowe School, endeavored to make the boys he taught into men of good character and moral courage who would be “acceptable at a dance and invaluable in a shipwreck.” That is, perhaps, the best description of an “indispensable man” that I have been able to find.     We should strive to be the kind of men who exhibit strong minds and strong bodies.  The kind of men who are equally well prepared for a black tie dinner or a stressful and rapidly evolving event.    Every day, we should remember examples from the past who lived to that ideal - Marcus Aurelias, Tecumseh, George Washington.  We become indispensable by becoming virtuous men, driven by ideals and buoyed by strong minds and strong bodies.    Remember: “Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. ” — Tecumseh   Until Monday…Out of role!

Patrick and Tor are back and this time it's a little less tech-talk and a lot more chat in the research, medical and health space. Among other things, we talk about how vitamin supplementation can improve cognitive function (brain performance), uterus transplants (it's a thing), how improving cardiovascular fitness can add 6 to 8 years to our ‘health-span', software developed to catch students cheating, Patrick gives us an amazing insight into life in Malta (where he's currently at on his global adventure) and he also shares with us how he considers his twin brother to be something of a biological safety net, in case he needs a new organ. Patrick and Tor are back talking about tech that can make our lives better and sometimes, worse. This time we speak about why touch screens in cars are way more dangerous and distracting than old-fashioned knobs and buttons (to do the same jobs), technology helping people with dementia, companies integrating batteries into the actual frames of their electric cars, Elon Musk getting fat shamed, how our brain responds under fMRI when we think about the different people in our lives, power-saving mode on my (your) phone (apparently I need to use it), the things that chew up phone battery and for some reason, we talk about the very non-tech topic of intermittent fasting. I was very surprised), the de-extinction of animals (Tasmanian Tiger anyone?), poverty in Australia (how the poverty line is determined), banning phones in schools, the death of point-and-shoot cameras and lots more. The first half of this chat with Tor and Patrick has nothing to do with life-improving tech but nonetheless, it was super interesting. And unplanned. We learned about (younger) Tor being chased by the police while sitting on the front of her dad's Mercedes holding a shotgun, Patrick ‘coming out' on national TV (his identical twin brother, who was also on the show didn't know) and I disclose a ‘Mary story' that will probably get me trouble with the Old Darl. Oh well, (shoulder shrug). On a tech note, we talk about the father who warns his sons about their mum's bad moods via text-alerts, a 'sand battery' that can store heat at 500C for months, TikTok stealing your cyber-stuff, personalised action figure dolls (with your face), the first company to implant a human brain-computer interface (WTF!), forty-dollar fitness trackers and new features on Android and Apple devices that can transcribe words in real-time (during a phone call), meaning that hearing impaired people can read (instead of listen to) the words of the person on the other end of the phone! So, a bloke spent his life savings buying some pretend land in the metaverse. If he's happy with his ‘investment', does that mean he got a good deal? Maybe my idea of ‘crazy' is his idea of prudent market speculation. And down the track we might discover that he was the smart one, when another investor buys it from him for double! But what is value anyway? Is it about the objective ‘thing' or is it about our subjective assessment of what we think that thing is worth? And could floating cities be one of the answers to rising sea levels (it's happening)? And what about the Webb telescope that can see back in time (that idea does my head in)? And what new health gizmos and gadgets are coming into the market to make our ‘personal health management' more effective and efficient? And what's happening at the intersection of biology, technology and medicine? For better or worse, we're increasingly moving towards replacing biological bits with non-biological bits; is it all positive or are there some potential dangers? It's a busy show!
