He is also highly interested in the music of the last sixty years, his preferences are going from György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis or Esa-Pekka Salonen to Einar Englund, Aulis Sallinen, Emil Tabakov, Kalevi Aho, Vagn Holmboe, John Adams, Sir Malcolm Arnold or Sir Andrzej Panufnik. Hoy en Carrusel de las artes, les comentamos sobre el “telón de hierro” que se ha cernido sobre la cultura y los artistas rusos tras la invasión de Rusia a territorio ucranio. Fuimos al Museo de Artes decorativas, museo que expone por primera vez en suelo francés el manuscrito de El Principito. Les hablaremos de dos películas entre los estrenos del cine francés, y escucharemos al pianista francés Sofiane Pamart, uno de los artistas del concierto por la paz en Ucrania que tuvo lugar en París. La invasión rusa a Ucrania ha provocado el estupor internacional pero también un terremoto en el mundo cultural. Numerosas instituciones artísticas han decidido realizar un boicot a los artistas rusos. Uno de los primeros sobre quien se abatió el telón de hierro fue el afamado director de orquesta ruso Valéry Gergiev, estrecho amigo de Vladimir Putin. A los pocos días de comenzada la invasión de ucrania, la Orquesta Filarmónica de Múnich y el Festival de Verbier, en Suiza, decidieron despedir al director ruso. Algo similar sucedió con la súper estrella del arte lirico, la soprano rusa Anna Netrebtko, quien fue declarada persona non grata. Instituciones prestigiosas financiadas por el Kremlin como el ballet Bolshoi o el Mariinsky han visto anuladas sus presentaciones en Occidente. Otras figuras rusas han decidido tomar distancia del régimen ruso e incluso pedir sin ambages el cese de una guerra considerada como una “vergüenza” y un “desastre”. Sobre estas numerosas anulaciones, retiros y peticiones contra el arte y los artistas rusos conversamos con Carlos Huffmann, director del Departamento de Arte de la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Al encuentro de ‘El Principito' Por primera vez en la historia, el manuscrito de "El Principito" se encuentra en Francia. La obra cumbre de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry hizo un largo viaje desde Estados Unidos para ser expuesta en todo su esplendor ante los ojos del público francés. Este cuento filosófico conocido en el mundo entero fue escrito durante la segunda guerra mundial, cuando el aviador y escritor francés se encontraba exiliado en Nueva York. “Resulta increíble imaginar que este monumento de la literatura francesa que es El principito haya sido escrito en Nueva York y que hoy se conserva en esa ciudad. Tenemos mucha suerte que la Morgan Library nos lo haya prestado para mostrarlo por primera vez a un público europeo”, declaró a RFI la conservadora del Museo de las Artes Decorativas, Anne Monier Vanryb. En efecto, en 1943, antes de partir la guerra, Saint-Exupéry regaló el manuscrito de El Principito a su amiga Silvia Hamilton, quien lo vendió a la Morgan Library más de 20 años después. El manuscrito nunca había salido del territorio estadounidense hasta ahora. Este documento invaluable es la pieza central de la exposición parisina, muestra que se compone de otros 600 documentos, cartas, dibujos, cuadernos de viaje y elementos audiovisuales que exhiben al público bajo un techo lleno de estrellas, lo que recuerda el universo fantástico del relato. La exposición explica los elementos autobiográficos que se rescatan en el cuento, como la relación complicada entre el autor y su esposa Consuelo. Le exposición se termina en una sala donde se exponen ejemplares del cuento en diversas lenguas o dialectos indígenas, como el guaraní o el toba. Como se explica este éxito planetario. La exposición “Al encuentro de El Principito” podrá verse hasta finales de junio en el Museo de las Artes Decorativas de París. Estrenos de cine francés Llega a las salas “Petite nature”, un drama social que relata la historia de Johnny, un niño precoz de 10 años, que vive que con madre soltera y sus dos hermanos en un barrio de bajos recursos. Su profesor de escuela lo toma bajo su ala al darse cuenta del potencial, la sensibilidad y gran madurez de Johnny. Pero el interés de su profesor es interpretado por el niño de otra forma, suscitando en él un choque emocional. Una película el despertar sensual en la infancia, abordado aquí con una gran delicadeza. También en las salas francesas esta semana “Goliat”, un drama sobre la utilización masiva de los pesticidas en la agricultura. “Goliath” es una película coral con tres personajes principales, una militante contra los productos químicos en la agricultura, un abogado especialista del derecho agrícola, y un ambicioso defensor de los fabricantes de pesticidas. Un trio cuyos destinos se entrecruzan cuando se descubren las dramáticas repercusiones de los pesticidas en la salud de los agricultores. Música por la paz Terminamos este Carrusel de las artes ofreciéndoles un poco de lo que fue el concierto por la paz en Ucrania que tuvo lugar en la Casa de la Radio de París, en asociación con la Cruz Roja Francesa. Una velada en la que se sucedieron cantantes y artistas franceses para decir no a la guerra. Los dejamos con el pianista francés Sofiane Pamart y este tema “Love”, esperando que su música pueda calmar a quienes hoy sufren por la guerra en Ucrania.

Se em tempos de paz a cultura atua muitas vezes como moeda diplomática, o famoso soft power, em tempos de guerra seu papel assume tons mais sombrios, como mostram as ações movidas pelos atores culturais na França, após a invasão da Ucrânia. Se a guerra atualmente é híbrida, não há combatentes melhores que os artistas, experts em construir narrativas e convocar emoções. Da Bienal de Veneza ao Carnegie Hall, passando pela Filarmônica de Paris, o mundo ocidental manda seu recado à Rússia. Na França, da Ópera Nacional de Paris ao Festival de Avignon, muitas instituições culturais expressaram seu apoio "ao povo e aos artistas ucranianos" nos últimos dias. Mas artistas ucranianos que vivem na França também estão se mobilizando. É o caso, por exemplo, do famoso Quarteto Elysée, que inclui o violinista ucraniano Andrei Malakhov. Com seu grupo, ele decidiu gravar uma peça do repertório de um jovem compositor ucraniano, conforme contou em entrevista à RFI: "A iniciativa seria gravar um quarteto de cordas composto por o compositor e violonista ucraniano, Ilia Bondarenko, que tem 20 anos e está atualmente sob os bombardeios em Kiev", diz. "Todo dia de manhã eu telefono ou escrevo para todo mundo, começo por Kiev, depois Karkhiv e na sequência Odessa, para ficar por dentro de onde eles estão, e sobretudo como passaram a noite, que é o período mais angustiante", relata o diretor. "Tento trocar informações, porque existem muitas fake news circulando, então tento saber ao certo como as coisas estão acontecendo na realidade, se eles têm o que comer, se têm eletricidade, água, aquecimento", diz Minaiev. "Há alguns ucranianos que descem para dormir nos abrigos anti-bombardeios, sobretudo em Kiev. Outros que dizem que não descem mais, dormem no corredor, no banheiro", conta o cineasta. "Também repasso informações que temos aqui no Ocidente. Para eles é um incentivo saber que praticamente todos os veículos de imprensa na França falam deles o tempo todo e que não estão abandonados. Não poderíamos imaginar essa ajuda da Europa e do resto do mundo. Passamos por tantas coisas, e agora, todo mundo está conosco", vibra. Lucie Berelowitsch, diretora do Centro Nacional de Teatro da Normandia, falou sobre o desejo de ajudar os artistas na Ucrânia. "Uma parte dos artistas ucranianos ficou no país e se mobiliza de todas as maneiras possíveis, tomando a palavra e organizando redes de ajuda entre eles. Hoje em dia a questão não é saber que hospitalidade poderemos lhes oferecer, mas como ajudá-los na Ucrânia", sublinha a diretora. "Estamos criando redes de solidariedade com a Polônia e a Romênia para que possamos ajudar de maneira rápida no acolhimento dos artistas. Eles dizem que sentem uma mobilização muito grande por parte da Europa e que isso é muito importante para eles. Eles dizem sentir a necessidade de lutar para continuarem livres, simplesmente", afirma Berelowitsch. Cancelamento Mas não só de solidariedade que a guerra cultural é feita. Na França, o nome Valery Gergiev é o emblema de uma verdadeira ruptura cultural. Despite efforts to keep the content of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics under tight wraps, a few details have emerged about the musical lineup planned for Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia on Friday. Several Russian performers have been linked to the ceremony, including conductor Valery Gergiev, violist Yuri Bashmet, and Mariinsky Theater ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina. They'll join a parade of athletes and other pageantry to create what is reportedly the most expensive opening ceremony in Olympics history. To help explore the cultural significance of the Sochi games, host Naomi Lewin speaks with Simon Morrison, a professor of music history at Princeton University who specializes in Russian music and dance. He’s currently writing a book on the history of the Bolshoi Ballet.   What is conductor Valery Gergiev’s role and why was he chosen to participate? President Vladimir Putin named Gergiev as an official ambassador of the Sochi Olympics "because he is really the leading cultural export of Russia," said Morrison. Gergiev has a well-publicized friendship with Putin, and "can basically pick up the phone and get a hold of the president." This has made Gergiev a lightning rod. In recent months, his concerts in the West have been targeted by protesters against Russia's law that criminalizes the dissemination of "gay propaganda" to minors. "Naturally, given his jet-setting, his prominence and his panache, he's an emblem of Russia today," added Morrison.   Along with the celebrity performers, there are plans for a 1,000-voice children’s choir. What do we know about this? Gergiev has been making the rounds with a newly-formed, national children's chorus. Morrison believes it’s an effort to project an inclusive, diverse image for the country. "I think they’ll sing some big hymn," he said. “I don’t think it will be a nationalist hymn like ‘Slava’ from [Glinka’s] A Life for the Tsar since that’s a hymn that deals with Russia suppressing Poland and that wouldn’t be very international and cosmopolitan.” The chorus is reminiscent of the "Friendship of the Peoples," an old Soviet mantra referring to cooperation among Russia's ethnic and social groups. "Plus, a thousand children really suggests they want to rival with Beijing,” Morrison adds, referring to the grand spectacle of the 2008 Beijing Olympics ceremonies. Below is a video of the enormous Russian choir performing last month at the Mariinsky Theater: What other types of music can we expect? This has been a closely-guarded secret, but the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow may provide a few clues to current thinking. Expect Tchaikovsky ballet music, perhaps some Rimsky-Korsakov and grand choral numbers. “For choral music, maybe something that reaches back to the Catherine the Great era since, in many respects, this current regime would like to see itself – and the public would like to see it – as a sort of more benign imperialism,” said Morrison. "So I think the opening ceremonies will be a reinforcement of that.”   Any surprises in the works? "One of the things that’s rumored – and if this happens, it will be truly sensational and a real stick in the eye to the West – is that there is this pop duo named t.a.T.u.,” said Morrison. The duo consists of two young women whose stage show involves Lesbian schoolgirl imagery. “That’s part of their shtick. They were notorious as well as popular with the younger set." If that happens, argues Morrison, it will be a subversion of Western protests against the anti-gay law. Last week, several Russian news outlets reported that the duo Tweeted about their involvement in the ceremony (the alleged Tweet was later deleted and doubts persist about the post's truthfulness). The soprano Anna Netrebko will sing the Olympic Anthem in the Opening Ceremony and has also been rumored to sing in the closing ceremony. There have been suggestions that Sergei Filin, artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet who was the victim of an acid attack last January, will have a role. “So I’m sure we will see the elite cultural representatives,” Morrison said. A spokesman for pianist Denis Matsuev told WQXR that he will be performing not in the opening ceremonies, as has been reported, but in the closing events.   Any bets on a grand musical finale? Says Morrison: “My money is on Swan Lake.”   The opening ceremony to the Sochi Olympics will be televised on NBC this Friday starting at 7:30 ET. (Updated 2/7.)

Gergiev also runs festivals in Russia, Holland, Israel and around the Baltic, and was recently charged with re-launching the historic Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and St Petersburg. Undoubtedly one of the busiest musicians on the planet, Gergiev has been criticised for skimping on rehearsal and detail; he has also been accused of having too intimate a relationship with Russian power. In this extended and wide-ranging interview recorded at Gergiev's Festival in Mikkeli, Finland, Gergiev tells Norman about his childhood in Ossetia and his reaction to the death of his father when he was just 14; his own very special method of fund-raising; his controversial relationship with Vladimir Putin; and just what drives him to live life at his famously frenetic pace. For the label’s fifth opera, Gergiev conducts Donizetti’s masterpiece with a magnificent cast led by Natalie Dessay. Donizetti’s tragic opera in three acts depicts a family feud set in the Lammermuir hills of Scotland. The opera was premiered on 26 September 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, with the coloratura soprano Fanny Tacchinardi Persiani, and a revised version in French followed suit in 1839. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the central character of Lucia Ashton (Dessay) is in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, her brother Enrico’s sworn enemy. With his fortune waning, Lord Enrico plots to force Lucia to marry Lord Arturo Bucklaw, in order to guarantee his continued power. Torn between her family and true love, Lucia submits to her brother’s desires but in turn loses her mind. Lucia’s delicate disposition is tested and results in the famous ‘mad scene’ where Lucia kills her new bridegroom Arturo. Natalie Dessay is one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos and an admired interpreter of lyric heroines. She is particularly renowned for her interpretation of the role of Lucia, which she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and the Mariinsky Theatre. Future engagements include Verdi’s La Traviata with the LSO at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July and at the Wiener Staatsoper in October. Piotr Beczala is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of today’s leading lyric tenors. He has recently sung Edgardo with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and on tour in Japan, and this summer will perform at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Salzburg Festival. Valery Gergiev recently won the Disc of the Year Award from BBC Music Magazine for his LSO Live recording of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. In July, Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Ballet at New York Metropolitan Opera and in August he conducts at the Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms with the Mariinsky Orchestra before opening the LSO’s 2011-12 concert season. In October he embarks on a major tour of the USA and Canada with the Mariinsky Orchestra, including residencies at Carnegie Hall and Berkeley. Forthcoming releases include the final instalment in his Mahler cycle on LSO Live featuring Symphony No 9 and the Mariinsky label’s first DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs.
