In the five weeks since Donald Trump's inauguration, the landscape for migrants and asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border has shifted dramatically. The new administration is pursuing an aggressive crackdown on asylum seekers, closing legal pathways and ramping up deportations. Migrants who had secured appointments through the CBP One app under the Biden administration found those suddenly canceled. Many are now stranded in Mexico, left in legal limbo and vulnerable to exploitation and danger. The administration is meanwhile increasing its deportations into Mexico of thousands of migrants from Mexico and elsewhere. This episode takes a deep dive into the current situation in Nogales, Sonora, where asylum seekers and deported individuals are facing increasing hardship and uncertainty. We speak with three frontline experts from the Kino Border Initiative (KBI), an organization providing humanitarian aid, advocacy, and psychosocial support to migrants in crisis. Our guests—Karen Hernández, KBI's advocacy coordinator; Bernie Eguia, coordinator of psychosocial support; and Diana Fajardo, a psychologist working with recently deported individuals—share firsthand accounts of the humanitarian crisis. They describe: The immediate impact of Trump's policies, including the January 20 mass cancellation of CBP One asylum appointments and a coming surge in deportations. How migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Mexico, and elsewhere are left with dwindling options inside Mexico, facing threats from organized crime, unsafe conditions, and legal roadblocks to seeking refuge. The role of the Mexican government, which is now receiving deportees under an opaque and militarized process, keeping humanitarian groups at arm's length. The psychological toll of displacement, uncertainty, and family separation—and how organizations like KBI are working to provide support amid shrinking resources. Despite the bleak reality, our guests emphasize the resilience of the people they serve. Even in desperate moments, migrants are holding onto hope and searching for ways to protect themselves and their families. But without systemic change, there is only so much that can be done to relieve suffering. While recalling the urgent need for humane policies that prioritize protection over deterrence, this conversation underscores the crucial role of organizations like KBI in providing aid and advocating for migrants' rights.

Predators I've Caught With Chris Hansen

James "Jim"" Clifford Rauch was a potential predator caught in a KBI sting in connection with the Bowling Green, Kentucky investigation. Despite never being questioned by Chris, he gained notoriety due to his tumultuous journey to the sting house and his outrageous interrogation with the police, where he jokes with detectives and goes off topic numerous times.  Rauch, started a webcam session with “Cheyenne," a girl he believed to be thirteen. He literally started off by asking the decoy if she wanted to give him oral sex. Over the course of eleven days, Rauch would send naked pictures of himself (one of them in his office) as well as make plans to take her back to his place for sex.   Jim would take off in his car drunk on his way to see Cheyenne. He would get lost on his way, calling her and cursing like a sailor about not being able to find the house, saying things like, “The bears are looking for my dick!” When he arrived at the sting house, no one was there except the police to pick him up.   Paid Partner of TruthFinder® https://www.truthfinder.com/predators    This is another Hurrdat Media Production. We reviewed Department of Commerce's hiring policies and procedures to determine if they were adequate for staff overseeing financial matters. This was because Commerce hired a staff member in 2020 who pleaded guilty to felonies in Pennsylvania before being hired by Commerce. Commerce officials told us they were not aware of the staff member's crimnal history. We found that Commerce's hiring policies and procedures were not adequate to mitigate the risks associated with hiring applicants with a criminal history. This is because Commerce's hiring policies and procedures don't include any type of criminal history check for any jobs other than the 1 in statute. Commerce officials told us they don't perform state-level criminal history checks on applicants because they don't think they have the authority to perform them through the KBI. However, an alternative to KBI would be to use a Consumer Reporting Agency to perform criminal history checks. These companies may provide employment screening services that include credit checks, license verification, and criminal history information from state and federal databases. We also found that Commerce didn't adequately document their hiring procedures for 3 of the 5 staff we reviewed. reference check summaries weren't available for 3 of the 5 employees we reviewed, and interview notes were missing for 1 of the 5 employees we reviewed. This means we can't determine if Commerce is following their processes consistently. State retention policies require agencies to retain hiring documentation in the full personnel file for the length of the employee's tenure plus 3 years. However, Commerce officials told us that they don't retain some hiring records past 3 years from the date of hire.

To Catch a Predator Dustin McPhetridge FULL Police Interrogation"I thought you was wantin' to be shaved...down there."-Dustin showing that Barber-ism begins at home.Dustin Jacob McPhetridge appeared on the Bowling Green, Kentucky investigation of To Catch a Predator. He is most known for his disability, as well as his outrageous demands while in prison.Dustin McPhetridge was 26 when he arrived at the sting house with the hope of meeting a thirteen year old girl named "Laura" that he thought he was chatting with online. He had a twisted and sordid chat with the girl wanting to shave her privates, get her drunk and have rough anal sex with her. Dustin, the consummate gentleman, gave Laura a choice on where to put his sperm first (mouth, pussy, or ass). He also wanted her to wear a pair of panties for 2-3 days straight and then send them to him. He even sent a picture of a couple having sex. The icing on the cake was when he said that he wanted to have a threesome with her EIGHT year old sister. [1]After a four hour drive, Dustin waddled into the house with an electric razor and KY Jelly and tried to coax the decoy over to do all the twisted things he had on his mind. He instead got to meet Chris Hansen. Dustin went right into victim mode blaming the girl for the situation, saying she led him on.After his arrest, Dustin pulls every pity string he can ranging from his disability to his weight to getting bullied with Sgt. Dudinskie, the officer in charge of his interview. Dudinskie fires back with details of his chatlog that showed Dustin to be a very disgusting predator that hid behind his disability. [2]He was sentenced to five years in prison for traveling across state lines to meet a minor for sex. He was also sentenced to eight years for possession of child pornography. The sentences ran concurrently but because Dustin wasn't convicted on the CP charge until two years after his first conviction, he actually ended up with a ten year sentence.[3] Dustin was released on lifetime federal sex-offender probation and now helps to run a convenience store in Surgoinsville, Tennessee.Behind the scenesDustin has cerebral palsy. He demonstrated before, during, and after the sting his devious behavior of using his disability to garner sympathy as well as escape trouble. Casey and the lead KBI investigator even said they felt sorry for Dustin when he saw him struggle to enter the house, but kept in mind his reason for showing up at the house was to molest a child.Partway through serving his sentence, he wrote a letter to his convicting judge saying he had learned his lesson and requesting that he immediately be released from serving the remainder of his sentence. If his request was denied, in lieu of release, he requested a walk-in jacuzzi in his cell. Both requests were denied.Dustin was scheduled to be back in court February 2020 due to probation violations, mainly failing his sex offender treatment program, subsequently being kicked out, and polygraph tests asking if he had viewed child pornography since his release. A series of continuances have been given due to Dustin's health, COVID-19 concerns, and scheduling conflicts.[4] Dustin was given yet another continuance September 2021 because his family had paid vacation plans. Recent photos show that Dustin uses a wheelchair. During examination of his counselor, he revealed that Dustin has spent the most time of any offender in the program because he either refuses to own the actions that led him to this point, or makes excuses on why he can't make any positive changes in his life. Dustin also gained the ire from his peers in his classes because they believed his rehabilitation to be a waste of time. In a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski was joined by former FBI Special Agent and regular contributor Jennifer Coffindaffer. Their discussion raised some provocative questions about the display of evidence on national television, specifically in the ongoing investigation of the notorious serial killer BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill). Brueski opened the conversation by discussing a rather controversial moment where evidence, specifically a pantyhose, was showcased on the Banfield show. “I've talked to like 10 FBI agents since this happened and everyone I've talked to has said they just utterly cringed when they saw him playing with the pantyhose on Banfield,” Brueski revealed. The aim, as he mentioned, was to garner national attention, hoping that it would spur the investigation forward.   Jennifer Coffindaffer responded emphatically, calling out the action as a definitive no-no. "You don't do that to gain the attention," she said, shedding light on the ethical concerns surrounding such an act. She elaborated on how the media circus surrounding the case can often derail from its primary objective: truth and justice for the victims and their families.   Coffindaffer shared her reservations about the manner in which certain cases are being investigated and discussed in the media. "When I say looked hard into it in terms of what the investigative authorities [are saying], KBI says that the woman in Hayes is absolutely not connected to BTK," she mentioned. Her emphasis was on the emotional toll these media speculations can take on families, who have to wrestle with the horrifying possibilities their loved ones might have faced.   The conversation further delved into the formation of task forces to handle such high-profile cases. Coffindaffer, drawing from her extensive FBI background, shared her confusion regarding the inclusion of media personnel in these task forces. "I would never ever [consider] informing these task forces nor would my bosses... want the media involved," she explained. Her primary concern being that media professionals lack the authority and tools required for effective investigative work.   The duo raised valid concerns about the implications such liberties in evidence handling and media involvement could have on the outcome of cases. As Brueski pointed out, mishandling investigations, especially outside of a jurisdiction, can jeopardize the case's standing in court. Coffindaffer shared this sentiment, stating, "from the media standpoint, there's absolutely no purpose, zero purpose."   A poignant moment in the conversation emerged when Coffindaffer emphasized the personal nature of these investigations for law enforcement professionals. She painted a vivid picture of investigators who pour their heart and soul into their cases, seeking justice and truth, often setting aside the glamour of media limelight.   In conclusion, the "Hidden Killers" podcast shed light on the complexities surrounding high-profile criminal investigations. While media attention can indeed propel investigations forward, there's a thin line between informative reporting and turning investigations into a spectacle. The core question that emerged was: In our quest for justice, are we sometimes blurring the boundaries of ethics and sensationalism? So, as one continues to ponder the discussions of the episode, the lingering question remains: Are our current investigative methods prioritizing spectacle over substance? To Catch a Predator Dustin McPhetridge FULL Police interview"I thought you was wantin' to be shaved...down there."-Dustin showing that Barber-ism begins at home.Dustin Jacob McPhetridge appeared on the Bowling Green, Kentucky investigation of To Catch a Predator. Time that could be better invested in their recovery.[5]TriviaDustin apparently "doesn't like lawyers", as he revealed in his police interrogation.Dustin misunderstood Chris when he said he wasn't law enforcement and couldn't arrest him.    The Marion County Record was raided by cops after it was believed the paper was illegally obtaining information about private citizens.  You know how one sided this story has been, and of course, they could be right.  The police chief could be corrupt.  But it's about to be a small town tsunami as all the national media, and now, an outrageously high priced and powerful legal team in KC is on the case for this tiny little paper.  They will overwhelm even the KBI.    President Trump says he's got all the goods he needs on Fulton County, GA and the election in 2020 and will release it Monday.      Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy first went viral in Iowa for rapping a song by Eminem and now his exchange with an LGBTQ+ activist has vaulted him to an even higher level.  It's just fantastic and we'll share the deets with you.    The Chiefs lose a tight end for the year but have good news in the secondary as we get you up to date on the injury list.    And KU announces $300 million worth of projects will begin work at the end of this football season but may be creating higher expectations than they are about to deliver.  I'll explain.

Time that could be better invested in their recovery.[5]TriviaDustin apparently "doesn't like lawyers", as he revealed in his police interrogation.Dustin misunderstood Chris when he said he wasn't law enforcement and couldn't arrest him. Dustin thought Chris meant that no arrests were going to be made, which was obviously not the case. Dustin brings this up in his interrogation, saying that he wishes Chris didn't "lie" to him about him not going to be arrested.Dustin has a large affection for his mother (due to the fact that she talks people out of pressing charges for the things he does), requesting that she be put in custody of him during his trial. The judge denied his request.Affectionately nicknamed “D-MAC” by fans of To Catch A Predator..He made a handful of wrestling DVDs for professional wrestler Ricky Morton. He lost all the digital footage when cops seized his computer since it also housed his collection of CP. He also ran Morton's website. In a now infamous article on the site made a couple of months before his arrest, he pleads with the wrestling community to donate to Morton's legal fees stemming from his arrest for non-payment of child support.Ricky Morton references Dustin in an interview about the wrestling DVDs, calling him the "cripple boy". Right after, he talks about seeing Dustin on "the predator show".[6]Despite his disability, he served the most time of all those caught in the Bowling Green sting. This is probably because he committed three different crimes in three different jurisdictions. His most serious was the federal crime of crossing states lines to commit crimes involving children.

Randy was seen at the party by plenty of people, and although there are conflicting reports on whether he was drinking or taking drugs, he appeared very inebriated. Somehow, in the midst of a party, Randy and the car he drove there disappeared without a trace. KBI is a binational program in the border cities of Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona, which includes a shelter and soup kitchen for migrants, education and encounter programs, along with advocacy outreach in both the U.S. and Mexico. If you enjoyed hearing from her in Episode 2, here is the full interview. Joanna shares the story of what brought her to KBI in 2011 and the stories that continue to inspire her work. She reflects on how her migrant ministry is truly a vocation, and how that ministry has been enhanced and deepened through her own motherhood since the recent birth of her daughter. The full interview includes stories of the many artistic talents she's encountered among migrants, from a now “semi-famous” painter to many talented singers. She also reflects on persistence in the midst of adversity and offers her take on reframing migration in a more positive light through insights drawn from Catholic theology.

21-year-old Megan Foglesong disappeared from Alden, Kansas, around the end of November 2015. When we first covered Megan's story in 2016, nearly everyone pointed to Megan's on-again, off-again boyfriend, David Madden. Megan attempted to leave him in the past and told others around Thanksgiving of 2015 that she was leaving him again. Several days later, Megan sent a message to a friend indicating that she was back at David's, then she went silent. Around this time, David texted the local undersheriff to inform him that Megan had stolen from him and ran off. In hindsight, that story about Megan stealing seems rather convenient, possibly a way to explain her absence. But at that time, no one thought much of it. They figured Megan would pop up somewhere soon. Maybe she left David and was hiding? Time passed, and Megan's loved ones became more concerned. David didn't seem interested in finding Megan. Despite rumors and suspicions swirling around town about David's involvement, Megan's case went cold. As the years went by, David went on to commit a series of other crimes that left the community convinced that he was responsible for Megan's disappearance. Killer Queens: A True Crime Podcast

On April 3rd, 2004, 23-year-old Alonzo Brooks left his home in Gardner, Kansas, and told his mother, Maria, he was headed to a party with friends. That was the last time she'd see her son alive. Less than 24 hours later, Maria tried to file a missing persons report on her son in La Cygne, Kansas, about an hour away from their home. Alonzo's friends who'd given him a ride to the party somehow left without him, at a party in a small town, where he was one of only three people of color in attendance. 27 days after Alonzo went missing, his family found his body on a creekbed, not far from the farmhouse where the party had been. Strangely enough, his body wasn't hidden, and the area had been searched multiple times before, with no signs of Alonzo. His manner of death was initially ruled as “undetermined” and closed by the KBI, stating there was no evidence of a homicide. Alonzo's family has continued to fight to prove that he was the victim of a hate crime and that his murderers are still walking free.  Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here!
