In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with debut Toronto author Tim Welsh about his novel, Ley Lines, published by Guernica Editions, 2025. Set in the waning days of the Klondike Gold Rush, Ley Lines begins in the mythical boom town of Sawdust City, Yukon Territory. Luckless prospector Steve Ladle has accepted an unusual job offer: accompany a local con artist to the unconquered top of a nearby mountain. What he finds there briefly upends the town's fading fortunes, attracting a crowd of gawkers and acolytes, while inadvertently setting in motion a series of events that brings about the town's ruin. In the aftermath, a ragtag group of characters is sent reeling across the Klondike, struggling to come to grips with a world that has been suddenly and unpredictably upturned. As they attempt to carve out a place for themselves, our protagonists reckon with the various personal, historical and supernatural forces that have brought them to this moment. A wildly inventive, psychedelic odyssey, Ley Lines flips the frontier narrative on its ear, and heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice in Canadian fiction. About Tim Welsh: Tim Welsh was born in Ithaca, New York and raised in Ottawa, Canada, where he completed an MA in English Language and Literature at Carleton University. He now lives in Toronto. Ley Lines is his first novel. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027. One of the reasons the BAOS team started visiting Hamilton, ON was MERIT Brewing, and it's well overdue to have them on the pod. Co-Founder and Head Brewer Aaron Spinney, affectionately known as Spinney to everybody but his mother, joined Cee and Nate to chat about his beginnings in beer via Niagara College, his history with Sawdust City's Sam Corbeil (friend of the show), his passion for wine beer hybrids, how they approach distribution, why breweries should be able to ship country-wide, beer verticals, Spinney dove into some Hamilton history, and why Hamilton is such a great city. They cracked six huge beers - 107 Dortmunder Export Lager, Strange Animal IPA, Fine Line Orange Wine Lager, Happy Place Cab Franc Skin & Vine Saison, Nowhere Imperial Stout with Syrah, Malbec & Merlot, and By And By Belgian-Style Tripel with Pinot Noir, Gamay and Dornfelder. Almost 4 hours on this one - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

How has it been five and a half years since we've had Sawdust on the pod? Outrageous. Sam, Jimbo and Brenden of the legendary Muskoka brewery joined Cee and Nate to chat about what has been going on with them since the winter of 2018, the changes in their branding, how they've tweaked their recipes to create some of the finest beers in Ontario, their strong focus on crispies, why their retail space is so thoughtful, why opening a brewery right now might prove to be quite difficult, the resurgence of West Coast IPAs, and of course, they got into the weeds about our latest collab, Get It In Y'a! V2.0. They crushed Sägemehl Stadt Festbier, San Diego Dreamin' Dark Lager collab with Short Finger, Horchata White Milk Stout, Limberlost Pomme with West Avenue Cider, Wayback Playback West Coast IPA and Get It In Y'a! V2.0. Always a pleasure - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Link Up Series 6 is in the building! We're kicking off the latest collaboration series with a brewery that's super close to our hearts - Sawdust City! Co-Founder Sam Corbeil joins Cee and Tiff to chat about the importance of ties to the community in a region like Muskoka, why they offer such a wide variety of styles, their approach to "gateway beer" and how that offers access to many communities, how the younger generation is approaching beer, and the effects of pricing of beer. Sawdust delivered their Lemongrass Rice Lager with Sabro and Sorachi Ace hops, a bright, crisp, citrusy gem with awesome tropical vibes from the coconut that couldn't be more perfect for the patio. Plus there's a sneak peak of Sawdust and BAOS's newest collab beer, Get It In Y'a V2.0. Cheers! About the Link Up season: We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. We'll be focusing this entire season on Link Up, a non-profit started by the good folks behind Microbrasserie 5e Baron in Aylmer, QC and Tiffany and Cee here at BAOS and High Season Co. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it. There's almost nothing more important to the growth of the craft beer industry than gateway products and destinations, and that's where Beertown comes in. A craft beer bar and restaurant with 10 locations across western Ontario, Beertown has been encouraging folks to dive into craft beer for well over a decade, so Cee and Nate were stoked to chat with the Director of Beer & Beverage, Jennifer Tamse. The crew spoke about the value of a gateway destination for converting new craft beer fans, how people respond to different styles, the importance of their food, why they chose to keep locations in the suburbs, how they go over and above for their customers, and some of Jen's fave Ontario breweries. They ran through a selection of beers Jen curated - two classics and two collabs. Sawdust City's Lone Pine and Third Moon's Bone Tree as the flagships, and then their two collabs, Lone Tree and Bone Pine. Cheers! The pendulum is swinging in the world of IPAs, and it's slowly but surely headed in the direction from whence it came. Cee and Nate recently dropped an episode focusing on all things Fall beers, and they're back with a pod exclusively exploring their deepening love for the West Coast India Pale Ale. They picked four fantastic WC IPAs from Ontario and Quebec and discussed the origin of the West Coast IPA, how it evolved over the decades into what we know today, why the West Coast IPA is making a comeback, the difference between a fresh hop and a wet hop beer, and generally just gushed about the style. They cracked some incredible beers - Anderson Craft Ale's IPA, 5e Baron's Cypress, Sawdust City's Lone Pine, and 5e Baron's Sitka. Enjoy! Have you ever heard of a brewery with a barrel-aged sour as their flagship beer? Kitchener, ON's only sci-fi punk brewery, Short Finger Brewing, is definitely one of the most unique breweries in the province, let alone the country. Founder and Brewer Rob Hern joined Cee for a hilarious and fascinating conversation about their eclectic approach to beer, how they went from a home brew shop to a full-blown craft brewery, how their impeccable flagship BA sour Lando came about, their weird and wonderful space, their future goals for the brewery and their dope events. They crushed Lando (Batch T2), their collab with Sawdust City, Wax Poetic, their low ABV Pale Ale BabeeYoda, and Bigger Than Kiss coupage. This one was a riot, enjoy! Built in the late 19th century, the Oshkosh Grand Opera House has hosted many celebrities and other luminaries from Vaudeville, opera, and early theater. Later on, it was converted into a movie theater, but as the years went by, the building was falling into disrepair. A citizen committee formed and succeeded in getting it onto historic registers. The building and theater were restored to beautiful condition and are now utilized regularly for events and concerts. I'm sure the ghosts love it. Check into this podcast for a little ghostly history from the Sawdust City, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and their jewel called the Grand Opera House.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/ghostlyhaunts)

The Northern Pikes are one of the classic Canadian rock bands of the late '80s and 90s with iconic songs like “She Ain’t Pretty,” “Teenland,” “Things I Do for Money,” and “Girl with a Problem.” They’re back with a new LP, Forest of Love - their first new release in 16 years. Mike sat down with the full band, including newcomer Kevin Kane of Grapes of Wrath, to chat about songwriting, how making and releasing an album in 2019 compares to their past experiences, how age and maturity have altered their perspectives, and a lot more. Then, we catch up with the multi-talented (and ever-busy) Miranda Mulholland to chat about the Sawdust City Music Festival, running from August 2-4, 2019 in Gravenhurst, ON. Leading up to its third annual edition, Miranda discusses the realities of organizing and delivering a music festival in 2019 (a particularly timely subject), the event's growth in both size and ambition in the past three years, and more.
One hundred whole entire episodes. What started as a fun side project quickly turned into a serious passion for us, and 100 episodes later, here we are. We felt it was only right to celebrate our first century by bringing in key members of the team, our producer Tiffany Alexis and our audio engineer/photographer Notion, to chat about the history of BAOS and all of our favourite moments while drinking some of the finest beer we could get our hands on. Thanks for all the support, y'all! We're bringing you a trio of artist interviews in what could be our most diverse episode to date. Kristian Montano, frontman of Toronto roots rock outfit Sun K, joins us to talk about the band's upcoming album that, like its predecessor, was produced by Sum 41's Cone McCaslin. Hear about the unique musical relationship between Kristian and Cone, how the band's sound has evolved from Kristian's early solo material, and more. Melanie Brulee is a true musical chameleon, singing in both English and French and effortlessly flowing from cabaret to pop to Americana and much more. She tells us about whether certain songs lend themselves better to one language or the other, how her hybrid sound earns attention at music festivals - like the upcoming Sawdust City in Gravenhurst, ON - and more. Finally, Vivek Shraya and a multi-disciplinary virtuoso whose body of work includes several albums, films, and books. Her work is critically adored and has done much to empower and advance the cause of several marginalized groups. She tells Mike about some of her major successes, unique struggles, and more.
Sam Corbeil is the brewmaster at Sawdust City Brewing Company located in Gravenhurst, Ontario. This podcast was recorded the day after FunkFest at the brewery. Show Notes: REMOTE FROM GRAVENHURST! Sawdust City has their own studio (and podcast!), which gets them talking about a collaboration with Kingston's Stone City Ales. FunkFest is an annual event held on July 1 that celebrates Canada's sour beer. Aaron Spinney used to be a brewer at Sawdust City and has now opened Hamilton's MERIT Brewing Company. The collaboration between Sawdust, Block 3 and Stack is called Flotter Drier Pink Guava Berliner Weisse. Limberlost 2017 is a rhubarb and strawberry wild ale! Not only can you drink the Limberlost beer, but you can go to the forest and wildlife reserve! Escarpment Labs provides yeast to brewers and has been playing with isolating yeasts from the Ontario wilderness. FestaBrew is wort that you can buy from a homebrew shop. It is the easiest way to "brew" beer. Here's an interview with Sam back when he was a brewer at Mill Street in 2009. The Niagara College Teaching Brewery is creating some great brewing talent for Canada. Sam went to the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt fuer Brauerei in Berlin. Anyone else want to go to Brussels and start (re-start, continue) their beer journey? It really is incredible to see how many breweries are opening across Ontario!
