In the 41st episode of the ECM podcast we're joined by Florian Weber, who's new recording "Imaginary Cycle" sees the pianist in the company of a major brass section plus a flute. Florian talks about the various inspirations that went into the cycle, including madrigals and Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble's "Officum" album. He talks about his conpirators in music, the process of developing this major musical project in collaboration with producer Manfred Eicher and about how in music, asking a question can be a lot more interesting than finding the answer.

He has been the principal percussionist in the Broadway productions of Guys and Dolls, Phil Collins' Tarzan, The Wiz, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Rocky, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, Gloria Estefan's On Your Feet!, and Once on This Island.Javier's studio credits include Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, Lin Manuel Miranda's In The Heights, ECM's Tituli (with the Hilliard Ensemble) by Stephen Hartke, two albums with David Sanborn, including Time and the River (produced by Marcus Miller), award-winning films such as Tango Flush and Jesus Camp, and many TV and radio commercials. As an Afro-Cuban/Pop percussion specialist, Javier has appeared with: Sean Kingston, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Patty La Belle, Lázaro Galarraga's Afro-Cuban All Stars, percussionists Angel Luís Figueroa, Cándido Camero, Román Díaz, Pedro Martínez, The Pan-American Jazz Band, The Ethnix, Anette Aguilar's Latin Jazz Group, Marta Topferova, Edmar Castañeda, Tribal Sage World Music duo project with multi-percussionist Roger Squitero, World Percussion group Kalunga, and the New York World Music Institute. Concluimos la serie de tres capítulos titulada "Antecedentes de la música drone", en la que estamos presentando algunas manifestaciones musicales que podrían haber influido en la aparición de una práctica compositiva que se caracteriza por la presencia de sonidos estáticos, mantenidos durante largos periodos de tiempo, que, en su caso, evolucionan muy lentamente. A menudo, esos sonidos ocupan el registro más grave y, sobre ese bordón o nota pedal (expresión que nos permitiría referirnos a esta práctica como "música pedal", prescindiendo de anglicismos), los parciales superiores que completan su espectro armónico van presentando diferentes variaciones tímbricas, texturales, rítmicas, etc. En el anterior episodio de este ciclo escuchamos diferentes músicas tradicionales procedentes de los Estados Unidos, y retomando esa línea comenzamos este programa con Henry Flynt, filósofo, músico y activista vinculado al arte conceptual, que se dio a conocer en la escena vanguardista de la ciudad de Nueva York a través de una serie de conciertos en el “loft” de Yoko Ono a partir de 1961. Dentro de ese contexto colaboró con músicos como Tony Conrad y La Monte Young (cuya pieza “For Brass” también presentamos), participó como violinista en The Velvet Underground, y formó parte de las actividades de los artistas Fluxus. Dentro de la ingente producción compositiva de Flynt destaca lo que él mismo denominó "Avant-Garde Hillbilly and Blues Music" (de la cual su pieza "Leather High In E", que escuchamos, es una excelente muestra). Ésta se planteaba como una crítica al dogma que defiende la superioridad cultural de la tradición musical clásica procedente de Europa. Tras las exploraciones de las dos últimas semanas dedicadas, respectivamente, al folclore procedente de la India y al de las tradiciones propias de los Estados Unidos, en esta ocasión enfocamos nuestra atención hacia esa tradición musical clásica procedente de Europa frente a la cual se posicionaba Henry Flynt. Escuchamos fragmentos del "Preludio del Oro del Rin" de Wagner; del tercer movimiento ("Herr lehre doch mich") del "Réquiem alemán" de Brahms; de la tercera de las "Cinco piezas para orquesta" de Webern; del "Trío para cuerdas" de Scelsi, de las "Danzas folclóricas rumanas para orquesta de cuerda" de Bartók, y de la banda sonora de la película "Ben-Hur" de Rózsa. La última audición mencionada abre un campo, el de las recreaciones musicales propias de un pasado ficticio, en el que también puede inscribirse una peculiar versión de la pieza gregoriana "Protexisti me Deus", que también presentamos antes de una última sección en la que escuchamos fragmentos del “Kyrie” de la “Misa flamenca” de Enrique Morente, así como del "Sederunt principes" del Magister Perotinus Magnus, primero en la interpretación vocal del Hilliard Ensemble, y después en una adaptación para dobro (o guitarra resofónica) realizada por Noël Akchoté. Pero Pieranunzi terminó por aceptar y nació así un nuevo trío para dar vida a sus "New visions". Si de Italia y maestros hablamos, cómo obviar al trompetista Enrico Rava. Si hablamos de maestros estadounidenses, cómo obviar al saxofonista Joe Lovano. "Roma" recoge una actuación de ambos en compañía del pianista Giovanni Guidi, el baterista Gerald Cleaver y el contrabajista Dezron Douglas. No es un instrumento común en el ámbito del jazz, por eso llama la atención la música de "Dreamlife of Debris", disco del organista y pianista británico Kit Downes. El órgano se integra con la improvisación en un trabajo en el que colaboran, entre otros, la chelista Lucy Railton y el baterista Sebastian Rochford. Todo tiene un final en la vida, también lo tuvo la fascinante integración del saxofonista noruego Jan Garbarek en el cuerpo vocal generado por los cuatro miembros del Hilliard Ensemble, el cuarteto vocal británico con quien 25 años atrás Garbarek presentó un disco histórico: "Officium". Su despedida en 2014, ahora recogida en "Remember me, my dear". El intérprete de tuba, Joseph Daley, puso música a los siete pecados capitales en "The seven deadly sins". Libby Purves meets gem hunter Guy Clutterbuck; artist Andrew Logan; campaigner Diana Nammi and counter-tenor David James. Guy Clutterbuck is a gem hunter and dealer whose expeditions have led him to countries including Zambia, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka where he buys rough and cut gemstones. During these trips he sources rare gems such as emeralds, rubies, sapphires and aquamarines from local mines. He has donated a 60 carat Mozambican aquamarine - worth £40,000 - to a raffle by Fine Cell Work, a charity which helps prisoners rebuild their lives. Andrew Logan is a sculptor, artist, jewellery designer and the founder of the Alternative Miss World contest. Established in 1972, the Alternative Miss World celebrates the outrageous and the unique. Notable contestants have included Leigh Bowery and Grayson Perry and previous winners include the late Derek Jarman as Miss Crepe Suzette. Andrew Logan's art can be found in public and private collections such as London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. This year's Alternative Miss World takes place at Shakespeare's Globe. Diana Nammi is chief executive of the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation (IKWRO) which she set up in 2002. She has been instrumental in the campaign to bring honour killers to justice as well as striving to get forced marriages banned in this country. She has just won a Barclays Women of the Year award for her campaigning work on behalf of women from Middle Eastern and North African communities who have been affected by honour based violence and forced marriage. David James is a founder member of the renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Known for its combinations of sacred and medieval music, the group is celebrating its 40th anniversary and performing a series of final concerts. The ensemble's most famous collaboration has been with Norwegian jazz saxophonist, Jan Garbarek, who is taking part in the farewell tour. The Hilliard Ensemble's last performance is at London's Wigmore Hall in December. Producer: Paula McGinley.
Lucie Skeaping talks to members of the Hilliard Ensemble as they celebrate their 40th anniversary, and plays a selection of their many recordings. The Hilliard Ensemble established a reputation as an early music ensemble with a series of successful recordings in the 1980s, but it was when they began also to focus on new music that the world began to sit up and take notice. The 1988 recording of Arvo Pärt's "Passio" began a fruitful relationship with the Estonian composer, and the group has recently commissioned other composers from the Baltic States, including Veljo Tormis and Erkki-Sven Tüür, adding to a rich repertoire of new music from Gavin Bryars, Heinz Holliger, John Casken, James MacMillan, Elena Firsova and many others. The Hilliard Ensemble's popularity crossed musical boundaries when their collaboration with the Norwegian Saxophonist Jan Garbareck sent their ECM recording "Officium" soaring up both classical and pop charts in several countries. Equally at home with Perotin, Palestrina and Pärt, the four members of the Hilliard Ensemble describe some of the many musical experiences they have had in concert halls and recording studios around the world, and select some of their favourite tracks from their extensive CD catalogue.

At the Hermitage in St Petersburg hangs one of Caravaggio's most famous paintings: the Lute Player. An androgynous young man looks out at us as he plucks the strings of this most iconic of Renaissance instruments, and a music book lies in front of him. Close inspection reveals that not only has Caravaggio carefully painted a real piece of lute music, but we can even identify its composer - Jacques Arcadelt. Today Lucie Skeaping explores the life of Jacques Arcadelt, one of the most mysterious, fascinating, and significant figures in 16th century music. Many biographical details of his life are sketchy; but from being born in what we now know as Belgium, in the first decade of the 16th century, Arcadelt found his way to Italy where he became a driving force in the rise and popularity of the madrigal. Arcadelt's several books of madrigals were among the most prolifically-published books of the entire Renaissance - the soundtrack to a film about the period's many great artists would unquestionably need to feature a great deal of music by him. Michelangelo's paintings were barely dry when Arcadelt began singing in the Sistine Chapel, and there's every suggestion that being at the heart of the Renaissance must have been a vital source of his creative inspiration. All of Arcadelt's music is vocal, and covers a vast range of styles, from light songs to entire Masses, and also a setting of the epic Lamentations of Jeremiah. In this programme Lucie focuses on madrigals performed by the Hilliard Ensemble, the Orlando Consort, the Fires of Love; and religious music performed by the Josquin Capella from a disc released just last year. Lucie also reflects on an intriguing aspect of Arcadelt's work, namely that although he wrote no instrumental music, other composers of the period were all too ready to adapt it for instrumental performance. The picture of Arcadelt that emerges is of a musician whose senses of enterprise and adventure led to a stellar career as composer and performer, reflected both in his service of distinguished patrons including the Medici family and the Vatican, and also in the huge popular esteem in which he was so obviously held.
