Part 3 of 3. The initial investigation into the slayings of 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson was meticulous, with no stones left unturned, but it resulted in virtually no breaks. Though DNA obtained as the result of the attacker raping Cheryl produced a strong profile, no one Detective Billy Belk and company could find was a match. Then, almost 20 years later, the biggest break in the case occurred when the DNA got a hit in CODIS. But there was a problem – the matched DNA also belonged to an unknown assailant. Underlying this story is another one: the story of advancements in DNA technology. Will new technology, i.e. forensic genealogy, finally give this story an ending? When 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson met in August of 1990, it was almost as if fate made it so. Both of them had just moved back to Houston, Texas earlier that summer. But fate turned cruel when only weeks later something terrible, something beyond reason and comprehension happened to the couple cutting not only their romance short, but also their lives. Episode 4 The Alabama Axe MurderessJoin Erica Kelley from Southern Fried True Crime as she takes a look at a case she finds beyond bizarre – the June 1959 torso murders in Northeast Alabama. That month, two male human torsos were found in Etowah and St. Clair counties. The arms and legs belonging to these torsos were found scattered in Calhoun County. The victims remained unidentified for weeks, and they turned out to be the Harper brothers. They lived in a trailer on a farm in Calhoun County – a farm owned by the family of Viola Hyatt, who eventually confessed to the gruesome murders and dismemberment. But, even after all these years, questions remain. In this week's episode, Bob chats with Erica Kelley, creator and host of Southern Fried True Crime. Born and raised in Tennessee, Erica uses her southern charm to highlight historical and contemporary cases in the deep south. Bob and Erica discuss their mutual experiences working with editor Mike Bussing, what life is like in Tennessee, and the challenges of receiving medical care during COVID-19. After, they take a deep dive into the murder of Belinda Temple in Harris County, TX. In 1999, at 30 years old and 8 months pregnant, Belinda was found murdered in her home. Aspects of the scene led police to suspect a staged burglary-gone-wrong and her husband, David, was eventually convicted of the crime. A few years later, however, a local teenager allegedly confessed to the murder, leaving many unsure of just who was responsible. What a Creep: Jeffrey MacDonald Season 12, Episode 6 Family Annihilator & Creep Jeffrey MacDonald was convicted in 1979 of murdering his wife and two daughters on the night of February 17, 1970. At the time he was a doctor for the United States Air Force, his wife was expecting their third child (a son) and he told his wife that he wanted to live in Russia for a few months and work on the US Army boxing team. They had an argument heard by the neighbors and later he called the police saying he and his wife Collette were attacked by a group of hippies. The next ten years was a whirlwind of activity with a cast of characters that are almost too nutty to be the truth and one of the most talked-about true crime stories in US History. It was a wrenching crime followed by an appalling miscarriage of justice, chronicled by none other than the grieving father of the victim. Alicia takes us through the conclusion of the trial of the man who strangled Dominique Dunne to death, presided over by a self-serving judge with a soft spot for the defense team, with a verdict rendered by a jury which was not allowed to hear key evidence as it debated lesser charges than the prosecution wanted. It was unusually cold in New Braunfels, Texas on February 4th, 2011 and the icy roads were brushed lightly with snow. That evening, 18-month-old Joshua JayVaughn Davis Junior went missing from his home. A massive search effort was conducted but the little boy was never found. The New Braunfels Police, having come up with a theory as to what happened to Little Joshua, didn't sway much in their investigative efforts to work other potential leads. Is it possible they missed one that was right in front of them the whole time? What a Creep Season 5, Episode 4 Jerry Lee Lewis Jerry Lee Lewis is considered one of the pioneers of rock n roll. In 1957, he came onto the music scene with his first big hit “Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On”. He was nicknamed “the Killer” and was amazing on the piano. With Elvis Presley heading for a stint in the Army—it was pretty much agreed upon by rock journalists that Jerry Lee Lewis would become the new king of rock. In 1958 he was on his first international tour when it was discovered the 22-year-old Killer was married to his 13-year-old cousin Myra Gale Brown. This would be his third wife and he was not technically divorced from his second wife at the time. This would essentially destroy his career for a while but in the 60s & 70s, he made a big comeback as a country music artist. He was inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame the first year they gave out the awards. In 1989 his life story was told in a very strange movie called Great Balls of Fire starring Dennis Quaid as Lewis. Aged 84 and still kicking—Jerry Lee Lewis is married to his 7th wife. Two of his past wives died under strange circumstances and he has a reputation for being a stubborn, gun-toting, drug-taking nightmare which makes him the perfect for our show. So, let’s get started! When Kathy Page's father erected three signs along Interstate 10 implicating his daughter's husband in her 1991 killing, it was out of frustration resulting both from the Vidor Police's failure to put together a case against their number one suspect and the suspect's blatant falsehoods and odd behavior. Eventually, years after Kathy's murder, her parents took Steve Page to civil court alleging that he was responsible. On their third attempt at holding him accountable the only way they could, a jury found Steve Page to be responsible for the murder, but Vidor Police were never able to get a grand jury to indict him on criminal charges.#JusticeForKathyPage #ThreeBillboards #Vidor #VidorTX #Beaumont #BeaumontTX #Texas #TrueCrime #TexasTrueCrime #Unsolved #ColdCase #UnsolvedMurder #StagedSpecial thanks to our good pal Erica at Southern Fried True Crime for her help with research and information. In the early morning of May 14th, 1991 off the Interstate 10 access road in Vidor, Texas, a newspaper carrier discovered what appeared to be the scene of a tragic accident. When police arrived on the scene, however, everything was not what it looked like upon a first glimpse. It was too clean for an auto accident; something wasn't right...and everything began pointing to the deceased woman's husband, including his own actions and words. Kathy Page's murder, though, remains unsolved to this day.Special thanks to our good pal Erica at Southern Fried True Crime for her help with research and information. Who’s too sexy for this podcast? Not our subjects this week, widely recognized as two of the Sexiest Men Alive, and their equally jaw-dropping ex-wives. First up, Stacie has country superstars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, and seriously, if you don’t Miranda’s back story, buckle up. It’s amazing. Then, Alicia brings us the much bleaker story of the six-year-long marriage of 70s/80s heartthrob Burt Reynolds and his wife Loni Anderson. It was the divorce without end, but also, the story of Loni Anderson surviving and thriving after an abusive relationship. Housekeeping: As of publication, there are still some tickets left for our Atlanta show with Erica Kelley of Southern Fried True Crime on August 25. Visit Venkmans.com to get yours. We can’t wait to see you!
This week, it’s one of the most famous Leos of our time, two-time divorcee, and cultural and musical legend: Madonna. First up, Alicia has the story of her short and turbulent 1980s marriage to fellow Leo and Hollywood bad boy Sean Penn. Then, Stacie has the deets on Madonna’s second marriage, to filmmaker Guy Ritchie, and the custody battle that followed with – but not exactly over – their son, Rocco. Don’t forget your tickets for our August 25 show in Atlanta with Erica Kelley of Southern Fried True Crime, on sale now at venkmans.com.
It’s Alicia’s birthday week, and in her honor, we’re jumping in to the stories of two hilarious redheads. She’s got the surprisingly affectionate divorce of comedienne Lucille Ball and her amazingly capable, eventual ex-husband Desi Arnaz. Then Stacie explains that D-List icon Kathy Griffin is best understood as one of those 1970s Weeble toys: she may wobble sometimes, but there’s nothing that’s going to knock that woman down. Don't forget your tickets to our August 25 Atlanta show with Erica Kelley of Southern Fried True Crime. Check out venkmans.com for all the details!
Today we take a look at some lifestyles of the rich and famous, and their playground, Palm Beach, Florida. Stacie has the incredible story of a 20th century titan, Marjorie Merriweather Post, who was a four-time-divorcee and one-time richest woman in America. Then Alicia brings us the decidedly more laid back lifestyle of Peter Pulitzer and his wife Lilly Pulitzer (nee McKim), who lived an oddball lifestyle among Florida’s orange groves that led Lilly into fashion design. Promo this week: Grab your ticket for our live Atlanta show with Erica Kelley of Southern Fried True Crime on August 25 at Venkman’s!
This week, Alicia calls all the Trashy Divorces shots and brings you the story of the four wives – and three divorces – of 20th century literary giant Ernest Hemingway. Stacie’s here, but she’s playing hurt after dislocating her shoulder – we’ll be back with our usual format next week. Happy episode day, friends! This week, Alicia tells the sordid tale of Mary, Queen of Scots, who sure knew how to pick ’em. Stacie brings you the trashy divorces of Rupert Murdoch, who might have been better at destroying democracies than making love work. Everybody wants to rule the world, and this week, both of our profiles really, really tried. Promo: Tickets for our August 25 LIVE SHOW with Erica Kelley of Southern Fried True Crime at Venkman's in Atlanta are on sale Wednesday, July 10! Can’t wait to see you there!
To celebrate Mother’s Day, we decided to cover the Mother of Trashy Divorces – Elizabeth Taylor! And to cover Elizabeth Taylor, we asked our friend and Elizabeth Taylor superfan Erica Kelley of the Southern Fried True Crime podcast to join us! There is so much tea in this episode, friends. Not just the seven husbands and eight weddings, but all the side stories and rabbit holes that give us all the joy (and all the feels). Elizabeth Taylor was complex: a child star, a hard-drinking beauty, a foul-mouthed sophisticate, a one-take actor, an Oscar winner, a widow, a mother, an activist, and a many-time divorcee. Elizabeth Taylor was singular. Come meet her with us, or get to know her again. Love Erica Kelley? Us too. You can find her and Southern Fried True Crime at Facebook and Twitter. Erica Kelley from Southern Fried True Crime leaps into all things southern with Mary Payne in this episode. Southern Fried True Crime is a podcast that tells stories of the darkest crimes occurring in the small towns of southern states. Mary Payne and Erica agree that crimes that take place in the south are rich, layered, and have a different feel to them than those that take place elsewhere. Erica enhances each crime, and story, simply in the style that she tells them - in a slow and methodical way. The two discuss some of the criticisms, and even threats, Erica has received after certain episodes that have aired. It's St Patrick's day. Worldwide, buildings are being "greened". Shamrock shakes are being consumed. Guinness is being poured, and we're drowning the shamrock. This week we taco 'bout the 4-part docuseries "Lorena" available now on Amazon Prime. In 1993, 24-year-old Lorena Bobbitt was arrested for cutting off the penis of her 26-year-old husband John Wayne Bobbitt. The case and trial would become a media circus. Lorena would claim that John physically and sexually abused her throughout their marriage and she finally snapped after he'd raped her, once again, that night. He would claim that they were splitting up, that Lorena was angry and had mutilated him out of jealousy and revenge. There are many strange circumstances surrounding Suzie Mages' disappearance and murder. From a similar unsolved homicide to a homicide that seemed to use that unsolved case and Suzie's as an attempt to throw off police, Dallas and Denton Police were chasing leads and connections that seemed to be smoke screens. The Mages family, of course, were also continuously following their own leads in hopes to find the person or persons responsible for their beloved Suzie's unjust and untimely demise. This episode follows the investigation as closely as possible, not only looking at the bizarre events surrounding the case but also the few known facts. What makes a murderer? Who would possibly sign up to fight for a different country in a war with no personal significance? Just how immature is your host, anyway? These and more are addressed in a crossover involving three different countries, a 70-year-old murder and a botched (but maybe not so botched) execution in Canada.
