The looming threat of a US recession

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, September 6, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started. Indian equity markets fell for a second consecutive day on Thursday. The benchmark Nifty index was down 0.21 percent, while Sensex dropped 0.18 percent. Concerns are growing over the possibility of a US recession, with rising unemployment rates and inflation serving as key indicators. However, as N. Madhavan points out, the US GDP growth remains strong despite these warning signs. Some economists suggest a potential soft landing, where inflation is controlled without leading to a full-blown recession. In his primer, Madhavan explores these scenarios and their potential impact on India. The market has seen a frenzy of SME IPOs, with many getting oversubscribed by over a thousand times, despite warnings from regulators about potential malpractices. Some of these could soon become penny stocks. Aprajita Sharma highlights the warning signs investors should be mindful of, noting that SME stocks, with their relatively low market cap, are more susceptible to manipulation. In her story, she emphasizes the importance of thorough research to avoid falling victim to promoters looking to offload their holdings at inflated prices.Change is indeed afoot in Bollywood, with actors becoming more selective about projects they take on. Many are opting out of films that may not resonate with today's post-pandemic audience, industry insiders told Lata Jha. Biopics and dramas, once staples of the big screen, are now increasingly seen as better suited for streaming platforms. A notable example is Ayushmann Khurrana stepping away from a Sourav Ganguly biopic. So, what's driving this shift? While the rise of the OTT industry plays a major role, the evolving dynamics of the film industry run deeper. Audiences have raised their expectations, and stars are adjusting by being more cautious about their choices. This year is proving highly lucrative for lawyers as India's top law firms engage in an intense competition for talent. With retention and discretionary bonuses, faster paths to partnership, and larger salary hikes on offer, firms are pulling out all the stops to retain their best employees. Leading law firms are even bringing in consultants to overhaul their compensation structures. Neha Joshi and Devina Sengupta spoke to insiders who revealed that firms are incentivizing talent primarily through two strategies: offering a quicker path to partnership and enhancing performance-linked incentives. Law firms typically have two types of partners—equity partners, who generate business and receive a share of the firm's revenue, and non-equity partners, who are paid a fixed salary with bonuses. The latter group is now the main focus of these efforts.Diageo, the world's largest spirits company, plans to invest $100 million in the Indian market over the next three years, aiming to expand its portfolio of premium spirits. Over the past decade, Diageo has already poured around $3.5 billion into India, focusing on expansion, acquisitions, and investments in cricket properties such as the Indian Premier League. Varuni Khosla and Suneera Tandon report that the company now plans to introduce "craft spirits" for both domestic and international markets, seeking to further boost its dominant market share. Show notes:Mint Primer: The chances of a US recession and its impact on IndiaSME IPO frenzy: The red flags that investors shouldn't ignoreTalent War in Legal Sector: Firms Boost Pay and Partnership OpportunitiesBollywood sees flight to safety as moviegoers raise the barDiageo to invest $100 mn to craft new products in India, says top boss

India white-washed Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20I series under the watchful eyes of Gautam Gambhir. One of the most prominent features in the series was that batters chipped in with the ball when necessary. Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh rolled their arms in a crunch situation and helped India win the final match of the series. This was reminiscent of the pre-2011 era of Indian cricket, where the team had able part-timers in Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh, among others, who had the ability to hold their nerve when handed the ball. While it is too early to tell if this could be a regular thing, it is surely a welcome change for the Indian team, who have struggled with their combinations in white-ball cricket with their top order not contributing with the ball.  In this episode of the Sledging Room, Akshay Ramesh, Saurabh Kumar, and Kingshuk Kusari discuss the point of the Sri Lanka T20I series and what they learned from Gambhir's first stint as the India head coach. Tune in! Produced by Anna Priyadarshini

Shining a light on the 2004 General election campaign with Prathap Suthan and Jayshree Sundar

In 2004, the Indian men's cricket team toured Pakistan after 15 years. It was a momentous tour, and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is said to have told Sourav Ganguly not just to win games but also win hearts. The Indian team did both. They won the test and ODI series. On their return home, some of them had to be ushered out of the airport secretly because of the teeming crowds outside. Sport and politics are closely related in the subcontinent. That tour was conducted to create a feel-good factor of sorts before the general elections. A few months before, the BJP had won state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh and was on a high. Prime Minister Vajpayee was the only one skeptical of the 'feel-good factor'. "Jaswant Singh looked at me and said 'there goes your campaign'." Prathap Suthan, then the National Creative Director of Grey advertising, led the campaign. He says the 'India Shining' campaign was designed for urban India and people with money to spend. It wasn't a campaign for the masses. He narrates an interesting cricket match-related incident: India was playing Australia in an ODI series, and Sehwag was going hammer and tongs. The camera turned to a person in the crowd. And what was he holding? An India Shining ad written by him. In the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar said (paraphrasing) India is shining, alluding to the campaign slogan. It felt as if everyone in the country was caught up in the fervor. With wins in three states in the assembly elections, the party made an error. Then Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani wanted the India Shining campaign to become the election campaign. This was the beginning of the end. Jaswant Singh, then the external affairs minister, looked at Prathap and said 'there goes your campaign' because he knew it wasn't created for the masses. "It became a Frankenstein no one could control." It's hard to control a juggernaut, even if it is heading in the wrong direction. When the Deputy Prime Minister issues an order, it's hard to say no, and the India Shining campaign became the election campaign - something it wasn't intended for. Then came the Aam Aadmi campaign created by Jayshree's team at Leo Burnett which sucked the wind out of the India Shining campaign. "People were blaming me for the loss." The BJP made tactical blunders ahead of the polls, beginning with preponing them by six months. The decision to go with a campaign not created for the masses was another blunder. But it's easy to blame the person who created the campaign instead of those in power, and Prathap was at the receiving end of this. "We believed in the campaigns when working on them. Both Jayshree and Prathap said they believed in the campaigns fully when working on them. Both of them have been at the receiving end of trolls, and Prathap said he also received threats when working on the campaign. When I asked them if it is important to believe in a political party's ideology before working for them, both said it's important to see it professionally and not get emotionally caught up. Jayshree says even if the BJP had called her, she would have worked on the campaign with a full heart. Today, Prathap no longer works on political campaigns as he finds it too murky. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pawan85/message

Welcome to Episode 120 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. On the podcast today joining me is Nikhil Samant. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession, running his business in Pune. Like all Indians, he is a huge fan of the game of cricket. His passion and need to be associated with the game culminated in his writing of the book, ‘It Wasn't A Waste of Time - The Story of the Most Important Decade' in Indian Cricket'. This book is his tribute to Indian Cricket and all the players who have had the privilege to wear the Indian cap. The book encapsulates four great men - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Anil Kumble - led by the enigmatic Sourav Ganguly, accept the challenge to repair the tarnished image of Indian cricket. Will India's new captain bring back the charm and respect to India's first love? Who will take up Ganguly's mantle?” Basically, it is the story of an emotional journey Indian fans underwent in the first decade of the new millennium. It outlines the most important events, matches and series India participated in, and their impact on Indian cricket itself. The book beautifully outlines the important events that India had participated in at that time to regain its charm back. It has glimpses of ICC Champions Trophy 2000, India's tour of England and New Zealand in 2002, ICC World Cup 2003, ICC World Cup 2007 and others, presented as a 'long story short'. Although this book is non-fiction, relying heavily on true facts and statistics, interviews and reports, it still has an element of storytelling and a beautiful coherence that fascinated me. The book is surely recommended to all Cricket lovers and those who love to read about the sport. The author is articulate and the language used is subtle, well-drafted and rich. It depicts how the legends of Indian Cricket opened all the doors of love that were almost shut upon them. The comprehensive interview is a candid and free flowing discussion with Nikhil that has us covering a plethora of topics and you wouldn't want to miss out on this one! The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Overcast and a lot of other platforms and spread the word. Remember the time when Indian men's cricket was having a glorious moment? A miraculous series win in Australia, winning series across all three formats against England at home, reaching the World Test Championship final, winning (technically) a series in England...how long ago was that? What? Just this year? Hard to believe, when it seems like at the moment it's just going from crisis to crisis. Well, one prolonged crisis over the captaincy, with a tangentially related crisis, the crash and burn at the T20 World Cup, thrown in for good measure. Because since September, the men's team captaincy has become a huge source of controversy, with two icons of Indian cricket taking center stage: Sourav Ganguly, a former captain himself and current BCCI president, and Virat Kohli, current captain – of, now, only the Test team, as opposed to three months ago, when he was skipper across all formats. And that change in the state of affairs has led to Indian cricket becoming more of a rumor-based drama than Gossip Girl (or so we think, given that we haven't actually watched the show and we're just guessing what it was about based on the title). Sid and Aditya break down the colossal clusterfuck that has erupted thanks to the BCCI forgetting a basic skill – communication! – in our latest episode. Greg Chappell is one of the most accomplished Cricketers Australia has ever produced. While he was a run machine, he batted with a touch of elegance and grace that few have seen before or since. The second of three brothers to play for Australia, Greg made 7 110 runs in 87 test matches at the superb average of 53.86 to go with his 24 test centuries, and also averaged over 40 in one day Cricket for good measure as well. He was the first player to manage the feat of scoring a century in both his first and last test matches, and as captain, he won 21 of his 48 Tests and lost only 13.He was equally productive in the breakaway World Series Cricket years, averaging 54 in 14 Supertests that saw some of the fiercest Cricket that Greg had encountered. In 1973, Greg was named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year and in 2000 he was named in the Australian Test Team of the Century. Greg was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2002.After retiring in 1984, Greg has since fulfilled a number of roles, including as a national selector over two stints, the national talent manager for Cricket Australia, and a television and radio commentator. In terms of coaching, he coached the South Australian Redbacks from 1998 for five seasons, before taking on the role of Indian coach from 2005 to 2007 in what was a tumultuous period in working alongside combative former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly. He is a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to cricket, and just this year was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to cricket as a leading player, captain, coach and administrator at the elite level, and for his contribution to a range of charitable organisations. He has also recently released a book, titled ‘Greg Chappell: Not Out', where he dissects Australian Cricket and his career from all angles, including mental skills and the future of the game in this country. And adding fuel to fire, Kohli further clarified that he was informed about his dismissal as ODI captain by the selection committee only 90 minutes prior to the selection meeting for the Test squad on 8 December.  And that contrary to rumours and media reports, he was and still is available for the ODI leg of the tour and never communicated with the BCCI asking for a rest. At the end of the press conference, it was his word against the BCCI president and Kohli was clearly unhappy and ready to take a stand. While Kohli said that he accepts the BCCI's decision, the practice of unceremoniously dismissing Indian cricket captains is not alien, with many like Ganguly and Tendulkar being at the receiving end. So what does the poor handling of dismissing captains speak of the BCCI? And will this off-field drama right before a crucial Test series affect the mood in the dressing room? The man who defined captaincy and leadership to me. Even today, I try to find attributes of Dada in every captain on the cricket field. He led the Indian side by setting an example with the bat under different circumstances. Though he didn't win the world cup, he prepared a team which went on to win it. I have shared my stories around him and how he inspired me not just on the field but off the field as well. I hope you will enjoy the episode. Do share your feedback after listening the episode.
