When I first learned about the field of occupational therapy, I had a very superficial understanding of what it entailed. In the school systems, it seemed like referrals often focused on fine-motor skills related to school, like pencil grip. When I learned about sensory processing, I discovered that it's so much more than that; and I realized how important it is for other members of both school and clinical teams to understand how each discipline can support each other. That's why I was so excited to talk with Maude Le Roux in episode 148 of the De Facto Leaders podcast.Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, SIPT, RCTC, DIR® Expert Trainer, is an international trainer on a wide variety of topics and also the director of her own online academy. She opened A Total Approach with her husband in September 2001. Maude is SIPT certified and specializes in Sensory Integration as it applies to functional activities of daily living, including improving the ability of any child to partake in their learning environment. Maude has presented workshops in multiple international locations, as well as in the US nationwide. She has developed the Developmental Pathways Model (DPM) in reaching clients with different profiles with a wide array of diagnoses. She is well known for her work in Sensory Processing, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Reading and Learning Disorders, as well as Attachment Disorders. She serves on the board for ATTACh, an international organization involved in attachment and trauma informed care. She is currently mobilizing an international group of Occupational Therapists to organize the influence of trauma informed care in the occupational therapy field. Maude has published two books; “The Listening Journey for Children”, and “Our Greatest Allies” is available through www.amazon.com. In this conversation, we discuss:✅How can we bridge the gap between what's “educationally relevant” and a child's developmental level?✅Collaboration between private therapists and school teams: Why do relationships turn adversarial, and what's possible when we form partnerships?✅Tips for helping parents understand the boundaries between “school recommendations” and “home recommendations.”✅Sensory integration, discrimination, and modulation: How our nervous system supports motor, cognitive, and language development✅Differential diagnosis: Is it a sensory issue, a behavior issue, or an attention issue? ✅Praxis, posture, and motor planning: How do these factors impact our ability to engage in goal-directed behavior during sitting, reading, writing, or other daily tasks? You can email Maude at maude@maudeleroux.com.You can learn more about Maude's clinic, “A Total Approach”, at: https://atotalapproach.com/Learn more about her professional training for clinicians at: https://www.maudeleroux.com/You can purchase her books here:Our Greatest Allies: https://www.amazon.com/Our-Greatest-Allies-Relationship-Intervention/dp/0988328836The Listening Journey for Children: https://www.amazon.com/Listening-Journey-Children-Francoise-Nicoloff/dp/0987053604 In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program for related service providers that helps them put programming in place that supports executive functioning. Facebook | Website | YouTube Channel | Spotify Sensory Enhanced Yoga Marika Paquin is an Occupational Therapist, Psychotherapist for the Sensory-Enhanced Yoga Institute. The Sensory-Enhanced Yoga Institute (SEYI) is a professional educational organization that trains yoga instructors, yoga therapists, licensed health professionals, and educators in the evidence informed practices of Sensory-Enhanced Yoga® and also directly serves traumatized and highly stressed populations (such as military veterans, emergency responders, victims of sexual trauma, victims of domestic violence, and students with special needs) through outreach efforts, program development and operation, and research. Sensory-Enhanced Yoga® applies techniques from sensory-based occupational therapy practices as well as recent findings from the fields of neurobiology and trauma psychology to address core symptoms of PTSD and related quality of life factors.  The program is especially informed by the highly successful treatment protocol used in the Iraq Yoga Study with deployed U.S. military personnel (Stoller et al, 2012), from which the program evolved, as well the specialized expertise of the SEYI faculty. Lynn Stoller, founding President of the Sensory-Enhanced Yoga® Institute, is both a certified yoga therapist and a registered occupational therapist certified in sensory integration (SIPT). Lynn co-developed the treatment protocol used in the Iraq Yoga Study and has continued to build on her original ideas and writings during the course of her work with veterans in her local community, her experiences as a former faculty member of Warriors at Ease, and her intensive studies through Joseph LePage's Integrative Yoga Therapy program. Several additional faculty members contribute enormously to the expertise of the program. Some discovered the great healing power of yoga and meditation during the course of their own personal journeys and struggles, and all have achieved a high level of specialized education and expertise in the subject. All are registered yoga teachers or certified yoga therapists, and most are also licensed professional health care providers. Two are very highly accomplished and decorated military veterans. We also have a certified special education teacher and occupational therapist who will co-lead the institute's S.M.Y.L.E.™ (Sensory and Mindfulness-based Yoga for Learning Environments) program. Please click here to read the bios of our highly talented faculty. Facebook | Website Marika Paquin Marika has been working as an occupational therapist with motor vehicle accident claimants since 1993, with a focus on clients with mild-to-moderate acquired brain injury, who have musculoskeletal, neurological, cognitive and/or psychosocial issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  She has been working with Canadian veterans since 2010, with a focus on physical disability, mental health and PTSD.  Marika has been using principals of yoga in treatment for many years. She initially trained as a Hatha Yoga teacher through Sivananda, and went on to do trainings focusing on using yoga in physical and mental health rehabilitation, such as Structural Yoga Therapy, Warriors at Ease, Yoga of the Heart, Veterans Yoga Project, and Mindful Resilience.  Marika consults about Mental Health Occupational Therapy and Sensory Enhanced Yoga® in the treatment of PTSD traumatized veterans and soldiers in Ukraine.  She is part of a group that has facilitated Occupational Therapy education in Ukraine. In this episode, we are delighted to speak with our guest on "Immigration with Tahmina" on Desi 1250am -Teresa L. Fair-Field! Teresa is a local Seattle entrepreneur and business woman, owner of OT Clubhouse. She recently applied for an H1b visa in the lottery on April 1st for an employee. When she agreed to the interview, she had no idea whether she would 'win' the H1b lottery. Originally USCIS announced they would start H1b adjudications on May 16th, so we wanted to ensure we had an interview that was as relevant as possible. Tune into listen to her story to learn what the H1b lottery means for her business. You can find out whether she 'won' or not. It was indeed brave of her to agree to this blindly! Teresa_Two With over 20 years in the field of occupational therapy and work in both large and small heath networks, Teresa began a private practice in pediatric therapy in 2011 with a mission to improve the family experience. Teresa’s commitment to child development began when her family became a consumer of pediatric services. Her OT background and parenting experience provides a unique “I’ve been there” perspective. She opened the OT Clubhouse in 2013, and has since joined with partners in speech therapy and psychology to form Sandbox Therapy Group a collaborative care model to improve communication and outcomes with a team approach. Teresa graduated from Pacific University (1993) in Forest Grove, Oregon, earning the Outstanding Graduate in Occupational Therapy award. She spent the majority of her career in neuro-rehabilitation, and enjoys understanding sensation and behavior from a nervous system perspective. She is certified in Ayres Sensory Integration® and is qualified to deliver the SIPT assessment. Teresa is currently working on a doctorate in occupational therapy (2016) with Chatham University in Pennsylvania. Her doctoral focus is to increase parent’s sense of efficacy in managing their child’s routines through a model of coaching and support.

Ordered Mesoporous Silica: Control of Morphology and Exploration with Single Molecules

This thesis is focused on the formation of highly ordered mesoporous structures with adjustable orientation within the ordered, vertical channels of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) under the conditions of the ‘evaporation-induced self-assembly’ (EISA) method. It is shown that three of the most often used structure directing agents (CTAB, Pluronic123 and Brij56) can be employed for the synthesis of ordered silica mesophases embedded in AAM-channels. When using the ionic surfactant CTAB, the hexagonal mesostructures were solely oriented along the AAM-channels (columnar orientation). With the non-ionic surfactants the occurrence of two different orientations (circular or columnar) can be tuned via changing the surfactant concentration and the humidity in the adjacent gas phase. The existence of a previously postulated circular lamellar phase could be proven. In situ scattering experiments show that when ionic CTAB was used as structure directing agent, the columnar hexagonal structure was observed to form directly from the beginning. In the samples synthesized with the non-ionic surfactants, the circular hexagonal structure was found to form first and to directly transform into the columnar hexagonal, or a mixture of the columnar hexagonal and the curved lamellar phase. By correlation of the structure formation with the weight loss during the drying process of the samples it was demonstrated that the structure formation starts after the solvent evaporation. Therefore the absence of an evaporation induced solvent gradient within the AAM channels is postulated, and a homogeneous nucleation and phase formation irrespective of the height within the AAM channels is proposed. The synthesis of pure columnar mesostructures in confined space was achieved by salt addition and temperature control, even when non-ionic surfactants were used, thus leading to salt-induced phase transformations (SIPT) that have not been previously reported. In a collaborative project, single dye molecules were used as nanoscale probes to map out the structure of mesoporous silica channel systems that are prepared as thin films. The dye molecules act as beacons while they diffuse through different structural phases of the host. While measurement of ensemble diffusion provides information about the overall behaviour of the guest in a porous host, tracking of individual molecules provides insight into both the heterogeneity and the mechanistic details of molecular diffusion as well as into the structure of the host. The structure of the trajectories, the diffusivities and the orientation of single molecules are distinctive for molecules travelling in different mesophases. Transitions between the different types of surroundings can be observed for the same individual dye molecule. These experiments reveal unprecedented details of the structure of the host, its domains and the accessibility as well as the connectivity of the channel system.
