TSC News TV host Fred Richani interviews filmmaker John Makens about his long-awaited "Art And Life: The Story of Jim Phillips", chronicling the iconic skateboard and surfboard artist and his legacy.   "Art And Life: The Story of Jim Phillips" Synopsis: A pioneer of graphic art, Jim Phillips, known for his bold and eye popping imagery, has left an unforgettable mark on the world of rock posters, surf, and skateboard art. Drawing inspiration from his life in Santa Cruz, California, Jim's journey from publishing his first artwork in 1962 to becoming the art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards, shaped the golden era of skateboarding. Beneath the thriving success, however, lay the weight of high demands and built up tensions, leading to the closure of Phillips Studios. A resilient spirit, Jim bounces back by freelancing and reviving his rock poster art career, crafting cherished collectible posters for renowned musicians. This documentary explores Jim's dynamic life and career, showcasing his iconic work that has not only defined an era but has also secured his place in modern art history. Reflecting on a life lived with dedication and joy, Jim's story is a profound narrative of resilience, passion, and enduring artistic vision. Jim Phillips is an artist whose cartoonish mosaics of California outdoor life have informed public understanding and appreciation of skateboarding, surfing, hot rod and rock music cultures. In ART AND LIFE: THE STORY OF JIM PHILLIPS, documentarian John Makens tells his story, from the times when Phillips sketched for fiberglas companies amidst a surfer party lifestyle to when Santa Cruz Skateboards & NHS brought him in to develop the first full-board designs that would first cement skateboarding's devil-may-care attitude and rebellious public perception in the '70s-'80s. The "red dot" Santa Cruz Skateboards logo and the Screaming Hand are Jim's claims to fame, instantly recognizable to a subculture. However, Phillips, the artist, is not, despite also producing rock posters for the likes of The Beatles and Neil Young. Watching Phillips dig through drawers and cabinet to pull up old surfer magazines and prints is akin to traveling through time; the man is an anthropological nexus point, bringing together punks, skateboarders, hippies and gearheads alike. I interview John Makens, the director of ART AND LIFE: THE STORY OF JIM PHILLIPS. The 81-year-old graphic designer Jim Phillips may not be instantly recognizable, his art - the "Screaming Hand," the "red dot" Santa Cruz Skateboards logo, the myriad of custom skateboarding full-board decals, the cartoonish California outdoor mosaics, the rock posters for the likes of The Beatles & Neil Young - absolutely is. His art spans decades, hobbies and generations, cultivating the identities of skateboarding and surfing cultures in ways that inspire current public perception. Makens and I discuss what makes Phillips special, how he and his crew animated Phillips' art within the documentary, how his relationship to Phillips evolved over the course of the doc's 10+ year production and more. --- Follow The Movies on social media: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Steve Olson honed his skateboarding expertise sneaking into swimming pools across Southern California while growing up in the 1970s. His skating was wedded to a surf-centric childhood at a time when the crossover between the two was at its height. Olson earned a sponsorship by Santa Cruz Skateboards in 1979 and quickly became notorious for introducing a punk rock aesthetic and cool defiance to the skate scene. He's also lived outside of surf-skate norms as an actor, artist, musician, and father, blending all those interests into a singular personality. In this episode, Olson sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about their first encounters, his contemporary art practice, the art of trespassing, the surf-skate connection, cat-and-mouse thrills, his greatest moments on a skateboard, extreme individualism, and the memories that have stuck with him.

For the last several years, Spidey and I have gotten to know each other more than ever, and he's come by dozens of times and picked up my acoustic Guitar and played in my office. We've had lots of fun and I've seen his talent on many levels, something that is hard to translate in words. Check out @theGentleOrchestra on Instagram and there is a link on the profile page to his music. Spidey alongside myself, grew up in what I call the Pioneering Age of Skateboarding, when most everything done today was created. A simple time when we just skated with our friends and we happened to be lucky enough and just talented enough to sneak into the world of Pro Skateboarding. Spidey had some very memorable, collectible, and creative Pro Model boards on Santa Cruz Skateboards, went on to a music career with Capital Records, and today spends most of his time surfing and playing music. He also designed many sock variations for Merge4 socks in recent years. The conversation drifts across many areas of music, skateboarding, surfing, and more and hope you enjoy and learn something you may not have known before. Thanks for listening.

In this mid-week episode, I (Rhys) chat with artist Russ Morland, who goes by the name, Lurk (@lurklovesyou on Instagram) — all of Russ' links can be found here. Russ is based on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada, and with his art, he creates weird worlds and inhabits them with strange creatures. His work is trippy, psychedelic, fun and vibrant.Russ draws inspiration from the worlds of lowbrow, street art, skateboarding, and board games, and throughout his career, his work has been featured on shoes, guitar pedals, underwear, skateboards, card games and a whole load more, for prominent clients including Mastodon, Britney Spears, Santa Cruz Skateboards, Etnies Shoes, and RedBull. In this conversation we talk about Russ’ tough upbringing in the north of England and how he found his way to creating art from a young age, feeling like a bit of a “weird, loner kid”, as he puts it in his own words. We talk about his early influences and how he developed the vivid, strange and unique style that his work is synonymous with today. We also talk about a mural that Russ was commissioned to create by the city of Nanaimo in Vancouver, as part of the Hub City Walls Project.Russ was chosen by the project to inject a bit of fun and colour onto a grey wall in an area of the city that would benefit from having such a cool, interesting piece of art painted onto one of its walls. The city approved his proposed piece and he got to work on creating the mural, which took about 10 days to finish. After its completion, the mural attracted some negative social media attention, with a small number of people who misinterpreted and misconstrued the work, deeming it to be “inappropriate”.This then sparked an online conversation about art in public spaces, with many people — including the project and city — jumping in to praise the piece, as well as defending their right to have it there in the first place. This was a difficult and entirely unexpected thing for Russ to navigate, especially as the intention behind the piece was never to offend or be provocative, quite the opposite, it was meant to be fun, vibrant and interesting. Something that could breathe a bit of life back into the surrounding community.Thematically, we also talk:The lowbrow art movement, British/Canadian cultural differences, music, developing as an artist, being a father, sobriety, self-awareness and reflection, anxiety, the NFT art world and therapy.I’m a huge fan of Russ’ art and after having spoken to him back and forth in DMs a fair bit, I knew we were going to instantly click when in conversation, so hopefully that came across.Hope you enjoy our chat!

In this episode of The Shetler Show, Anthony Shetler starts with a special message for the podcast listeners. The show starts out by Anthony thanking all the supporters of him, his brand, the show, and skateboarding in general. They begin by getting adjusted to some Skype complications, and then the show really gets crackin. We learn about Andrew Cannon’s morning rituals, including giving his doggy a shot in the morning, yoga, biking, reading, and spandex outfits. Andrew is a dad living in Santa Cruz CA. Andrew Cannon is 29 years old, and he has new twin babies. Andrew feels lucky to be where he is at now, as the Brand Manager for NHS companies, OJ Wheels and Santa Cruz Skateboards. Andrew Cannon feels that he is so lucky to have had the career in skateboarding that he has had. He talks about why touring is so tough, and what it takes to switch roles and sit behind the desk now. Andrew breaks down exactly why he loves his job, and what it is like to be a Brand Manager. Anthony Shetler and Andrew Cannon delve into networking in skateboarding, work experience, schooling, marketing yourself as a skateboarder, and why he skates for himself now. They discuss brands in the skate industry, including World Industries fall from grace, and exactly why skateboarders need to do more then just have talent. Anthony Shetler feels that if you can become a pro skater, getting a regular job can be a bit easier. They get into why the #AINCaliTrippin tour was so productive and fun, and Anthony talks about how he would like to run his own skate company.
